| | | Anxiety Relaxation Techniques For Panic Attacks | | 2008-01-22 09:00:25 | | Anxiety relaxation techniques for when a panic attack hits. The body's immediate response is to fight the symptoms making the attack worse. Relaxation is what helps them go away.A panic/anxiety attack occurs when your body is extremely stressed and can no longer manage the stress. Your heart races, you start hyperventilating, your vision dims, you get dizzy. At the first sign of panic/anxiety, the key is to relax. Here are the techniques that work:1. Deep Breathing: Put one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach. Take a deep breath in and make the hand on your stomach move and the hand on your chest remain still. Takes a bit of practice, but with practice it gets easier. Take a deep breath in and hold it for a count of three. Then breathe it out through your mouth and count to five before taking the next deep breath. This prevents you from hyperventilating during an attack. You need to practice this breathing daily for at least ten minutes so that it becomes an automatic response. Eventually, it comes secondary in nature.2. Muscle relaxation: Starting with your toes tighten the muscles for thirty seconds to one minute until they start to ache. Then completely relax the muscle group letting it go limp like spaghetti and repeat the process until you know how to relax the muscle. Repeat this with all the muscle groups- fingers, hands, arms, shoulders, neck, legs. Practice this relaxation daily. When a panic attack hits, you mentally check to see which muscles you have tensed up and then relax them.3. Basic/Beginner Yoga- Yoga is a great form of breathing and relaxation. Through the technique you will learn to correctly breathe and get much needed exercise at the same time. Buy a beginner yoga video or enroll in a Yoga class. Practice it daily.4. Music- Take some time out every day and listen to relaxing music. Recommended music choices are any soft piano, Windham Hill Artists, Nature Sounds, Jim Brickman, Jesse Cook, Jim Chappell, Steve Halpern, Alex Jones & | | By: Stress Control | | |

| When You Need Medication For Panic Attacks | | 2007-07-18 14:24:07 | | By: Ian Jefferson It is necessary to take panic attack medication for the treatment of panic disorders. There is a wide variety of medications available and most need a prescription and cannot be purchased over the counter. When a person suffers from a panic disorder, the symptoms may include accelerated heartbeat, palpitations, sweating and various forms of distortions. One of the problems associated with suffering from severe panic attacks is that the person suffers from fear and anxiety of future panic attacks which may increase the symptoms and could cause other health problems. Treatment with panic attack medication is therefore essential.Panic attack medications that allow the individual to feel calm, relaxed and at ease belong to a group of medicines referred to as Benzodiazepines, also referred to as sedatives or tranquilizers. When taking this form of panic attack medication, one may experience a decrease in panic attack disorder symptoms. The disadvantage of using Benzodiazepines is that they are addictive and cause constant fatigue. Various forms of this type of medication include Librium, Valium, Ativan and Xanax.Antidepressants are also a form of panic attack medication which is used to treat long-term symptoms of panic disorder. On many occasions, the individual suffering from the panic disorder is also suffering from depression, therefore this form of treatment is utilized. Antidepressants work with the neurotransmitters in the brain, which send and receive messages, to control the symptoms caused by the anxiety disorder. Various types of antidepressants include Celexa, Pamelor, Elavil, Prozac and Luvox, to name just a few. These antidepressants all work with either one or two neurotransmitters in the brain, each targeting a particular source or symptom of anxiety. When taking this form of panic attack medication, there are a number of adverse side effects that one may suffer from. As with any medication, not all individuals suffer from these side | | By: Stress Control | | |

| | 10 Rules for Coping with Panic Attacks | | 2007-05-20 07:00:43 | | Three or four years ago, I was taking a shower before work in my apartment when I was suddenly overcome with an intense panic. My heart started to race, my breathing became shallow, and I jumped out of the shower not knowing what hit me. Part of me knew I was in no mortal danger, however that didn’t seem to be the part controlling my body at the time. I turned on my computer, and did a quick Internet search for “panic attacks.”
As I started to read through a few web pages, I came across a very similar version of the following instructions for coping with panic attacks, which I began to repeat to myself over and over…
1. Remember panic feelings are only normal reactions that are exaggerated.
2. They are not harmful and nothing worse will happen.
3. Notice what is happening in your body now. Stay with the present. Slow down, relax but keep going.
4. Thinking about what might happen is unhelpful. Only now matters.
5. Accept the feelings. Let them run through yo | | By: GoBackpacking | | |

Man developed an innate ability to sense danger and prepared their bodies for ready to fight or run away position. This state is called a fight or flight reaction.
