    Best of Philly: Uniforms
    2008-08-05 15:40:56
Alright, after dissecting the horrid array of Philly sports attire, we can move on to the second installment, which is obviously, the 10 best uniforms in Philly sports history. Some of these were easy, some were tough, but I'm sure there will be opinions about all. Here we go...

    Best/Worst of Philly: Uniforms
    2008-07-30 21:36:23
OK - well, our blog has been a little too “newsy” recently for my taste, so I’m starting a new Best/Worst of Philly segment that should generate some good discussion. My idea for the first segment, uniforms, came immediately after Elton Brand’s press conference, when instead of the current Sixers jersey, he raised an updated version [...]

    Philly's Anti-Gun Media
    2008-07-29 21:00:00
Can you imagine any major media company giving free advertising to the NRA? Let me tell you, it just doesn't happen. But in Philadelphia, Clear Channel Outdoors and Interstate Outdoor Advertising are giving more than 30 free billboards to the group Moms Against Guns. The group is using the billboard space to push for tougher gun-control laws in the state of Pennsylvania. The anti-gun group is also using the space to urge the election of anti-gun candidates. I'm not surprised these media companies...(read more)

This is old news already, but I would like to welcome Elton Brand to Philadelphia. I was a little worried about Brand coming back from the Achilles injury, but the Sixers obviously were not. NBA: Davis To Clippers Done, Josh Smith In Philly
    2008-07-02 11:25:00
The Baron Davis deal to the L.A. Clippers is basically done. Davis will reportedly get 5 years worth $65 million. Corey Maggette has been talked up by many teams, including Utah, Boston, and San Antonio. The bottom line is he wants to win now. But he is going to want to play way more than what the Celtics can offer him, so that's pretty much out. The Spurs look to have the upper hand in those

Philly Beats Colon, Red Sox...DVD Winners Update...Philadephia 8 Boston 2
    2008-06-17 08:37:00
Things didn't work out that well Monday night in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia, as the home team beat the world champs 8-2. Home runs by Dustin Pedroia and JD Drew were how the two Sox runs scored, and boy, is JD swinging the bat well! Hey Mr. Drew, keep it up, maybe through the end of October. Please?Things didn't go so well for Sox starter Bartolo Colon, who had his first really bad start of this season. But Philly can hit the heck out of the ball, and when Colon tried to do the same exact thing, his helmet flew off and he hurt his back by flailing wildly at a pitch. I hope he will not miss a start and I cannot wait to be back at Fenway after the Thursday off day.To the two very special DVD winners, my apologies. The sets went out, mailed from the main Hartford post office to speed delivery times, but I wasn't able to do it until this early morning. One padded envelope is on its way to Farmington and one is winging its way to our neighbor, Canada. So many things happened t

On To Philly With A Victory For The Sox...Back to Boston For The Celtics, With The Lakers In Tow...A US Open Noon Playoff...Boston 9 Cincinnati 0
    2008-06-16 04:29:00
The Great American Ballpark is the home of the Cincinnati Reds. It's also a place, as the Boston Red Sox found out in a 9-0 defeat of those Reds, that's fairly easy to hit one out into the seats. Yesterday, without their two big sluggers, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, the visitors from Boston smashed four home runs. Jacoby Ellsbury, who set the Red Sox rookie record for steals in a season with 33, Justin Pedroia, the still white-hot JD Drew and Coco Crisp all went deep, and it led to a great offensive display for the world champions. It was the first time since '97 that the first three hitters in the Boston lineup hit taters. Who were they? Nomar, John Valentin and Connecticut's own (Too Big) Mo Vaughn. Outfielder Coco Crisp had this to say after the shutout ended..."We have a good hitting team," Crisp said. "Those guys make us better, no doubt. But without them, we were still able to put up some good runs. It shows that we can still play good ball as a team without the two superstars

    Philly Ramblings
    2008-05-27 20:41:57
Just getting my 2 cents in on a variety of issues that I don't feel like writing a whole post on. - Jamie Moyer, 45, has not completely shut the door on returning to pitch next year, and considering he hasn't counted on arm strength for awhile, it is certainly a possibility. If Moyer does return, and gets 15 more wins before he retires, he will be just the 8th Left-Handed pitcher ever to finish his career with 250 wins and 2,000 strikeouts. The others are Randy Johnson, Steve Carlton, Tom Glavine, Warren Spahn, Tommy John, Jim Kaat, Lefty Grove and Eddie Plank. - Pedro Feliz has a higher BA, OBP and SLG% than the Nationals Ryan Zimmerman. - Considering how good our offense and bullpen are, all the Phillies need from their Pitching Staff is Cole Hamels and 4 guys with a 4.50 ERA. Right now the ERAs of our 5 starting pitchers are 3.18, 4.45, 4.71, 5.37, 5.79. Too bad cheap one-year options like Livan Hernandez (4.22), Kyle Lohse (4.26), Odalis Perez (4.13) and Mark Hendrickson (4.14)

I'll take a Philly cheese with a side of JC

Philadelphia is the 6th largest city in the United States with a population of 5.9 million. Being the first industrialized city in the United States was quite a feat, and can be seen in almost every part of the city. One thing I did notice however is a lack of JC. The east coast attitude seems to be one of get out of MY way I'M busy. Quite selfish and cold. This could be the reason that JC ain't spilling out of the pores of city murals and statues. A lot of artwork seems to be based on a few

Philly Cop Beating Caught on Tape
    2008-05-07 15:20:11
A video showing at least 15 Philadelphia police officers viciously kicking, punching and beating three Black men has residents in an uproar. In the video, featured below, officers are caught hitting the suspects with blackjacks after pulling them from their car late Monday. The three men were under suspicion for a murder Sunday night involving 20-year-old man. Tensions had already been high in Philly following the fatal shooting of Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski on Saturday, the third city offic

Incredible beating of three suspects by a dozen Philly cops is caught on tape
    2008-05-07 13:47:00
Reports say police were investigating a triple shooting. But the video, shot by WTXF, Fox 29 in Philadelphia, shows an incredible amount of force being used by a dozen cops on the suspects. Please take a few moments to watch the video.Keep in mind just a few days earlier, the Philadelphia Police Department lost one of its own in a horrific shooting. It's not immediately clear why the cops continued to pummel the suspects. It's also not clear whether the police realized a television chopper was overhead filming the scene. An expert retired police officer, Lou Palumbo of the NYPD, said on CNN today there must be a full investigation "to determine what drove this," before judgment is made. He also said there are clearly training issues that need to be addressed, as police officers are never trained to "kick and stomp on suspects."

Marvin Harrison questioned in Philly shooting

Ok so it’s not uncommon for shootings to occur in Philadelphia but it is uncommon for them to include NFL players. No it’s not involving Pacman Jones or Chris Henry either. It involved the Colts Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison. Definitely didn’t see that one coming. Marvin Harrison is considered one of the nicest [...]

OK, guys, I just got back from the Sixers game tonight, and I am still a little hot by the way they played in the second half. This game was the classic tale of two halves, and the 76ers picked the wrong one to show up for. Best way to describe this game is - [...]

76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Philly Punches Back in Game 3
    2008-04-25 22:23:19
Where do you start when your team comes off a disappointing playoff loss and plays the best game you could have asked for? I am beyond proud of our Philadelphia 76ers after tonight's performance. The Sixers came out right from the tap and jumped all over the Detroit Pistons. They completely dominated every aspect of the game for 48 minutes. The result: a 95-75 dismantling of the Detroit Pistons. Game Notes This game was unlike either of the first two in that the Sixers finally maintained their great start. They opened up on a 6-0 run with 5 offensive rebounds in the first six minutes and never really looked back. A few things really stood out to me:

76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Philly Steals Game 1
    2008-04-20 21:19:21
Who would have thought after being down 15-points on the road, playing against a championship-caliber team, getting 4-16 shooting by our best player and having a roster filled with playoff newbies, the 76ers would be up 1-0 in their first round playoff series against the Detroit Pistons? Well, surprise, surprise, that's the unsettling reality everyone in Detroit must face, most importantly Flip Saunders and his "experienced" Piston players. In the first quarter the Sixers came out with tons of energy and attacked. After that initial burst it became clear Detroit was the more experienced team. They executed well on offense and looked under control at all times. What was also clear was that the Sixers had no plans of backing down. The Good

So far Philly has avoided the worst of the housing crisis
    2008-02-16 12:01:00
“There’s a crisis nationwide, but I actually read something that said talking about a national real estate market is like giving the national temperature,” says Holly Mack-Ward, a Coldwell Banker Preferred realtor. “It varies from area to area. Philly, throughout history, has been relatively flat. It tends not to go as low or high, and that’s been the case here.” She goes so far as to say the market up to about the $500,000 range remains strong. She does, though, point out that Philly’s high-end real estate market has suffered a little—but not necessarily as much as have similar markets in other U.S. cities.

Offense Inept as Bills Drop Finale in Philly
    2007-12-30 23:05:27
Lynch strong, but O can't score in loss (AP photo/Tom Mihalek) Just how bad has Buffalo's offense been this season? WR Josh Reed put it into perspective after learning, after Buffalo's season-ending 17-9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, that his Bills offense had set a new team record for fewest touchdowns (20) in a season: "I don't want to say embarrassing," said Reed in reference to the dubious distinction. "I think frustrating is a better word. What can you say after so long? It's been a whole season of frustration, just waiting for it and waiting for it (to change) and it never came for us." Buffalo's offense went 0-for-the-red-zone, kicking three field goals and turning the ball over on downs once in their final pitiful performance of the 2007 season. Their abysmal effort wasted a solid one from Buffalo's defense, which played well enough - as usual - to win. It was a fitting end to Buffalo's season, as 2007 turned into one in which Buffalo prov

ESPN uses Philly Bar to film Jets MNF ad
    2007-07-17 11:30:14
From the Philadelphia Inquirer: It is 3 a.m. on Friday morning, and last call at Manayunk’s Liberties U.S. Hotel Bar & Grill was supposed to be an hour ago. There are no patrons tonight, or, at least, no ordinary ones. Instead the bar in the green heart of Eagles country is occupied by actors adorned in New York Jets gear, a bartender who’s only played the part in movies, and dozens of crew members working on everything from lighting to costumes to props. ESPN has taken over this modest Main Street nightspot, one of five sets in the Philadelphia area used for seven Monday Night Football commercials. “We chose Philadelphia for an authenticity standpoint,” said Jarrett Dube, an ESPN marketing manager. “Philadelphia is obviously a very big and well-known football market. . . . The people here are die-hard football fans.” In addition to Liberties, the commercial sites were McFadden’s at Citizens Bank Park; Finnegan’s Wake in Northern Libe

With Too Many QB’s in Philly; Holcomb May Look to Minnesota
    2007-07-05 14:59:40
No question with the drafting of Kevin Kolb in the first round of this years draft that the Philadelphia Eagles have a logjam at the QB spot. One player that knows his time in Philly may be drawing near is QB Kelly Holcomb. The veteran QB looks like the odd man out when it comes to even getting a shot at playing this season, and already he is laying the groundwork to play elsewhere. One place he may look to land is in Minnesota, where the team is going to give youngster Tarvaris Jackson the first crack at the QB spot. Last season Jackson, a first-round draft choice, was thrown into the action late into the season, and had his ups and downs. He was 47-for-81 passing for 475 yards, two TD’s and four picks. While the Vikings are high on him, they have to be careful not to bank the entire 2007 on Jackson. “I just believe he is going to incrementally grow,” coach Brad Childress said of Jackson. “We’ve watched it here in the offseason program. You watch him arou

Can Philly and Chicago Pull off a MegaDeal?
    2007-05-22 15:26:17
You have to love outlandish trade rumors. After all, isn’t that what sells newspapers and keeps readers coming back to websites day after day, week after week?  With that, the Philly Inquirer has come up with one deal that would be a blockbuster of blockbusters, involving two huge names.  The names - Donovan McNabb and Lance Briggs. The rumor has the Eagles, who know that Donovan is whining about the team drafting QB Kevin Kolb, trading McNabb to the QB starving Bears for linebacker Briggs, who has stated he will not play for the Bears again.  Briggs, at 26 years old, would be a huge upgrade at the LB spot for the Eagles, while McNabb would upon his arrival, become the starting QB for the NFC Champion Bears. Now of course this deal is more likely to happen in fantasy football than the real NFL, but it does make some legit sense for both teams.  Briggs fills a needed position for the Eagles, who showed last year they can win a division title without McNabb.  The Bears showed
