    Lost Odyssey Review
    2008-05-27 05:10:31
Lost Odyssey is the second game from studio “Mistwalker”, with the popular title Blue Dragon being its first. While Blue Dragon was somewhat of a let down here in the states, Lost Odyssey more than made up for any lost integrity for this company.Lost Odyssey’s story is simply astounding to say the least. It has truly been a while since I have played a game with such an interesting story in it. Plus the length of this RPG is really quite long, totaling out just over 40 hours, which in this day and age is kind of unheard of. The story follows the path of Kaim, who is an immortal, which has no recollection of any of his memories from the last thousand years or so. Throughout the game you encounter other immortals that who end up joining your party to fight alongside Kaim. The story has many nice plot...

If week one had to be summarized in one word (and it doesn’t) that word would be “adjustment”. This week revolved around adjusting to all things Nepal: the power cuts, the lack of hot water, the cold weather (we were in Darwin/S’pore for the previous 4 days), the dirt, the customs, the language. It was a pleasantly gentle learning curve, probably due the relative nice-ness of all the people. The hospital started to make more sense and we overdosed on momo (aka. bad dumpings) like crack addicts with enormous lung volumes. We met the inhabitants of Shalom Guesthouse: the always cheerful Daph, the quiet Cat, the Didi – our housekeeper and many more. Of note was Bong, one of Jimbo’s high school friends who studies at the rival university, who independent of us, had also planned his elective not only in the same hospital, but was also staying in the same guesthouse. This is also the week where we decided to book bungee jumping. Only because I’m masochistic. It was going t

Nepal Odyssey: white isn’t my choice
    2008-04-23 05:50:58
We arrived at the airport after a struggle. One interesting billboards we found along the way on the bus-stops along the way were of this Asian girl, just lying there, with a sign "White is my choice". I still have no idea about what the ad was about, but lets say the sign proved quite ironic later.Even James Bond isn't immune from yellow fever. Hmm...what to hold? handle bars or a hot asian woman's hand?Maybe this sexist graph can give us an idea as to why women like guys in general? Gold-diggers!We rush through the airport to the budget terminal as our remaining check-in time can be easily counted in seconds. Jimbo and I were just exhausted from clubbing, and I also had food poisoning. Speed became quite and issue. We (finally) arrived at the counter and managed to check in and sat for the 1st time in a while in the comfort of a non-truly-budget airlines: Silk Air. It’s kinda budget – it’s the low frills (not no frills) S’pore Airlines, but it was good – meals were there e

    The Odyssey begins.
    2008-03-04 19:24:00
Lost Odyssey Uploaded by Abriael As I'm still a bit shaken by the passing of the Dungeon Master, this will be a brief post, and I'm not sure if it'll make much sense.Today I finally managed to find some time to begin playing Lost Odyssey. And goodness, this was a long wait (given that here in Italy we had to wait one month longer than in the US, as usual). Even if i was a bit disappointed by the packaginge (Three CD's squashed in the room for one and a fourth CD slapped in a paper sleeve? Come on Microsoft, you can do MUCH better), I just set the thought aside and happily proceeded to load the game on my faithful first generation 360 pro (no RROD here, thankfully).Goodness, you have no idea about how much I love playing games that include the Japanese language. Playing a JRPG with the original Japanese voice acting (which is several times better than any other in the world) and subtitles is extremely pleasurable, expecially for me that, having worked in the voice acting field f

Odyssey, Pong Creators Discuss the Beginning of Games Above: Al Alcorn (left), creator of Pong, and Ralph Baer, designer of the first home videogame console, Odyssey, share a joke during their Game Developers Conference panel Wednesday afternoon. At bottom right is the Brown Box -- the final prototype of the world's first game console. SAN FRANCISCO -- Game Developers Conference attendees got a rare chance to see two of the men who created the videogame industry appear on-stage together Wednesday. Ralph Baer, who invented the videogame console, and Al Alcorn, the Atari engineer who designed Pong, joined forces to present a panel appropriately titled "How To Create an Industry." Wired.com spoke with both of these industry pioneers after their panel, and we'll have a video of both interviews soon. For now, some notes on the session are below.Baer, 86, began the panel by taking the audience through a history of early 20th-century electronics that he came in contact with

Lost Odyssey: the best game you'll ever read - SendMeRSS
    2008-01-15 17:18:00
Lost Odyssey: the best game you'll ever readFiled under: NewsMultiplayer has an interesting little preview up for Lost Odyssey, the upcoming RPG from Mistwalker starring an immortal man with amnesia. We've reported before that a significant portion of the game is taken up by flashbacks. The twist is that these flashbacks are actually written short stories for the player to read (if desired). While Multiplayer reports that the game is more or less aimed squarely at Final Fantasy fans, the short stories are apparently an entertaining diversion. It's explained that one of the reasons these stories are so entertaining is that they are significantly different from things tried in other, similar Japanese RPGs. It's not uncommon for games to present unlockable content as an incentive for players to keep on playing, but we're pretty sure that short stories are a first. Fret not if reading isn't your thing, as Multiplayer also takes a look at the rest of the game. You can hit the "read" link to check out the whole preview, or you can let us save you some time: if you like Final Fantasy, it sounds like you'll like Lost Odyssey. Just get ready for a lot of loading. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments Link - Comments - Richard Mitchell - Tue, 15 Jan 2008 22:30:00 GMT - Feed (2 subs) lost-odyssey microsoft-game-studios mistwalker Sent using SendMeRss.com. Alberto Manguel: Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey

Melinda Harvey reviews Alberto Manguel's Homer's The Iliad and The Odyssey. New books crowd our view of old ones. But publishers and authors are culling while they clutter. Thousands of original titles are printed each year and a significant number of them tell us precisely which books to read and how many. There have been Melvyn Bragg's 12 Books That Changed The World and Peter Boxall's rather

    Odyssey
    2007-04-09 18:54:00
For one night, college life was all that it was supposed to be. No, not what was promised to me in countless television series, crappy made for TV specials and movies. No, I didn’t get smashed out of my mind. I didn’t do some night putting with the Chancellor’s daughter, pull a prank on the Dean of Admissions, or even wear a toga. There weren’t any drugs, or loud techno music thumping in the background, though there were some rather amusing drunken students stumbling around. But, none of that ever mattered to me. College was never about any of that stuff, not in my mind. What was accomplished that cold Friday night was far more important. In just one voyage up a cold stretch of interstate, I reunited two star-crossed lovers, navigated through the wintry streets to find long lost friends, stared down the site of my greatest defeat and jetted through with two hands clenched upon the wheel, screamed my lungs out under the dark sky, while a river of bright yellow lights c

    2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) - ickleReview (DVD)
    2005-01-09 04:41:00
Stanley Kubrick's masterwork. Simply some of the best cinema ever made. Filmed on 70mm (twice the normal size) the visuals are breathtaking. I still believe these are some of the best special effects I've ever seen - and this was made in 1968! Some viewers won't have the patience for Kubrick's slow developing, subtle plot, long takes and ambiguous symbolism; but I believe Kubrick is a cinematic equivalent of James Joyce: sometimes the best art is that which humbles you and confounds your complete understanding. The film's symphonic movements trace life in time and space from the Dawn of Man to Beyond the Infinite. An obscure, black monolith and the most famous cut in cinema history connect the apeman's discovery of the weapon and future man's high technology. The bone was the first weapon, the first technology, and enabled the apes to stand on two feet, defend territory and kill animals for meat. By the time of the Jupiter Mission, the spaceship's onboard computer, HAL, has be
