First two Dodge Challenger SEs delivered to Ohio this week
    2008-08-14 08:56:00
If you want to sport a Dodge Challenger without the fire-breathing V8 or the hefty price tag, the time to act is now. The first two Dodge Challenger SE models have arrived in Ohio this week, and 500 models are en-route to dealerships in the U.S. and Canada as you read this. The SE Challenger packs Chrysler's ho-hum 3.5L V6 with 250 horsepower and a truly retro four speed automatic, but the news is far from all bad. You still get the Challenger's muscular looks, power flowing through the rear wheels, and a hard to beat entry price of only $21,995. You probably won't win many races, but at least you won't be driving an Avenger. Seriously, though, the Challenger SE charmed us at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show where it debuted with a simple proposition: cheap, rear-wheel-drive fun on four wheels. Workers at GM factory in Ohio prepare to strike
    2008-05-14 08:33:29
DETROIT -- Workers at a General Motors Corp. metal stamping plant in Ohio have threatened to go on strike Thursday in a dispute over local contract issues, a GM spokesman said today. UAW Local 549 in Ontario, Ohio, near Mansfield has given the company notice that it will strike at 10 a.m., spokesman Dan Flores said. The company and local have been negotiating for months over local contract issues, which govern such items as overtime, work rules and job duties. A message was left for local President Pam Drake. Local plants negotiate their own operating agreements separate from the national contract, which was settled last year. The Ontario plant employs about 1,650 hourly workers, according to GM's Web site. If it occurs, the Ontario strike would be the third against GM over local contract issues. Workers at a factory in Delta Township near Lansing that makes GM's strong-selling crossovers have been on strike since April 17. A UAW local at another plant in Kansas City, Kan., that

Clinton and Obama Miss Big Opportunities in Texas and Ohio
    2008-03-05 23:07:57
On March 4, 2008, Clinton and Obama both missed major opportunities for their campaigns. Clinton needed large margins in Texas and Ohio to close the gap in the delegate lead that Obama has over her. Obama needed to continue his wins to all but assure himself the nomination and bring Senator Clinton one step closer to leaving the race. Tuesday did not accomplish either of these goals for Clinton or Obama. The Obama campaign put Clinton’s net delegate gain from Tuesday at 4. Others say it could only be as large as 12. Tuesday gave Clinton momentum and wins that she desperately needed but was not the net gain she needed in delegates. Clinton won Rhode Island, Texas, and Ohio on Tuesday giving her momentum going into Pennsylvania in April. Obama continues to hold on to a 140 pledged delegate lead over Senator Clinton. The Obama campaign figures that even after Pennsylvania, a state that is more favorable to Clinton, Obama will maintain a 100 delegate lead ov

Bold Prediction: Ohio State will beat LSU
    2008-01-06 22:28:00
Everybody outside of Columbus, Ohio, believes that the 2008 National Championship will be just like the 2007 version when Ohio State was blown out by another SEC team in Florida. However, much like this entire college football season, the final game will also be a major upset. Yes, I said it, the Ohio State Buckeyes will defeat the LSU Tigers and here are three reasons why.3. LSU isn't on fireEverybody talks about LSU as if they're the fastest, most dominant team to ever step foot on a football field. However, this could not be any further from the truth as the Tigers struggled throughout the season. Outside of the first two games against Mississippi State and Virginia Tech, the Tigers did not soundly defeat one BCS conference team with four wins coming by a touchdown or less. In games against 7-6 Alabama and three win Ole Miss, it nearly lost. It took a miraculous fourth down play to beat Auburn, a trick play to get past 6-6 South Carolina, and four fourth down conversions to escape four loss Florida. The Buckeyes will be in for some trouble if the September LSU shows up at the Superdome tomorrow night. However, the Tigers were an average team for the final two and half months of the season, so why should anybody expect anything different.2. Last Year's Title GameIs there any bigger motivation factor for the Buckeyes than last season's 41-14 loss to Florida. It's been a year since the title game debacle and the players have become so sick of hearing how slow they are. Even head coach Jim Tressell sent out DVDs to motivate his players. Last season's loss has been a little overhyped, especially since Florida came into the the national championship with a great game-plan and a mega-chip on its shoulder; while thee Buckeyes were returning from the banquet circuit. The Buckeyes came in a little too confident, didn't make any adjusts due to their number one ranking, and therefore, were dominated. Now, the Buckeyes have a chip on their shoulder just like Florida d

    I Hate Ohio
    2007-10-22 16:37:55
Look, I make it no secret how much I hate Ohio and everything related to even distantly to the state. I'm not sorry if this offends anyone, but they're obviously some sort of Ohioan or Ohio sympathizer and don't care what they think. I understand that this excludes about 11 million people from liking the blog, but I don't care about that either. Besides, I still have Paul in Cincinnati reading. So without further ado... Schadenfreude...The Cleveland Indians lost to the Red Sox in game seven of the ALCS last night 11-2 after getting blown out the game before 12-2. I'm not sure how that even happens, but I can't help be feel wonderful about it.Sure, I'm bitter because the Tigers didn't make the playoffs, but fuck it all. The Indians lost!Look how depressed they look, isn't it wonderful?Disclaimer: Image taken from The Boston Globe.

The Oh in Ohio. Billy Kent.
    2007-10-15 06:27:43
Short movies--under ninety minutes--are having a creative resurgence of late. I’m thinking primarily of Ed Burns’s Looking for Kitty as the model (and it was well under ninety), but The Oh in Ohio is another fine example. The way the filmmakers keep Ohio short is very interesting. They end the movie during the last five or six minutes of the second act. There is no third act. There’s a lot of suggestion to what might be coming in the third act, even foreshadowing to a pleasantly surprising, comedic ending, but it isn’t in the film. There are a handful of fade-to-black scene transitions and when the last one came, I was not expecting the film to end. It was a deft--a term I’ve only used one other time here on The Stop Button--unexpected narrative move and nothing in The Oh in Ohio prepared me for it. There’s very little in the way narrative drive--there’s an abject lack of conflict after the first act--and I kept waiting for a crisis needing resolution and one never arrived. In some ways, the film summarizes instead of plays out in scene, but has enough solid scenes going to give the illusion they’re where the most important events are playing out. Or it might not be deft and the screenwriters just got lucky. Either way, it’s interesting because for a narrative to play out in the traditional structure only to stop, canceling its traditional trajectory, raises a lot of questions about where a story should in terms of creating the fullest experience. The Oh in Ohio could have tacked on another fifteen to twenty-five minutes and it would never have ended quite as well. Because romantic comedies--and The Oh in Ohio is a romantic comedy--tend to have their own pattern and they don’t do it for narrative quality but because romantic comedies really only have seventy or eighty minutes worth of story and they need push it so people won’t dismiss them for running under ninety (or ninety-five, ninety-five sounds more respectable still). So The Oh in Ohio shows cutting and closing sooner, on a high point, might be the way to go. I can think of one or two romantic comedies right now with too long endings, where cutting earlier would have worked better. Other than its narrative innovation (or possible innovation, I’ll check with the patent office), The Oh in Ohio’s got Parker Posey and she’s excellent, but it’s also got a great Paul Rudd performance. Rudd frequently disappoints, but not in this film. Danny DeVito’s good, so is Keith David. Liza Minnelli has a fantastic cameo. The laugh-out-loud comedy scenes mix well with the not-laugh-out-loud ones and there’s still the traditional narrative going on to hold things together. I also use the word “quirky” sparingly (though, apparently, three times to date), but The Oh in Ohio is a quirky film and I feel like I shouldn’t have had to remember on my own. Someone else should have been talking about it.* ★★★ * I have a feeling they were not, because when I went to go to look for DVD reviews, I found four. Apparently, the superstars at HBO Home Video decided to pan and scan the Panavision frame to an HD-friendly 1.85:1, which really bothered me during the scenes when the framing was so obviously off--like when a car drove off frame but was still audible and the scene didn’t cut until it had time to traverse (out of frame, obviously) the rest of the shot.

Teen Goes on Shooting Spree in Cleveland Ohio School
    2007-10-11 15:11:28
Lesson from me to any United States lawmakers who may be reading these words upon this little blog of mine: Recognize the photo that you see here above? it's called a metal detector. That's spelled m-e-t-a-l d-e-t-e-c-t-o-r. That's right. This is just like the one that had been already installed in Success Tech Academy that wasn't being used there too often. Not only should you be passing a law that makes it mandatory for every single school to install these detectors at every entrance/exit, but once they ARE installed there, they should be utilized daily. What are you waiting for? Yet another school shooting? Or are the funds for these detectors already being used for the war in Iraq? READ ABOUT THIS HERE Practice non-violence in your lives. You will be leaving your children a beautiful legacy.

Doctors in Ohio Call for Nanny Taxes in the Name of Good Health
    2007-09-21 07:00:00
It appears that in Ohio, doctors are taking the "doctor knows best" approach to a whole new level, suggesting "a broad tax on lifestyle choices that are detrimental to good health" should their proposal to mandate insurance coverage in the state ever be short on revenue.  From the Dayton Business Journal:The trade group for the state's doctors say giving more control and responsibility to patients are key to health-care reform. The Ohio State Medical Association on Thursday called for mandated health coverage that would require every Ohioan to buy private or state-subsidized insurance. "We want everybody covered," said association President Dr. Craig Anderson, a Columbus neonatal specialist. ..."We want to get the patient back in control," Anderson said. If additional revenue is needed to support the system, a brochure on the plan says lawmakers should consider "a broad tax on lifestyle choices that are detrimental to good health."

The Taliban is Alive and Well in Ohio
    2007-08-02 22:17:00
From Common DreamsWell, this is really weird. I, for one, believe that fathers should have some sort of say in whether a woman gets an abortion or not, even if it has no power beyond an idea logged in some karmic court. I mean, ideally everyone could just talk about the matter and sort things out... but we all know how well that works.Giving the father sole veto power seems just a touch patriarchal and as one-sided as allowing solely the mother to make the decision. But it is her body after all. And personally I'm tired of The Father being the head of household and supreme familial dictator (rarely benevolent). Maybe some form of arbitration (Anyone want that job?)? If a father wants to accept sole responsibility for the child's well-being and agrees to support the pregnant mother at least until birth if not until the child is finished nursing then why should the mother be allowed to make the decision by herself? Indeed, it is her body and don't get me wrong, I am 100% pro-choice, having experienced abortion from the male end of the proverbial stick no less than three times myself and grateful for it every time. But we talked about it, twice before, once after (that one felt a bit different)... it's just such a murky subject... Let whichever being you call God be the judge, I suppose.Who am I to tell any woman what to do with her body? But, then again, who are they to abort a life that doesn't just belong to them without first checking with the father of the unborn child? I'm fine with consensual abortions and abortions where the father is not present and thusly not asked. But when the father is present and wants the child and the women denies him that by aborting the child? Not so down... Thanks to Fern for pointing this one out. Damn. Makes me queasy too. I definitely don't think there should be legal repercussions involved. This stinks of a right-wing plot if you ask me. No one else can come up with such gaping plot holes.Wow. I just changed my own mind ni

The Rush to Implement Ohio’s Largest Financial Transaction Ever
    2007-07-26 07:00:00
One of the problems that plague democracies is the divide between society's interest over the long run and what is good for politicians in the short run.  The latest example of this may be on display in Ohio where the state is considering exchanging the remaining funds it is due under the 1998 tobacco settlement for a lump-sum payment.  If implemented, it would be the largest financial transaction in the state's history. The three-member Buckeye Tobacco Settlement Financing Authority is spearheading the securitization effort, arguing that if it doesn't close the deal soon, the state is likely to get less money over the long run due, in part, to anti-smoking activities carried out by Ohio and other states.  "You have smoking bans going on around the country and many things that affect tobacco in the future," authority member and state treasurer Richard Cordray told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "For us to shed the risk and get a good price while the ma

    Florida and Ohio State Domination
    2007-04-01 16:18:00
Could Florida really beat Ohio State for the football and basketball championships in the same year? They are the favorites on Monday Night to be the first basketball team to win back to back national titles since Duke in 1991-92 and be the first school to win the football and basketball championships within the same calendar year.Lets give props where props are due. Both Florida and Ohio State have dominant athletic programs - they are the elite college athletics right now. Texas is up there, USC is heading there but Florida and Ohio State are in another class. Whatever the outcome, both of these schools fans, alumni, players, and coaches have a lot to be proud of.Now onto the game. It seems the hype around this game is not that big. How often do you get a rematch of the football national championship in the basketball championship? Well, the hype is not up there because both of these basketball teams play second fiddle to football on their campuses. Neither school will be distraught
