| | The French Horn, That Wild Card of the Orchestra | | 2008-08-13 22:25:29 | | By ALLAN KOZINN : Orchestral instruments don’t come more treacherous than the French horn, either for the musicians who play it, or, when the going gets rough, for the listeners who find themselves within earshot. Sometimes you wonder how the instrument found its way from the hunting lodge to the orchestra.

Mackay talk about their recent trip to Chennai, India.Chennai - 'Rain, Sweat & beers' (Part 2)Fantastic players and really lovely people to work with. Andrew conducted and I (Garry) stayed in the control room to record everything in to Pro tools. Most of the tracks involved lots of over dubbing and layering so the tacks generally have at least 63 strings and often more. We like a big cinematic sound! I (Andrew) have conducted orchestras in a few places – Brussels (!), Mumbai, London and Chennai – The most exciting and fulfilling have to be the guys in India. Mumbai has always been our home for our own album but it was exciting working with the legendary Chennai Massive! Three of the guys on celli knew me from the Mumbai Sessions with US rockers VAST. We had the cellist flown in for that gig. The guys in Chennai were wonderful beyond compare and played divinely to boot! They made it easy ( or easier) for us and they seemed to | | By: Six Degrees Records News | | |
| | Bombay Dub Orchestra, Exclusive! | | 2008-01-18 11:29:00 | | Bombay Dub Orchestra's Garry Hughes & Andrew T. Mackay talk about their recent trip to Chennai, India.Chennai - 'Rain, Sweat & beers' (Part 1)Our trip to Chennai, India, was always going to be a tiring one but that is part & parcel of long sessions after a long journey. Our journey on this project started back in 2005. We were asked to re-work a track for the artist Karen David - Karen was born in Assam, North India but has spent most of her life growing up in Canada and now lives in London. Since then we have co-written several tracks and are nearing the completion of her debut album due for release in 2008.This trip to Chennai was to celebrated film composer and artist AR Rahman's studio situated in the film district of the city formerly known as Madras - Rahman, according to Wikipedia is the 25th best selling artist in the world and has amassed sales figures in excess of 100 million albums! Our flight to Mumbai wasn't too bad but it was the expected wait of 6 hours for the connecting flight to Chennai that I knew would throw us. I had a plan and our good friend composer Gurmeet Singh, son of revered composer Uttam Singh ( Dil to Pagal Hai, Pinjar etc) , met us at the airport and we headed over to Juhu to the Marriot hotel for middle-of-the-night munchies and a good old catch-up. Gurmeet was pretty wacked and had the flu so we felt pretty bad dragging him into town. Still, we had a good time and passed a few more hours. We headed back to the airport and got our next flight down to Chennai at 6.45 am.After being met at the airport in Chennai we headed to the rather plush Green Park Hotel in the film area of the City. We quickly got ourselves checked in and found our rooms. A bit of rest and then focus on work. Although we had three days before our recording sessions I (Andrew) needed to do some additional work on the scores. So it was set up the mini studio and score away! Our first sessions were on the Monday and we were to start the day with Percu | | By: Six Degrees Records News | | |

| | Exploding Star Orchestra - We Are All From Somewhere Else | | 2007-10-09 23:01:00 | | Exploding Star OrchestraWe Are All From Somewhere Else[Thrill Jockey, 2007]I was quite thrilled – and indeed a little surprised – by the appearance of cornetist Rob Mazurek’s new outfit Exploding Star Orchestra at Pepper Jack’s Café (now, with the demise of The Underground, Hamilton’s best music venue). Mazurek, a long-time player in the influential Chicago scene, has surrounded himself with an all-star cast of players including Nicole Mitchell, Mike Reed, and the seemingly omnipresent John McEntire. After numerous live performances throughout 2005-6, the band retreated to McEntire’s studio for recordings which resulted in this year’s release of We Are All From Somewhere Else on the venerable Thrill Jockey imprint.Unlike Mazurek’s previous outfits such as Chicago Underground Duo, Exploding Star Orchestra is more rooted in trad jazz. “Sting Ray and the Beginning of Time”, the opening suite of the album, would hardly sound out of place within Charlie Mingus’s outpu | | By: progressive imposition | | |

| | The Low and Sweet Orchestra | | 2007-07-19 19:55:00 | | This short lived, but great band, was a one of a kind mix of people and genres. You had Dermot and Kieran Mulroney (who were both in Career Opportunities the movie that introduced me to Jennifer Connelly and changed my life), James Fearnly from the Pogues, Mike Martt from Thelonius Monster, and Zander Schloss from Thelonius Monster and the Circle Jerks. I was lucky enough to see them once at The Coach House and once at The Foothill - a classy joint that picked up where Bogart's left off in Long Beach. Their music was a mix of celtic, rock, punk, country, and sea shanties, and their one album - Goodbye to All That - is long gone. You can probably get used copies on the net somewhere. Here are a couple of tracks off of it - Dirty Freddy Johnson - MP3Pencils and Shades - MP3The band didn't last long before breaking up. Since then Thelonious Monster has gotten back together, and some of the other guys started a new band called Cranky George. | | By: Squidmonk Blog | | |
| | Spok Frevo - Amazing Orchestra from the Northeast | | 2007-06-18 21:39:40 | |
The video here really speaks for itself, so the best I can do is give a little background about Frevo.
The word Frevo comes from the Portuguese verb 'to boil,' 'Ferver' (frankly it's a mis-pronunciation). In a general sense, Frevo refers to myriad musical traditions with origins in the Northeast (Nordeste) of Brazil. The main region in which one encounters Frevo is clearly Recife, on the coast of Pernambuco. This culturally-rich city is also the exclusive home of Maracatu, another, even rarer, type of Brazilian music.
The music itself is often thought of as Polka-ish, largely due to its 'two-feel' beat and peppy tempo. I suspect that many share my opinion of Frevo as being quite a bit more pleasant and listenable than polka, but perhaps I'm alone on this one. Characteristic features of the Frevo march include the prevalence of umbrella-wielding dancers and fast, repeating snare drum patterns.

| | Warren Civic Orchestra Concert - March 18th | | 2007-03-11 17:38:00 | | The Warren Civic Orchestra will be performing a Memorial/Tribute Concert to the late Dr. Jaropolk Lassowsky at 4 PM, Sunday, March 18th at the Struther's Library Theatre in Warren, PA.The concert will feature pieces arranged by Dr. Lassowsky including a suite by Debussy, Variations on La Folia, and a Flute Quartet. Also featured will be the first and fourth movements of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony.Admission is free and a reception will be held at the theatre at the conclusion of the performance.****I approach every concert with some trepidation. As stated many times, I'm not overly comfortable performing, even with a group. Practicing generally doesn't ease my worries. Invariably, I will take my seat on stage in my concert dress and I find that my fingers have turned to ice, accompanied by sweaty-palm syndrome. My throat dries up and my jaw clenches with concentration.
