| The Hottest State - A Novel by Ethan Hawke | | 2008-08-27 02:02:47 | | While browsing for books (no particular book actually) in one of our city’s bookstore yesterday, as I always do by the way, I came upon this book with the name of Ethan Hawke clearly written in the center. | | My Own Kind of Freedom (A FREE Firefly Novel) by Steven Brust | | 2008-08-12 12:52:00 | | Firefly was one of the better scifi shows that never made it. The theme was reminiscent of the Confederate soldiers who headed west looking for freedom from the winning Union soldiers after our civil war. The show had great characters, lots of good action and not a lot of cheesy aliens. Apparently Brust was a fan as well and wrote a FREE novel following the Firefly show. His characters ring true to the ones in the show and it is an entertaining story. For you disappointed Firefly fans, here is a chance to catch up with Mal and crew. You can download the story for FREE at Brust’s site listed below. | | Would You Buy this Novel? | | 2008-08-08 10:48:44 | | In case you haven't been able to tell from my last few posts (seriously, what was up with that baby post yesterday?), I've been a little pressed for blogging time lately. My wife's extended family was in town for a reunion, so I've had a lot of important drinking to do. I'm still recovering, so I'm going to give you a rain check on this week's caption contest. While you're here, though, I have a favor to ask of you. I've been trying to figure out lately how many devoted, regular readers this blog actually has, but even with a kickass tool like Google Analytics it's very hard to determine. Adding to the difficulty is that fact that a lot of you read my posts in your email or a feed reader. Don't get me wrong; I'm happy that you read this stuff, however you do it, but it does make it tough to figure out how many of you are actually reading. Why do I care how many regular readers I have? Well, to be perfectly frank, I have two motivations for blogging.* First, it's a way to force mys | | By: Mattress Police - Antisocial Commentary | | |

| Devil Bones: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels) | | 2008-07-26 08:14:47 | | Devil Bones: A Novel (Temperance Brennan Novels)By Kathy Reichs
Following her most successful book to date, Kathy Reichs -- international number one bestselling author, forensic anthropologist, and producer of the Fox television hit Bones -- returns to Charlotte, North Carolina, where Temperance Brennan encounters a deadly mix of voodoo, Santería, and devil worship in her quest to identify two young victims.
In a house under renovation, a plumber uncovers a cellar no one knew about, and makes a rather grisly discovery -- a decapitated chicken, animal bones, and cauldrons containing beads, feathers, and other relics of religious ceremonies. In the center of the shrine, there is the skull of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, on a nearby lakeshore, the headless body of a teenage boy is found by a man walking his dog.
Nothing is clear -- neither when the deaths occurred, nor where. Was the skull brought to the cellar or was the girl murdered there? Why is the boy's body remarkably well prese | | By: Store Books Cheap | | |

| | Daytime dozing- novel stroke and heart attack risk factor | | 2008-03-01 21:57:06 | | Do you have habit of sleeping during the day i.e., daytime dozing? If yes, be careful! One recent research has shown that risk of stroke was two to four-times greater in those with moderate dozing habits. Researchers have zeroed in what they call a "novel risk factor" for stroke, especially among the elderly: dozing during the day. The study was done by the researchers at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.image by markhillaryAccording to the study's lead author Bernadette Boden-Albala, this suggests that daytime dozing" may be an important and noval stroke risk factor". Findings of the study were reported at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2008.Among the study's 2,153 participants, the risk of stroke was seen to be 2.6 times greater for those classified as doing "some dozing" compared to those with "no dozing". | | | | Firefly - Free Fan Fiction Novel | | 2008-02-09 07:01:31 | |
I am a big fan of the sci-fi movie Serenity, which was based on the short-lived Firefly series on Fox network. The movie gave a new meaning to the term ‘ space western’, and I, for one, especially enjoyed the adventures of the various characters that made up the Serenity’s motley crew. Disappointingly, the director of the film has hesitated to make a sequel to the movie, citing various reasons.
Though a sequel to the original movie seems distant at the moment, there is a flourishing base of fans who create their own fan fiction to feed the addiction. As most of it is not very good for average people like us, here is a good quality, free e-book by fantasy and science fiction author, Steven Durst, released under a creative commons licence. You can download it in a pdf and/or doc format.

| | Englewood Author’s Novel Inspired by Colorado Castle Owner | | 2008-01-15 19:45:30 | | A Scottish castle brimming with European antiques is not what you would expect to see in Northern Douglas County. Nor would you expect to run into over 3,000 acres of pristine undeveloped land just east of Castle Pines Village. Even odder, this castle and the land was owned and governed by a Southern belle who raised cattle.Colorado's beauty and sunny days attract all sorts of people with interesting pasts and Tweet Kimble brought her life steeped in European culture to our Rocky Mountain State.Englewood author Corinne Joy Brown was one of the last writers to interview Tweet before she died in 1999. Tweet's character was so strong and so fascinating to Corinne that Tweet served as the inspiration for her historic novel "MacGregor's Lantern." The castle Tweet owned was modeled after Scottish castles. During the research for Corinne's book, Corinne discovered that the Scots dominated in the ranching industry in Colorado and Wyoming. It may have been this influence that encouraged the castle design at Cherokee Ranch.Maggie Dowling is the main character in MacGregor's Lantern. Her determination is reminiscent of the stories people still tell about Tweet Kimble. Maggie moved out West, accepting an engagement proposal from one of her father's clients. She expected adventure, which she certainly encountered but it wasn’t packaged the way she expected. Many women during the late 1800’s also traveled west with their husbands or to meet up with their fiancés and many found the western frontier too difficult to bear so they returned home. Returning home was never an option in Maggie's mind. She committed to the decision and for better or worse, she was going to see that decision through. This story combines independence and determination with usual western flair.I love reading stories about strong, determined women, so I gladly encourage you to MacGregor's Lantern by Corinne Joy Brown. If you live in Colorado or when you plan a visit, make sure you take a tour of Ch | | By: Famiss - Women's Success Literature & History | | |

| | Another Novel Idea For Troop Support: Contact Your Representative | | 2007-11-13 04:21:00 | | Keeping in step with my previous article about supporting our troops, here is yet another idea that people who REALLY support them could consider. Unfortunately, it requires mass amounts of people to do so, but it can be effective when done.As a Marine combat vet myself of Operation Desert Storm/Shield, I was extremely grateful upon returning home to see roads lined with flag waving supporters. It made me, and the rest of my unit, the 7th Marines, happy to see that we weren't going to be subjected to the same disrespect that Vietnam Vets received. But the thing we really appreciated the most, especially those in my unit who were married, and some who even had kids, was that our time overseas in a combat zone was tax exempt. We still had to file taxes for that tax season, but those several months overseas were essentially tax free.Action. Action ALWAYS speaks louder than words. This may be old news to some, but honestly, this is the first time I've seen this one.As I drive about town, I see many a car with one or more flashy variants of the yellow ribbon sticker for 'Supporting our troops' on it and begin to wonder. Do these people really support our troops? Or do they merely give them a passing thought when they see the casualty total on the Communist News Network?Well let's find out. The e-mail Roberta sent me is short and sweet, and VERY to the point:When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please consider including the following:A Recovering American soldierc/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center6900 Georgia Avenue,NWWashington ,D.C. 20307-5001If you approve of the idea, please pass it on to your e-mail list.Like I said, short, sweet and too the point. | | Linebuzz - a novel approach to commenting | | 2007-05-15 22:22:00 | | When I discovered LineBuzz , I was immediately compelled to try it out. I think this novel application, which went into beta yesterday, has the potential to be a real winner within the blogsphere.LineBuzz will let your blog readers add comments inline. How it works.Readers of your blog can highlight any post text and hit on a "Comment Inline" button (which would usually be best placed in a sidebar). This pops up a window where they can add a comment. The comments are then displayed in a box under the "Comment Inline" button. Text that has been selected for commenting is underlined when your page next reloads. Clicking the underlined text text triggers a pop-up showing the the comments made. Apart from the usefulness of having your comments displayed in this way, readers can comment about a particular part of your post.Installation is simple. LineBuzz creates the script for you. All you need to do is type in your blog url and then insert the script where you want the comments to appear | | By: Blogging Sueblimely | | |
