How to pitch cast with a spinning rod
    2008-06-30 21:46:41
I love fishing with spinning rods, they are easier to use than any other type of reel and great for beginners. Lets face it not everyone enjoys fishing with a baitcaster and even though a spinning reel is not quite as accurate with some simple tips you can make it work for you. Many anglers believe that accurate pitching (or pitch casting) can only be achieved with a good quality baitcaster. However, this is not the case and there are a couple of very successful anglers with killer pitching techniques for spinning reels. Pitch casting is very useful for fishing in close quarters especially when there is cover overhead or to the side of where you are casting from or casting to (such as casting under a dock or a tree). It is also a useful method of casting in the shallows when you do not wish to spook the fish. How to pitch castThe technique for pitch casting with a spinning rod is not difficult, but does require a bit of practice. Set up a target in the backyard or local park about 20 fee

Will Twitter Change the Media Pitch?

Check out Stowe Boyd's mandate that all pitches are over Twitter in format he calls the Twitpitch. It does make you really hone your message if you only have 140 characters.

Monday Off-Base Diary: Killing Time Until First Pitch Edition
    2008-06-02 15:06:31
Six hours and 19 minutes until gametime? Bleh. If you're one of the millions of geeky Americans riveted by the search for a "goldilocks planet," which would be not too hot, not too cold, but covered in water in juuuusssst right, we have a new contender: ST. LOUIS - There's a new extrasolar planet on the block: a mini-orb likely covered with a deep ocean. And it takes the record for the lowest-mass exoplanet to orbit a normal star, astrophysicists announced Monday. The li'l planet - weighing in at three times Earth's mass ?- grabs the lightweight title from a five-Earth-mass planet just announced in April. The super-Earth is called MOA-2007-BLG-192Lb, after its host star MOA-2007-BLG-192L, which is located about 3,000 light-years from Earth. (A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, or about 5.88 trillion miles - 9.46 trillion kilometers.) The astrophysicists suggest the tiny planet supports a thick atmosphere, which along with possible interior heating by radioactiv

How important is the 1st pitch strike?
    2008-06-02 12:40:58
One of the things I look at consistently, but rarely comment on, is how a starting pitcher does at getting ahead in the count 0-1. One of the best that I’ve seen at doing this is Greg Maddux. Because this concept isn’t regularly referenced, it’s tough to know what a good outing is and what [...]

And “The Pitch” checks off one of them for you in its Monday edition, taking issue with the absence of Carlos Quentin’s name on the All-Star ballot despite his leading the AL in home runs and carrying the [...]

A Double Switch, An Error and a Wild Pitch
    2008-05-25 00:50:55
Game Forty-Nine - Cubs 4 Pirates 5 - 14 innings WP - John Grabow (4-1) LP - Michael Wuertz (0-1) Save - None The Cubs lost their first game of the year at PNC Park and most importantly fell to 2-3 on the road trip. Michael Wuertz took the loss after Henry Blanco was unable to scoop a low throw in the dirt by Ryan Theriot. Freddy Sanchez advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch and to 3rd on a ground out to short by Luis Rivas. After an intentional walk to Nate McLouth, Jason Bay hit a single into left center past the drawn in outfield to end the game. While the game was decided in the 14th inning, there were two plays and a decision by Lou Piniella that played a part in the final outcome. The Cubs battled back and took the lead in the 8th inning. Down 3-1, Ryan Theriot walked, Derrek Lee singled and Aramis Ramirez hit a game tying double into the corner in left that allowed Lee to score all the way from 1st base. With 2 outs, Kosuke Fukudome lined a single into center that scored Ramirez with

Like Mussina, Kennedy Learns To Pitch Like Jamie Moyer
    2008-05-22 23:15:00
Well, call it a little bit of a joke, but The Bronx Stop mimicked Hank and said Kennedy needed to pitch like Jamie Moyer after his last start. And just like Mike Mussina got the win after Hank made that comment, Ian Kennedy got the win* (well he should have but didn't actually...) after we said it. Interesting...hahahaMark Feinsand/New York Daily News:The dramatic ending to Thursday nights game was made possible by a solid performance by Ian Kennedy, who may have needed the threat of losing his job - again - to get his act together. One night after it was announced that Joba Chamberlain would be stretched out over the next few weeks before entering the starting rotation, Kennedy gave the Yankees his best effort of the season. Kennedy allowed just one run on four hits in six innings, matching his longest outing of the season while giving up less than three runs for the first time in seven starts. Kennedy did walk four, but none of them came around to score. Orioles lefthander Brian B

Zambrano Pitch ID’s - And You Thought I Forgot?
    2008-05-17 20:04:00
Thanks to some great stuff from Matt Lentzner at the PFX Summit, I feel like I've nailed down El Toro's stuff. Using home games from 2008 (not today's) and the idea of arm slot = PFX "elipse axis", I dug out five pitches. I think we can quibble on some of the fuzzy borders, and the pitch names, but I think the splits are on target. cfx#pfx_xpfx_zmphdegrpm CU96.3-2.569.9247.5685.2 F4215-10.24.891.2244.61,480.7 FC221-4.28.491.0206.11,239.9 SI52-8.20.585.0190.61,019.5 SL884.63.682.1130.8730.8 cfx#B%CS%SS%F%X%HR%Sw%Whiff%B:CSISZ%corner%SwOOZ%TaISZ% CU944.422.211.111.111.10.033.3333.332.033.330.0033.3366.67 F421530.224.24.717.723.30.045.5810.201.352.5614.8835.2935.42 FC22138.517.67.220.415.40.943.8916.492.241.6314.0326.3623.77 SI5240.45.813.511.528.80.053.8525.007.025.0015.3843.5911.11 SL8838.615.914.811.418.21.145.4532.502.445.4513.6427.0826.00 58535.718.88.017.119.80.545.4717.671.944.6214.1931.4828.78 Update: All pitches in PFX database, 2007-2008 cfx#pfx_xpfx_zmph

You Can't Pitch If You Can't See

Bryan Hoch/MLB.Com:The newly bespectacled Phil Hughes was also making the rounds in the visitors clubhouse of Tropicana Field, showing off the prescription glasses that will help cure his slight nearsightedness the next time he takes a mound. That could be a while, though -- Hughes has been told a new X-ray will be taken on his fractured right rib in 2 1/2 weeks, so until then, he is limited to receiving treatment and riding a stationary bicycle. One question....what took so long? I was really getting sick of seeing Hughes squint to see the signs.

MLB Makes First Pitch Towards Going Green
    2008-05-12 11:26:00
Ben Platt/MLB.Com:Throughout its rich history, baseball's greatest moments have been played out on its lush fields of green. Now thanks to an unprecedented partnership, the national pastime is embracing the color green in a whole new way. Major League Baseball and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) have jointly announced the creation of a Team Greening Program. This program was developed to support and coordinate the many environmentally sensitive practices now pursued by virtually every Major League club. The joint effort marks the first time that Major League Baseball will implement a league-wide environmental protection strategy. "Baseball is a social institution with social responsibilities, and caring for the environment is inextricably linked to all aspects of our game," said Commissioner Bud Selig. "Sound environmental practices make sense in every way and protect our natural resources for future generations of baseball fans." The program will provide an individualize

    Farnsworth's New (old) Pitch
    2008-04-29 10:08:00
I couldn't really tell on TV, but According to Tyler Kepner, Kyle Farnsworth is now throwing a cutter. The pitch is actually something Farnsworth has had for a while, he just hadn't used it all that much.“I’ll throw it whenever [Jose] Molina puts it down,” Farnsworth said. “It’s like my old slider that I had when I was starting, my first couple of years. I was inconsistent with it, so I stopped using it. But I was working on it with Bruney, playing catch with him with it.”Thank you B

Why can't Padres' Peavy pitch on the road?
    2008-04-23 12:16:00
Has anybody else noticed that Jake Peavy is not pitching so well on the road this season?Five starts do not a season make, but Peavy’s home/road splits are certainly interesting thus far.In three home starts, the Padres ace has allowed just one run in 24 innings with 23 strikeouts. On the road, it’s seven runs in 12 innings with six strikeouts in two starts.Yes, it’s way, Way, WAY too early to draw conclusions, but the Peavy breakdown is interesting at this point.People have made much out of how Padre hitters are “Petco-ized” at Petco Park because of the difficulty in hitting there. But the reverse must also be asked: Are Padre pitchers being the opposite of Petco-ized on the road? (After all, they have allowed 44 runs in their last five road games.)Tonight, they return to Petco Park to play the San Francisco Giants. If Petco is going to be used as an excuse for the Padres not hitting, then the same must go for the other team.Peavy’s next start is Sunday at home vs. the Arizo

    The 60 Second Pitch...
    2007-07-08 03:29:00
What is the 60 Second Pitch? It's a contest where people can try out and see if they have a talent and ability for a job in the entertainment industry. And you know, I might try it myself, I would like to enter the contest as perhaps I can win and be the voice of a cartoon character. My husband always tells me that my voice sounds funny and weird, so perhaps I can qualify for a cartoon character voice. Anyway, at present, there's $4000.00 worth of prizes, and whether I enter the contest or not, I will still come out a winner if I can define my business through a 60 Second Pitch which is a voice actor. I would like that very much, and hope I can at least give it a try..

    VC Pitch Rules
    2007-04-03 15:16:00
VC Pitch RulesI found an interesting site by Laura Fitton, (follow the links below) one part that interested me was her rules on pitching I have posted on the challenges of pitching, and these thoughts are very close to my own....Your powerpoint isn't "your presentation" Once you've cut down your presentation to its desired length, take out a few more slides (you won't miss them and neither will the investors you're pitching) Always keep in mind the outcome – your entire presentation should be geared toward serving your audience and the result to which you're trying to drive End by encouraging next steps (rather than the throw away summary "this is the greatest deal ever" slide)Vary your tone, speed, inflection, etc. Don't memorize your speech (Be fluid, live your presentation ,my add lib)More at the links below, if you think you need your pitch polished and want a proffesional communicator, talk to Laura shes a good lady.....and if you want a test audience.....give me a shout.

How to Improve your Investor Pitch
    2007-01-06 13:41:00
I was chatting with a couple of young engineers who were getting ready to pitch to a group of Investors last month, and they were voicing there frustration about the difficulty they have had getting good help on preparing for presenting to Investors, I had asked if they had looked for a coach or grey beard and they said that they had asked around but most of the guys were looking for large up front payments before they even looked at there business plan, I gave them my number, email and later sent them a copy of my "how to prepare a pitch" by Guy Kawasaki, I have added it here today...Endless articles, books, and blogs have been written on the topic of business plan presentations and pitching to investors. In spite of this wealth of advice, almost every entrepreneur gets it wrong. Why? Because most guides to pitching your company miss the central point: The purpose of your pitch is to sell, not to teach. Your job is to excite, not to educate.Pitching is about understanding what your cu
