| DE Ellis a Forgotten Man Among Off Season Imports | | 2008-07-07 06:00:07 | | Ellis could have impact as rookie role player (Photo Source)
It's always about the "big names" - which, for an organization like the Buffalo Bills, is fine. Big names sell tickets. In this off-season's case, big names very likely will go a long way toward shoring up a shoddy defense. Names like Marcus Stroud, Spencer Johnson, Kawika Mitchell and Leodis McKelvin have Bills fans excited over the potential that this defensive unit has.
Is it possible, however, that one player that's rarely mentioned in the same breath as these "big names" will have as big an impact in 2008?
The Bills are certainly hoping so. Lost amongst the shuffle of the veteran names and the team's top two draft picks (McKelvin and WR James Hardy) is rarely-discussed third round pick DE Chris Ellis. The rookie out of Virginia Tech - who has remained relatively anonymous throughout spring practices - enters his inaugural NFL season very likely to play an important role for this Bills team. | | By: Buffalo Rumblings
| | The Avs' Underwhelming Off-Season So Far | | 2008-07-03 07:54:40 | | I'm not exactly sure what we were expecting from the Avalanche this summer, but it had to be more than this. Though the free agent pool was relatively thin overall, there were still attractive names like Hossa and Rolston and Campbell and Conklin. Even if the Avs were only interested in finding new pests, Jarkko Ruttu was up for grabs. Instead they settled for Darcy Tucker and Andrew Raycroft, two players bought out by the Maple Leafs. Oh, and the Swedish mystery man Per Ledin.
Ho hum.
At least the Avs were able to retain the services of Wojtek Wolski, John-Michael Liles and Adam Foote, and likely Marek Svatos and the two Codys as well. But overall? Kind of dull. They lost Jeff Finger, Kurt Sauer, Jose Theodore and Andrew Brunette. Not exactly the cream of the crop, but three of those guys were valuable depth players and I'm unsure the Avs can sufficiently fill the gaps.

During the 2007 NFL season, when the Buffalo Bills had plenty of trouble scoring through the air, we knew it. We knew it early in the off-season when the Bills released veteran wideout Peerless Price. We even probably knew it before the '07 season started: the Bills really needed an upgrade at wide receiver.
Heading into the free agent signing period, pundits everywhere knew that the Bills could and would be targeting a wide receiver. Instead, the team focused on beefing up its defensive front seven, acquiring three big men - tackles Marcus Stroud and Spencer Johnson, as well as linebacker Kawika Mitchell - in the first two days of free agency. Good, logical strategy - still bad receivers.
By that point in free agency, the wide receiver pool had thinned. Probably the best fit for the team in terms of their size wishes, Ernest Wilford, had already been gobbled up by the talent-starved Dolp | | By: Buffalo Rumblings

Mitchell adds size, versatility to LB corps (Photo Source)
Last season, despite a rash of injuries, rookies at quarterback and running back, and incredibly long odds, the Buffalo Bills were playing for their playoff lives in Week 15. In that game, which took place in Cleveland, the Bills were shut out in a winter storm. That day, the rather large Browns pushed the Bills around the field of play like blocking sleds.
The following week, history repeated itself. After taking a 14-0 lead on the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants, the aptly named champions used their size and toughness to overpower the Bills after heavy rains and wind infiltrated Ralph Wilson Stadium. Take away those 14 points - which were scored before the harsh weather hit Buffalo that day - and in two successive weeks, the tiny Bills had been outscored 46-7 in weather that was supposed to be to their advantage, not their undoing.
Simply put, the Bills weren't big enough. Playin | | By: Buffalo Rumblings

| | Reese discusses off-season decisions | | 2008-02-20 05:41:48 | | Giants' GM Jerry Reese was apparently on Sirius Radio the other night talking about the teams's off-season plans. The following was taken from Ralph Vacchiano's Blue Screen blog. I have simply added some of my own thoughts to each of Reese's responses. Reese on Michael Strahan: "We'd like for him to come back for another season, but it's really going to be a tough decision for him. He's got the ring. He's a first-ballot Hall of Famer. He's got to think, 'Can I really get myself up to do this again?' ... We'd like to know sooner than later so we know what we have to do personnel-wise." My thoughts: I would love to see Strahan come back. He is obviously still a terrific player when he's healthy and committed. Yet, with Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka a Strahan retirement would not be devastating. Reese said moving Mathias Kiwanuka back to DE is a possibility, if Strahan retires. However, it's not a certainty: "We're committed to getting him on the field because we want our b | | By: Big Blue View | | |

| | 2008-2009 Off Season Thoughts | | 2007-12-23 04:37:00 | | Yes, that's right...NEXT year's off season. Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald wrote a thought-provoking piece in today's Boston Herald, having to do with a couple of the "what-ifs" that will be facing the Sox after the 2008 baseball season. Here's a little bit of it, and my comments will follow. The entire article is available when you click on the title, but read this and my comments first, please..."Every offseason presents a whole new set of storylines. | | The Real Off-Season Depresses Me | | 2007-06-18 15:48:40 | | This is what we have to look forward to as far as news articles outside of this site, Bills fans. Below are the two most interesting Bills-related articles I could find this morning, and they both depress me. Over at RealFootball365.com, Anthony Bialy reminds us how long we have to wait for training camp. Uh... thanks, Bialy. Keep twisting that knife, it feels good. Chris Ostrander over at the main site has a nice Father's Day piece on Bobby April and his son. It's a touching story and all, and I like Bobby April a lot, but come on! This is all the Internet has to offer today?! I need real football. I need to see some hitting. I think everyone reading this needs some hitting too. Thankfully, YouTube and Paul Posluszny come to the rescue: More to come later today. More football, that is. | | By: Buffalo Rumblings | | |
| | Off-season Rankings: Part IV | | 2007-06-12 07:02:30 | | It's time for guest writer Travis Wingfield to unveil the teams he feels had the best off-seasons. He also gives us his early Super Bowl picks. So here we go: 8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- The Bucs were already notorious for a stout defense and this off-season they've only become stronger. Kevin Carter is the new defensive end and he is joined by Gaines Adams on the opposite side to make for a strong pass rush. Cato June brings his Super Bowl bling down to Florida to man a linebacker position. Luke Pettigout is new on the line and the quarterback position has been a mess to say the least this off-season. The Bucs picked up Jake Plummer and Jeff Garcia only to see Plummer retire. Bruce Gradkowski and Chris Simms will be given a chance to win the job but it's all but Garcia's at this point. The Bucs failed to find another WR and I'm still not high on their offense. Best add: Gaines Adams DE Worst loss: Jake Plummer QB (I know he was never a Buccaneer, but would've been nice | | By: The Phinsider | | |

| | 2007 Off-Season Rankings: Part II | | 2007-05-29 07:00:57 | | Continuing on with guest writer Travis Wingfield's off-season rankings, here is his second installment. To check out his first installment, click here. Onto Part II: 24. Pittsburgh Steelers- Mike Tomlin is just 34 years old and is entering his first year as a head coach in the NFL. He has quite an act to follow, stepping in after the position was manned for 37 years by just 2 men; Chuck Noll and Bill Cowher. The Steelers also lost both of their top assistant coaches in Russ Grim and Ken Whisenhunt to other jobs. Tomlin's first order of business was cutting their emotional leader, linebacker Joey Porter. I really question that move, as the Steelers only went on to draft a linebacker in the first round. Granted, Lawrence Timmons is a solid player, but Porter was a huge asset to the Steelers. All-pro guard Alan Faneca is on the fence and reportedly wants out. If they lose him, it'd be a huge blow to that offense considering they already lost Jeff Harting to retirement. | | Tragic Off-Season Continues In NFL | | 2007-05-29 01:37:28 | | In what has been an unprecedented off-season for tragedy in the NFL already, news has broken that the body of Patriots DE Marquise Hill has been found in a body of water outside of New Orleans, LA this afternoon. Reports first broke that Hill, a second round draft pick of the Patriots in 2004 and a member of LSU's National Championship team, was involved in a Jet-Ski accident in Lake Pontchartrain Sunday evening. Hill and a female companion were riding the watercraft without life vests when they were thrown into the water. As Broncos fans we have become all too aware of traghedy this off-season and everytime something likes this happens it opens up the wonds just a little bit. Once again we are reminded that football is, in fact, just a game. When tragedy struck the Broncos family not once but twice friends and rivals alike were quick to send kind thoughts and we should do the same at this dark time for the Patriots. | | 2007 Off-Season Rankings: Part I | | 2007-05-22 07:04:07 | | With mini-camps going on around the league, now is as good a time as ever to take a look at how teams fared in the offseason. Doing this will be guest writer Travis Wingfield and will be broken down into 4 seperate installments. First, Travis looks at teams 32-25: The bulk of the off-season is over and it's time to begin grading each team. This is all just chalk talk considering we're only taking into account what happened on paper, but you can evaluate a team based on their roster, and that's exactly what I'm doing. The Dolphins had a see-saw type off-season that I'm not in love with, but I don't hate either. The strong defense is even stronger and the offense is a lot faster. There are some question marks that need to be solved but this team could make some noise. As for the rest of the NFL, each team has been given their own paragraph. Without further ado, here are the 2007 off-season rankings. (Keep in mind it's grading how the teams did in the off-season, not h | | By: The Phinsider | | |
| | Broncos In The Top 5 of Best Off-Season List | | 2007-05-18 15:37:20 | | It is becoming habit that the Broncos rank highly on their off-season activity. The Broncos were among the most aggressive teams during the off-season, and on most accounts the feedback has been positive. The latest such list was released by FOXSports and graded the Broncos #4 in the list of teams having the best off-season Below is their take on the Broncos off-season moves -- 4. Denver Broncos In no way could the 2007 off-season be seen as a positive one for Denver. Two tragic events struck the Broncos family in the off-season. The deaths of Darrent Williams and Damien Nash shook the team, the city of Denver, and the NFL as a whole. Roster-wise, Denver did improve in the off-season. A 1,500-yard running back in Travis Henry comes to Mile High, serving as the first big-name back to grace Denver 's backfield since the Clinton Portis trade. Veterans Dre' Bly, Daniel Graham, and Patrick Ramsey join the squad as well. On draft weekend, the Broncos addressed their def | | By: Mile High Report | | |
| | Giants' off-season one of the worst? | | 2007-05-17 23:44:04 | | Out of 32 NFL teams, Peter Schrager of Fox Sports has decided that the Giants have had the 30th-worst offseason in the league. Here's his logic. Giants GM Jerry Reese started off his career as GM with a bang -- releasing starters LaVar Arrington, Carlos Emmons, Chad Morton, and Luke Petitgout within the first month of being hired. He just never followed up on replacing those players. On top of the questionable extensions for Tom Coughlin and Eli Manning, the Giants failed to address glaring needs on the offensive line over the course of the past three months. Starting center Shaun O'Hara was re-signed, but Big Blue waited until the second day of the draft to pick up some insurance for one of the league's most heavily penalized and porous units in '06. Tiki Barber's retirement obviously hurts the already sputtering offense as well. Are Reuben Droughns and rookie wideout Steve Smith enough to lift the unit to the next level? Is that patchwork linebacker corps good enough for t | | By: Big Blue View | | |
