| Rockies 5, Pirates 2 | | 2008-07-18 22:23:00 | | Well, coming off the All-Star Break, the Bucs were at 44-50, not good by any means, but the best mark they've had in quite a few years. They had a stretch coming up against a string of terrible teams, the Rockies, Astros, Padres, and Rockies again. Fans and players are for some reason clamoring for management to not break the team up, urging the team to shoot for success now, not in the future.---How did they respond?---Two lackluster losses to a very poor Colorado Rockies team to start things o | | By: Raise the Jolly Roger! | | |
| | Not Good: Rockies 5, Pirates 3 | | 2008-07-17 22:40:00 | | The Bucs jumped out to a 3-0 lead early off Ubaldo Jimenez, and Paul Maholm was perfect through the first go-round of the Rockie order.---It was all Rockies for the rest of the night. Ubaldo found himself, went 7 innings and was flawless after the 3 runs, and Maholm blew up. His implosion was capped by a Chris Ianetta broken-bat moon shot that broke the tie. Jimenez and the Rockie bullpen shut it down from there--the Bucs just got two baserunners after the early offensive outburst.---Ugly start | | By: Raise the Jolly Roger! | | |

| Cardinals 6, Pirates 0 | | 2008-07-11 23:18:00 | | Not much more to say about this one.----Zach Duke was definitely off his game, as St. Louis hit two bombs to take an early lead. The all-of-a-sudden-really-good Kyle Loshe made it stand up with 8 shutout innings.----The Bucs were never really in this game. Those days happen.

| | Pirates 4, Yankees 2 | | 2008-07-11 12:49:00 | | This one was special for a number of reasons.--First and foremost (and most obvious), it came against the Yankees. Although Pittsburgh was not buzzing with all the hype we saw in late June, the park was still packed, and the crowd was much more involved in the game than usual. The fact that this win gives the Pirates a series victory over New York is not only impressive, but meaningful to the team and fans. The Bucs also snapped a Yankee four game win streak.--Paul Maholm--what a night! Last time | | By: Raise the Jolly Roger! | | |

| Yanks drop makeup game 4-2 to Pirates | | 2008-07-10 18:42:00 | | The Pirates ended the Yankees' 4-game winning streak with a 4-2 win in a makeup game from the June 26th rainout. This really bothers knowing last time out they were winning 3-1 and also having Matsui and Damon out makes this lineup so much weaker.ON THE MOUND:Mike Mussina started for the Yankees and pitched well enough to win, in 6 innings he allowed 2 runs on 9 hits, while walking none and striking out 5.He may have only given up one run had the Yankees' defense not let Mussina down in the 5th.Jack Wilson reached when his grounder went under the glove of Robinson Cano. Then Nate McLouth followed with what should have been a double play, but Derek Jeter's throw went wide of Jorge Posada, who was playing first base. A real first baseman makes the play. McLouth later stole 2nd, moved to 3rd when Jose Molina's throw went into center field, and scored on a sac fly for the Pirates' second run of the game.Jose Veras who has been very effective lately did not show up, but that's going to happ | | By: The Evil Empire | | |

Johnny got 2 quick outs, then hit a batter, walked the next one, and gave up a homer to Geoff Blum. Yeah. Geoff Blum. He'd give up three more singles (another run) before getting to the dugout for the fateful picture you see above.----Amazingly, though, Houston refused to accept the Pirates' concession of the game. They did bring out the bats, though, scoring 6 straight runs to actually take a two run lead (Bay and LaRoche homered, Nate hit a 3-run double).----Duke, Denny Bautista, and John Grabow combined to give up seven unanswered runs. They actually could have been in control had they not gone 1/11 with runners in scoring position for the first 5 innings. A bunch of baserunners and hits off ace Ben Sheets (the Bucs knocked him out after 5.2) only amounted to one run.---And one run was going to be nowhere near enough on this day. | | Pirates 9, Reds 5 | | 2008-07-02 21:34:00 | | A relatively clean win, I suppose. Nothing to complain about if we win a game JVB starts.---The Pirates got their lead-blowing habit out of the way early today. They lit up starter Daryl Thompson for 4 runs very quickly in the first inning.Johhny V. was quick to give it back, though, surrendering a quick bomb to superman Bruce in the 1st and really blowing up in the 2nd, allowing 4 more, including a 3 run shot by Bruce (again).---X-man was having none of that, though, tying the game with a solo | | By: Raise the Jolly Roger!
| | Pirates 6, Reds 5 | | 2008-07-02 11:35:00 | | Another crazy game. Tons of mistakes. Blown leads. Extra innings. And, yes, a win.-------First things first. Zach Duke started and pitched quite well. He was completely dealing for 5 innings, at which point he had allowed no runs and no walks. Even better, the Bucs had amassed 3 runs to back him, thanks to doubles by Bautista and LaRoche. | | Pirates Take One of Three From Rays | | 2008-06-29 16:58:00 | | That's not a whole lot to be proud of, even though the Rays are one of the best teams in baseball.--But, consider our starting pitching for the weekend. Barthmaier, Taubenheim, and Gorzelanny.--Yes, we actually won one of those games. And one of the two losses was actually close.-A minor accomplishment, given the circumstances.--------Today (Sunday), the Bucs and Rays staged a close contest, featuring good pitching from Gorzelanny(!) and Andy Sonnanstine (who is a jerk--more on that later). Suffice it to say: Jimmy Barthmaier did not have the best of major league debuts. He ALMOST had a nice first inning, until he walked Hinske and gave up a homer to Evan Longoria (who can HIT: 4-5, HR, 2B, 2 singles, 3RBI). Jimbo would surrender another 3-run bomb (Hinske) later in the game. He only lasted 2.1 and gave up 7 runs, all earned. His ERA? 27.00.

Actually, Wandy Rodriguez is having a good year, but he's really not that good (trust me). The Bucs only got 5 hits, the only extra-base hit being a Jack double. Tragically, I don't have a ton of time so I'll sum it up real quick:-Gorzo was awful again (at first)--giving up 2 runs in the 1st and 3rd innings. The Cards were spraying lasers all over the ballyard.-It stayed 4-0 through 6 innings because Wainwright was dealing. | | Pirates Draft Prediction | | 2008-06-03 05:00:00 | | The draft is and has been a hotly debated topic among Bucco fans over the past year, and for good reason. | | Game 56 Recap--Pirates 4 Cardinals 7 | | 2008-06-01 16:37:00 | | You know, the fact that our 1 and 2 starters are looking like automatic losses at this point is not a good thing. Duke, Maholm, and Dumatrait have been solid, but to go over .500 for a five game stretch, we need all three of those guys to pitch well. Unlikely.----Today, the culprit was Ian Snell. I went to the 14-inning game on Saturday, but had an incredibly busy Sunday, so I haven't had any time to post about two of the best games all year, including one I went to. Luckily, the team has the day off today so I can try to catch up. It will be difficult.---I'll start with Saturday. Going down to the game wasn't on the top of my list--Friday had been miserable and we'd probably be outnumbered by Cub fans because of the Stanley Cup. B | | By: Raise the Jolly Roger!
| | Lilly Tries to Right the Ship -- Cubs at Pirates : 12:35pm CDT / 1:35pm EDT | | 2008-05-25 12:22:11 | |
Ted Lilly, as has been well documented by his fan club, can dominate opposing batters in a way that makes you think he has special mind powers. In his last four starts, Mr. Lilly is 4-0 with a 3.55 ERA, striking out 31 and walking only six. Mind freakin' powers, baby.
However, absent the win last night, the Pirates are a team that has proven to be very susceptible to such mind powers. Let's hope that Mr. Lilly decides to unleash his talent today.
The Cubs need to forget that Jason Freakin' Bay's game-winning single was his first RBI single of the year. Lou should not forget that it was over a drawn-in outfield in the 14th inning.
Good news is that Soriano's LCI (see my fine headlines below to see this new stat that Bruce Miles and I came up with) is rising, so maye he'll stop running like his lunch is making a return appearance.
Another thing to remember: the Pirates haven't beaten the Cubs on back-to-back days since Sept. 4-5, 2006. Not that anyone should get | | By: A League of Her Own

Ted Lilly (5-4, 4.96/1.27) vs. Paul Maholm (2-5, 5.03/1.57)
The last time the Cubs played 6 road games against division opponents, they limped back to Wrigley with a 2-4 record. Today is the finale of another 6-game road trip against teams in the central....and the Cubs are 2-3 thus far. This is a big game today, not for any other reason besides a good flight back to Chicago with a win under their belt. The Cubs have played a little better than the 2-3 record indicates but 3-3 has a much better ring to it than 2-4.
Ted Lilly will try to earn his first victory of the year against the Bucs while the Cubs will try to beat Paul Maholm for the first time in his career. Look for Henry Blanco to start behind the plate with Geovany Soto catching all 14 innings on Saturday night.

It's Saturday night, and it's an early night for baseball. Let's review the salient facts:
1. Cubs are 9-1 against the Pirates this year. It's like playing my kid's coach-pitch baseball team.
2. Marquis' only two wins this year have been against the Pirates. 3. The Cubs' 19 hits vs. the Pirates yesterday were a season-best, one better than the 18 they produced against ... you guessed it ... the Pirates on April 20.
4. While Marquis...has had some trouble...Dumatrait has shitty facial hair to match his pitching this year. You're 0-2 there, brother.
The only bad news is that the Cubs won't face the Pirates again until August. Let's enjoy this while it last, fellas!

Jason Marquis (2-3, 4.96/1.61) vs. Phil Dumatrait (1-2, 4.39/1.56)
It is been more than six weeks since the Cubs won back-to-back games on the road and tonight they will try to accomplish that feat behind Jason Marquis. For the second time in a week Jason Marquis will face Phil Dumatrait. Marquis was on the winning side of their first match-up last Sunday at Wrigley and the Pirates could receive a little boost tonight.
Reports have indicated Jack Wilson could return to the Pirates lineup tonight. Wilson has been on the DL with an injured left calf and has been on a rehab assignment for the last week. Wilson would help the Pirates both offensively and defensively.

Carlos Zambrano (6-1, 2.45/1.20) vs. Zach Duke (2-2, 4.23/1.59)
The Cubs return to action tonight in search of their first win since Monday. Lou Piniella's crew lost the last two in Houston and will try to avoid their first 3-game losing streak of the season. The Cubs must figure out how to win games on the road. At home they are looking, and playing, like an entirely different team. The Cubs are 19-8 and have made Wrigley a home field advantage. On the road this season, is a different story. The Cubs are 2 games under .500 at 9-11 and have won only one series on the road this year....in Pittsburgh on their first series of the year away from Wrigley (April 7, April 9-10)

We have a rematch from Saturday, today.
For the Cubs, Carlos Zambrano is getting the start. Carlos has been great all season, except for his last outing where he broke a bat over his knee and lost the game. But that was all because I called it beforehand and I control the Universe.
Laugh it Up, Carlos
Carlos Zambrano is a Gemini, and his horoscope is:

Of course there was the Freddy-not-knowing-how-many-outs-thing, but once Milwaukee started to pile on, things just got sloppy, even if they didn't cost us runs.3. The pitching. Today is an important game for Jason Marquis as well as the Cubs. Lou Piniella was not pleased following Marquis performance last Tuesday and with the emergence of Sean Gallagher as well as the depth in Iowa, Marquis could be pitching to stay in the rotation. While the Cubs may not know what they will get from other options, the inconsistent performances from Marquis, to this point this season, has been the only thing Lou Piniella can count on when he gives Marquis the ball.
The Cubs, on the other hand, have put together a very good homestand but dropping the last two to the Pirates would bring a negative end to a very positive week.

Every Cub with more than 8 at-bats against Duke has hit him very well except for Mark DeRosa who is 2-12. Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Ronny Cedeno, Alfonso Soriano and Ryan Theriot have all beat up on him. Zambrano needs to stay away from Jason Bay who “owns” him and Xavier Nady has hit him hard as well. Odd that 2 right handers in one lineup have performed so well against Zambrano.
