| Cartoon Laws of Physics | | 2008-08-21 12:40:01 | | Cartoon Law IAny body suspended in space will remain in space until made aware of its situation. Daffy Duck steps off a cliff, expecting further pastureland. He loiters in midair, soliloquizing flippantly, until he chances to look down. At this point, the familiar principle of 32 feet per second squared takes over. Exception: This does not apply to cool characters who've never studied law. Appendum: Any species capable of flight, upon distraction of vertigo, will lose ability of flight. Conversely, any two feathers held in each hand and waved will (temporarily) give flight to any character that does so. Cartoon Law IIAny body in motion will tend to remain in motion until solid matter intervenes suddenly. Whether shot from a cannon or in hot pursuit on foot, cartoon characters are so absolute in their momentum that only a telephone pole or an outsize boulder retards their forward motion absolutely. Sir Isaac Newton called this sudden termination of motion the stooge's surcease. Cartoon | | By: Stupid Tips | | |

| The Physics Of The Impossible | | 2008-04-03 02:55:00 | | "The Physics Of The Impossible" - an interesting title, isn't it? Any idea what is it? It's a book that was created by Kaku, a professor at the City University of New York. He had created a stir in Britain as he released that book. Kaku believes in Teleportation, Time Travel, Telepathy, Invisibility, and more. (The image on the right is NASA's artist illustration of a spaceship which enters a wormhole.)Here's a overview of who Kaku really is:Kaku, one of the earliest proponents of string theory, still a contentious issue among physicists, divides the most common science-fiction tropes, or "impossibilities," into three categories — possible soon, possible in the far future and really, truly impossible.Category 1, as he dubs it, includes things that may become true within the next century, if not the next few decades: teleportation (already possible, but only among subatomic particles); telepathy (thanks to brain implants); invisibility (already being researched using light-bending 'm | | By: The Blogger and The Blog | | |

| 'Spookiness' of quantum physics clarified by loopy photons | | 2008-03-19 07:53:15 | | Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Joint Quantum Institute (NIST/University of Maryland) have developed a new method for creating pairs of entangled photons, particles of light whose properties are interlinked in a very unusual way dictated by the rules of quantum physics. The researchers used the photons to test fundamental concepts in quantum theory.

| Crayon Physics Deluxe - Game Demo | | 2008-03-03 13:37:51 | |
Crayon Physics Deluxe is a cool 2D interactive game, and winner of the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the 2008 Independent Games Festival.
Built on a Box2D Physics Engine, the game requires you to draw simple geometric shapes to solve its puzzles. The objects thus drawn, follow the basic laws of physics and shape the course of the game.
The game is a sequel to the original Crayon Physics game, which is available as a free download at the creator’s site.
Though the original game is, according to the game maker, "a quick and ugly prototype," I really had a ton of fun playing it.
Link to the site. Download the original game here.

| Giant Magneto Resistance--- Wins Physics Noble Prize for 2007 | | 2007-10-09 15:52:00 | | The 2007 Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg for simultaneously and independently discovering Giant magneto resistance. This property has allowed the explosion of disk-space growth and is cited as being one of the first nano-technology breakthroughs.Magnetoresistance is the property of a material to change the value of its electrical resistance when an external magnetic field is applied to it. The effect was first discovered by William Thomson in 1856.The magnetoresistance of conventional materials is quite small; but materials with large magnetoresistance have been synthesized now. Depending on the magnitude, it is called either as Giant magnetoresistance(GMR) or Colossal magnetoresistance(CMR). Magnetoresistance has aroused great interest recently because of possible application in devices such as read/write heads in computer discs and in sensors.Colossal Magnetoresistance has been predominantly discovered in manganese-based perovskite oxides. This arises because of strong mutual coupling of spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom. Hence not only high temperature superconductivity, but also new magnetoelectronic properties are increasingly discovered in materials with perovskite structures. GMR involves structures consisting of very thin layers of different magnetic materials. The technology has allowed hard disk sensors to read and write much more dataThe information is retrieved by a read-out head that scans the disk and registers the magnetic changes. The smaller and more compact the hard disk, the smaller and weaker the individual magnetic areas. More sensitive read-out heads are therefore needed when more information is crammed on to a hard disk.hard drives in computers, iPods and other digital devices. A computer hard-disk reader that uses a GMR sensor is equivalent to a jet flying at a speed of 30,000 kmph, at a height of just one metre above the ground, and yet being able to see and catalogue every single blade of g | | By: Science & Technology Today | | |
