    Papelbon scared
    2008-07-16 16:45:00
From ESPN:Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon blamed the New York media for creating a firestorm that resulted in his pregnant wife being threatened on Tuesday.MLB.com reported that during a red carpet parade for the All-Star Game that went down Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, Papelbon and his wife Ashley were bombarded by insults from fans."I feel like I needed to be in a bullet-proof car," Papelbon said, according to the Web site. "My wife is pregnant and she's getting her life threatened. It's stupid."Mariano Rivera said last night that he was told three days ago (by Joe Girardi via Terry Francona) that he would be used to close if the situation came up. Presumably, Francona told Jonathan Papelbon the same thing."Why then did Papelbon carry on like he did on Monday? It makes no sense. Why say you want to close when you know Mo will be the closer? Just say something polite about Mariano and move on."Anyways enough about the overrated bum!

    Papelbon Is An Idiot
    2008-07-14 16:54:00
From Peter Abraham of the Journal News:Terry Francona has literally said all the right things when it comes to the Yankees, even to the point of saying he’s hitting Derek Jeter second “because that’s where he deserves to be.” Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz, J.D. Drew, Dustin Pedroia … the same. Respectful of the Stadium, the Yankees, the tradition, everything. Then we have Jonathan Papelbon, who thinks he should close tomorrow night. “If I was managing the team, I would close. … But I’m not managing the team,” he said today. Sam Borden and some of the other writers there asked Papelbon whether Mariano Rivera had earned the right to close. “I think we both earned that right.” he said After acknowleding Rivera’s status, he said he earned the right to close by winning the World Series last season. Talk about delusional. It’s Yankee Stadium, he’s having a Cy Young year, Mariano closes. Period, end of story. Terry Francona wouldn’t bite when asked what he would do

    Papelbon: Tampa-Sox Feud Not Done
    2008-06-13 15:17:00
Red Sox closer Jonathan Papelbon is keeping hope alive for a Sox-Rays rivalry:“In my opinion it is a bunch of bull what they did. All I got to say is what comes around goes around. Payback is a bitch. In my opinion, and the way I feel right now, this thing isn’t all settled and done. We still got to play them a few more times and I know when we go into Tropicana things will be a little different than when went in there last time.”Papelbon made his comments on Comcast SportsNet's Mohegan Sun Sports Tonight show. Here's the full interview:The next time the two teams will meet will be at Tropicana Field on June 30th.

Giving Jonathan Papelbon nude photos of your wife will get you a signed ball
    2008-06-11 12:53:42
Getting an autograph from the Red Sox Closer Jonathan Papelbon is easier than you think. All you need to do is provide naked pics of your ex wife: One of them gets the idea that the “moneyshot” picture should be shown to the players in the Red Sox bullpen. So he folds the picture and [...]

    Hank Calls Papelbon a Mouse
    2008-03-15 09:05:00
After about two weeks of silence from The Quote Machine, Hank Steinbrenner is back and doing what he does best, talking to the media.First he went after Papelbon because of this quote from the Boston closer: "I don't know if he's trying to stir things up or not," the Bosox closer said. "I sure as hell don't care, because he sure as hell hasn't stepped on a baseball field. He needs to just stick to pencil-pushing, I guess."From Kevin Kernan:"Being insulted by Papelbon is like being attacked by a

    Lester Looks Better--Papelbon Talks Continue
    2008-03-06 05:06:00
John Lester's second spring training start had a decided edge over his first one. He pitched three innings, without strain, and allowed one run on 4 hits. He threw 56 pitches, 33 for strikes. That's still too many balls for his 56 pitches, but he's heading in the right direction. The Red Sox lost to the Reds by a score of 7-6. Here's what Jon had to say after his encouraging outing..."I got another week under my belt, another bullpen and I just felt more comfortable," Lester said. "You see somebody other than your own team for the first time, you're more amped up. That could have resulted in me being a little erratic Saturday.Right now, I feel good. Mechanically, I'm feeling good and physically, I feel strong. Today, I didn't really get tired, even though it's the first time throwing three innings. I feel comfortable where I'm at right now."Peter here...well said Jon, and we feel the same way, too. Here is the Red Sox pitching summary from yesterday. It seems that Javier Lopez, a lefty

    The Ongoing Papelbon Pay Plea
    2008-03-05 04:54:00
Boston Red Sox elite closer supreme Jonathon Papelbon, who has a new pitch in his arsenal, a slider, has a contract that is coming up for renewal. And he wants a raise. Hey, who can blame him? He was arguably the best closer in all of baseball in 2007, and he wants to be paid accordingly. He'd like something along the lines of what the Phillies' Ryan Howard takes home, an All Star who earns $900,000.00 per year. The club may opt to give him $500,000.00, which is what the White Sox pitcher Bobby Jenks is paid. Paps had this to say yesterday..."It's a tough situation for me right now because basically I'm at a point to where I feel like the position I'm in, there's a certain standard that needs to be put in place here," said Papelbon, who had 37 saves last season, then added one more in the Championship Series and three more in the World Series. "I feel like with me being at the top of my position, I feel like that standard needs to be set, and I'm the one who set that standard."I don't

    Papelbon Rips Hank
    2008-03-02 18:13:00
Though this has nothing to do with this story I felt like posting it.It's Papelbon at a recent charity dance-off the Red Sox held. Nice shirt idiot. From Don Amore:"I don't know if he's trying to stir things up or not," he said. "I sure as hell don't care, because he sure as hell hasn't stepped foot on a baseball field. He needs to just stick to pencil-pushing, I guess. It's different if a player says that because they're the ones stepping between the war lines. Whatever, man. I'm not going to lo

Papelbon Speaks Of Spring Training And That World Series Ball
    2008-02-15 05:02:00
Boston Red Sox pitchers and catchers have all reported to Fort Myers, Florida. Jonathon Papelbon had time to speak of his approach to spring training, and he also mentioned, rather casually, that his dog DID NOT eat that World Series baseball. Now that's great to hear. Here he is from EXTRA BASES..."We're going to sit down and talk about my approach to spring training," Papelbon said, while at the player development complex this morning. "Last spring training I kind of took a starter's approach, building up arm strength and things like that. I think for the first few weeks I'll kind of be more on a starter's throwing program, so to speak. Then go back into pitching every day toward the end of spring training, things like that. It worked last year, so why not try it again this year?"Peter here again, and with Pap's role clearly defined, his approach to the season of 2008 will be a different one. Gone will be the building up process for his arm that he went through last year in preparati

    Papelbon Does the Riverdance
    2007-10-22 22:13:00
Here is Jonathan Papelbon once again doing his version of "The Riverdance" around the Red Sox infield after last night's Game 7 win on YouTube. I did my own version of it at Professor Thom's after Pap did his. I figured that I have more Irish blood than Pap, so my version should be better! It got everyone's attention, and unfortunately (or should that be fortunately?) no one recorded my version for posterity.

    Comeback With Clay And Papelbon
    2007-09-07 12:23:00
Tim Wakefield did not have it last night in Baltimore, giving up 6 runs on 9 hits in just 3 2/3 innings. I wondered if anything was wrong with him physically. It was either that or something else. It was something else. He said this......"I felt fine physically," Wakefield said. "I'm not making excuses, I just didn't make the right pitches when I needed to."Peter here, and I was happy to read that. The Boston Red Sox, down 6-5 after 4, tied the game in the 5th on the strength of a Big Papi solo shot. It was 6-6 after 5 with young Clay Buchholz coming in to make the first relief appearance of his young career. The first three batters reached base. WITH NONE OUT. But he settled down and induced a double play grounder by Miggy Tejada and then proceeded to strike out Kevin Millar, making him look a little foolish. Two perfect innings followed, and his day was done. Said catcher Cash....“Not many 23-year-olds can do what he’s doing. Forget the no-hitter,” said Cash, who caught Buchhol

A Little Something About Jonathon Papelbon
    2007-05-19 13:55:00
I came across an article from today's Nashua Telegraph. And it's all about Jonathon Papelbon. You remember him....that guy who comes trotting out of the bullpen in the ninth inning of games where the Red Sox have a lead, but not too big a lead. And if they're behind, he sits. If it's a Sox romp, he still sits. Such is the life of an elite closer. And we ALL know that's EXACTLY what he is. And aren't we lucky! Why? I'll tell you why. Jonathon Papelbon is in the Red Sox pitching arsenal. Quite an arsenal indeed. Other clubs are drooling over the combination of lefty/righty Okajima and Papelbon. So, I'd like you to read this, and I'd love your comments afterwards. At least until it stops raining, we all need something to do. So thank you Steven Krasner, of the Nashua (NH) Telegraph. Well done. Click on the title, my readers! You'll enjoy. I promise. And why is it that there are no Hideki Okajima tee shirts available? WHY????? There are dozens of Daisuke tees and merchandise out t

Jonathon Papelbon will be returning to anchor the bullpen
    0000-00-00 00:00:00
The Boston Red Sox certainly dropped a bombshell on the general public once again as they announced that Jonathon Papelbon will be returning to anchor the bullpen manning the closing roll once again this year. You may be asking yourself, “What happened to his weak shoulder?” Many Boston Red Sox fans holding their tickets waiting to get in the park through gate C will be asking the same question. With a payroll that is inching closer to 200 million dollars year by year and with the highest ticket prices in Major League Baseball, were the Boston Red Sox really going to go into opening day without a closer that had proven themselves worthy in a previous season? The off-season was filled with plenty of assurance from the front office that Papelbon was going to be taking his turn in the starting rotation when we saw him come April. General Manager Theo Epstein, Manager Terry Francona and others fended off questions about if the Red Sox would put Papelbon back in the pen. It was
