News: Pilots fell asleep on Air India
    2008-06-27 07:25:01
An Air India flight headed for Mumbai from Dubai overshot its destination and was halfway to Goa before its dozing pilots were woken out of a deep slumber by air traffic control. The high altitude nap took place approximately two weeks ago. Some 100 passengers were on board the state-run flight that originated from Dubai and flew to the western Indian city of Jaipur before heading south to Mumbai when both pilots fell asleep, a source told the paper. The plane flew to Mumbai on autopilot, but when air traffic there tried to help the aircraft land, the plane ignored their instructions and carried on at full speed towards Goa. U.S. Fighter Pilots Navigating Crowded Airspace in Iraq
    2008-05-04 14:34:00
ABOARD THE USS HARRY S. TRUMAN -- U.S. pilots flying missions over Iraq come to the region expecting a host of challenges, including swirling sandstorms and urban battlefields filled with a mix of enemies and civilians. But Naval aviators flying off the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman said one of the newest difficulties has been the least expected: navigating increasingly crowded airspace in a region that has experienced the world's fastest airline growth in recent years. Military Pilots
    2008-03-24 23:12:30
If it weren’t for flight training in the armed forces, we probably wouldn’t have pilots for the commercial airlines I post about so often. We may not have had any astronauts for the Mercury or Apollo missions, either. And we wouldn’t have Top Gun, either! Military pilots are the real cowboys of the modern world. There’s a reason Chuck Yeager was included in the collage I made for the Manly Men post. It takes a lot of balls to break the sound barrier, or fly deep into enemy territory, or land on an aircraft carrier. Aircraft carriers may look big, but don’t compare them to boats. Compare then to airport runways, and that’s when you realize how tiny they are! Anyone who’s ever had to land on one gets my respect automatically.    Air Drops To operate in the world of the military pilot, you have to understand the language. Here’s a glossary of definitions, lies, and universal truths

This is footage of Lufthansa Flight LH44, an Airbus A330, trying to land at the Hamburg Airport during the middle of storm on 3/1/2008. I don’t know how the pilots pulled this one out. The goddamn wing touches the ground! I definitely don’t know how to fly but if you are approaching the runway at [...]

News: Did Pilots Fell Asleep in a 30 Minute Flight?
    2008-02-23 06:56:55
As a frequent traveller, each time I step onto a plane, I feel like I am handing over my life to someone else. I try not to think about the risks involved in flying at 10 miles above safe ground. Sometimes, though news reports make me doubt if I should trust "the system", I hand my life to. This is one of them:Go! Flight 1002 took off from Honolulu at 9:20 a.m. on Feb. 13. It was scheduled to land in Hilo at 10:05 a.m., but the plane flew beyond Hilo Airport and was out of contact with air traffic controllers for more than 20 minutes, officials said.Investigators are trying to determine whether the pilots fell asleep and continued to fly out to sea, or if there was some sort of technical communication problem. The FAA said that even if the pilots did have a communication problem, normal procedure would be to stick to the flight plan and land the aircraft in Hilo at the appointed time. Argentine Pilots Break Silence Over World War Two
    2008-01-07 10:52:00
By David LjunggrenOTTAWA - In early October 1942, Flight Lieutenant Donald McLarty was shot down over Libya on his 199th mission of World War Two. Although he was flying for Britain's Royal Air Force, his uniform was emblazoned with an unexpected word: Argentina. Many foreigners fought for the various Allied air forces, but until now historians have largely focused on pilots from Czechoslovakia, Poland, France and Norway -- all of which were occupied by German forces.Few realize that more than 800 young men from neutral Argentina, some of them schoolboys, rushed to sign up as pilots and then made the long, dangerous trip to Europe by boat. When McLarty climbed into his Hurricane fighter-bomber for a low-level attack on a German base in Libya, he needed to complete just two more missions to earn a long break from active duty. It was not to be."It was a very stupid operation ... the moment we crossed the coast I could see the soldiers waiting," recalled McLarty, now 85."I was hit immediately by ground fire in the engine and had oil all over my windscreen. All I could do was fly in formation with the guy next to me and then my tail was blown off."McLarty's plane smacked into the ground, barrelled straight through two parked German fighters and ended up in a pile of empty gasoline drums.German officers produced a glass of White Horse whisky for the 20-year-old and then shipped him off to a prison camp.McLarty and others were persuaded to speak by Argentine historian Claudio Meunier, who spent a decade unearthing hidden stories of heroism and heartbreak."No one had asked them, no one remembered them. The memories were painful," Meunier told Reuters. Some pilots were native Argentines while the surnames of others reveal they were descended from British professionals who helped develop the country's railways, mines and farms."Other people had fought for the freedoms we'd been living under and so I felt it incumbent on us to do the same thing, as the evil of Hitler was ver

    Stone Temple Pilots
    2007-06-26 03:35:55

    Pilots vs Mechanics
    2007-04-15 22:59:00
This is one that I first heard about 15 years ago. I forgot about it and have seen it surface in different versions since then. The other versions list the Air Force and several different airlines, but the first time I heard it, Northwest Airlines mechanics and pilots were the crews involved. I thought I would resurrect it here: Here are what some swear are copies of actual maintenance

    Baked bean pilots
    2006-02-16 11:55:12
Hello there, Thanks for your great message, loving the colours and the fonts and the words and everything about it, although did you really need to add that amount of punctuation?!?!?!! Anyway, I'm currently away on a mission to train baked beans to become better pilots on long-haul flights. I'm sure you'll agree that on a local flight, or one lasting about two hours, your average baked bean pilot is more than capable and does a great job. However on flights to America and the Far East, they are frankly not up to the job and you're much better using a potato or a gherkin. Not for much longer though! I hope that my new generation of baked beans will soon prove to be excellent pilots and that you not only enjoy flying with them, but you'll really enjoy their company as well and would be more than happy to go for a beer with them afterwards! Here's to baked beans then! Hip hip, Hooray! Oh, and this should only take a weekend so I'll see you on Monday! Cheerio! Vince.
