    Black and White Orchids
    2008-03-23 09:02:00
Black and White OrchidsYesterday I attended the New York Orchid Show again. The flowers were still fresh and I saw a couple of Orchids that either I missed last time or were new. I took both of my Point and Shoot cameras (or compact cameras as I like to call them) with me to try and shoot a couple of Black and White images. I call them compact cameras since they are capable of running on full manual settings, if you want. I can never believe all the technology that is packed into these little boxes. I think that Orchids are detailed enough to give some interest to a black and white photo and once the magnificent color is stripped away you are down to the shape of the flower.I didn’t get the names of these orchids on purpose, although you may see color versions of the same flower in a later post. These are not conversions from color. They are shot in the ‘monochrome’ setting on the camera. I think the camera seems to take a better picture when it is set to black and white then the

    Two More Cymbidium Orchids
    2008-03-06 06:17:03
Two More Cymbidium OrchidsAsian Corsage OrchidCymbidium Rosita ‘Easter Pink’(sim-BID-ee-um)Couple more shots from the 2008 New York Orchid Show at the NYBG in The Bronx. One thing I like about the Cymbidium Orchids is the bloom with these great clusters of flowers. Another thing is the wonderful colors they come in. Some are subtle and others are bold.A lot of people visited Digital Flower Pictures.com yesterday and I want to thank everyone for stopping by to take a look at the pictures. I visited a lot of blogs yesterday too and I hope I can catch up with some of the rest of you later in the week. Since I have started full-time work I have been very tired at night. It always takes a couple of weeks to get back into the swing of things at the start of the season. It feels great to be outside and doing what I was meant to do.I made Post of the Day at David McMahon’s Author Blog. David is a fabulous photographer and a brilliant writer. Definitely exciting for me to be recognized by

    Calanthe Orchids
    2008-02-04 08:37:18
Calanthe Orchid(kal-AN-thee)The Orchid collection at Planting Fields was beautiful and bountiful. There were some that I hadn’t seen before and some common ones. These two Calanthe Orchids were really out in force and I couldn’t help snapping a few photos as I strolled by. The first two pictures are Calanthe ‘William Murray’. I didn’t find much reference material on this cultivar but did find out that the genus Calanthe has about 200 species, most of which are native to Asia. The 200 species includes both evergreen and deciduous plants. That is a new one on me, as I didn’t know there were any deciduous Orchids.Calanthe ‘William Murray’Here is a link to the best article I found. It includes some history and detailed repotting instructions:merkles orchids.comThis plant’s tag said Calanthe ‘rosea’On Friday I decided to get out my Nikon Coolpix 5400 and maybe use it over the weekend. When I turned it on the Auto focus light was blinking and the monitor was black. It w

    Basic Tips for Growing Orchids
    2008-01-05 04:17:00
Orchids are beautiful and comes in many colour and appearances. Most orchids are epiphytes which requires no soil to live. This makes orchids more difficult to be grown compare to the normal houseplant. These are some basic tips for growing orchids for some nice buds:Where to Buy?Find a reputable nursery. Ensure that you get a properly labelled plant and you can return to them for some advice. You also can find websites that sell hard to find plants. How to Spot a Good One?Check their leaves. Pick plants with glossy green and intact leaves. Check also their roots. Good ones are with a robust root system. Small intervals of past flowering is also good. What It Needs? In the wild, they receive light that been shaded by large trees. So, give them this same amount of sunlight, maybe using some sunlight filters. When unsure, don't water that day. Give them some weak weekly fertilizer for fertilizing.Common Problems?Scales can form on the underside of the leaves. Discard heavily infested plants. Failure to flower is usually because of poor growing conditions, especially inadequate light and fertilizer.Hope it help. Two Orchids
    2007-08-09 12:10:00
Two OrchidsThis Orchid was blooming at work. I was surprised to see it . I took all the Orchids out of the conservatory and just tucked them in among the tropical foliage plants that I put on the terrace. I usually don’t bother with the Orchids as they seem to be getting enough light and water. The tag that was in the pot had faded away and I couldn't tell what the name is.I have been going over some old files from Florida in February of 2006. I saw this orange Orchid blooming at Nancy Forrester’s Secret Garden. I read a lot of complaints about the condition of the garden and the admission price but I found it a lot of fun with a good mix of botanical stuff. Not bad at all for an ‘in-town’ type of garden. I uploaded several new pictures to my Florida Keys webpage if anyone is interested. There a few good pictures but in some respects represent an extra culling of all of the files.
