| 2008 Denver Broncos - Breaking Down The Roster #3 - Offensive Line | | 2008-07-14 19:12:42 | | Nalen's health will be a huge question in '08
Under Mike Shanahan, the Denver Broncos have been known for a couple things. A strong running game and a solid, if a bit too quiet, offensive line. A group that has been synonymous with imposing their will, despite their lack of pure beef up front, the Broncos' O-Line was an area of the football team that fans could hang their hat on. Over the past several years, however, injuries and age have started to take their toll. Let's look at two different areas that are an indication of O-Line performance. Are these hardened rules when it comes to evaluating an O-Line? Of course not, but I like to keep it simple and let you guys and gals decide.
First, we'll look at sacks allowed, and where the team ranked from 2003 through 2007 --
Sacks Allowed --
2003 -- 25 Sacks -- #62004 -- 15 Sacks -- #32005 -- 23 Sacks -- #3
2006 -- 31 Sacks -- #132007 -- 32 Sacks -- #16

| | Football Outsiders gives Giants offensive line a little love | | 2008-05-19 06:00:01 | |
Football Outsiders recently reviewed the drafts and remaining needs of each team in the NFC East in a regular segment it calls 'Four Downs.'
Within FO's recap is some interesting statistical data about the Giants offensive line, an underappreciated unit that was one of the best in the league in 2007.
FO summarized the situation with the Giants offensive line this way:
Back in the fall of 2007, it seemed very likely that the New York Giants would need to draft an offensive lineman in the 2008 draft, perhaps even in the first round. Former starting left tackle Luke Petitgout had just left for Tampa Bay, and his backup, Bob Whitfield, had retired. These departures gave David Diehl, formerly a guard, and Rich Seubert, formerly a backup, the chance to start at left tackle and left guard, respectively. Fans hoped for the best, but it wouldn’t have been too surprising to see Diehl move back to guard by now, forcing the Giants to draft a lineman high or dip into the free agency pool. | | By: Big Blue View
| | Better Know a Jaguars Coach pt. 2: Offensive Line Coach Andy Heck | | 2008-05-13 14:45:00 | |
Offensive Line Coach: Andy Heck
Offensive Line; born January 1, 1967, Fargo, N.D. Tackle Notre Dame 1985-88. Pro tackle Seattle 1989-1993, Chicago 1994-98, Washington 1999-2000. College coach: Virginia 2001-03. Pro coach: Joined Jaguars in 2003
Andy spent his college career at Notre Dame playing tackle under head coach Lou Houltz. Known as a physical and tenacious blocker, he helped anchor an OL that led the Fighting Irish with blocking which allowed for their dominating ground performances.
Notre Dame followed Coach Lou Holtz’s slow but effective formula for winning perfectly: grind it out (250 rushing yards per game) and play great defense (allowed only 12.3 points per game). Tony Rice led Notre Dame in both rushing (700 yards) and passing (1,176 yards) as the Fighting Irish played ball control en route to 32.6 points per game

| | Callahan Interviewed For Offensive Line Coach | | 2008-01-09 18:20:25 | | Adam Schefter of the NFL Network is reporting that the New York Jets interview former Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan to fill their vacancy as the offensive line coach.
Callahan coached the Oakland Raiders to a Super Bowl in 2002, but ended up on the losing end to Jon Gruden’s Buccaneers. He was the team’s [...] | | By: JetsCentral.com
| | Giants add depth to offensive line | | 2007-06-07 23:36:02 | | I think you can pretty much pencil in David Diehl as the Giants starting offensive left tackle this season. No announcement about that has been made, and I seriously doubt anything official will be said until training camp next month. The Giants, however, announced today that they have signed free agent guard Zach Piller. The 31-year-old Piller is a 6-foot-5, 315-pound guard who spent the first 8 years of his career with Tennessee. My guess is Piller, who I know nothing about, will compete for a slot as a backup with the Giants, and his signing indicates to me that the Giants expect Diehl to be playing outside this season. Diehl at left tackle is hardly a surprise. Most people seem to feel he is a better guard, and I agree. I think, though, that he will do OK at tackle. He won't be Jonathan Ogden, but he doesn't have to be to adequately replace Luke Petitgout.

| Friedman adds to Offensive Line Depth | | 2007-03-21 03:19:00 | | The Browns announced that they resigned C/G Lennie Friedman to a one year contract. Friedman was a free agent who received little interest from other teams.Resigning Friedman is a smart move. He will help provide depth, versatility, and experience to a line that seems to be ravaged by injuries every year. | | By: Dawg Pound South | | |
