| | Best of MP: Doctor Pepper Proves Book Larnin' is No Substitute for Common Sense | | 2008-05-27 14:33:02 | | I've been thinking about doing this for a while, and since I've got a lot of new readers, I figure this is probably a good time. Every other Tuesday until you get sick of it, I'm going to do a "best of the Mattress Police" post. You'll recognize some of them from my book (What? You haven't bought my book? What the hell are you waiting for? Buy it! All the proceeds go to helping a poor ditch digging kid buy an iPod!), but I'm going to throw some surprises in as well. Today's post comes to us from way back in February of aught seven. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed copying and pasting it for you. Dr Pepper Proves Book Larnin' is No Substitute for Common Sense As you know, Dr Pepper is my muse. I therefore took it particularly hard when the marketing wizards at the Dr Pepper company turned out to be no more wizards than, well, than Dr Pepper is a real doctor. I love ginger and cardamom. And maple butter is one of those taste memories from childhood- my grade school would have waffle days, and they would serve these waffles made from scratch, big pale yellow round ones the size of a plate. The waffles were barely browned - so that they were soft and warm and not crusty on the outside. And on the top they would serve a scoop of fluffy maple butter, so when you spread it onto the waffle, the maple butter would sink into the individual spaces in the grid, exploding into your mouth at each bite....yumm! I have never forgot that taste. To Make Hot Pepper Gingerbread Muffins:Preheat oven to 350°F , use the center rack. | | How to Fire Roast a Pepper | | 2008-04-14 19:45:00 | | Whenever friends ask me how I roast a pepper, it seems like they think it will be uber complicated. Well, good news, it's not! It's super easy and you do get something absolutely delicious and very healthy. There are different ways to roast a pepper but I like fire roasting, because it requires no pans, just your stove (if you have an electric, you're screwed) and tongs, and of course peppers. You can roast all different kinds (the same way) but my demo is with red bell peppers and when you're roasting these, choose nice thick, fat ones.Just turn your flame on high and throw them on. My flame is on but it doesn't show in the picture (someone scientific, tell me why). They will start to blister and blacken. Turn them so that the non-blackened part is closer to the flame.Continue rotating the peppers until the entire pepper is black. When they're done, turn off your flame, and throw them into a paper bag. Close the bag and let the peppers steam for 15 minutes. The skin will then come off e | | By: FoodMayhem | | |

| | Roasted Cauliflower and Bell Pepper Soup | | 2008-01-04 01:02:50 | | I think the major reason people flock to the western coasts of California is the beautiful weather that we are blessed with. But looks like mother nature is playing games with this blessing that we have started taking for granted. It's been record lows this winter, and we have to turn on the heater every night! Well, not that I should complain a lot though, because a lot of my friends in the east coast have a way more hard time shovelling their driveways and uncovering their snow-clad cars in the morning, layered themselves in jerseys and overcoats. Anyways, one of the ways I think we can comfort ourselves against the cold is fuel our bodies with something hot, healthy and delicious. Yes, you guessed it right - Soups! Generally when we think about making soups, we go with chosen favorites like tomatoes, pumpkins, mushrooms, chicken or veggies in a creamy broth. But recently I came across a cauliflower soup recipe on Southern Living, and it caught my eye. I had also seen a tomato-bell-pepper soup on Coffee's blog, so I decided to combine the two and make this simple yet rich, healthy and totally comforting Roasted Cauliflower and bell pepper Soup!! The best part is right from the time you start roasting the peppers in the oven, your kitchen is filled with a fragrant and soothing aroma. Combine that with cauliflower cooking in sauteed garlic and you have a winner:)Ingredients6 large red bell peppers1 tbspn olive oil2-3 cloves of garlic - minced2 tspn salt (adjust to taste)1/4 tspn cayenne or red chilli powder1 medium-sized cauliflower - cut into florets1 tbspn sugar1 tbsp lemon juice (adjust to taste)freshly ground pepperfresh chives - chopped, for garnish1 tspn cream - for garnishMethodTurn on the oven with the broiler set to high. Arrange bell peppers skin side up on baking sheet. Broil, watching carefully, until skins are blackened, about 10 minutes. Remove peppers from oven and let them cool. Add the basil, the honey, half a teaspoon of groun paprika powder, pepper and salt. Pour 1 dl water on it and add the olive oil. Bring to boiling and let then simmer (on low heat) for about 1 hour. Stir from time to time.Mix the minced meat zith the ricotta, the egg, the chopped spinach and the parmesan. Season to taste. Roll balls of medium size (see picture).Blend the paprika/tomato sauce. Bring back to boiling point and add the meatballs. Let cook for another 10-15 linutes on medium to low heat (it should not sputter).Cook the pappardelle pasta al dente in salt water with a bit of olive oil. Drain.Either mix pasta with all of the sauce or drape pasta on plates and cover with sauce/meatballs.MY COMMENTS:This was a very yummie pasta dish - mainly because of the freshly made sauce and the unusual meatballs. I found I had too much pasta and was glad I had first draped the pasta on the plate and poured the sauce over it instead of mixing the two entirely. You can of course make smaller meatballs which prevents you from having to cut them into edible pieces. | | By: Send me a recipe | | |

Who came to the rescue in this scenerio, my dear readers? It was the less than lethal weapon, the pepper spray, we plainly see!!! We also plainly see just how easy it is for a gun to be taken away from a person carrying it, thus giving the perpetrator the upper hand to inflict the harm they wish to cause. So which would be a better choice for personal safety in society, the lethal weapon or the pepper spray? I vote for the pepper spray. READ ABOUT THIS HERE Practice non-violence in your lives. | | Happy 40th, Sgt. Pepper | | 2007-06-01 18:10:00 | | It was 40 years ago today that the most influential, and in my opinion, the greatest rock album ever recorded was released to the world: "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."It seems unbelievable that four decades have now passed since the Beatles literally wiped clean and redrew the face of pop music with a classic album that did not have one single on it at all. (Back in the mid-1960s, bands lived and died on the sales of singles, and albums were almost an afterthought to pop groups.)Sgt. Pepper was the Beatles answer to the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album of 1966, which featured the great hit single, "Good Vibrations." The album featured the first lyrics ever printed on an album cover, which would become commonplace afterwards. It featured songs with sound effects, songs with some obvious drug references ("Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" for instance), and the 42-second final chord that ends "A Day In The Life." It is without doubt the most innovative album in history. The album sh | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |
| | “Sgt. Pepper’s” faz 40 anos | | 2007-06-01 17:08:07 | |

| | Memories Of The IMPOSSIBLE DREAM Season. The 1967 Boston Red Sox-Part Two.........Sgt. Pepper And His Band, 60 Years After He Taught Them How To Play! | | 2007-06-01 12:22:00 | | It's Friday, and that means more 1967 memories of that special season.....1967, courtesy of my friend, Jay T. Here is his second installment of 1967 magic. You can acess part one by going back in the archives to May 25th. Thank you Jay, and I'll be back with a quick word afterwards. Take it away, Jay!***********************************************************************As I said earlier, before 1967 I had no "favorite team". All any kid had was Mickey Mantle and the Yankees, and I wanted desperately to be different and HATE the Yankees. I did not want to like a team that won all the time. (To this day I hate the Celtics, the Montreal Canadiens and the Green Bay Packers, all of whom dominated their respective sports back in the 60's). It isn't like I went looking for a team.......I just knew I didn't like the Yankees. So as that famous season unfolded it really was the last thing I expected.

| | RED WINE-POACHED BEEF WITH STAR ANISE, LONG PEPPER & CARDAMOM INFUSION | | 2007-04-07 15:23:00 | | When I first laid eyes on Ludo Levebvre’s cookbook Crave: The Feast of the Five Senses I didn’t know what to make of it. I would go into detail about the hilarious photographs (which I’m sure were not the intention and thus making it all the more sad because of it) but I have seen enough entries online treading that path, and a joke told too many times ceases to be funny (The Aristocrats aside). I think it best to present this link to SoCalorie’s An Open Letter to Ludo Lefebvre, from the May, 2005 entry from la.foodblogging.com, and leave it there. Aside from the pretty pictures, what kept me looking through this cookbook were the recipes, flavours different from what I was used to, but recognizable all the same. They looked really good, I mean, look at the guy’s creds, Lefebvre’s worked under some amazing people in some impressive places. He obviously knows what he’s doing—in the recipes, if not branding. The book was filled with spices that weren’t (yet) in my pantry (or my vocabulary), things like Chinese star anise which is the seed from the Badian tree, a small evergreen related to the magnolia. The seed contains anethole, the same ingredient which gives the unrelated anise its flavor. In China these beautiful little things are called bājiǎo, “eight-horn”. Lefebvre also calls for Indian long pepper which I’ve yet to track down but he describes the flavour as sharp, bitter and slightly sweet with a “light floral aroma”. Similar to regular pepper only hotter. Interestingly enough, the word pepper is derived from the Sanskrit word for long pepper, pippali. I decided to try the one recipe I read over and over again, like a fine poem, his red wine poached beef recipe, a refinement of bœuf à la bourguignonne. Without the searing step and sliced very thin he claimed the meat would be "soft as butter." Over the week I slipped out during lunch breaks and evenings to Whole Foods, the LCBO (known as the liquor store to those outside of On | | By: Diary of a Feeder | | |
