I have never noticed the flowers up close and I have to admit they are quite pretty. I wouldn’t recommend this tree for the garden or even planting as a shade tree unless it was an urban area. It is one of the most widely planted street trees in the US and that is because it is so tough and has the ability to withstand many of the conditions urban street trees have to endure. It was introduced into the United States around 1760 but didn’t gain popularity until the late 1800’s. There are many (90 or so) cultivars available in all different shapes, sizes and colors. I am a little partial to the red leafed ones like 'Crimson King' and also like the variegated cultivar ‘Drummondi’, both of which have been featured on this blog before. The reasons I don’t recommend this tree is that aren’t too many plants that will grow underneath it, although I found that Yellow Archangel (Lamiastrum | | By: Digital Flower Pictures.com

| | Norway school shut after YouTube massacre threat | | 2008-01-14 22:26:45 | | Police in Norway say they closed a secondary school near Oslo after a video warning of a high school massacre was discovered on the internet.A 15-year-old student at the Kjenn school, whose name has not been disclosed, has admitted posting the video clip on the YouTube video-sharing website."He has not been arrested (and) he is not in police custody. We will speak with him and his father during the day," Loerenskog police chief superintendent Jens Bruun said. The 50-second video, posted on YouTube on Saturday, was removed late on Sunday. With music playing in the background, it showed a picture of the school, superintendent Bruun said.Pictures of six teachers then popped up, as a voice said: "It will happen one day, it will be a bloody machine, one day you will die."Superintendent Bruun would not comment on the boy's explanation, but said police did not believe he was in possession of weapons. The Kjenn school, about 15 kilometres east of Oslo, has about 400 students aged 13 to 17, Superintendent Bruun said.A number of schools in the Nordic countries have been evacuated and closed due to threats since November 7 when 18-year-old Finnish student Pekka-Eric Auvinen killed eight people before turning his gun on himself at the Jokela High School north of Helsinki. Before the massacre, Auvinen posted videos and messages on YouTube indicating what he planned to do.- AFP

It was Norway who dealt them their exit pass by beating the Chinese 1-0. It was Isabell Herlovsen's lone 32nd-minute strike that sealed the win for Norway and the Chinese weren't able to score a single goal in this match. It was the Chinese who had control of most of the match though. They had 11 more shots compared to only 8 by the Norwegians. Player of the match Ane Stangeland Horpestad and the rest of the Norwegian soccer team ensured that China's "12th man" on the field did not play any part of the match. The hometown crows was silenced for the match especially during the possibility of the Chinese going down 2-0. The Chinese saved the goal though. The Norwegians will now face defending champions Germany in a semifinal knock-out match.FIFA Women's World Cup 2008 Olympics Olympics Soccer | | By: Beijing 2008 Olympics Blog

| | NORWAY: Delimitation of gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea | | 2007-07-01 01:41:00 | | Norske Shell, operator of production licence 255, has concluded drilling of appraisal well 6406/9-2 on the 6406/9-1 discovery (”Onyx Sørvest”). The 6406/9-1 discovery was proven in 2005 and is located approx. 40 km north-west of the Draugen field in the Norwegian Sea.The discovery contains gas in Middle to Lower Jurassic rocks. In a press release issued in January 2006, the NPD indicated a range of uncertainty of 10-50 billion Sm3 recoverable gas for the discovery. The objective of appraisal well 6406/9-2 was to delimit the discovery. The well encountered gas/water contacts in Middle to Lower Jurassic rocks, thus confirming the northerly extent of the discovery. The NPD's preliminary assessment is that the size of the discovery is probably in the upper half of the uncertainty range. Matsaki’s company is one of a few with “carbon-capture technology ready”.
