    Olympus OM-1 Camera Papercraft
    2008-07-11 10:11:48
Introduced in 1972 at the Photokina of Kohn (most important trade fair for the photographic and imaging industries held in Deutschland every two years), the Olympus OM-1 was the first product in Olympus' OM series. At that time, it was considered to be the world's smallest and lightest 35 mm single-lens reflex camera....

The Underwater/Digital Camera Olympus Stylus 1030 SW 10.1-Megapixel - Black
    2008-07-11 00:44:00
I was looking an underwater/digital camera in the cruise ship since what I have is not waterproof one. Before my husband and I went to snorkel in Cayman Island, I tried to find and wanted to buy one in the cruise ship but they were out of waterproof camera and makes me really annoyed as I was excited to take a picture of beautiful colorful fish but it is not yet the end of the world:). One day my husband and I will do snorkel somewhere perhaps in Key West or in Bahamas and I make sure I will have a waterproof camera. I browsed online this morning a digital underwater camera and I found one, which I wanted to buy. I am thinking it would be a good one since it has a good review but the price still high and perhaps when I am ready to buy one, the price will be less than the price that they have right now and it would be nice. You can see the picture of the camera, price and the basic features that I found in circuit city site.Olympus Stylus 1030 SW 10.1-Megapixel Digital Camera - BlackOLM

Olympus Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/4 AF: Lens Test
    2008-07-09 21:01:00
Olympus continues to push digital's optical envelope with the industry's widest non-fisheye lens for sub-full-frame DSLRs. A 14-28mm equivalent ($1,595, street), even by 35mm standards, this lens is extremely wide. Its unusually large and double-sided aspheric elements, plus multiple elements of extra-low- and super-extra-low-dispersion glass (a total of three) help deliver performance unequalled in the ultrawide digital-only zoom category.HANDS ON:At 1 pound, 12 ounces, the lens is quite hefty by digital ultrawide and fixed-aperture standards. In comparison, fixed f/4 models from Nikon, Pentax, and Tokina, all 12-24mm, weigh only a pound (roughly). The Olympus is also more than an inch longer than these other lenses. However, it is internal-zooming -- the length doesn't grow as you zoom it out. Other physical distinctions: a fixed lenshood, extremely smooth manual focusing, fast but slightly noisy AF, and protective gaskets and O-rings to repel dust and moisture. It does not accept thr

    Olympus E520 Review
    2008-07-08 12:19:00
Olympus E-520 digitalSLR cameraThe Olympus E-520 seems a logical continuation of the E-510. The year is over, so a new type number will attract the attention to the brand again. However, saying just that would not do the Olympus E-520 justice. This DSLR camera closes the front that Olympus started when the Olympus E-3 was introduced. The fact that the Olympus E-520 is quite similar to the E-3 was revealed mainly through technical tests. Naturally, the E-3 aims at a different target group and its application possibilities are multiple; as far as the technical aspects the Olympus E-520, and that of its smaller brother the E-420, are concerned, they prove well-matched to the techniques of the top model of the Olympus stable. And that is a huge compliment for the E-520.Image quality of the Olympus E-520 has been improvedIf you look solely at the camera's specifications, you might want to classify the E-520 as a minor update of the E-510. However, in addition to the number of features that

    Olympus E-3 Digital Camera Review
    2008-07-02 09:02:00
There’s no point denying the stronghold that Nikon and Canon currently have over the high-end enthusiast and professional digital SLR market, but that’s not to say it will stay that way forever - especially when Olympus can produce a competitive unit with all the appropriate stylings and functions expected of a semi/professional DSLR: introducing the Olympus E-3.Upon initial handling it is obvious that the E-3 is ready to play it with the big boys: its rugged metal alloy body weighs 810g (without lens), is as solid as a rock and equally durable, and has weatherproof sealing that means dust and splashes needn’t be a concern. There are upwards of 30 buttons, dials and input/outputs on the body alone, not to mention a 270-degree 2.5” swivel HyperCrystal LCD screen. So, if you haven’t had DSLR experience before, take a deep breath and get ready for a whole new shooting experience!Be warned though, you will need to read the comprehensive 156-page instruction manual cover-to-cover

Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm 1:2.8 Pancake Review
    2008-06-24 08:12:00
The Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm F2.8 Pancake lens was announced in March 2008 to coincide with the E-420 ultra-compact DSLR, and occupies a unique position in the current market as the only fixed focal length ('prime') lens which is bundled as a kit with a camera body. In this it harks back to the 1980s heyday of the classic manual focus 35mm SLR, when cameras were supplied with 50mm F1.8 (or similar) lenses as standard, with which budding photographers learned their art. That 25mm focal length also corresponds directly to 50mm on the 35mm full-frame format, offering the same diagonal angle of view; this is therefore of the 'standard' class of lenses, offering none of the perspective distortion which is characteristic of wideangle or telephoto lenses. The word 'Pancake' in the lens's title offers a clue to its most striking physical characteristic; it is extremely thin (just 24mm, or less than 1") and extremely light, making it the perfect complement to Olympus's E-4x0 class bodies as an

Review : Olympus EVOLT E-420 Digital SLR
    2008-06-16 10:08:00
Image Quality: Image quality is very good to excellent: auto white balance and exposure is very good and the images have excellent colour, with good saturation, contrast and detail, with low noise except for high ISO images. Dynamic range seemed to be good - and can be improved using the Shadow Adjustment Technology. Images were slightly soft straight from the camera on default settings but can be improved by setting the Noise Filter to Low. For maximum detail and colour control RAW images should be taken, although JPEG images straight from the camera were still very impressive. Purple fringing was very low, as was red-eye. The camera did a good job focusing even in low light thanks to the flash assist. I did not notice vignetting in photos, nor did I notice barrel or pincushion distortion. There is a very good range of image sizes, and a good choice of compression options (including RAW). The camera gives very good control over image quality - selecting different picture modes allows

    Olympus E-420 Digital SLR Review
    2008-06-10 08:22:00
Olympus E-420: Build and handlingLightweight but sturdy, the Olympus E-420 differs from its bigger brother by the distinct lack of a hand-grip but it's a feature that's been retained from the E-410. The screen is bright and works well in sunlight, though not perfectly. When the camera is in Live-View the mirror doesn't flop back down to focus which is a great improvement on other models with this feature. The Zuiko lenses are well known by now but if you're unfamiliar with them then you'll be happy to know that they were designed from the ground up to work especially with the four thirds system. The four thirds name comes from the size of the sensor. It's distinctly smaller than other sensors found in cameras by other manufacturers. This was originally thought to cause a potential problem with noise which is what a smaller sensor usually spells. However, this has never been a problem as the Olympus DSLRs have the Trupic Turbo dedicated processors fitted to reduce noise and process image

Review : Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm pancake lens
    2008-06-08 23:54:00
The Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm ‘pancake’ lens is an ideal general-purpose lens for any Four Thirds owners who value portability. It is first and foremost really very small, measuring 64mm in diameter and just 23.5mm thick. This makes it considerably slimmer than any other Olympus lens, and is almost one third the length of the already compact 14-42mm kit lens. It’s also very light at 95g, or half the weight of the 14-42mm.Fit the 25mm pancake onto one of the Olympus E-4xx series bodies and you’ll have yourself a seriously small DSLR kit that won’t place a burden on any bag, and that will actually squeeze into larger coat pockets. Indeed while the combination remains bigger than enthusiast compacts like the Canon PowerShot G9 or Sigma DP1, it’s sufficiently manageable for many to consider it as their ‘pocketable’ go-anywhere camera. The E-5xx series are obviously bigger, but they’ll also benefit from the 25mm pancake’s compact dimensions, transforming them into small

    Olympus E-520 Review
    2008-05-29 09:47:00
The tenth camera in Olympus' Four Thirds system and the third in the 500 series, is the new E-520, a 10.0-megapixel model and an update to last year's E-510. Featuring the same sensor resolution as the earlier model, the new camera sees a few tweaks to improve the performance and handling.Like the other current models in the range, the new camera offers Live View, allowing you to preview and compose images on the LCD, which is itself enlarged to 2.7". The autofocus has been improved to include both contrast detection AF as well as the phase difference detection system normally used in DSLRs, making focusing with Live View much quicker. A nice touch in the Image AF mode, is the way the mirror doesn't move to the down position during shooting, so you maintain a clear view of the scene at all times, though the image dims slightly during exposure. In this mode the AF system uses the imaging sensor. There are two further AF mode options in the menu, Sensor AF which uses the sensor built int

    Review: Olympus E-420
    2008-05-28 02:55:00
With the new E-420, Olympus has created a true "go anywhere" digital SLR -- especially when paired with the new 25 mm "pancake lens". The E-420 offers great photo quality, snappy performance (in most respects), live view, and both auto and manual controls, all in a compact, well-built body. That doesn't mean that the E-420 is perfect, though. Its design isn't for everyone, images are slightly soft, there's no image stabilization available, and the contrast detect AF leaves something to be desired. Despite that, the E-420 is a great D-SLR, and one which I can easily recommend. As I mentioned, the E-420 is currently the smallest digital SLR in the world. While Olympus has made some changes to the grip to make it easier to hold, the camera still isn't for everyone -- so check one out in person, if you can. Like all of Olympus' D-SLRs, the E-420 is very well built. It may cost $499, but you wouldn't know it; the body is made almost entirely of metal, and there's not a single part of it that

    Olympus E-520 Digital SLR Review
    2008-05-28 02:33:00
First impressions are important, as that's where most of us make a decision in the camera shop. As soon as I picked up the camera I was on the wrong footing. Had someone forgot to add the meat to the flesh? The light weight sent out the wrong signal. Then I tried Live View and was instantly disappointed by the slow focusing speed. Yes it's one of the few that has AF in Live View but I couldn't help wanting something that didn't hunt around while using it. And to top it all I got confused with the menu system. It took me a while to become familiar with the Olympus E3 and as I had't handled that for a while I'd forgotten the different system. So It's not going well. But then as I start to take photos, switch off Live View and get back to using the real camera I begin to see that there's a very impressive set of features housed in a mid-priced camera. As the images start to build up on the memory card I'm seeing a very good metering system that delivers consistently accurate exposures, a bu

Review : Olympus Zuiko Digital 25mm f2.8 Lens
    2008-05-26 08:15:00
HandlingThe small size and narrow depth of this lens can make it difficult to mount on the camera although, once fitted, it's an excellent match to the E-420 body. However, the close proximity of the focusing ring to the camera's body makes adjusting focus manually a little tricky, especially for users with large hands or limited dexterity. It's probably best to use this lens in autofocus mode wherever possible.Autofocusing was fast and accurate under all shooting conditions. Hunting was negligible, even in very low light levels. No compromises were required for flash photography, thanks to the small size of the lens. Margaret Brownmore : photoreview

Review : Olympus Zuiko Digital 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens
    2008-05-26 08:10:00
HandlingThe 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 lens feels very well balanced on the E-420 body and its size and weight are a good match to the E-420's compact size. Moving through the zoom range requires roughly a third of a turn and we found the markings on the lens barrel corresponded pretty closely with the actual focal length settings. The front of the lens extends without rotating by approximately 58 mm when you zoom from 40mm to 150mm.The focusing ring appears to have infinite movement and it was difficult to estimate how much it had to be turned to go from the closest focus to infinity. However, since it can only be used when manual focusing is set in the camera, we feel most users will stick with autofocusing most of the time.Autofocusing was generally fast and accurate with the supplied lens and the lens covered the full autofocus range in less than a second. We noticed some hunting in low light conditions but none with normal light levels. As expected, hunting was more common with longer fo

    Olympus E-3 - full review
    2008-05-12 11:35:00
The Olympus E-3 is the long-awaited new flagship of the Four Thirds standard. The E-3 doubles its predecessor's resolution to 10 Megapixels, features tough weather-proof construction, built-in image stabilisation, a fully-articulated screen with Live View, and of course the legendary SSWF anti-dust filter. Olympus has also addressed two concerns with the Four Thirds standard by equipping the E-3 with a large viewfinder and a new 11-point AF system which it claims is the World's fastest. It's an impressive specification, but directly up against models like the Nikon D300, not to mention the more affordable Canon EOS 40D and Sony Alpha A700. To find out how it compares and whether it's a contender in the semi-pro market, check out our Olympus E-3 review - and as always for a demonstration of its features, see our Olympus E-3 video tour.

Asian Stocks Fall Most in 3 Weeks; Toyota, Olympus Lead Decline
    2008-05-09 04:58:03
May 9 - Asian stocks declined the most in three weeks, led by automakers and technology companies, after Toyota Motor Corp. and Olympus Corp. forecast lower profits on rising raw-material costs. Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker, slumped after saying higher gasoline prices and a U.S. economic slowdown will erode profit. Olympus, the world's sixth-biggest maker of cameras, tumbled the most in three months. China's stocks slumped on speculation a report will show inflation accelerated, prompting the government to boost measures to curb growth. ``The global economy is slowing and at the same time automakers like Toyota aren't able to sufficiently pass on continually rising materials costs,'' said Shuichi Hida, who helps manage $850 million at Plaza Asset Management Co. in Tokyo. The MSCI Asia Pacific Index lost 1 percent to 149.11 as of 5:04 p.m. in Tokyo, its biggest decline since April 18. The measure is poised for a five-day, 1.7 perc

Hands-on with the Olympus E-420: Pancake day
    2008-05-02 08:36:00
The Olympus E-410 was our Editors' Choice of cameras last year, and the E-510 was our travelling companion around CES earlier this year. We didn't think it was possible for entry-level dSLRs to get much lighter on their feet, but Olympus has pulled a rabbit out of the hat with the E-420, a teeny-tiny dSLR that gets even nimbler with the addition of a dinky pancake lens. The E-420 is a 10-megapixel camera that weighs a mere 440g. One-handed operation is no bother at all, and at 130 by 91 by 53mm, it practically nestles in the palm. Sure, small SLRs aren't everyone's teacup, but there's no denying the portability of this little fella.Images are raw or JPEG, recorded to CompactFlash or xD picture card. An optical pentamirror viewfinder gives 95 per cent coverage, while live view is available on the 69mm (2.7-inch), 230,000-pixel screen. As with higher-end models such as the E-3, live view now allows for what-you-see-is-what-you-get real-time previewing of shooting tweaks like depth of fiel

Red Sea diving with Olympus E-3

Red Sea scuba diving with Olympus E-3 : The Olympus E3 is the new flagship based on the Four Thirds standard E-System. The Olympus E3 is an extremely advanced camera that can be used for every assignment and fully complies with the strict requirements of DSLR photography. I was given the opportunity to try out this camera underwater. Underwater the circumstances are different than on land and it demands a lot from the camera. The biggest problem is bleaching by the sun. A wide-angle shot of the coral and the sea usually doesn't turn out nice at the spot where the blue water and the lighter area of the surface meet. But the Olympus E-3 is perfectly capable of dealing with large differences between light and dark areas. > Read our Olympus E-3 underwater review.Karin Brussaardmore : letsgodigital

    2008-04-17 10:56:00
Today Olympus announces a firmware update for the following three Zuiko Digital Lenses:Zuiko Digital 28-84mm equivalent (ED 14-42mm Four Thirds) f3.5-f5.6 lens;Zuiko Digital 80-300mm equivalent (ED 40-150mm Four Thirds) f4.0-f5.6 lens;Zuiko Digital 50mm equivalent (ED 25mm Four Thirds) f2.8 lens. This firmware update will improve the focusing precision of these lenses by using Imager AF in combination with the Panasonic (Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd.) Olympus Zuiko 14-35mm f/2.0 Digital ED SWD Lens Review
    2008-04-15 14:05:00
Some (very) minor griping aside, if you're a Four Thirds shooter there's really nothing not to like about the Olympus Zuiko 14-35mm f/2.0 Digital ED SWD, which is exactly as it should be for a high-end piece of kit. Overall, this lens, with its excellent image quality and speed, is ideal for working photojournalists, especially – a group of photographers among whom the Olympus system has already gained a reasonably strong foothold. With its wide to moderate telephoto range, it's equally well suited to shooting portraits (though it may be a little short yet for some kinds of portraiture work) or architecture. If it's not quite visually subtle enough for indoor/social shooting, the 14-35mm certainly brings the requisite performance for this kind of work from an aperture standpoint. Beyond its size and weight, then, the primary mark against the flagship Zuiko is that all of this power will likely come at a rather considerable cost, though we'll have to wait until units begin hitting sto

    Olympus E-3 – A Second Opinion
    2008-04-14 09:24:00
In conclusion, I really do want to like this camera. I understand that the 4/3 sensor provides engineering issues over the larger sensors, but whilst Canon and especially Nikon are providing ISO's in their reduced sensor cameras that are eminently usable at 3200 or even up to 6400 ISO (in the case of Nikon's D300), I would really like it if Olympus could engineer a camera which was capable, (image quality wise across the board), of matching my EOS 30D, which goes back a generation of model development. 6400 ISO would be nice, but for me, the IQ and functionality of digital reached a point I was happy with several years ago, and the Olympus just does not reach this. The E3 promises much on paper, and is a quantum leap up from the E-1 in terms of usability and speed, but unfortunately Olympus have managed to pull off that trick again of producing a product which is seriously compromised in comparison to what their competitors offer for the same or even substantially lower price. The Nikon

Olympus Zuiko Digital 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 ED review
    2008-04-08 12:56:00
The Zuiko Digital 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 ED is the standard kit lens which Olympus supply with their lower-tier DSLRs, including the E-420 and E-510. Announced in September 2006 to accompany the launch of the E-400, it shares that camera's defining characteristic, being remarkably compact in size. Indeed it takes advantage of the relatively small size of the Four Thirds sensor to be comfortably the smallest and lightest DSLR zoom lens currently available, great for those users who wish their camera systems to be as portable as possible. However despite its diminutive size, the 14-42mm still packs in some fairly exotic optics to deal with aberrations, in the shape of one extra-low dispersion (ED) glass element and two aspheric elements. It also incorporates a circular aperture diaphragm, which Olympus claim should provide 'beautiful rendition' of defocused areas of the image, and indeed consider to be one of the big advantages of this lens. The icing on the cake is an internal focusing system

Olympus Zuiko Digital 12-60mm 1:2.8-4.0 review
    2008-04-08 12:54:00
The Digital Zuiko ED 12-60mm 1:2.8-4.0 SWD is Olympus's latest upmarket standard zoom, announced to accompany its E-3 flagship DSLR in October 2007. Firmly placed in what Olympus refers to as its 'Pro' lens lineup, this lens offers a near-ideal focal length range for a standard zoom (24mm to 120mm in 35mm-equivalent terms), combining a useful wideangle for landscapes and architecture with a telephoto extending nicely into the classic 'portrait' range. Hopefully this 5x zoom range isn't so ambitious as to introduce unacceptable optical compromises. The optical configuration is sufficiently exotic to offer great hopes in this regard; the lens boasts no fewer than three extra-low dispersion (ED) glass elements, one of which is aspherical, coupled with two further aspherical elements, and as the icing on the cake one Super ED glass element. Clearly Olympus has adopted a "no holds barred" approach to lens design here, which can only be applauded. This lens also sees Olympus finally adopting

    Olympus E-420 Review
    2008-04-05 07:49:00
CONCLUSIONSThe Olympus E-420 is touted as the "world's smallest digital SLR" and there is no doubt the camera is compact and light – mounting the 25mm lens and ready to shoot with a CF card onboard, my review unit weighed in at just under 18.5 ounces. As DCR.com editor David Rasnake mentioned in his First Thoughts piece on this camera, with the 25mm lens onboard in particular, the E-420 is approaching mid-size ultrazoom territory: 5 x 3.5 x 3.75 inches, versus the Canon S5 IS at 4.6 x 3.15 x 3.06 inches and about 18 ounces. To be fair to the Canon, it does pack a zoom lens featuring a 36-432mm focal length range, while the Olympus is stuck at an equivalent 50mm, but it's still a fairly dramatic example of just how small a full-featured DSLR can be.Make no mistake about it, the E-420 didn't cut out features or performance on its way to being small. Typical DSLR manual controls and a full suite of automatic modes, a better-than-average continuous shooting rate, live view (if you insist

Hamburg, 3 April 2008 – The Digital Imaging Websites Association (DIWA) has bestowed a prestigious Gold Award on the Olympus E-3. The flagship of the Olympus D-SLR range was cited as a worthy winner due to its unique technological features in four key areas: speed, live view, image quality and versatility. DIWA is an association comprised of a pool of independent web-based specialist publications from across Europe. The DIWA jury was won over by the E-3’s unbeatable combination of features, including “the world’s fastest autofocus (with SWD lenses), Live View in combination with a multi-angle monitor, 10MP image resolution and a built-in sensor shift image stabiliser.” Continuing the accolades, the judges noted that: “Excellent handling and ergonomics, high image quality, and compatibility to the outstanding range of powerful, yet compact range of ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses, have been highly appreciated in numerous DIWA tests, qualifying the Olympus E-3 for a DIWA Gold Award.”Th

    Olympus E-420 photo gallery
    2008-03-22 13:10:00
Olympus E-420 digital SLR camera : Its predecessor has been around for a while so it's high time to introduce a fresh sibling of the Olympus family to the world. Time for a new FourThirds SLR; the Olympus E420. The appearance of this camera is not that much striking since we are already acquainted with the E410 as an ultra-compact DSLR and the Olympus E420 is comparable. However, Olympus have carried out some rigorous internal changes that lift in particular the image quality to a high level. The image sensor remains the same in relation to sensitivity and ISO 1600 is the highest possible setting. The sensor itself has been somewhat improved and Olympus claim that it nearly equals the quality of the Olympus E-3. A claim that certainly draws the attention to Olympus!Dennis Hissinkmore : letsgodigital

    Olympus E-420 First Thoughts
    2008-03-21 11:19:00
When the Olympus E-420 was announced a few weeks back, there was lots of talk from the company about how compact and light their latest entry-level 10.0 megapixel DSLR was. With lots of smallest/lightest/fastest claims bandied about out there, we were appropriately skeptical. As it turns out, though, they weren't kidding. In its current group of competitors, if the Nikon D60 is a sedan, the Canon XSi an SUV, and the Pentax K200D a school bus, the E-420's like a Mini Cooper. While it's not that much smaller or that much lighter than its closest competitors when the hard specs are pulled out, reductions in key dimensions certainly make it look and, more importantly, feel smaller.David Rasnake more : digitalcamerareview

Olympus E-3 DSLR (14-54mm kit): Review
    2008-03-12 12:24:00
Features & Operation:The Olympus E-3 retains the universal 4/3rds system. There's a whole host of lenses to chose from to add some serious icing to your existing Olympus E3 cake. This compatibility is not just limited to Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses however - take your pick from recent additions from Panasonic (via the LUMIX DMC-L10 DSLR), amid a range of Sigma glass. The particular Olympus ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm (28-108mm equiv) f/2.8-f/3.5 lens that comes with this kit is a real joy. Focusing isn't at record-breaking speeds, but from lens to image the quality is held superbly. Hats off to Olympus, as many manufacturer's kit lenses really don't bring the full potential of the camera body out. In fairness, this is a 'High Grade' or 'Pro' lens ; there's and a 'Super High Grade' or 'Top Pro' 14-35 f/2 and a 'Standard' grade 14-42 f/3.5-5.6 covering roughly the same zoom rangeThe Olympus E-3 body looks more 'businesslike' than the smaller entry level models such as the Olympus E-510 and the

    2008-03-05 10:28:00
Hamburg, 5 March 2008 – The latest addition to the Olympus E-System, the E-420, represents a winning formula for both seasoned photographers and entrants to the D-SLR domain alike. Users benefit from the remarkable quality only D-SLR photography can deliver, yet also enjoy the ease of use usually only associated with a compact camera. Olympus Zuiko ED 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 Lens Review
    2008-02-23 12:14:00
When Olympus recently introduced their updated flagship E-3 DSLR, they also offered up three new zooms designed especially for that camera. The most interesting and certainly the most versatile of these lenses is the Zuiko ED 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 SWD ESP zoom.Olympus is clearly hungry for a larger slice of the lucrative DSLR market, as evidenced by the impressive capabilities and generous feature set of the new E-3, and providing a high-performance kit lens like the 12-60 for this pro-level DSLR is a very gutsy move. Will it pay off for Olympus? Only time (and sales) will tell. ERGONOMICSLens MountThe Zuiko ED 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 SWD ESP zoom is offered only in the four-thirds system lens mount. Olympus E-510 Part 3—Hands-on Experience
    2008-02-21 14:58:00
In the previous two installments I explained why I decided to get an Olympus E-510 and how I figured out how get reliable and consistent results from its meter. And once again, just so there’s no misunderstanding, the E-510’s meter is no less reliable or consistent than any other. You just need to take the time to understand how it works, the same as you (hopefully) would with any other camera. My primary reasons for buying the E-510 were its portability, flexibility, in-body image stabilization (IS), and the availability of high-quality, compact, reasonably fast, yet reasonably priced lenses in the range I wanted. My only lens so far is the 14–54mm ƒ/2.8–3.5 Zuiko, which will soon be followed by the 40–150mm ƒ/3.5–4.5 Zuiko. I’ve been shooting for over 30 years, so I know exactly what I need to get the types of photos I like to shoot, which include travel, architecture, street scenes, candids, portraits, and abstracts. Needless to say, your needs may differ. My normal p

    The Olympus E-3; A Pro-Caliber 10Mp D-SLR
    2008-02-17 12:14:00
The new “flagship” of the Olympus E-System, the E-3 replaces the 5-megapixel E-1 introduced in 2003. This 10-megapixel model shares no components with its predecessor but a quick glance through the specifications may suggest that it’s similar to the EVOLT E-510. In truth, the E-3 is more advanced in virtually every respect, boasting superior technology, an entirely new AF system, and additional high-end features. It’s more desirable in other aspects, too, including more rugged construction and a fully articulated LCD screen that makes Live View far more practical. There has been some debate about the E-3’s “professional” designation. Some participants agree that it’s a “pure professional” D-SLR as Olympus has suggested because of its tank-like construction, pro-style controls, and pro-oriented feature set. Others view the E-3 as a “prosumer” model like the Pentax K10D, Sony A700, Canon EOS 40D, and Nikon D300. (In truth, the D300 also qualifies as a pro camera by

    DCRP Review: Olympus E-3
    2008-02-14 10:56:00
The E-3 ($1699) is the flagship camera in Olympus' digital SLR lineup. It is the long-awaited follow-up to the E-1, which was introduced way back in 2001 (back when our reviews were in purple). Olympus didn't just slap a new badge on the E-1 and call it the E-3 -- this camera is new from the ground up. Some of the highlights on the E-3 include: * A 10.1 effective Megapixel LiveMOS sensor * Sensor-shift image stabilization * Live view on a flip-out, rotating 2.5" LCD display * World's fastest autofocus when paired with the 12 - 60 mm SWD lens pictured above (according to Olympus) * Shoots at 5 frames/second * Weather-sealed, very well-built body * Dust reduction system * Large optical viewfinder * Dual memory card slots (xD + CF) * Hot shoe and flash sync port; supports wireless flashes straight out of the boxAnd there's a lot more too, and I'll cover those features in the review of the E-3, which starts right now!by Jeff Kellermore : dcresource

Olympus E-430 DSLR digital camera image and specifications: Is this real?

Now maybe this digi-cam is for real maybe it isn’t so take this one lightly, according to the source links below and the image above it seems it is real, the image is showing the Olympus E-430 digital camera which is yet to be announced.Apparently this digital camera is the follow up from the Olympus E-330 DSLR, this one true or not supposedly is a 12-megapixel cam which also boasts live-view plus a 2.5-inch LCD screen that flips out. There is also a wired remote option and little higher shooting frame rate which is continuous, what I personally love is the design really and going by the image above surely this is the real deal.Markmore : product-reviews

    A Second Look: Olympus E-3
    2008-02-12 11:02:00
With the flurry of winter camera introductions at PMA, it's worth revisiting last fall's most noteworthy DSLR.The people at Olympus have been known to joke about the Olympus E-2, the digital SLR that should have succeeded the pioneering but long-in-the-tooth Olympus E-1. I'm not clear how close to reality that camera ever came, but no matter. The Olympus E-3, the E-1's long-awaited, much-anticipated top-of-the-line successor, skips generations not just in name but in technology, and was worth the wait. We've covered this ten-megapixel DSLR nut by boltelsewhere on the site, so it's not my intent to get into a detailed technical discussion. I shot a lot of pictures with it when it first came out (see the attached gallery, shot in Puerto Rico), and I thought image quality was excellent despite its smaller-than-average Four Thirds-format image sensor. Olympus credits this in part to the fact that the E-3's photodiodes -- which actually do the light gathering -- are the same size as the one

    Olympus E-3: First Thoughts
    2008-01-15 01:52:00
Nikon and Canon have dominated the professional DSLR market since the beginning of the digital revolution, effectively condemning Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Leica, and Sony DSLRs to second tier status. That's too bad because there are some really exciting and very pro-capable digital SLRs on that second tier, including the new Olympus E-3.It's a popular fallacy that professional photographers (and serious amateur shooters) need system cameras. The standard argument goes that second tier manufacturers like Olympus, Panasonic, Sigma, Leica, and Pentax can't produce cameras that are tough enough to stand up to the rigors of pro use. Other common complaints are that second tier camera manufacturers don't offer a wide enough selection of high quality lenses to cover the needs of professionals, that their professional product development is appreciably slower and less comprehensive than the majors, and that their pro support networks, when compared to Canon and Nikon, are much less effective. 2008-01-10 11:51:00
Olympus today announced that it is taking a leadership position in providing Canadians and Canadian retailers with U.S. retail price parity. Olympus Zuiko Digital 70-300mm Field Test
    2008-01-03 11:39:00
Let me start by saying a couple of things.Number 1…I don’t tend to take photos of brick walls, bank notes, or test targets. I can understand why some people feel the need to scrutinize over the performance offered by their equipment. Photography is an expensive hobby. However I’m a little more laid back than some…so I tend to take my new purchase into the wilds and shoot what I normally shoot. If I’m happy with the results then I tend to be happy with my purchase. With that said, I think of this article as a field test rather than a true review.Number 2…I am a big fan of the 1st generation Zuiko 40-150mm. It does have some warts. I’ve said before that photographing birds-in-flight with this lens is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. It will work…but it’s not the most practical tool for the job. Yet I actually really like the lens because of all the things it does well. It’s cheap. It’s light. It is compact enough to slip into the pocket of my photo jacket. It is

Olympus e-510 Cheaper at U.S. Online Shops
    2007-12-28 01:28:08
The cheapest I got; retail price in Malaysia (online) for the Olympus e-510 is around USD$787 which is USD$182 more than offered on a few well known U.S. online shops (prices are inclusive of shipping costs to Malaysia!). The price comparison is for the single kit lens Olympus e-510.*Feeling Nauseous*It is hard not to notice that the price is a rip off compared to buying the Olympus e-510 camera packages over the internet. It is not a mistake because 5 or more U.S. online shops are offering similar prices for the same items.

    2007-12-19 12:56:00
OverviewThe new Olympus E-3 is the flagship of its digital SLR line and combines speed of operation--from startup to capture—with live view and dust-reduction capabilities. It has body-integrated mechanical image stabilization that works with every Zuiko Digital lens, a 10-megapixel sensor, all housed in a dust and splash-proof magnesium alloy body. The camera's shutter is rated up to 150,000 cycles, so it should withstand heavy duty and professional use. I had a chance to test the camera under a wide range of challenging conditions on the island of Puerto Rico and was impressed by the E-3's handling and image quality. It's fastThe E-3 has an eleven-point biaxial cross type AF system, five frames-per-second continuous shooting, and 1/8000th second top shutter speed. Camera Test: Olympus E-3
    2007-12-14 08:52:00
First impressions matter, especially for photographers seeking a picture-taking partner. But sometimes it takes a real effort to figure out if a DSLR is the perfect match for you. For instance, when Olympus introduced us to its new 10.1MP E-3 ($1,700, street, body only), it seemed like love at first sight (see Hands On, December 2007). Yet we needed time (and Lab tests of a production model...how romantic!) to confirm our first impressions. Are we still enamoured? Even more so. This new Olympus flagship DSLR proves that the Four Thirds system has a bona fide place in the pro and advanced-amateur photographer's kit.Continuing the innovation begun with the E-1, its predecessor, the E-3 incorporates such features as the Supersonic Wave Filter dust reduction system, as well as staples of its sub-$1,000 DSLR line, such as live view with autofocus and sensor-based image stabilization with live confirmation.Olympus replaced the E-1's sluggish AF with a super-fast, 11-point biaxial AF system.

Olympus E-3 DSLR Sample Photos Are Live!
    2007-11-27 23:12:00
An Olympus E-3 DSLR review camera arrived on my doorstep on Friday morning. Not wanting to waste any time, I promptly started charging the battery so I could get the studio photo work done. The photos are all done and the camera has been passed on to photographer / journalist Laurence Chen, who did our E-510 review, among others. I think he’s a great choice for the PhotographyREVIEW.com E-3 pro review. In the meantime, all the product shots are done, as are the controlled studio sample photos. I wanted to make the sample photos available immediately, since I know there’s a lot of interest in this camera. They were shot at all ISO settings and are available at full resolution so you can compare them, print them, or evaluate them however you want. We hope to have a complete review done in the next two to three weeks.Photo-Johnmore : photographyreview

Olympus announces RC wireless flash units FL-50R and FL-36R
    2007-10-17 15:32:00
London, 17 October 2007 - Forget dealing with cumbersome cables when wanting to get perfect lighting for your photographic subjects. Thanks to the new Olympus remote control (RC) wireless flash units FL-50R and FL-36R, cordless lighting set-ups are a convenient reality. Both are ideal for use with the Olympus E-3 professional D-SLR which enables the control of up to three different flash groups directly from the camera – no separate commander unit is required. Photographers benefit from extreme flash unit versatility and never again need to be hindered in the studio or in the field by troublesome wires.Giving professionals the freedom and control they need to operate effectively in the studio or in the field, the FL-50R and FL-36R flash units enable flash photography minus the complication of cords and inconvenient set-ups. Control is possible directly from the camera without the need for cables. These units represent the ideal accompaniment to the OlympusE-3, which features a newly-developed RC Data Transfer System that transmits data optically. This significantly reduces the power consumption of the built-in flash when being used as the system commander. A wide range of flash-related settings can also be easily accessed and adjusted using the camera’s LCD panel as the user interface. Moreover, flash control is available in three groups, allowing flash mode and compensation settings to be set independently for each group – thus enabling ultra-precise illumination.Four remote control communication channels can be set by the user to avoid interference with other peripherals in the vicinity. Photographers also have the option to control wireless transmission distance by choosing between three signal strengths – for a range of up to 10m. And both flash models incorporate adjustable heads which can be swivelled without impeding their ability to communicate. Using their slave function, the FL-50R and FL-36R can also be used with other Olympus SLRs with manual flash facility and Olympus SP series cameras capable of slave mode operation. Furthermore, both models can also be interlocked with a large strobe in the studio. The irradiation angle of each flash unit can be set either by automatic zooming according to the interchangeable lens used or manually. Thanks to a built-in wide panel, the expansive irradiation angle required with a focal distance of 8mm (equivalent to 16mm in 35mm terms) is covered. FL-50RThe high-performance FL-50R boasts multiple adjustment modes including TTL Auto and manual, high-speed synchronisation – in Super FP Mode up to 1/4000th sec – and also features fast recycle intervals which can be as little as less than 1.3 sec. when using the SHV-1 Flash High-Voltage Set. The FL-50R boasts GN28 performance at a 12mm focal length (equivalent to 24mm on a 35mm camera; ISO 100) and a very powerful GN50 at a 42mm (equiv. to 84mm; ISO 100). FL-36REnhancing mobility, the lightweight FL-36R boasts power in a compact design. The flash unit allows 1/8EV-step accuracy to satisfy the high light metering precision digital photography demands. And with GN20 at a focal length of 12mm (equiv. to 24mm; ISO 100) and GN36 at 42mm (equiv. to 84mm; ISO 100), this wireless flash unit is particularly well-suited for high-action assignments. Optional accessories for enhanced lighting effectsThe Bounce Adapter FLBA-1 can be mounted on the FL-50R flash head and diffuses the irradiation light to soften the bounce light by attenuating the contours of shadows produced in bounce shooting. The FLBA-1 comes with the FL-50R and is also compatible with the Olympus FL-50 flash unit. Meanwhile, the Reflector Adapter FLRA-1 not only provides a catch light effect, it also softens the effect of bounce lighting by providing auxiliary frontal irradiation to eliminate shadows caused by bounce shooting. Able to be used in both ceiling and wall bouncing, it allows photographers to take advantage of bounce lighting more often and in a wide range of situations. The FLRA-1 comes with the FL-50R and is also compatible with the FL-36R, FL-36 and FL-50 Olympus flash units. The remote control wireless flash units FL-50R and FL-36R will become available in November 2007 and December 2007, respectively. Each comes with a flash stand to ensure a steady footing during remote use. Matched with shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th sec. and 5fps sequential shooting (with a 19 image RAW buffer in burst mode), the E-3 gives photographers a crucial edge to help capture that decisive shot. Ensuring the best image quality in the widest range of situations, this new professional model also incorporates a powerful built-in image stabilisation system which is capable of compensating against the effects of camera shake to the equivalent of up to 5 EV steps. This is complemented by a 10 Megapixel High Speed Live MOS sensor and Olympus’ TruePic III image processing engine. Together with the ZUIKO DIGITAL lenses - which are custom-made for the needs of D-SLR photography - photographers can rely on optimal results each time. Meanwhile, the camera’s Live View capabilities provide the freedom to shoot with more versatility: Whether wanting to keep eye-contact with the subject or shooting above the head or close to the ground, compositions can be framed with ease on the 2.5”/6.4cm multi-angle HyperCrystal LCD, which also faithfully displays the effect of camera adjustments in real time. In addition to Live View, photographers can also choose to use the camera’s large viewfinder which provides 100% coverage. Like all Olympus E-System cameras, the E-3 incorporates the most effective dust reduction system available - the Supersonic Wave Filter. Reliability of the camera system is further heightened under all types of shooting conditions thanks to dust and splashproof protection of both body and most E-System lenses. Moreover, a shutter life of 150,000 operations guarantees that the E-3 will tolerate the treatment of even the most active photographer with ease. The Olympus E-3 will be available from the end of November 2007. Speed - never miss an opportunityThe E-3 boasts the world’s quickest* autofocus system. It is based on a fully-biaxial high-speed 11-point AF system with both horizontal and vertical sensor lines to give a total of 44 different data points from which the correct focus is accurately calculated. In addition, pixel multiplication technologies are used to boost performance in low light (-2EV at ISO 100). Meanwhile, fast shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th sec. provide the ability to freeze action dead in its tracks - no matter its pace. And giving users an advantage over the clock when every second counts, shooting speeds of up to 5fps in full Megapixel mode are possible (with 19 image RAW buffer in burst mode). Image quality - picture perfect performanceTo counteract the effects of image blur caused by shakes, the Olympus E-3 incorporates a highly advanced, built-in image stabilisation system. It is extremely effective and utilises the breakthrough Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD). This means sharper shots every time - no matter which lens is used - and less need to use a tripod as compensation up to 5 EV steps is provided. The IS system features two modes: One for shakes along both the x and y axes, while another stabilises only the y axis - which is ideal for following moving subjects during sports photography. Significantly contributing to the camera’s excellent imaging performance is the 10 Megapixel High Speed Live MOS sensor. Its attributes for delivering high image quality are boosted even further thanks to integration of the advanced TruePic III image processor which improves noise suppression, enhances colour reproduction and enables faster processing speeds. And together with lenses from the award-winning ZUIKO DIGITAL range, the camera returns nothing less than perfect depictions. Live View - unprecedented controlThe E-3 provides photographers with the convenience of a continuous Live View on its multi-angle, 2.5”/6.4cm HyperCrystal LCD. This allows for truly unique shots from the most unusual perspectives, as it enables experimentation with completely new shooting styles. Photographers can do and see more as they needn’t stay glued to the viewfinder. Thanks to the option of LCD magnification of 5x, 7x and 10x, accurate focusing during macro shooting is also made easy. In addition, the effects of Shadow Adjustment Technology (SAT), White Balance and Exposure Compensation can be viewed directly on the LCD in real time: So, what you see is really what you get. Reliability - exceptional durabilityThe E-3 also takes viewfinder performance up a notch. Full professional level coverage of 100% plus 1.15x magnification enhances framing ease even when using the eyepiece. Since the development of the world’s first dust protection system in 2003, Olympus has continuously improved on it so that it still remains the most effective solution available today. The critically acclaimed Supersonic Wave Filter ingeniously protects the High Speed Live MOS sensor from dust and other foreign particles that could otherwise compromise image quality and serves as a symbol of Olympus’ long-standing commitment to imaging excellence. Its magnesium alloy construction combined with dust and splashproof protection lets the E-3 go wherever the action is: No matter at a rainy football game or on the dusty plains of the Serengeti. The power grip and a wide selection of lenses are equally protected against the elements, thereby considerably reducing the risk of downtime as the E-3 is always ready for the next assignment no matter the conditions. And with a shutter life of 150,000 operations, professionals will really come to appreciate this model’s extreme reliability. Ideal selectionNaturally, low light doesn’t put an end to shooting opportunities. In addition to the built-in flash (GN13), the E-3 allows wireless control of flash units, such as the new Olympus FL-36R and FL-50R, in up to three groups - enhancing lighting options dramatically. In addition, the E-3 boasts flawless automatic white balance. This is due to a hybrid detection system which employs a dedicated white balance sensor in conjunction with the image sensor. The combination of colour data from two different sources results in stunningly faithful colour reproduction. A complete D-SLR systemAdhering to the Four Thirds Standard, the E-3 is optimised for the special demands of digital photography and provides photographers with a superior level of flexibility and freedom. Cross-manufacturer compatibility ensures a future-proof investment that users can rely on. 32 lenses and three lens converters are available to date, including many from the award-winning ZUIKO DIGITAL range, which is designed for the specific demands of digital SLR photography. Furthermore, Four Thirds enables a smaller, lighter lens construction which means photographers benefit from more mobility and control, thus increasing the likelihood of magnificent imaging results. In addition to the many lenses which include the recently-introduced ZUIKO DIGITAL SWD models for attaining the world’s fastest* autofocus speeds, a wide and exciting range of E-System accessories await professionals looking to customise their photographic experience with the E-3. For flash control without the need for cables, Olympus offers the FL-50R and FL-36R wireless flash units. And for assignments that go into overtime, the Power Grip HLD-4 provides long-lasting battery power and conveniently includes a shutter release button on its side to make the quick capture of shots in portrait format just as simple as landscapes. Two new eye-cups (DE-P3 and DE-N3) are also available to broaden the camera’s dioptre correction adjustment capabilities. Shifting the dioptre either up or down by 3m-1, an expansive total range spanning -6m-1 to +4m-1 is possible. Moreover, the optional FS-3 Focusing Screen provides a grid matte screen in the viewfinder on which the image area is divided into 4 x 6 sections to assist in framing (purchase & installation via Olympus Service Dept. only).
