| Jacksonville Jaguars Offseason Questions: Pass Rush Improved? | | 2008-07-17 00:14:15 | |
With training camp just around the corner (July 26th), Big Cat Country is taking a look at the progress made by the Jaguars to address their biggest offseason questions. Today's episode revolves around the addressing the pass rush.
Where to Begin: (not) Under Pressure
When the Jacksonville Jaguars left the playoffs after a painfully disappointing and embittering loss to New England, the offseason needs wrote themselves. The Jaguars had just participated in the Tom Brady passing school, where an ineffective pass rush had allowed Brady to complete 26 of 28 passes, a number that would haunt the Jaguars defense.
The front four of the Jaguars struggled during the 2007 season to bring effective and consistant pressure against opposing quarterbacks. For the Jaguars, this led to a multitude of problems, from allowing opponents to come back into games to forcing the secondary to cover receivers for so long that finding the open man was only a matter of time.&nb | | By: Big Cat Country - An Unoffical Jacksonville Jaguar | | |

The Bills made a big splash with the offseason acquisition of DT Marcus Stroud, whose physical presence will improve a run defense that ranked 25th in the league in allowing 124.6 ypg) last season. Stroud not only can defeat the double-team, he also should provide an upfield push that should throw off the timing of the ground game. He will take a lot of pressure off DT Kyle Williams, who is a short, powerful player who shows intensity and solid technique.

| Offseason Diagnosis: 2008 Predictions | | 2008-06-12 10:15:45 | |
[promoted to the front page - Joe]
Well, we're about a week away from the "actual" start of the offseason move period, the draft, and I'm bored. Because I'm bored in the absence of hockey, and as I anticipate we'll start hearing about UFA re-signings and retirement decisions before then, this seems like a good time to start this discussion / game. On each of the below decisions, what do you think will happen?
Go ahead and put your predictions on these issues in the comments, and I'll put my predictions in this post. Just to add a little spice to this competition, if you beat me, there will be a prize (yes, a real one TBD by your distance to CO) for the person with the most points. If I win, Joe has to fly out to an Avs game in CO and buy me a beer*.
Assuming people actually respond to this, I'll keep all the standings in the comments after decisions come down the pike. The more trash talk and/or discussion of each other's choices, the better.

| Jason Taylor Boycotting Offseason: Prepare for Trade Rumors | | 2008-05-21 15:05:23 | |
In a move that will surely set radio shows and message boards afire, Miami Defensive End Jason Taylor is not attending any offseason activities with the Dolphins, including Training Camp. Head Coach Tony Sparano announced Taylor's intention to boycott in his OTA press conference today:
"This is my reaction with the Jason Taylor situation and I'm going to answer this question one time," Sparano said. "I'm not going to answer another question about the Jason Taylor situation after I answer this. Here's what I know. What I know is that Jason Taylor – and I'm glad we know this, we've gotten the information and that's important – but I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTAs, I know that Jason is not going to be in any mini-camps and I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp.

| Heat's Offseason Options | | 2008-02-28 15:43:00 | | Per request, I'll try to outline what the Heat should be looking at this coming offseason.First off, if Shawn Marion doesn't opt out, then forget about being big time spenders. We won't have enough money to offer anyone a large contract, so we'd have to wait until 2009 for cap space. If he does opt out, then either we can re-sign him to a cheaper deal, or let him walk and go after a guy like Elton Brand or Baron Davis. It's imperative the Heat get rid of Haslem and/or Blount's contracts for someone who can contribute, which is unlikely. If the Heat do draft Michael Beasley, then either of those two players become expendable. The problem is that the trade deadline has passed, so trading for expiring contracts no longer becomes a good idea. We would still have to wait till the 2009 offseason to spend that cash. What I've suggested is packing Haslem and someone else to the Clippers for Maggette and Brand. Maybe letting them have Shawn Marion. Both Brand and Maggette look to leave the Clippe | | By: State of Miami | | |

| Dolphins Begin Offseason Cuts | | 2008-02-11 22:11:00 | | The Dolphins made some news today by cutting 9 players off their 2008 roster.Notable cuts were QB Trent Green, OT L.J. Shelton, WR Marty Booker, and DT Keith Traylor. Additionally, the Dolphins cut ties with linemen Anthony Alabi, Joe Toledo, and Marion Dukes. Also cut were DTs Marquay Love and Anthony Bryant.Armando Salguero reports that the cap casualties resulted in about 8 million dollars worth of freed up cap space. The problem is that this doesn't factor in the opportunity cost of having to replace 4 starters, 2 backups, and 3 practice squad players. It wouldn't surprise me if the Dolphins ended up spending more money to replace who they cut than what they initially saved by cutting the players. That's not to say these guys shouldn't have been released. Trent Green really should consider hanging them up. Besides his health issues, the worst thing this team can have happen is for Beck to start 5 games next year, lose 4 of the 5 and have the coaching staff panic and send in Trent Gr | | By: State of Miami | | |

| Dolphin Nuggets: QB Talk; Offseason Look | | 2007-12-12 23:01:07 | | More QB Talk So now we now that it will be Cleo Lemon starting on Sunday. But that's not very surprising to me. In fact, I've been hearing from various sources that Cam Cameron wanted to keep John Beck on the bench all year and let him learn. However, that changed when some of the veteran defensive players starting calling for Beck to play due to how well John was performing on the scout team. Then when he got the chance to split reps with Cleo, John was outperforming Cleo, making the calls for Beck even more distinct. I'm also hearing from sources that there may have very well been pressure put on Cam by upper management to start Beck rather than sit him down the entire season. And if that is the case, then it's very understandable as to why Cam has decided to go with Cleo. I may not personally agree with it, but I can now understand it better. And very quickly, I just wanted to do a simple comparison of these 2 QBs and how efficien | | By: The Phinsider | | |
