Ninth Inning Win For The Twins...Twins 7 Red Sox 6
    2008-05-10 04:07:00
Jonathon Papelbon is human. Julio Lugo has been commiting far too many errors. Jon Lester is too unpredictable to count on consistantly, if at all. All of the preceding facts combined Friday night for a ninth inning comeback win for the Minnesota Twins. Jonathon Papelbon surrendered two bottom of the ninth inning runs to take the blown save and the loss. Here is part of what he had to say, taken from the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald, with my thanks..."It's frustrating as hell right now, just because the simple fact is I'm throwing good pitches, I'm just not finishing them right now and executing them all the way through the strike zone," Papelbon said. "I'm sitting there in a comfortable position, where I want to be, with one out to get, and I don't finish a split-finger and he bloops it over the third baseman. Simple. The last outing that I had there were three bloop hits and a broken-bat hit,” he said. “You can’t do nothing about that. Tonight I could do something about t...

Its observance was also formally recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution establishing 2008 as the International Year of Languages.International Mother Language Day originated as the international recognition of Language Movement Day, which has been commemorated in Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan) since 1952, when a number of Bangladeshi university students were killed by the then East Pakistan police and army in Dhaka, formerly Dacca.International Mother Language Day is Mother Language Day is proclaimed by UNESCO to save vulnerable languages and cultures, and promote multilingual culture around the world. The Ninth Day of Christmas
    2008-01-02 14:50:00
January 3 ... “On the ninth day of ChristmasMy true love gave to meNine ladies dancing” A ‘Lady’ is an elegant woman - aristocratic really - married to ‘a Lord’, who has no job and wears her pearls to breakfast and has servants so she never needs (or wants) to know what goes on in the kitchen – right? Without the capital ‘L’, a lady is a refined, well mannered female, married to a gentleman, who never discusses money, and is always perfectly groomed – never messy and besmirched with flour and eggs – right? Originally a ‘Lady’ was the ‘loaf-kneader’, meaning in its larger context the one who is responsible for the household, as identified by its most important product - bread. The word comes from the Teutonic word hláf meaning a loaf, combined with the suffix meaning to knead. A ‘Lord’, on the other hand, means the ‘loaf-keeper’, and denotes his responsibility to provide ‘bread’ (in its larger context meaning ‘food’) to those dependent upon him – family, servants, tenants, guests, and the poor. So – the words lady, lord, and loaf all have the same origin, making our choice today quite obvious. ‘On the ninth day of Christmas,My good friend gave to meNine loaves a-rising’ In my browsing to find an interesting recipe for today, I came across some fascinating old bread names, including – wait for it – ‘Bitchiness Bread’! Apparently it is (or was) made with a thin batter (unfermented) made with oats, and cooked into thin soft cakes on a griddle, and is a specialty of Lancashire in the North of England. If anyone can shed any light on the naming of this I would be delighted, as the OED is no help at all. Realistically, most of us today feel that we don’t have the time or expertise to make bread - which is not realistic at all as the total human time involved in making bread is minimal, and bread dough is very forgiving. There are several ‘real’ breads in the recipe archive,...

    The ninth box

Last night I opened the ninth box. Of what you ask? The ninth box of Candy Canes to put on the tree of course. The kids have eaten 8 boxes of them since we put the tree up the day after Thanksgiving. Any guesses on how many we will go through before the tree comes down on Christmas night?...

Ninth Inning Home Runs Assure The Red Sox A Win...And A Clinch For The Playoffs!
    2007-09-23 12:06:00
Boom! BOOM! And just like that, in the ninth inning Saturday night, the Boston Red Sox forged ahead to an 8-6 lead and Jonathon Papelbon started warming up in the bullpen for the bottom of that frame. And 12 pitches later, it was ovah!! SOX WIN, and better yet, they clinched a playoff berth....no ifs, ands or buts. They're in. Of course, winning the AL East would be so nice, but that will have to wait as they try to win all seven of their remaining games. Were it not for the ineptitude of the Toronto Blue Jays, who blew a 2 run lead over the Yankees in the bottom of the ninth, the Sox would be up by 3 1/2 games instead of 2 1/2. But an error by the Jays' second baseman let the tying two runs score, and the pinstripers went on to win the game in 10. Oh well, enough about them.Daisuke Matsuzaka was good until the seventh inning, when he walked Velandia and Iwamura. His night was done, and the score at the time, with 2 on and 2 out, was 5-3 Sox. A quality start, albeit with a ton of pitch...

    Nailbiting Ninth
    2007-07-23 12:27:00
After being up by a score of 8-1, the Boston Red Sox were faced with a none out bases loaded situation in the ninth inning. The score was 8-5 in their favor, and the pitcher was Jonathon Papelbon, who created that awful situation all by himself. This is from the Courant...... "I'm not feeling too good right there," third baseman Mike Lowell said. The view from the mound wasn't much different."I know I've got to throw a strike," Papelbon said. "He's got to swing at it or I've got to paint a pitch."Papelbon came back to strike out Thome and got Paul Konerko to ground into a double play to preserve an 8-5 victory over the White Sox."Peter here. Phew! Manny Delcarmen came in to relieve starter and winner Tim Wakefield, but was ineffective. But the Darkman came to the rescue to eradicate the enemy rally. He (Hideki Okajima) put out the seventh inning fire AND set down the White Sox 1-2-3 in the eighth. Said the White Sox manager about our Okie Doke...."I think he is the key to their ba...

    Sleepwalking...Until The Ninth
    2007-05-14 01:52:00
The Red Sox pulled off a simply miraculous win at Fenway on Mother's Day today, when the Baltimore Orioles bullpen imploded in the ninth after starter Jeremy Guthrie pitched 8 1/3 innings of terrific baseball. The Sox were down 5-0 and seemingly done for the afternoon. Coco Crisp hit a popup on the infield that catcher Ramon Hernandez dropped for an error. Then Baltimore manager Sam Perlozzo inexplicably took out Guthrie, who only threw 85 pitches, for Danys Baez. Guthrie had the Sox' number all day, allowing only 3 hits. He certainly didn't look tired. I thought Perlozzo did the Sox a favor, and they sure paid him back for it.David Ortiz doubled, scoring Crisp, and Wily Mo Pena singled, and then closer Chris Ray came in. He walked J.D. Drew and Kevin Youkilis to force in a run, and Jason Varitek doubled in two to make it 5-4. Eric Hinske was intentionally walked. Alex Cora then hit a grounder to Brian Roberts, who threw home for the force, but the replay looked like Youkilis was sa...
