    Oregon: Heading Your Way
    2008-08-14 14:30:00
I just wanted to let everyone know that I am going on vacation tomorrow. There are several guest bloggers lined up for the days I'll be gone. I'm not sure how many posts will be put up while I'm gone, so if you see a reduction in daily posting, it's cause I'm gone. No worries, though. I imagine some interesting content will show up from Tia and John and what not, since both of them are fantastic bloggers that I follow on Google Reader fairly regularly. Thanks to them for volunteering to help me out. There are some others I'm hoping will accept my invitation soon too, and if they do while I'm gone, thanks for blogging for me!Anyway. I will be gone for about a week. I'm going to Oregon with my girlfriend to see some of the family and to take a little roadtrip. We're going to see some neat stuff, and a certain special location located in Portland that she'll be excited for.Anywho!

The health of hospice; Hospice services in Central Oregon are concerned about new federal funding cuts
    2008-08-07 03:10:37
There’s little debate about it. The hospice program is widely considered one of the great successes of the Medicare program. Instead of spending hundreds of thousands for futile treatments at the end of life, hospice allows Medicare beneficiaries to opt for palliative care designed to allow them to live out their remaining days comfortably while [...]

Tax Deductibility Initiative Qualifies for Oregon Ballot
    2008-06-29 23:00:00
In November, Oregon voters will vote on Initiative 3, which would allow taxpayers full deduction of federal income taxes on Oregon state income tax returns. Currently, the deduction is limited to about $5,500. Petitioners gathered some 82,000 signatures to qualify the initiative for the ballot. Before 1974, Oregon taxpayers could fully deduct federal income taxes on their state taxes, but that year a $3,000 limit was instituted (which would be about $13,000 in 2008 dollars). In 1980, the amount was increased to $7,000 ($18,000 in 2008 dollars), but reduced to $3,000 in 1987, and increased to $5,000 in 2000 with annual inflation adjustments. Also in 2000, voters rejected a measure 45% to 55% that also would have made federal income taxes fully deductible. (See today's Daily Tax Report article by Tom Alkire for this history.)The Legislative Revenue Office says that the measure would reduce state general fund revenue by 13 percent, or about $550 million. Ad Wars: New Minnesota, Oregon Senate Ads
    2008-06-28 23:03:06
Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV.Senate Watch: MinnesotaThe Coleman camp has released another ad meant to soften his image and limit his ties to the Republican Party. In "Hard Times," Coleman talks about the challenges facing middle class voters--rising food, fuel, and education costs. "If you can bring people together, you can actually make a difference--you can get things done," Coleman says in closing.Senate Watch: Oregon"No one loves the land more than the farmers, loggers, and ranchers who care for it," Republican Gordon Smith notes in his latest ad, "Home." The ad has a folksy feel and is full of images of nature, but I'm not really sure what the message is here.

Ad Wars: New Georgia, Oregon Senate Spots
    2008-06-21 00:13:52
Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV. Subscribe for free today.Senate Watch: GeorgiaDemocrat Dale Cardwell has released the first ad of the Georgia Senate race. Cardwell talks about the need for change and a fresh perspective in the ad, "Let's Change Washington." Cardwell will face off with several other Democrats in the August 5th primary for the right to go against Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss in November.Senate Watch: OregonRepublican Gordon Smith's latest ad, "Guts And Independence," features two Democrats, former Congresswoman Elizabeth Furse and state Senator Avel Gordly, talking about their support for the incumbent. The women portray Smith as a bipartisan deal maker, suggesting he's stood up to President Bush and national Republicans on the Iraq War. The independent appeal and break with Bush is a message his campaign has worked hard to instill, avoiding the Republican brand at all costs.

Oregon man survives cancer after experimental treatment
    2008-06-20 08:14:00
An Oregon man, given less than a year to live, had a complete remission of advanced deadly skin cancer after an experimental treatment that revved up his immune system to fight the tumours. The 52-year-old patient's dramatic turnaround was the only success in a small study, leading doctors to be cautious in their enthusiasm. However, the treatment reported in Thursday's issue of the New England

    2008-05-21 07:01:36
Illinois Senator Barack Obama wins primary in state Oregon. Obama was ahead of Hillary Clinton 59% to 41%. Even more - he gained enough pledged delegates to get a majority of all those available in the democratic presidential nomination race. Obama congratulated Clinton on her great Kentucky victory and praised her as a pioneer. Also he made the an attack on McCain, saying, "The lobbyists who rule George Bush's Washington are now running Sen. McCain's campaign. McCain is not change."

Ad Wars: Oregon's Smith Seeks "Middle Ground"
    2008-05-20 10:05:22
Check out our entire video library at Political Realm TV.Senate Watch: LouisianaThe NRSC is stretching a little bit in its latest attack, this time against Louisiana Democrat Mary Landrieu. Taking a page out of the 2004 presidential playbook, the web ad portrays Landrieu as a flip-flopper, citing several recent bills that Landrieu voted both for and against. Of course, it's a ridiculous charge given the nature of the Senate, but the NRSC is apparently hoping voters are stupid. The most egregious part of the video, however, is the effort to suggest Landrieu lacks leadership Louisiana voters deserve because she hasn't made an endorsement in the Democratic presidential primary. Seriously? No doubt the NRSC is disappointed that Landrieu hasn't endorsed Obama, so that they could attempt to tie her to his "bitter" comments (that ploy hasn't been so successful in recent House contests, just ask the NRCC). Senate Watch: OregonRepublican Gordon Smith is up with a new ad, "Middle Ground," i

Oregon : The Last Domestic Kitchen Frontier
    2008-04-28 19:18:59
Allot of people when they think of their industry, they think of big corporate outcroppings and a managerial team. Society and data tells us this is the way to money and success. While monetarily this may be true, what if you are looking for personal success? The kind of success not measured by your bosses' attendance sheet?Have you ever wondered about having your own business? Not everyone is geared for the roles a business owner plays: Owner / advertiser / footman /On-call employee / Marketer / accountant --- the list goes on and on. Once you commit to your business - you are fully vested. Fully vested - meaning all your output, whether emotional / intellectual / physical / financial, is going toward your business. Most businesses require to be vested in all of the above, to truly function successfully. If you are not committed to this requirement, your business most likely will fail.I have been thinking allot about my goals in life and I am currently researching (heavily

ORblogs -- a great resource for Oregon bloggers
    2008-04-14 12:34:00
Tix•R•Us Geek Events just got listed in ORblogs very recently. ORblogs is an excellent blog catalog in its own right, and it is especially excellent for anyone with a local business or organization in Oregon. What I really like about it is it breaks the catalog down by town. There were 65 registered blogs in my hometown of Corvallis, only 7 in neighboring Albany when the Tix•R•Us Geek Events was added, and of course hundreds in Portland. I expect those numbers to grow as news of ORblogs gets out. I wish them the best and thank them for this excellent resource. As I was surfing the Corvallis blogs, not too surprisingly, I found a few belonging to people I know or wish I did. Here's just a few, and believe me I intend to get to all of them but for this initial list I cherry picked people I know, and/or blogs that had been very recently updated. A Merrier Christmas in Oregon
    2007-12-25 00:00:00
I hope Santa Claus brought you exactly what you wanted this morning. Oregon residents might have us beat, though, in that the state refunded part of their income tax payments just before the holiday:Checks have arrived in mailboxes all over the state, thanks to an only-in-Oregon law that requires rebates to taxpayers when income tax collections top projections by more than 2 percent. All told, the state has doled out $1.1 billion in rebates.[...]"It is pretty well spent," said Portland resident Linda Stockton, who got a check for about $600. "And I bought $100 worth of canned goods, and gave it to the food bank. I bought about 20 pairs of mittens for foster kids."The rest, she said, was spent on "clothes for me."[...]"I don't trust (government) to spend our money wisely," said Paul Hansen of Portland, whose family got a check for $1,161. Judge in Oregon Rules Teacher Cannot Bring Gun to School

Cal, Oregon Don't Have Dorrellitis Yet
    2007-09-16 20:16:00
Matchups against California State University at Fresno and the Louisiana Institute of Technology typically will not get any top twenty-five team riled up to play them. Therefore, it is the head coach's responsibility to adequately prepare his team for the upcoming matchups. UCLA's Karl Dorrell has failed to do this over his coaching career as the Bruins will often lose to teams that they should easily defeat. On Saturday, both Cal's Jeff Tedford and Oregon's Mike Belotti did what Dorrell couldn't do, beat a lower echelon Division 1-A football team in convincing fashion. While both Tedford and Belotti have experience Dorrellitis (the ability to lose games to inferior football teams) in the past, they made a strong statement with their convincing performances on Saturday.Led by Justin Forsett's 152 rushing yards and three touchdowns, Cal thoroughly dominated Louisiana Tech, 42-12. The victory marked the Bears' third consecutive 30-plus point scoring output with the offense flexed its musc

    Jet Lag in Oregon?
    2007-06-07 17:43:00
Last week, during a post-race interview seconds after winning the 110m Hurdles at the Reebok Grand Prix in NYC, Chinese superstar Xiang Liu admitted to having jet lag. His winning time of 12.92 was only four one-hundredths off his world record of 12.88. Obviously, the jet lag didn't affect him too much, or else he found a way to handle it.Jet lag is a real physiological symptom that affects 90% of us. Most world-class athletes are used to dealing with its effects. Some of the international athletes competing at this weekend's Prefontaine Classic will have to cross at least 10 time zones in order to get there. They'll be dealing with it for sure. Let's hope that are as successful at doing so as Xiang Liu was last week. Speaking of Xiang Liu, how fast will he run now that he's had a week to recover from his jet lag?
