    John Lynch Visiting With Patriots
    2008-08-13 12:34:20
John Lynch was looking for a different situation.  He may have found it with a team that hasn't lost a regular season game in a year and a half.  Lynch is in New England, visiting with the Patriots about an opening the Patriots at safety -- The Patriots are hosting free-agent safety John Lynch on a visit at Gillette Stadium today. The 36-year-old Lynch, a nine-time Pro Bowler and one of the grittier, more durable safeties to play in the NFL, was released by the Broncos on Aug. 1. This isn’t the first time the Patriots have expressed an interest in Lynch. When Lynch was a free agent in 2004, the Patriots visited with him before he signed with the Broncos. The potential addition of Lynch could lessen the blow of losing Tank Williams to a season-ending knee injury. That would be one aging safety crew, with Lynch and Rodney Harrison, though last season's 1st round pick Brandon Meriweather is in play for a roster spot as well. While I wasn't crushed by Lynch's departure,

2008 New England Patriots Betting Picks Nothing has changed this year for the Patriots as they are once again set as the early favorites to win the Super Bowl. 4th of July Head to Head: Patriots vs. Patriots
    2008-07-04 01:43:31
VS Head to Head: American Patriots vs. New England Patriots With the 4th of July saving us from an otherwise boring day, it's important to remember the accomplisments of our founding fathers.  What better way to admire their greatness than to compare them to the "Patriots" of today.Head Coach: George Washington versus Bill BelichickGeorge Washington led the upstart but under armed American Army to a dramatic victory over the British at Yorktown.  Bill Belichick led the upstart but under armed 2001 New England Patriots to a dramatic victory of the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI.Winner: George Washington.  Both were upstarts, but the British were a little less one diminsonal than the Rams.  Besides, Washington dealt with vicious winters, the Rams played in a dome.Leadership: Thomas Jefferson and John Adams versus Tom Brady and Tedy BruschiThis is a tougher battle than it looks, if you're willing to discount the incredible significange of the former for th

Around the AFC East, Week 5: New England Patriots
    2008-06-20 15:19:32
In our final installment of this Friday's version of Around the AFC East, MaPatsFan - head blogger at Pats Pulpit - joins us to discuss the New England Patriots' receiving corps.     How will the Pats' receiving corps work this year?  With Donte' Stallworth out of the picture, is Wes Welker likely to be the team's #2?  Who besides Randy Moss and Welker is likely to see the most playing time?     Pats Pulpit: First, let's delve into how the Patriots use their receivers.  All have differing skill sets and aren't interchangeable, so there's really no #1, #2, etc...  Randy Moss is the seam guy; his particular forte is running down the sideline and pulling down the deep ball.  At 6-4 and 210 lbs, he's physically built for this, too.  He's tall enough to pull down the ball over the heads of shorter defensive backs and he's got long legs to beat those same DBs.  In the middle and on slants, he looks awkward.  That's whe

Patriots Says Lineman Kaczur Will Remain on Team
    2008-06-07 15:52:40
Despite being charged with drug possession, the Pats say that offensive lineman Nicholas Kaczur is going nowhere.  The team did not comment on any disciplinary action it might take against Kaczur, saying only that it was an internal matter and they would be dealing with it from there. The lineman was arrested back on April 27th [...]

Season Rewind: Eagles vs Patriots - Week 12 2007
    2008-05-29 16:55:41
This is the shortcut version of the game. We all know this game ends in a bad way, but it is very entertaining to watch. The Birds defense did a good job of shutting down Randy Moss, but Wes Welker went off. A.J. Feeley had a gutsy effort, but his crucial interceptions to Asante Samuel cost the Eagles the [...]

Around The AFC East: New England Patriots
    2008-05-23 09:30:55
Moving on to the 2nd installment of this week's "Around The AFC East," we now turn our attention to the New England Patriots.  And helping us out is the relatively new blogger over at Pats Pulpit (who is doing a hell of a job, by the way), MaPatsFan.  His response to my question is below.  Head over to his site to see how I responded to his question. Matty I: I haven't really talked with you about last season's Super Bowl, so let's start with that game.  Seemingly everybody thought the Pats would win that game and complete the perfect season.  What exactly went wrong in that game?  Do you blame the offensive line the most for not keeping Tom Brady protected?  Are the coaches also to blame for not really making any adjustments? MaPatsFan:From a philosophical level, I think the Patriots bought into the hype.  They were the heir apparent to the "Perfect Season" crown and paid the price.  NE came to put the crowning achievement on their hist

Everything the Patriots Accomplished Since 2000 is Tainted
    2008-05-13 11:02:00
Now that we've seen some of the SpyGate tapes it's official. The Patriots were cheating. From at least 2000 until last September. Now why would they continue such a practice for so long, even if they thought it was legal? Obviously because they were finding the practice useful. Which means they were gaining some sort of advantage. By doing something against the rules. That is by definition, cheating. The tapes show VERY clear shots of the opposing teams coaches sending in signals. With shots immediately after of the scoreboard to determine the situation in the game. The only reason to do all of this is to be able to know what a defense is going to do based on the situation and the signals from the sideline. If Tom Brady gets that information that's a ridiculously unfair advantage. We cannot assume that the Patriots are alone in taping signals or cheating in general. But they got caught. And they've been very successful during the duration in which it was proved they were cheating. If we

    A Win For the Patriots
    2008-04-22 09:48:00
The Red Sox extended their winning streak to five games yesterday with an 8-3 romp over the Texas Rangers to complete a four-game sweep over them. Clay Buchholz pitched six strong innings in getting his first win since last September 6, as the Red Sox won their fifth consecutive game on the Patriots Day holiday. The offense was alive and well yesterday, and didn't need Manny Ramirez, who was given a day off. David Ortiz appears to be out of the early-season doldrums, driving in three runs on two doubles, including one that Milton Bradley lost in the sun (pictured). Julio Lugo had a big day, going 4-for-4 and a walk. Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits and two stolen bases.Texas' pourous defense didn't help matters either, as a possible double play started by Ian Kinsler instead was thrown past Ben Broussard at first and continued the five-run fourth. But the story of the afternoon was Buchholz, who threw first pitch strikes all afternoon, and was in trouble only once. But he once again should

NEW YORK GIANTS UPSET THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS AND WIN SUPERBOWL XLII
    2008-02-04 13:48:00
Yesterday in Arizona, the New York Giants defeated the New England Patriots for Super Bowl XLII. This was probably one of the biggest upsets in Superbowl history, because the Patriots had a record of (18-1) and hadn’t tasted defeat in more than one year. All throughout the game, the Giants gave the Patriots a taste of their unstoppable defense and the remarkable comeback with 35 seconds on the clock. Tom Brady, who was the NFL’s most valuable player and won his first three Super Bowl’s, w

Giants SHOCK Patriots And Win Super Bowl
    2008-02-04 05:19:00
The New York Giants are the World Champions after they beat the previously undefeated New England Patriots by a score of 17-14. The Giant's defensive coordinator outcoached defensive specialist Bill Belichick, using a vast array of blitzes to keep the pressure on Tom Brady and his offensive line as they held the record-setting Patriots' offense to a mere two touchdowns. The fourth quarter started with a 7-3 score, but MVP Eli Manning twice marched his team down the field for touchdowns, and the Patriots could not retaliate. In one remarkable play, Manning thrice avoided being tackled, which would have spelled doom for the Giants and an undefeated season for New England. Somehow, someway he emerged from the pack of would-be tacklers and connected to Plaxico Burress. That was a miracle play, and I must congratulate the New York Giants, their coaches and their fans. Wow, what a great game! And the fourth quarter was one for the ages. Finally, a Super Bowl that was better than the commerci

    GO PATRIOTS!!
    2008-02-03 09:42:00
There will be no home improvements done today....today is all about one thing (two actually as I'll explain). Today is a great day to be a New England Patriots fan. I've spent many years watching them lose game after game. The last seven years have been a great time to watch them and if we can pull out a win today it will be very special. Today is also a great day because my latest niece has joined us! She was born last night around 3:30 am, 5 weeks pre-mature but doing well. My brother is a football coach so having his daughter born on super bowl Sunday is a pretty special treat.

    Patriots vs. Giants
    2008-02-02 18:58:00
The big game is tomorrow. I know some of you don't care, but I found this article about rumors that the Patriots spied on the Rams in 2002. I find it rather humorous that the spokesman has the audacity to tell us as a fact that the Patriots didn't cheat then when they were clearly caught cheating during this season and were fined tremendously for it. Honestly, whether or not they are telling the truth, I don't believe them. Why? Because they tried to cheat this year doing almost the exact same thing as they are being accused of doing in 2002. Go figure.(Don't click the read more, there isn't any more after this!)

The New England Patriots Are No Miami Dolphins
    2008-02-01 20:54:00
The big game, “The Super Bowl”, is here and everybody is awaiting the best two teams of the NFL to engage in battle. But this will be no average championship contest, one of the teams has captured our attention. These New England Patriots have achieved something that no other team has - except one other team - their nemesis - The Miami Dolphins. The Miami Dolphins(1972)Now these Patriots are a special bunch, this can easily be seen by any football spectator even if their knowledge of the game is a little shaky. This team wins so seeming effortless that you wonder if their opponent is really trying to defeat them. That’s how good the New England Patriots are, they have excellent players in every position. Here’s where the train goes off the tracks for this team and glorious NFL franchise: They are cheaters. The New England Patriots were caught videotaping another team's defensive signals - this is a horrible revelation - how could they? My faith in the New England Patriots and ,

    Real-Time Patriots vs Chargers
    2008-01-20 16:23:26
I felt the need to give my 3rd Quarter review of the Patriots-Chargers game after ANOTHER Brady interception.First, Cromartie, what were you thinking running that ball out of the endzone? You lost your team 15 yards against a tough Patriots team.Second, Brady looks almost horiffic. He has shown flashes of the brilliance we have seen all year, but his stupid "Culpepper-esque" mistakes have put the game in jeopardy for the Pats. It's a shame that San Diego couldn't capitalize on the INT, because Maroney has been eating up the clock in the second half.Pats up 14-12 with 1:30 remaining in the 3rd.

AFC Championship Preview: Patriots v. Chargers
    2008-01-20 09:26:00
This is just the wrong place and the wrong time for the San Diego Chargers. At kickoff its going to be around 8 degrees with the windchill which is 50 degrees colder than what they practice in San Diego. Injuries are also a major concern for the Bolts. As of right now, Phillip Rivers is optimistic that he'll play but he is still listed as questionable. If Rivers can't go for very long or even at all, Billy Voleck will be lining behind center. Volek has a losing record as a starter which has to scare a lot of Charger fans.Pro Bowl Antonio Gates is also doubtful with a dislocated toe. Without Gates, the Chargers lack explosive pass catchers, as wide receivers Vincent Jackson and Chris Chambers are fairly average receivers. The league's top running back LaDainian Tomlinson will play against the Pats, but many are questioning how healthy and effective will he be. Even if LT is unable to go, the Chargers still have quality backups Michael Turner and Darren Sproles. However, quality backups

Jaguars fall to Patriots: Players Postgame Quotes
    2008-01-13 10:34:39
Paul Spicer, Defensive End (On the game plan) We knew coming in you have to get them off on third down, regardless of if they are a four-down team. We had them a couple of fourth downs, but you have to make stops. That is something we did not get done today. (On holding Randy Moss to one reception) They did not get to sixteen and zero by just Randy Moss. I think Wes Welker did a great job; he has been doing it all year catching passes underneath. (On the loss) What happened today is that you cannot make mistakes against a good team. We made our share, including myself. It was nobody's fault, we take a win and loss the same way here as a team. Maurice Jones-Drew, Running back (On the Patriots) They don't make mistakes, they execute real well. It is tough to face a team that way. When you make mistakes they just capitalize on them. Their offense is great and they just make things happen. (On the key to the game) Turnovers were the thing. We had two and they did not have any. So it is tough when you turn the ball over against a great team like that. There is not much more you can take away from the game, a loss is a loss. Reggie Haywood, Defensive End (On how Tom Brady was patient and made his throws underneath the coverage) You have to give him credit, because that is just intelligent. If you look at the defense and you see Cover Two and we're doubling Randy Moss all the time, you have to take what we give you. Tom definitely did that but you have to give the wide receivers credit too, because they broke tackles and made yards after contact and just made some big plays and that really hurt us. (On the play of his quarterback David Garrard) Dave put us in a position to at least win.  A lot of people didn't expect us to put up that many points and Dave came out there and he made plays throwing the ball and with his feet. That first touchdown was a great play.  He was getting hit and he continued to see the open man and delivered the ball to him. The defen

On The Eve Of New Year's Eve Day 2007-2008--Perfect Patriots!
    2007-12-30 05:12:00
Good morning on this partly cloudy December 30th, 2007 (thanks, Laura!). We're in the last hours of the calender year, and it certainly has been a kind one for Boston Red Sox fans, Boston Celtics fans and, of course, the perfect 16-0 regular season New England Patriots, or as some liked to call them, the "Red Sox in helmets." That phrase WAS known as a "diss," but my, oh my, how things have changed! The Sox are the best team in all of baseball. BAR NONE. The Celtics have the best record in basketball. And the Patriots last night completed their perfect 2007-08 regular season at 16-0 with a comeback and thrilling 38-35 victory over the gung-ho New York Giants. Both teams played with all hands-on-board. They played for keeps, and the Pats were successful in making NFL history, although in more of a nail-biting fashion than I would have liked. Bottom line? THEY WON.The latest from Minnesota and the Johan Santana sweepstakes goes like this, from ESPN dot com. I'll be back with a comment

The Patriots Run the Regular Season Table
    2007-12-30 01:27:00
It was truly a night to remember as a large crowd turned out at Professor Thom's to see if the New England Patriots could indeed run the entire NFL regular season table and defeat the New York Giants. What they witnessed was simply one of the best nights in NFL history, and one of the best games of the 2007 season. And the champagne can now stay on ice in Miami. Uncorked. The Giants gave the Patriots one helluva game at the Meadowlands. All the worry and speculation over whether the Giants should rest their star players was all for nothing as they led for most of the contest, until the Pats came on charging in the fourth quarter to wrestle the game away from them, and make NFL history. (And yes, the game didn't end 23-7, so no worries now about doom being around the corner.)The 2007 New England Patriots may go down as the greatest team in NFL history. New England Patriots finish undefeated regular season 16-0!
    2007-12-29 22:18:00
The Patriots have done it and have become the first team in over thirty years to finish the regular NFL season undefeated. The Giants played a close game, even holding the lead for a good amount of time, but when the final whistle blew, it was New England who had come out on top. The Patriots capped off a record breaking 2007 regular season with a 38-35 nail biter of a win. Tom Brady and Randy Moss became proud owners of all time single season touchdown records for their respective positions. Brady bested Peyton Manning's mark of 49 passing touchdowns in a single season. Moss topped Jerry Rice's all time mark of 22 receiving touchdowns when he brought in a 60 yard bomb from Brady. The Patriots also set the single season team record for points scored. The Patriots finish the season an unparralled 16-0, but the real test comes in the playoffs where they will have to contest with tougher competition. New England could be challenged by the Chargers, Jaguars, or be faced with another classic showdown against the Colts before likely being matched up against the Cowboys or Packers in the Super Bowl. The 2007 Patriots have staked their claim as one of the greatest teams in football history, but none of that means anything to the Patriots or their fans if they don't bring home another Lombardi Trophy.

Would you like a shot at denying the Patriots a historic win?
    2007-12-04 10:43:57
On the heels of New England's 27-24 escape from Baltimore last night, the Patriots are now 12-0. Here's a question for you, Big Blue View Nation. At this point, are you hoping the Patriots are 15-0 with a shot at making history when they visit the Meadowlands in the final week of the season? Or, are you hoping someone -- like 9-3 Pittsburgh this week -- knocks off the Patriots first so they have nothing to play for in the final week? I know it would be nice to play New England with a chance at denying them a place in the history books, but for a lot of reasons I am rooting for the Steelers this week. First, the game might have meaning for the Giants in terms of making the playoffs or who and where they will play. Winning would be easier if the Patriots have nothing to play for. Second, if the Giants playoff fate is already decided I don't want to see them waste energy and emotion trying to knock off the unbeaten Pats, then wind up flat in an opening-round playoff game.

    "We're against everything. We're patriots"

Spiegel Online has a story today about the neo-Nazi National Unity Day march in Moscow at Kutosovsky Prospect yesterday. An estimated 2,000 people participated in the march and rally. The Spiegel article attempts to capture the stupidity and shallowness of the Russian neo-Nazi movement, and to explain the Kremlin and other government officials apparent tolerance of far-right nationalism, as contrasted with complete intolerance of the liberal left. This was the 3rd annual such march in Moscow. While last years march resulted in many arrests, this year Moscow police issued a march permit for a relatively low-traffic area of the city. The march included the cowboy hat wearing Preston Wiginton, a white supremacist from Texas. Wiginton spoke to the crowd, cheering "Glory to Russia," with the audience responding "white power" back to him in English.Hey, so there is something we Americans and Russians have in common. Racist bigots. Hurray."Russia for Russians!" the demonstrators shouted in unison, followed by slogans such as "For a Slavic, Russian nation!" or "Slavic, Russian, Powerful!" The demonstrators stretched out their arms in the Hitler salute between slogans. Their loud shouts of "Slavic Russia!" were followed by the sound of drum rolls."We are opposed to the immigration of Caucasians and Asians to Russia. Our people must remain pure. Russia belongs to us," 32-year-old Andrey Bukov explains. The trained media expert says he has been "serving" in the Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI) for four years. He waves its white, yellow and black flag, which features a symbol resembling a swastika.Nineteen-year-old Sergei carries the red flag of his group -- the "Slavic Union" -- tied around his shoulders. "We Russians are part of the white race," he says. This past Sunday the New England Patriots continued their unparalleled streak of dominating performances. The NFL is a league that is supposedly built upon the idea of parity, that on any given Sunday, any team can beat any other team. However, the 2007 New England Patriots certainly seem to be disproving this theory. The Redskins were supposed to present the first real challenge for the Patriots this year. Despite some struggles on the offensive side of the ball, the Redskins defense came into the Patriots game a top-ten defense. You wouldn't have thought that by watching the game on Sunday the way the Redskins played, or more precisely, just how phenomenally dominant the Patriots are on both sides of the ball. I'm not going to go too in depth on this, that's been covered ad nauseum all over the interwebs and televisions. The Patriots are on a record breaking pace (and have already broken several records), as are several individual players. And none of these players has been mo

Stay committed to the run. Sure, New England's only allowing 78 yards per game on the ground. But teams also aren't staying committed to the ground game. They do allow 4 yards per carry on the ground, so there is room to run. The Dolphins must, regardless of the score, stay committed to Ronnie in order to keep this game from getting potentially ugly. 2. Pressure, pressure, pressue. The Dolphins have got to apply pressure to Tom Brady and not allow him to have all day to throw. This is how the Dolphins caused Brady's poor play in the past. Do they have it in them this time around? If they want to have any chance in hell, they have must. 3. Get off the field on third down. Every week I say this, but it's never been as important as this week. History shows that these two teams must be able to hold their opponent on 3rd downs. In the last 17 meetings, 13 have been won by the team who converted a higher percentage of 3rd downs. Simple logic also says that the Dolphins must hold on 3rd downs. If you give the Pats fewer chances, you give yourself a better shot at pulling this one out. Prediction: I'll be rooting our Dolphins on and will be praying for them to pull this one off, but they will have to play perfect football to pull this off. Until I see them play good football, I can't predict them playing perfect football. So I'll say Pats win 34-20. GO DOLPHINS!!!! Your thoughts below...

Preview: Patriots Offense vs Dolphins Defense
    2007-10-20 08:53:09
New England Patriots (6-0) at Miami Dolphins (0-6) That this could get ugly in a hurry. The Patriots haven't scored fewer than 34 points in any game this year while the Dolphins average allowing over 30 points per game. If that doesn't spell disaster, I'm not sure what does. Throw in the fact that Miam's secondary is in sad shape and the pass rush has been non-existant, you got the makings of a potential embarrassment. However, could the Dolphins luck be turning? As it stands now, they may have avoided their first bullet as the Pats may be without their top 2 running backs. Laurence Maroney has been suffering from a groin injury and has been limited in practice all week. Some reports have said he's been ruled out while others say he is going to play. I don't know who to believe, but at this point, it seems unlikely he'd be out there. Their primary backup, Sammy Morris, will be out for a few weeks with a chest injury. What this means is that the Dolphins will be dealing with guys like Kevin Faulk, Heath Evans, and Kyle Eckel in the running game. Faulk, last week, had 47 yards on 12 carries and is certainly capable of being effective on Sunday. Evans, as Dolphin fans remember, is also a capable tailback. Remember back in 2005 at Dolphin Stadium, Evans ran for 84 yards on 17 carries in a 23-17 victory over Miami. The important thing to remember, though, is that any back can run behind this talented offensive line, especially when playing against the very poor Dolphins rush defense. So yes, the Dolphins luck out because they don't have to face Maroney (most likely), but they still will have to prove they can stop New England's ground game. So that brings us to Tom Brady and the passing game, which will likely be the reason this game gets out of hand. Historically, Brady has struggled against the Dolphins to the tune of a 74.2 QB rating. He's completed just 57% of his passes for just 5.7 yards per attempt with 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 12 games. But those were obviously different Dolphin defenses. This year's version has, basically, sucked. However, I stil ldo think there's one thing you can take out of the previous Dolphin/Patriot games. In those 12 games, Brady has been sacked 25 times. A majority of those sacks came in the games in which Brady played the worst. Coincidence? Of course not. This season, which happens to be the best start of Brady's career, Tom has been sacked just 6 times. Three of those sacks came last week, meaning in 5 previous games, Brady was sacked just 3 times. Clearly, that will be the main focus of this defense. The best way to slow down this passing attack will be to get after Brady. We saw last year in Miami how much Brady just hates being hurried or hit. So I say bring the heat all game long. As for the receivers, we are all well aware that they are a total mismatch for this secondary. Will Allen will simply not be able to cover Randy Moss. So here's my suggestion. You double cover Randy all game long with Allen and a safety over the top. Then you take the other safety from the opposite side of the field and you cheat him towards Randy. That way you have 3 guys paying attention to Moss, who is the most talented receiver to ever play the game (bar none). Then you take your chances with Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker. The Dolphins also luck out because tight end Ben Watson will not be playing on Sunday. So that means if you eliminate Moss from the offenses by double and triple covering him, then you really better your chances of slowing down this high-powered offense that does come in missing some key players. Now, you won't be able to stop this offense. But if the Dolphins can slow it down enough to remian in the game well into the 4th quarter, then anything can happen. So that's my idea. What do you guys think the Dolphins need to do to slow down New England's offense?

5 Good Questions: New England Patriots Edition
    2007-10-19 20:37:36
I recently got the opportunity to exchange 5 questions with tommassee of Pats Pulpit, SB Nation's fine New England Patriots blog. Below are his responses to my questions. And to see my responses to his questions, head on over to Pats Pulpit. I know it's old news, but I'll ask anyway because I didn't ask you earlier. What has been your take on the whole "spy-gate" incident? My take is this: There was a rule. Many teams were violating it in one way or another. The league sent a memo to every team warning them to cut it out. The Patriots were caught further violating the rule. The league severely punished them. That should be the end of it. There have been plenty of former coaches and players who admitted that all kinds of "bending" the rules happens all the time. People using this "cheating" to belittle the Patriots past accomplishments need to look at the 2007 Patriots who, under the direct scrutiny of the league, are destroying every team in their path. Other than that, it's just so much noise, people making excuses for why the Patriots have been so much better than the rest of the league for the last half-decade or so. I don't want to seem like a Patriot hater, but I'd love to hear how you feel about how the Pats have clearly been running up the score late in games this season. Does it bother you at all as a fan of the team? You'd have to provide an example. "Running up the score" is pretty vague. If you want to take the Dallas game, the Patriots had the ball on the Cowboys 20 yard line with 3:45 to go. They ran the ball seven straight times. Dallas called timeout eventually leaving New England with too much time to kill by kneeling. Ultimately, it was 4th-and-goal and New England had their fourth-string running back in the game. Why should they turn the ball over on downs? If Dallas didn't want New England to score, they should have (a) not taken that timeout, or (b) stopped Kyle Eckel. I mean, Kyle Eckel! The Patriots margin of victory isn't even a record, and I don't remember anyone complaining about the St. Louis Rams running up the score in 1999 (after a 27-10 season-opening victory, the Rams beat teams 35-7, 38-10, 42-20, 41-13, and 34-3). Every year you see Indianapolis score in the 40s, even 50s against any number of teams. In 2004 when Indy was on a singular mission to get Peyton Manning to break Dan Marino's single-season passing touchdown record, they were trouncing teams just so Manning could break a record. No one complains about that. And no one said anything about Dallas running it up before they played Buffalo. It's just so much whining and all any of these pathetic people can do to tear down a great team. What should the Patriots do? Start taking knees after halftime? So let's get right to the major issue. Do you think this team has what it takes to go undefeated? If so, do you think they will go undefeated? And in which game do you think they could get tripped up (other than the game at Indy)? Do they have what it takes? I'll defer to someone (among others) who knows more about and has seen much more football than I: Mike Ditka. When asked if he thought the Patriots could do it, he said stone-faced and emphatically, "Absolutely." Yes, I think they have what it takes. This team won three Super Bowls and went 14-2 twice with a roster that didn't approach the capabilities of this one. Whether they will go undefeated (I think it's unlikely) depends on so many factors, especially injuries. Every team New England plays is going to be giving the Patriots their best shot, and when teams have nothing to lose, they can play recklessly, and when they play recklessly, there's a better chance of injury. There's also weather, luck, and the plain fact that teams some times have bad games. Six games into the season, it's just too early to realistically consider an undefeated season. Which game could be the one to ruin it? Heck, this weekend. Doesn't much matter to me that Miami is 0-6. The Patriots rarely win down there. Then, of course, Indy, followed by Baltimore (on the road Dec. 3) and Pittsburgh (Dec. 9, short week after Monday at Ravens). And then, if the Patriots are fortunate enough to wrap up the No. 1 seed or some other goal the coaches require, the last couple games of the season (Dolphins and Giants) could be the one(s) if they are deemed "meaningless." If you were coaching a team, how would you gameplan on defense to stop this Patriots offense? What is the key to slowing this offense down? Unlike Wade Phillips who said his plan was to stop the running game and dare Tom Brady to beat them, I would jam the receivers at the line, much the same way New England jammed the Rams receivers in Super Bowl XXXVI. And, using the same strategy the Patriots employed in that game, I wouldn't rush extra pass rushers or blitz, maybe at all. Brady will find the open man. If you blitz, someone will be open. Brady has shown that he can get rid of the ball in a little more than 1 second. Jam the receivers. Make them not want to run routes. And hit the running back out of the backfield every chance you get. For six years that Brady has been quarterback, I have yet to see a team do what Belichick does. The game films are out there. Every team gets them. Watch what Belichick does to "confuse" other quarterbacks, and do that. Sunday against Dallas, the Patriots lined up with one down lineman, four linebackers and six defensive backs. Take away Tony Romo's end-of-half two-minute drill and he had less than 100 yards in the game, and he had been leading the league in passing through five weeks. Let's get to the predictions. Put your name on the line here: How does this game on Sunday play out (or should I say how badly does New England beat the Dolphins)? What will the Patriots' record be at the end of the season? And how far will they go in the playoffs? Man, you had to ask that, didn't you? At this point, I'm going to assume that both Laurence Maroney and Sammy Morris will be out, leaving New England with Kevin Faulk, Kyle Eckel and Heath Evans. That may leave the Patriots "one-dimensional," but it's a pretty good dimension. For whatever reason that Miami is giving up 30.5 points per game (31st), that one dimension should be enough. I also can't imagine Cleo Lemon having tremendous success against a Bill Belichick defense, especially his first experience against one. I'd expect a two-touchdown game. The odds are just too great against any team to go undefeated. I think New England will finish 13-3 or 14-2, barring significant injuries, especially to Tom Brady, Randy Moss or a group of others, which of course would change everything. A 14-2 record should deliver a first-round bye, and I would expect New England to reach the AFC Championship. I, of course, will be rooting for an undefeated season and a Super Bowl title, but, hey, it's Week 7.

Preview: Dolphins Offense vs Patriots Defense
    2007-10-19 07:02:19
New England Patriots (6-0) at Miami Dolphins (0-6) Ah, the divisional game. This is what makes football so great. Sure, the Dolphins are 0-6 and basically, for lack of a better word, suck right now. But these divisional matchups sure do get the juices flowing, don't they? The past two Sunday's, for me, where ho-hum. Even if they won, I knew they weren't going anywhere this year. But these divisional games mean something. And like I said earlier, this game in particular is one win I'd trade a season full of losses for in order to pick up. Of course, it sure as hell isn't going to be easy. Pay no attention to the fact that the Dolphins are 3-2 in the last 5 against New England or that since 2000, the Dolphins are 5-2 against the Pats in Miami. This is a different Dolphins team and certainly a different Patriots team. So those numbers I throw out the window. So how do the Dolphins go about attempting to pull off this monumental upset? There aren't many weaknesses in this 2nd ranked defense in the league, that's for sure. They are big up front and athletic behind them. But if you look long and hard, you'll see some holes. Like always, it's going to all start with Ronnie Brown. And don't think the Patriots don't know how well Brown has played. Bill Belichick said that Brown is the "best player I've seen this year offensively." Belichick also said, "I haven't seen anybody play any better than him this year." You know what they say. Bill knows his stuff so I won't argue with him here. What this means for the Dolphins is that running the ball might be hard to come by. However, this Patriots' rush defense isn't as good as they look on paper. Sure, in yards per game allowed, they rank 5th, allowing just 78 yards per game. But you have to consider that teams have ran the ball, on average, less than 20 times per game against them. New England's 4 yards allowed per carry average places them 17th in the NFL. So they can be run on if you stay with it. The key, to me, will be how well Samsom Satele does in his matchup with DT Vince Wilfork. Satele gives up about 25 pounds to Wilfork and is, undoubtedly, the best DT he's had to handle in his life. If Salete, who has played great, can hold his own, then Brown could find some decent running room. But if you ask me, I don't think Ronnie cracks the 100 yard rushing plateau this week. If I had to guess, I'd say 20-25 carries for 75-85 yards on the ground for Brown. But just because Brown might not have a big day on the ground doesn't mean he won't be a big factor in the game. In fact, he's going to be the biggest factor. First of all, I love the matchup of Brown out of the backfield against the New England linebackers. I think that's something Cam Cameron can exploit and I do think that Brown, once all is said and done, will continue to lead the NFL in yards from scrimmage by at least his current margin of 100. Secondly, and perhaps most important, is that Brown will have a significant effect on how successful the Miami passing gmae is outside of his direct involvement. Belichick's remarks really hint to me that the Pats are going to put a premium on stopping Ronnie Brown and forcing Cleo Lemon and this mostly inexperienced receiver group to beat them. This means that the play-action pass, which was successful often last week against Cleveland, will be there for a lot of the game as long as the offensive line can give Lemon time. Lemon showed he can make good reads off the play-action and the potential is there fore some game-breaking plays deep off of the play-action pass. But all this is contingent on the idea that Cameron will give the ball to Ronnie often no matter how effective the running game is. If there isn't much room on the ground early in the game, Cam has to stay committed to the running game. Getting away from the run and forcing Cleo to win the game is an easy for this game to get ugly quickly. So like I said, I think New England is going to key on stopping Brown on the ground, meaning the play-action pass could be there often. But what else will the Dolphins need to do through the air to win this game? Well, the New England secondary has played well, with Asante Samuel leading the way. What I'll be very curious about is how the Pats will matchup their corners against this Dolphins offense. One thing the Dolphins have going for them heading into this game is the "surprise of the unknown." What I mean by that is nobody knows how Derek Hagan and Ted Ginn will be used now that Chris Chambers is gone. I'd have to assume Samuel will be on Marty Booker, as he's likely to be Cleo's top target. But what will the Dolphins do in terms of lining up Ginn and Hagan? and how will the Pats counter? Will Ellis Hobbs cover, at just 5'9, be the one covering the 6'2 Hagan? If so, I like that matchup. Or will the slightly taller Randall Gay cover Hagan while Hobbs tries to keep up with Ted Ginn? I don't know and I don't think anyone knows. At this point, Cameron might not even know how he's going to use these 2 receivers alongside Marty Booker. There's one last thing I wanted to bring up. Considering the Dolphins have nothing to lose here, why not be very creative in this game? Why not pull out all the stops? How about the Dolphins use one of those sneak onside kicks at some point? Why not run a couple of gimmick plays on offense? We've seen the "Statue of Liberty" play ran and I'm sure they've practice more of these kinds of plays. Why not try them out? These kinds of plays can change the momentum of a game in a heartbeat as well as being the kinds of plays which spark a team that might be a bit frustrated and disheartened. Just an idea. What do you guys think? Your thoughts below...

Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots: Open Game Thread
    2007-09-23 14:31:59
07 at 38 FINAL SCORE Game Preview :: Pats Pulpit Update [2007-9-23 15:55:30 by Brian Galliford]: This one, thankfully, is over. Ineffective offense, poor time of possession and continued (more devastating) injuries give the Bills a poor outlook even after this weekend. It's going to be a long week; the Jets come to Orchard Park next weekend in a game that should be a little easier for this team... but not much. Update [2007-9-23 15:29:28 by Brian Galliford]: The Pats, still throwing despite a 24-point lead, strike again as Brady exploits a Greer-on-Moss matchup. Leave your final comments about the game and go enjoy the weather outdoors - I'm obligated to stay here; you, fortunately, are not. Update [2007-9-23 15:19:37 by Brian Galliford]: Start of the fourth quarter, and it's 31-7 Pats. One positive: John Wendling, in his first NFL action, makes a great play on a Moorman punt, pinning the Pats at their 2-yard line. Update [2007-9-23 15:12:23 by Brian Galliford]:

    Bills/Patriots: What to Watch For
    2007-09-22 19:12:35
at Buffalo Bills (0-2) at New England Patriots (2-0) September 23, 2007 @ Gillette Stadium 1:00 PM ET, CBS BUF: Injury Report :: NE: Injury Report The going gets tougher for the Buffalo Bills in Week 3 of the NFL regular season, as the winless team travels to New England to take on the unbeaten and vastly talented Patriots. After a tough two weeks for the Bills, finger-pointing has begun in the Bills' fan base, and anything less than a competitive showing Sunday will only further those tactics. Breaking Down the Patriots :: Pats Pulpit The Bills' last two games in Foxboro, however, have been surprisingly competitive visits for the Bills. In 2005, the Pats' 21-16 win came only after the Bills built up a 9-point lead; last season, the Bills held a 17-7 lead at halftime of the season opener, only to allow 12 second-half points and lose by two. Two losses by a combined seven points isn't bad considering the success disparity between the two clubs the past eight seasons. But

    Bills/Patriots: Pats Pulpit's Take
    2007-09-21 14:23:34
Pats Pulpit: SB Nation's New England Patriots blog Ever wondered what it would be like to be a Patriots fan? The thought disgusts me; the vision of cheering a Tom Brady touchdown throw gives me stomach pain the likes of appendicitis has never seen. But boy - I sure wouldn't mind the winning, even if it had recently been tarnished by a cheating scandal. Let's be honest - it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to be a Pats fan. A Dolphin fan, on the other hand... We don't have to imagine being a Pats fan today (you're welcome), because Tommasse of Pats Pulpit is here to give us his take on the Pats. It's like viewing the thoughts of a Pats fan without the appendicitis, or something. Here's his take on his team and the game this weekend (my questions in bold): I'll only bring this up once - Spygate. We know where you stand. Were you surprised at all with how well the Patriots played after the consequences were handed out, or was this just another aced

Breaking Down the New England Patriots
    2007-09-20 15:17:56
Pats' D has dominated Jets, Chargers (Courtesy: Boston Herald) Ask any NFL fan who the best team in the NFL is right now, and you'll get a split: 25% may answer the Colts, but the rest will say "New England". Signal-stealing scandal and all, the Patriots have quickly established themselves as the team to beat in the NFL with successive 38-14 thrashings of the Jets and Chargers. The offense is explosive, the defense is making big plays and the special teams have already delivered a record-breaking TD as well. In short, this team presents a formidable challenge to any foe - especially an extremely young and underdeveloped Bills team in Gillette Stadium. No NFL team is perfect, however, and the Pats aren't an exception - there are vulnerabilities here that the Bills absolutely have to try to exploit. Unless, of course, they'd rather just use this as a practice game to work out some of the kinks that have hindered them in the Broncos and Steelers contests. Her

Swift Justice, Severe Punishment For Patriots, Belichick
    2007-09-14 03:38:20
The verdict is in, and the punishment harsh for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots  In a statement -- see below -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell fined The Patriots 250K, Belichick himself $500K and docked the Pats a 1st Round pick, which would become a 2nd and 3rd round pick should the Pats not make the playoffs... Here is the statement from the League Office -- New England Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick has been fined the maximum amount under the NFL Constitution and By-Laws of $500,000 for violating league policy last Sunday on the use of equipment to videotape an opposing team's offensive or defensive signals, the NFL announced today. In addition, Commissioner Roger Goodell also notified the Patriots that they would forfeit their own first-round draft choice in 2008 if they reach the playoffs, or their own second-round and third-round picks if they do not qualify for the playoffs, and that the club would be fined $250,000. Dr. Z Chimes In On Patriots Scandal

In my opinion, Dr. Z is a very knowledgeable writer and usually puts together a good read. On SI.com, he recently put out an article about the Patriots scandal. - Last year the Lions played the Patriots in Foxboro. At one point their coach, Rod Marinelli, phoned up to the press box, “There’s a camera [...]

Time does have a way of eroding one’s memory. I know exactly where I was six years ago. I know that we huddled around a television after the first plane hit and that I saw the second plane coming as if in slow motion. I know that people were crying. And I know that [...]

    Vikings, Patriots Open With Victories
    2007-09-10 18:33:00
I watched the opening weekend of football at Professor Thom's yesterday, and there was a good crowd of fans taking in the games. I think many stayed away because the Jets-Patriots game was on national TV. (The bar gets many more Pats fans when they are not seen in NYC.)Unfortunately, I was late getting to the bar, and I couldn't see the Vikings-Falcons game, as there was a large variety of fans from different teams, such as Eagles, Redskins, Bills and even Titans fans. So I had to follow the game via updates from the other games on the TVs.It was a game the Vikings were supposed to win and did. The defense was the story for the Vikes, who had six sacks and returned two interceptions for TDs, courtesy of Kevin Williams and Antoine Winfield. It was also a fine debut for Adrian Peterson, who was thrust into fulltime duty when Chester Taylor injured his hip in the first half.Peterson rushed 19 times for 103 yards, and made a great catch out of the backfield and scampered 60 yards down th

Around the AFC East, Pt. III - New England Patriots
    2007-07-20 21:17:38
Pats Pulpit: SB Nation's New England Patriots blog It's Patriots time. The third and final installment of this Friday's tour Around the AFC East lands us in Foxboro, where we're going to discuss kickers. Yes, kickers. Buffalo Rumblings: How comfortable are you with kicker Stephen Gostkowski? How different was it watching a non-#4 kick the ball last year? Do you miss Adam Vinatieri at all? Tommasse, Pats Pulpit: "I'll tell you one thing: I'll be happy when New England gets a kicker with a last name like Smith. Vinatieri? Gostkowski? Sheesh. There's no telling how the "new kid" is going to be in one of those monumental pressure situations until he's in one. He had a very good year last year for a rookie, and he did make some moderate-pressure kicks, including a few in the playoffs. But you can't outright compare Gostkowski to Vinatieri yet. The kid (hey, I'm getting old) was a rookie last year, and you can't expect Snow Bowl-type kicks from him ou

Samuel And Patriots Fail To Reach Agreement
    2007-07-17 03:02:49
Reports out of Boston on Monday say that the New England Patriots and cornerback Asante Samuel never were even in the same zip code when it came down to the two sides coming together on a contract extension. Monday was the NFL deadline in negotiating a deal with a franchise player. If Samuel plays for New England in the 2007 season the most he can earn is $7.79 million which was the offer the team put on the table in order to make Samuel a “franchise” player. Last month Samuel said that he plans on holding out until the tenth week of the NFL season. Reports state that Samuel was looking for a deal that would have paid him about $10 million per season, it is believed that New England offered  about $6 million per season plus bonuses that could have added up to an additional $13 million. © Copyright thesackattack.com 2007

Around the AFC East, Pt. I - New England Patriots
    2007-07-13 15:32:28
Pats Pulpit: SB Nation's Patriots Blog It's Friday, Bills fans, which means that we're back with yet another rousing rendition of "Around the AFC East", where Bills fans can fill up their rant banks with the latest glowing endorsements of our most hated rivals. So drink up your Patriots fuel, as Tommasse from Pats Pulpit stops by to discuss the Patriots' wide receivers. Buffalo Rumblings: Your team obviously added a lot of players to the wide receiving corps this year; how does this effect the players that were on the team last season ( i.e. Jabar Gaffney, Reche Caldwell, etc.). How do you see the final depth chart shaking out at wideout? Tommasse, Pats Pulpit: "With the re-signing of 'Mr. Patriot' Troy Brown on Tuesday, the Patriots have 13 wide receivers unofficially on the roster. In alphabetical order, they are (1) Brown, (2) Reche Caldwell, (3) Bam Childress, (4) Chris Dunlap, (5) Jabar Gaffney, (6) Chad Jackson, (7) C.J. Jones, (8) Kelvin Kight, (

    Patriots Adjusts Harrison’s Contract
    2007-07-06 16:11:08
The Providence Journal reports that thirteen-year veteran strong safety Rodney Harrison, who is still regarded as the heart of the New England secondary but a defender whose productivity has diminished the last two seasons because of injuries, has restructured his contract.  In the reworked contract, first reported by the Boston Globe and then confirmed through NFL sources and league salary documents, Harrison reduced his base salary for 2007 from a scheduled $2.7 million to $2 million.  The adjustment cuts Harrison’s 2007 salary cap charge by $700,000, to $2.7 million. Since the Patriots still have roughly about $8.4 million in available salary cap funds, and more than sufficient money to sign their draft choices, the restructuring was not necessary to carve out more spending room.  Instead, the move should be considered a reflection that Harrison is in the twilight of a celebrated career.  He has appeared in 168 games and has 1,113 tackles, 32 interceptions, 73 passes defens

Around the AFC East, Pt. II - New England Patriots
    2007-07-06 13:42:15
Pats Pulpit: SB Nation's New England Patriots blog Welcome back to yet another installment of "Around the AFC East". Each week, the four AFC East bloggers from SB Nation get together and interrogate each other about their respective teams (I use the word "interrogate" on purpose - generally, interrogations aren't friendly, and neither are the rivalries between these teams). Next up: Tommasse from Pats Pulpit. BR: What's your take on the off-season madness surrounding Tom Brady? From Yankees caps to multiple babies, it's been a circus for that guy. Do you think it will be a distraction for the team at all? Pats Pulpit: "I believe it's a massive Indianapolis Conspiracy! Anything to get the upper hand! But back to reality. I don't think it's a distraction to the people who count, they being the players and the coaches. The media can play their little games and have their fun, but I don't see it impacting how this team prepares or what happens on game

Around the AFC East: New England Patriots
    2007-07-06 07:29:13
It's Friday, which again means it's time to go "Around the AFC East" to discuss topics involving our hated division rivals. First up is tommasse from Pats Pulpit: Phinsider: With the current hold-out risk of Asante Samuel and with Rodney Harrison and Eugene Wilson both coming off of injury-plagued seasons, are you worried at all about this team's secondary? What kind of depth do the Pats have and are there any "sleepers" that outsiders should keep an eye on? Pats Pulpit: If Samuel sits out, yes, I'm worried. Even if he's on the field for Week 1, I'm still a little concerned. The secondary hasn't been the most stellar unit on the team the last couple years. Harrison has suffered a couple very nasty injuries. Nasty as they've been, that tough SOB keeps coming back. That's the good news. The bad news is we're all waiting for that next cheap block at the knees -- and not just on Harrison. The Patriots secondary has been decimated by injuries for what seems like
