Author: Cricky Posted: Sun Jul 20, 2008 5:10 pm Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar Saturday moved to dispel any suggestion he was running away from dope tests ahead of the Champions Trophy, saying he will be the first to give a sample. Pakistan will conduct dope tests on its 30-man preliminary Champions Trophy squad on Sunday to avoid any further embarrassment following paceman Mohammad Asif's failed test in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Akhtar, who tested positive for nandrolone in October 2006, said he has no fears ahead of the September Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan. "I will be the first to give dope test on Sunday because I have no fears and will also give fitness test once I gain rhythm," said Akhtar, who was banned for two years for the positive test. "We have assured fool-proof security measures for the Trophy and there is no reason for us to believe that the tournament will be relocated from Pakistan," Naghmi, chief operating officer of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), said. The meeting comes amid renewed fears about security in Pakistan following a suicide blas

    2008-07-08 21:22:56
NEW YORK, July 7: US President George Bush has said that the biggest challenge for the next President of the United States would be Pakistan and not Iraq or even Afghanistan, according to a report in the US News and World report on Monday. The report quoted veteran journalist Bill Kristol of Fox News as saying that “in a mostly off-the-record meeting with a small group of journalists last week, President Bush “conveyed the following impression, that he thought the next president’s biggest challenge would not be Iraq, which he thinks he’ll leave in pretty good shape, and would not be Afghanistan, which is manageable by itself. ... It’s Pakistan.”“The Pentagon has “requested that Bush sign an ‘executive order’ expanding its authority to go after these (Al Qadea) commanders in Pakistani territory.” But some in the Administration are reluctant to cross that line for fear of destabilizing Pakistan’s recently elected government.”—Correspondent

Series of blasts terrorises, mystifies KarachiKARACHI, July 7: Terror struck the city six times within an hour on Monday as unknown terrorists triggered a series of blasts that wounded over 50 people, including children and policemen. The blasts occurred between 7:05pm and 7:50pm, with an interval of eight to 10 minutes, at Banaras Chowk, Orangi Town, Pak Colony and Shahrah-i-Noorjahan.The DIG of Karachi West, Aleem Jaffery, told Dawn that 41 people were injured in the series of blasts at five places. “No one was killed in the blasts, however,” he added.Observers and analysts found the serial bomb attack in the provincial capital different from the usual pattern of terrorist strikes in the country. Most of the bombs used were of a low intensity and designed more to spread panic than to cause large-scale human casualty. Most of the suicide attacks over the past one year have targeted law-enforcement personnel or, in the case of some areas in the North-West Frontier Province, political

Dozens of white Europeans have trained in terrorist camps in Pakistan's tribal regions in recent months, U.S. intelligence sources tell ABC News, in what officials fear may be the beginnings of a new breed of al-Qaeda-affiliated terrorism."Al-Qa'ida is improving the last key aspect of its ability to attack the U.S.: the identification, training and positioning of operatives for an attack in the Homeland," according to a February Threat Assessment report from the Director of National Intelligence."[W]e have seen an influx of new Western recruits into the tribal area since mid-2006," the report said. They're recruiting operatives from Europe. Why? If you're from Europe, it doesn't require a visa to fly to the United States," Mike McConnell, the director of National Intelligence, said in a speech in March. More...

    al-Qaeda In Pakistan/Afghanistan: Potential Solutions?
    2008-06-18 14:42:55
Much has been made (and rightly so) about Gen. Petraeus's and Amb. Crocker's frank admission a month or so ago that al-Qaeda’s main base of operation and greatest threat come from Pakistan/Afghanistan - not Iraq.Of course, that was stating the obvious known all along.Indeed, many (including yours truly) have been clamoring the same said obvious - however, that this simple fact is at last admitted openly in testimony before Congress, and that said admission was actually proded out by elected representatives, constitutes nevertheless a significant moment. In order to fully appreciate such significance, let us first go back to the core-reasons for the Afghanistan War (emphasis added): At the time, President Bush justified the launching of the Afghanistan War as a response to 9-11 and the failure of the Taliban to meet his demands concerning terrorists, including delivering Osama bin Laden. Following the trauma and outrage brought by 9-11, an overwhelming majority of Americans supported t

    2008-06-18 09:00:00
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has pleaded for years with Islamabad to stop Taliban fighters based in Pakistan's tribal regions from launching attacks in Afghanistan. In the past, Karzai has complained that Pakistani security forces have turned a blind eye to the Taliban's cross-border attacks, allowing them to strike and then flee back to safe havens in Pakistani territory. But on June 15, Karzai raised his criticism to a new level. He accused Pakistani forces of supporting Taliban leaders in the tribal regions, and threatened to send Afghan troops across the border to kill extremist leaders. More...

Pakistan's Frontier Corps: Friend or Foe?
    2008-06-13 14:58:00
The dustup between the U.S. and its Pakistani counterterror allies over a June 10 firefight on the Afghanistan border has stirred up new questions about Islamabad's commitment to the fight and the loyalties of its border guards. According to Pakistan, at least 11 of its paramilitary Frontier Corps border force were killed by coalition forces firing into Pakistan from inside Afghanistan this week. Pakistan
    2008-06-12 00:00:00
For over four thousand years, what is now Pakistan was one of the main prizes in the territorial tug-of-war between the Indian sub-continent and Central Asia. The vacuum left by the collapse of successive empires was filled by waves of princes, warriors, traders and refugees; forty-odd years after its creation, the ‘Land of the Pure; is still a country of migrants. The mohajirs who arrived from India at partition were followed by over one million Afghan refugees. Although united by a common religion, they remain fundamentally divided by their origins, languages and sects. The ‘Great Leader’ of the new Muslim state founded of the “parting of the ways” in 1947, died before realizing his vision. Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s modern democracy: has often proved too fragile to withstand the pressures from within and without. Pakistan’s dynamism is still offset by insecurity; material progress is discounted in the light of limitations imposed by authoritarian governments. The patriarchal

The Pakistan Taliban (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan or TTP) is in the process of gaining territory and power within Pakistan, as a result of numerous "peace treaties" and agreements to empower the Taliban to enforce an anti-freedom theocracy based on Sharia law in Pakistan.
