Brad Pitt Creating New Orleans Homes for People Effected by Katrina, Earned My Respect Not for Acting or Good Looks but Doing Good Things
    2008-07-18 18:10:10
It is funny how the crazy things some celebrities do to get the most attention. While Brad Pitt is doing some great thing hardly gets any news coverage at all. I think it is somewhat weird on what our society focuses on is the negative new stories. Brad Pitt has earned my respect for doing something positive for the people affect by Katrina. That is why I am talking about him today on my blog today because he is doing good.He is building houses in New Orleans with much of his own money along w...

Bait and Arrest: New Orleans sleazy set-up of homeless people
    2008-07-12 10:08:18
I've been a little worried about the state of homeless organizing in New Orleans, although of course it's hard to tell from 1,500 miles away. One of the homeless blogs I track hasn't had a new post since February; another is very sporadic. An article in yesterday's New Orleans City Business Blog has me shaking my head in disgust. I can only hope that community groups in New Orleans are able to bring this practice to an end.Apparently the N.O. police are leading cigarettes, beer, and, for some reason, Boston Baked beans in unlocked cars with the windows rolled down, and then parking these vehicles near homeless encampments.NOPD made its first arrests June 10. For stealing less than $6 in items, police charged two homeless men with simple burglary, a felony that can carry up to 12 years in prison. Neither suspect had any prior arrests in Orleans Parish. It’s been more than a month since their arrests and the men are still sitting in Orleans Parish Prison, waiting on court dates.Given...

San Antonio Spurs Beat the New Orleans Hornets
    2008-05-19 22:56:00
The Spurs shot better from downtown and from the line. Manu Ginobili even shot better from three-point territory than all the Hornets combined. They also grabbed more rebounds (offensive and defensive), and they dished out more assists than the overrated Hornets. It is no surprise that they won. They managed to limit David West to 20 points, which is what they needed to win at New Orleans Arena. And Peja Stojakovic, who is one of the most experienced players in the team, played horribly. Brad Pitt: King Of New Orleans
    2008-03-31 19:48:00
The Question is: Did Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie get married? What’s your belief on this matter? Next, will they live happily ever after? How many kids will they have? What’s really going on with this couple? We need to know. Right? Well, public relations or not, these two tinsletown titans are doing some nice humanitarian work. We keep our eyes on them because of their fame, but they are showing themselves to be more than run-of-the-mill Hollywood spectacles - their showing a very human side. Who new Hollywood could be so humanistic.Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been going around, especially Brad Pitt, doing quite loving actions. They have; along with Madonna, been saving some of this world’s poorest children, an act I thought was only for publicity. I surely don’t think that way now. I felt Angelina Jolie was just following her man, Brad Pitt, just going along with the scheme. But considering Brad’s lastest act of courage and kindness I must give him a standing ovat...

The Phinsider Community Mock Draft: Pick #10 - New Orleans Saints
    2008-03-27 12:13:06
With the 9th pick in The Phinsider Community Mock Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC. Ellis picked up 80% of the vote, which is the largest total so far.  A distant second place was Keith Rivers with 5%. So here's how the last 5 picks in our draft have gone: Kansas City Chiefs - Ryan Clady, OT, Boise St. (30%) New York Jets - Vernon Gholston, DE, Ohio St. (56%) New England Patriots - Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, Tenn St. (32%) Baltimore Ravens - Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU (41%) Cincinnati Bengals - Sedrick Ellis, DT, LSU (80%) To see the entire draft so far, click here. Next up, rounding out the top 10, are the New Orleans Saints.  Below are the Saints' needs, courtesy of NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Defensive Tackle: Brian Young, Hollis Thomas & Kendrick Clancy are all okay but there is not an impact player among them and it is probably time to bring in a difference maker in the middle of the line. 2. Outside Linebacker: Scott Fuji...

New Orleans - it's NOT too late to make a difference
    2007-12-16 08:55:00
Before Katrina: 6,000 homeless people in the city. After Katrina: 12,000, some of whom have been camping across the street from City Hall. The mayor was going to kick everyone off last week, but now it's been postponed. What wasn't postponed, unfortunately, was the bulldozing of the first of four public housing projects. The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign (PPEHRC) had joined community activists in trying for a temporary injunction. That failed, because the judge said City Council had voted to demolish the projects four years ago. The destruction of three other projects, however, may be able to be held off indefinitely. At lest 3,000 people who used to live in public housing remain scattered throughout the country. It's not that public housing in New Orleans before Katrina was so great; it needed and deserved renovations. The N.O. Housing Authority wants to replace the public housing projects with mixed-income, mixed use developments. Sounds great in theory, but too often is just an excuse for the displacement of poor people. The PPEHRC National Coordinator Cheri Honkala is calling on all of us to make sure HUD knows we are watching them. We want the existing public housing projects preserved and renovated. (Actually, we want a lot more than that, but let's start here.)Secretary Alphonso Jackson U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development451 7th Street S.W., Washington, DC 20410Telephone: (202) 708-1112 TTY: (202) 708-1455(press #6 for employee directory) HUD Inspector General Hotline for complaints: 1-800-347-3735TDD: (202) 708-2451The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign is a movement of organizations to which my organization, Arise for Social Justice, belongs. Today, in addition to a wealth of guestrooms, the hotel features 27,500 square feet of meeting space and 22,500 square feet of street level retail space. Buffalo Opens Pre-Season with Victory in New Orleans
    2007-08-11 07:29:31
Two picks by Greer (left) helped seal the win (Photo Courtesy: BuffaloBills.com) The Buffalo Bills opened their 2007 pre-season schedule with a 13-10 win last night against the New Orleans Saints. Despite the win, the Bills looked sloppy in their first game action since early January - the defense gave up big plays, the offense looked rusty and the team didn't get into a great rhythm until parts of the second half. But some big plays from some unlikely names sealed the win for the Bills, who are now 1-0 this pre-season. Linkage: Game Thread :: Game Preview :: Canal Street Chronicles As I mentioned in the Game Preview linked above, I spent the majority of this game closely monitoring four positions: running back, wide receiver, cornerback and the defensive line. With three pre-season games remaining, there are plenty of opportunities to analyze other positions. Here's what I saw at RB, WR, CB and DL tonight: RB Depth is Deep, Versatile By no means was Bu...

Buffalo Bills vs. New Orleans Saints - Open Game Thread
    2007-08-11 02:01:43
13 at 10 FINAL SCORE Game Preview :: Canal Street Chronicles Update [2007-8-10 22:50:17 by Brian G]: Game, set, match. Solid way to end it for our defense, who sent a few blitzes to keep Palko from pulling a Falco and winning the game. I've seen better pre-season performances, but the young guys made enough plays to win this one. Full analysis to come early tomorrow morning; be sure to cast your vote for Player of the Game in the new poll to the right! Update [2007-8-10 22:42:55 by Brian G]: Two-minute warning, and Palko (Falco?) is driving the Saints down the field. I'd love to see our young defense make one more play to lay this thing to rest, but they've looked more like a broken dam than a defense tonight. Update [2007-8-10 22:38:58 by Brian G]: This is why I love the pre-season. Why not try a 54-yard field goal? Rian Lindell had a ton of leg on that one and drilled it right down the middle; the Bills lead 13-10 with about 3 minutes remaining. Fred Jack...
