Philadelphia using 3D illusions of speed bumps to slow traffic
    2008-06-19 09:14:00
When is a speed bump not a speed bump? When it's a faux traffic calming device merely painted on the road. Philadelphia is trotting out "Drive CarePhilly," a program that simultaneously gets a raspberry for its name and its execution. The aim of the effort is to slow down speeding drivers, and one technique involves a tromp l'oeil ruse to make drivers go "What the heck is that?" and slow down. Philadelphia's traffic manager Charles Denny apparently thinks the plastic material laid down at some intersections looks like a hump in the roadway; whatever you say, chief. While not convincing as a speed bump, the appliques definitely catch attention, and might work briefly until drivers on their regular route get wise. Our low opinion of this boondoggle is shared by sharp-witted Fark commenters, who offer alternate scenarios on this program's success. It's good that they're trying something, though, even if we've added heat instead of light to the discussion.[Source KYW 1060]

Jon Lester Leads The Red Sox To Victory...Boston 3 Philadelphia 0
    2008-06-18 04:52:00
Jon Lester was unbelievable in Philadelphia last night, going seven dominating innings, allowing zero runs and giving up only six hits while striking out five, including Monday night's hitting hero Ryan Howard four times. Wow!! Lester has not allowed more than three earned runs in 10 straight starts. He has made us literally forget about Johan Santana. Hideki Okajima pitched a clean eighth and Jonathon Papelbon struck out the side in a 14 pitch ninth to make it official. It was his 20th save. Lester had this to say after the game..."I tried to keep them off-balance as best I could," Lester said. "It's a good fastball-hitting team with all that pop. I just tried to mix the ball up and down, in and out and I was fortunate to do that. Our main objective early on was to establish something soft, something not in their bat path and we did that with some curveballs early to Howard. We got them off the fastball a little bit." Peter here. Way to go, Jon. It seems your confidence is growing by

    The Philadelphia Spurs, Year-End Version
    2008-05-08 18:34:11
About 20 games into the season, it looked as though the Sixers were headed for a high lottery pick and the only thing to look forward to was the off-season. It was at this point that I wrote an analysis of the team and how they could build towards being a championship contender. Here is an excerpt so you know how I did my analysis. Everyone in the NBA is good, that’s why they are in the NBA, and there are 40-50 players not in the NBA that could thrive if put in the right situation. As a result, it’s hard to evaluate non-superstar players on an individual basis. The best way to do this, in my opinion, is to see if you could picture them being a productive member of a championship caliber team – in this year’s case, the San Antonio Spurs. Let’s look at where the current Sixers players would fit on a team like this… Even though it might make more sense to use the Hornets, Lakers or Celtics as an example here, I'm going to stick with the Spurs, as they have still won 3 champio

2008 Philadelphia International Auto Show Coverage
    2008-04-30 10:28:00
Black Tie Gala, Food, Booze, The New Audi A4 and Miss AmericaAfter a very long week in the office, I was looking forward to a relaxing Friday night with my girlfriend. I had been talking to a few of my co-workers and one of them mentioned they were going to the Philadelphia Auto Show's Black Tie Gala event that evening. Having lived in the area for the last couple of years, it was something I always wanted to do.The reason I hadn't gone in the past is because the price tag for the event was rather steep - $200 for the evening. Seemingly every year the price had gone up, and for whatever reason I just dealt with general admission to the venue. Over the past few years I'd grown weary of car shows being mobbed by people to the point where you really couldn't get a good look at anything for more than a few seconds, as people would shuffle you out of the way for their 10 second chance to glimpse an exotic auto.Taking a picture was impossible as well, because even if you had enough space to

Toy Guns Being Declared Evil In Philadelphia

In the never ending assault on the Second Amendment rights of Americans, the Leftinstra has extended their battle now to, TOY guns. Yes, you read that correctly. TOY guns are up on the debate block of being banned in Philadelphia. Why? Because "Some of these guns look really, really real," as City Councilwoman Donna Miller exclaimed.Yeah, whatever Donna. In truth, Miller is just a bit miffed that a judge has put a temporary hold on a batch of gun laws that had just been enacted in the city, pending a full hearing on April 28th. Apparently the saying is true; Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.Truth be told, Miller is just worried that the Supreme Court will decide in favor of upholding the recent decision in the Washington, D.C. "gun ban" case. So now she is concerned that children playing with them as toys may become comfortable with what seems like the real thing. "We don't want them to get used to the idea of using a weapon," as Miller put it.Heavens no! We would NEVER want our c

    Philadelphia's real estate market improving
    2008-03-10 04:04:00
The local real estate market is starting to loosen a bit. Showings in some neighborhoods are up substantially this year, agents report, after being down almost 50 percent between August and the end of 2007.Driving the upsurge in traffic, at least in part, are prospective first-time homeowners, who - in the first true buyers' market of the 21st century - don't have to worry about selling a house."On Monday, we received a two-page list of showings," said Kathy Conway, an agent with Prudential Fox & Roach in Center City. "Every day there are 20, compared with the normal of five to seven."Because so many properties are just sitting, sellers are more willing to deal, said Tim Raybould, 26, of Lansdale, who works for an accounting firm. He and his wife, Jen, 26, a teacher, have been house-hunting in Montgomery County since December.

    Romantic Philadelphia
    2008-02-10 11:31:00
I met my husband in Philadelphia and associate that city in particular with some of the most romantic times of my life. Even when we lived in suburbs, we loved to book a room at the Ritz Carlton and drive in for a long weekend as tourists. Two of the most romantic things a couple can do in Philadelphia are a carriage horse & buggy tour and a cruise on the Spirit of Philadelphia. Now Trusted Tours & Attractions makes it easy to find vacation ideas and things to do in Philadelphia, at great prices with on line booking and confirmation. Instead of haggling with buggy drivers just reserve your hour long buggy ride on line for a lovely evening excursion. My husband and I always loved this, especially on an anniversary.Ticket on The Spirit of Philadelphia go quickly, so you cannot wait until your arrival to book this. Again, you can book lunch or dinner on line. I suggest dinner, as there is nothing more romantic than seeing the gorgeous skyline while drinking champagne on a luxury cr

Buffalo Bills at Philadelphia Eagles: Open Game Thread
    2007-12-30 07:34:35
09 at 17 FINAL SCORE Update [2007-12-30 16:4:16 by Brian Galliford]: That's all she wrote on the 2007 season for the Buffalo Bills, and just like '06, it ends with a record of 7-9. It's another disappointing finish, but there are a lot of positives to take away from this season. We'll have much more on this game, and the 2007 season as a whole, tonight and in the coming days. Update [2007-12-30 15:56:48 by Brian Galliford]: We've hit the 2-minute warning, and the Eagles have just completed a 41-yard pass that will all but ice this one for an Eagles win. Stand by - two minutes remain on Buffalo's 2007 season. Update [2007-12-30 15:16:5 by Brian Galliford]: A second turnover by Donovan McNabb - this time, a fumbled snap recovered by John DiGiorgio - has the Bills in scoring position at the outset of the fourth quarter. Come on, offense - we need touchdowns. Touchdowns are a good thing. Update [2007-12-30 15:11:13 by Brian Galliford]: The Bills strike back qu

    A Philadelphia Tradition
    2007-12-23 23:00:00
The Light Show at Christmas Time!OK, I know we were going to take a break from blogging until Christmas Day was over but, we decided to slip this one in just before the holiday...Today, my Mommy and Grammy took me on a trip downtown to see something called "The Light Show". But first, we stopped at a place called the "Reading Terminal Market" and had some lunch at a place called Delilah's.After we ate, we went to a really big place called a "department store" and the name of it was Macy's. When we went inside, I saw lots of people with little kids just like me. I guess they were all there to see The Light Show too. We came across a couple of nice spots to take some pics...a sleigh-in-the-snow display and the Macy's Christmas tree. After we wandered around the store a bit, we took an elevator ride to the second floor (Mommy let me push the button). When we got off, we looked around for a really good spot to see The Light Show and found one. While we waited for the show to begin, everyone was singing Christmas songs and clapping their hands. Finally, it was time for the show to start. I heard a loud voice coming from somewhere and telling Christmas stories about the lights. At the end of the show, all of the lights for all of the stories lit up and the whole wall was covered in lights! When it was over, Mommy told me that Grammy always took her to see The Light Show at Christmas time when she was a little girl and how much she liked it. Then, Grammy told me that her Mommy always took her to see it when she was a little girl and how much she liked it. Now, wait just a minute... how old is this Light Show anyway? Oh well, I'm glad they took me to see it...I really liked it too!And now, for all of my family and friends who don't live in Philly, you can watch The Light Show right here, right now. Just click the play button...Enjoy!

Philadelphia - city of brotherly love?? HA HA
    2007-11-22 17:55:22
Here it is, Thanksgiving, and I know that Harry and Nancy are so sad that the servicemen and servicewomen couldn’t be home with their families. They tried to ensure this by having them leave the Iraqis to their own devices - would allow that country to be demolished by civil strife and terrorism. [...]

The Philadelphia Daily News Has Company
    2007-11-15 11:51:10
George Vecsey of The New York Times wants to get in on the "A-Rod doesn't improve his teams" act:Rodriguez had a monster season, but the Yankees could not get out of the first round of the playoffs, yet again. He is an enigmatic figure in their clubhouse, clearly not a player who improves his team. This is the Yankees’ big chance to take whatever money they had penciled in for him and spend it on pitching and power and first base and a reasonable approximation of Scott Brosius at third base. Alex Rodriguez let his agent opt out for him, right during the World Series. Now the Yankees should opt out on him.In 4 seasons with the Yankees, A-Rod has made 4 All-Star appearances, won 2 MVP awards, and contributed 43.4 WARP-3. Clearly not a player who has improved the team, especially when one factors in his "enigmatic clubhouse presence" (it's worth mentioning that Buster Olney today asserted that A-Rod "plays hard, prepares diligently, [and] is a much better teammate than anyone realizes").Why spend money on the game's best player when one can blow the same load on pitching studs like Carlos Silva and Kyle Lohse, or 1B sluggers such as Sean Casey and Tony Clark? Especially when he can't even get you out of the first round, unlike St. Brosius, who ensured four first-round victories for his Yankee teams by putting up a monster .167/.196/.259 career ALDS line.

Tax Enforcing Mayor of Philadelphia Owes Back Taxes
    2007-09-24 07:00:00
Some stories just write themselves. Here's one courtesy of the Philadelphia Daily News:PHILADELPHIA NEEDS every dime it can get to pay for services like policing our streets and teaching our students.Mayor Street knows that. That's why the city recently cracked down on delinquent taxpayers. What Street didn't know was that he hadn't paid the property taxes on two of the four properties he owns in North Philadelphia. That is, until the Daily News delivered the bill last week.I'm happy to say Street moved swiftly after a three-year delay, delivering a check last Thursday to the city for $4,798.99.Street held a news conference three weeks ago to announce the crackdown on overdue property and business taxes owed to the city. The city then started sending out notices to 23,000 property owners, demanding payment for $394 million in back taxes. Another $294 million is owed to the city in back business taxes. The city, Street estimated, should be able to collect about 34 percent of those back tax

I have confirmed through a couple sources that the Jets will wear the throwback Titans uniforms October 14th at home vs. the Philadelphia Eagles. It can’t hurt to wear the Titans uniforms, the Jets haven’t beaten the Eagles with Jets ones on.

SIGNO SOBRE SIGNO - Roberto Padilla en Philadelphia Institute
    2007-06-07 06:31:03
