Face perception enhanced by direct gaze
    2008-08-13 09:30:52
Gaze direction is significant for the processing of visual information from the human face. Researchers in an Academy of Finland funded research project have discovered that the visual system of the brain processes another person's face more efficiently when the person's gaze is straight ahead than when the gaze is averted. read more

    Sound speeds up visual perception
    2008-08-12 09:14:41
The traditional view of individual brain areas involved in perception of different sensory stimuli--i.e., one brain region involved in hearing and another involved in seeing--has been thrown into doubt in recent years. A new study published in the online open access journal BMC Neuroscience, shows that, in monkeys, the region involved in hearing can directly improve perception in the visual region, without the involvement of other structures to integrate the senses. read more

    Hazard perception test
    2008-08-04 02:29:00
Hazard perception test forms a second section of the theory test and must be passed at the same time. Integrating theoretical hazard perception test training into the practical training sessions will ensure that as competence is achieved in each of the necessary skills, they can be strengthened and applied while you are on the road to increase the road safety benefits. This part of the theory test requires you to view 14 hazard video clips on the computer screen of approximately one minute each. You are required to watch these clips as if you were the driver. There will be 15 hazard to find - at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazard. The hazard perception test clips will not contain any sound. The clips feature various types of hazard, such as vehicles, pedestrians and road conditions. You should respond by pressing a mouse button as soon as you see a hazard developing that may result in the driver having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction. Th

Our 'mind's eye' directly impacts visual perception
    2008-07-01 20:57:24
Letting your imagination run away with you may actually influence how you see the world. New research from Vanderbilt University has found that mental imagery -- what we see with the "mind's eye" -- directly impacts our visual perception. read more

What is Reverence? | flowering of holy perception to life
    2008-05-22 11:49:59
1.Reverence is the floweringof a surrendered heartand love its fragrance.Reverence, is a love affairwith existence, with life, with beauty, the all-pervading Mystery.Reverence is the presenceof awakened living.- Reverend Cailean Benjamin2.Reverence is engaging in a form and depth of contact with Life that is well beyond the shell of form and into essence. Reverence is contact with the essence of each thing and person ... It is contact with the interior of its beingness.Even if you cannot sense the interior, it is enough to know that the form, the shell, is merely an outer layer, and that underneath it the true power and essence of who a person is, or what a thing is, is present. That is what honored in reverence.Reverence is an attitude of honoring life.Whether a person is reverent depends essentially upon whether he or she accepts the principle of the sacredness of Life, any way that he or she defines sacred. Reverence is also simply the experience of accepting that all Life is, in and o

It's all about the Perception isn't it?
    2008-02-07 08:43:00
Well, a twofer! I trotted over to Agitprop this morning, and he takes first place again. What I want to know, is damn Agitproppie, how do you really feel? You should not keep it all bottled up inside buddy, it can cause your brain to explode. Enjoy the rant. This is like the third article in three days about waste dumping in the Pacific. This is so disgusting it hardly requires comment. Afternet has an eye-opening report. If that one isn't enough, consider this offering again from Afternet. This comes on the heels of Bush's new budget which as we would assume, gives little to environmental issues. One of the things we learn as political junkie bloggers is that the media, even more so than we had thought, really does pick and choose what to report on, ending up favoring or disfavoring particular candidates. The American Street weighs in on the subject. I do tend to agree that a lot of it is a response to the far Right's allegation of liberality, but I too find it no excuse. As one who has

Paper: Distortions of subjective time perception within and across senses
    2008-01-18 12:02:20
In this new paper, researchers Virginie van Wassenhove, Dean V. Buonomano, Shinsuke Shimojo, and Ladan Shams note that the ability to estimate the passage of time is of fundamental importance for perceptual and cognitive processes. One experience of time is the perception of duration, which is not isomorphic to physical duration and can be distorted by a number of factors. Yet, the critical features generating these perceptual shifts in subjective duration are not understood. read more

There Is No Good And Evil Except In Perception
    2007-09-11 06:09:48
Good and evil does not exist. At a fundamental level, there is really no good and evil in the universe. Everything just is. It is perception that frames reality. Good and evil is based on perception. Therefore the perception of good and evil depends on the one perceiving it. If you perceive something as good, [...]

    Nature of Happiness and Perception
    2007-08-24 15:27:43
nature of happiness | If a man thinks that his happiness is due to external causes and his possessions, it is reasonable to conclude that his happiness must increase with the increase of possessions and diminish in proportion to their diminution. Therefore if he is devoid of possessions, his happiness should be nil. What is the real experience of man? Does it conform to this view? In deep sleep the man is devoid of possessions, including his own body. Instead of being unhappy he is quite happy. Everyone desires to sleep soundly. The conclusion is that happiness is inherent in man and is not due to external causes. One must realise his Self in order to open the store of unalloyed happiness.nature of perception | Whatever state one is in, the perceptions partake of that state. The explanation is that in the waking state (jagrat) the gross body perceives gross names and forms; in swapna (the dream state) the mental body perceives the mental creations in their manifold forms and names; in t

    The perception of the madman
    2007-08-16 08:48:00
From Idries Shah's, "The Way of The Sufi"There was a certain madman who would not take part in congregational prayers. One friday, after much difficulty, people induced him to attend. But as soon as the leader of the prayer started to recite, the madman started to bellow like an ox.The people assuming that he was only reverting to madness, but at the same time desirous of helping him, challanged him afterwards:'Have you no idea of God, that you should make a noise like an animal in the middle of a believing congregation?'But the madman said:'I was only doing what the prayer-leader was doing. When he intoned, he was buying an ox, and I spoke like an ox!'When this strange remark was reported to the leader of the prayer, he confessed:'When I was saying GOD IS GREATEST OF ALL, I was in fact thinking about my form. And when I got to the phrase PRAISE TO GOD, I thought that I could buy an ox. It was at that moment that I heard something bellowing'Read related post

    Is Customer Perception Reality?
    2007-08-07 17:26:00
Customer Perception is truth. Maybe the customer has never experienced (nor anyone else) a situation but they believe it to be true anyway (Faith). Is it not the same as believing there must be additional species of fish yet to be found/discovered? I perceive this to be true even though I or no one else has seen the species as of yet. I perceive the Universe to be expanding based on the works of people much more smarter than me. But how far will it expand? If it is true all stars are pulling away from our Sun at a speed relative to the distance it is from our Sun does that not mean eventually they will all meet at a certain starting point? Do they collide because they get into each other’s way? Or do their starting points for this to be true predetermine it?I perceive this to be true because if I started to walk away from the home I live in and go due West or East or North or South would I not eventually come back to my starting point? Taking it a step further if my neighbor did the

The Philippines Society's Negative Perception Of Call Center Work
    2007-07-13 11:46:00
Look at the picture. What do you see? It looks like a bunch of Filipina callcenter agents either bored or stressed out! Sadly, this is the picture majority of our society perceive our work to be. Dead-end and not a career. This is the reason why callcenter have a hard time finding qualified people themselves. The reason behind the negative perception is ignorance. Most people don't know what type of work we do and our personal sacrifice to provide for our needs and for our families. But we can't really blame them. Our industry has not done enough to enlighten more students and professionals in this matter. Even amongst ourselves, we haven't done enough to convey that what we do is an honest living and a worthwhile job.The only thing that most of us convey we are proud of is how much money we get. And that's a fact. How many times have you told non callcenter people the good things you do in a callcenter? Maybe once or maybe none. But how many times have you encouraged people to join

Change In Drivers' Perception = Change In Market
    2007-02-02 01:11:27
Indeed, those companies in the market very much rely on what the market or the consumers are clamoring for. In fact, if the consumers say that they are now looking for diesel programmers, then it is very likely that companies are going to create such products for the market.

Color blindness and contrast perception in cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) determined by a visual sensorimotor assay
    2006-08-15 15:52:16
Full paper at above linkAbstract:We tested color perception based upon a robust behavioral response in which cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) respond to visual stimuli (a black and white checkerboard) with a quantifiable, neurally controlled motor response (a body pattern). In the first experiment, we created 16 checkerboard substrates in which 16 grey shades (from white to black) were paired with one green shade (matched to the maximum absorption wavelength of S. officinalis' sole visual pigment, 492 nm), assuming that one of the grey shades would give a similar achromatic signal to the tested green. In the second experiment, we created a checkerboard using one blue and one yellow shade whose intensities were matched to the cuttlefish's visual system. In both assays it was tested whether cuttlefish would show disruptive coloration on these checkerboards, indicating their ability to distinguish checkers based solely on wavelength (i.e., color). Here, we show clearly that cuttlefish must be color blind, as they showed non-disruptive coloration on the checkerboards whose color intensities were matched to the Sepia visual system, suggesting that the substrates appeared to their eyes as uniform backgrounds.Furthermore, we show that cuttlefish are able to perceive objects in their background that differ in contrast by approximately 15%. This study adds support to previous reports that S. officinalis is color blind, yet the question of how cuttlefish achieve "color-blind camouflage" in chromatically rich environments still remains.
