    Z Pitches, Z Hits....Cubs Win - Cubs 6 Marlins 3
    2008-07-25 00:32:16
Game One Hundred Two - Cubs 6 Marlins 3 WP - Carlos Zambrano (11-4) LP - Scott Olsen (6-5) Save - Carlos Marmol (4) Before Thursday night at the Friendly Confines the last time a Cubs' team beat the Florida Marlins was on April 25, 2006. Ten games and more than two years later Lou Piniella's crew ended the drought behind a total team effort....led by Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs' ace allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, only one extra base hit, with 6 strikeouts and no walks in 7 solid innings. Zambrano threw 125 pitches and retired the Marlins' dangerous offense just once in order. At the plate, Zambrano tied the game with a double in the 5th inning and scored the go ahead run on a bases loaded walk to Derrek Lee later in the inning. Lou Piniella received power, and production, from the bottom of his order. Ronny Cedeno hit his second home run of the season in the 3rd inning and Henry Blanco added his second round tripper of the year in the 6th. The seventh, eighth and ninth hitters were 4-for-9...

In Case You Were Wondering Joba Has Five Pitches
    2008-06-14 12:56:00
During Spring Training there was some talk about Joba developing a 2-seam, sinking fastball to go along with his four-seamer, slider, curve and change. Well he's now started using all five pitches regularly. From Peter Abraham:He threw 88 pitches. Jorge Posada estimated that 55 of them were fastballs. Of that, 10 were two-seam, sinking fastballs. That’s a pitch Chamberlain learned from Chien-Ming Wang. He also threw about 20 sliders and a handful of curves and changeups. He was also still hittin...

Joba Throws 40 Pitches--No One Scores
    2008-05-24 15:27:00
Anthony Dicomo/MLB.com:This "Joba Plan" suddenly seems like an awfully smart idea. The whole point of Joba Chamberlain converting from a starter to a reliever in the Major Leagues was so that he could help the Yankees, instead of wasting away innings in the Minors. And on this day, he did just that. Chamberlain pitched two shutout innings in relief of a shaky Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi hit a three-run homer and the Yankees cruised to yet another victory on Saturday, a 12-6 decision over the Mariners. Chamberlain entered the game in the sixth inning with the Yankees clinging to a one-run lead, and he proceeded to retire the first three Mariners he faced in order. From there, he completed his prescribed workload in stride, pitching two shutout innings in all.In those two innings, Chamberlain threw 26 fastballs (15 strikes), 11 sliders (seven strikes) and three curveballs (no strikes). His 40 pitches his most in a big-league game. ...

Vargas pitches gem, Heilman awful, as usual
    2008-05-14 21:36:00
So the Mets had to throw Claudio Vargas tonight. And he just went out and pitched a gem for 6 1/3 innings. And then, Aaron Heilman goes out and gives up three runs. Games like this are a reminder of how rules have to change in baseball.Heilman gave up the runs that ultimately gave the win to Washington. But because Vargas left the game and was responsible for the Nationals going up 2-1 (the Mets went on to score 2 more runs), Vargas gets the loss, even though it was Heilman's runs that caused the Mets to lose. For Mets fans, Heilman is quickly (and I mean quickly) becoming the 2000s version of Doug Sisk (whose #39 was ironically worn tonight by Vargas). Heilman's a really nice guy, or so it seems. He's always going out to charity events. He's always doing good things for the community. But as soon as the fans see the guy trotting in from the bullpen, the boos shower him at Shea. And once he starts throwing, he usually doesn't disappoint the faithful boo-birds.In the post-game press confere...

    Olsen Pitches a Gem
    2008-05-07 12:58:00
Had the opportunity to catch part of the Marlins' victory last night over the Brewers 3-0. Scott Olsen somehow has found his groove after being statistically the worst regular starter in the NL last season. He is now 4-1 with an excellent 2.22 ERA and a sparkling 1.05 WHIP.I particularly enjoyed the late stretch where Olsen got fired up after failing to give himself run support. Somehow the Marlins, with a 3-0 lead, had the bases loaded with no outs and got nothing out of that situation. Olsen struck out with 1 out in the inning and returned to the dugout livid with himself. Throwing stuff, the usual. Looks like his anger problems haven't entirely gone away. However, whatever he's done to control that anger has been working. Usually, he might have lost his focus and begun to pitch poorly. Instead he walked up to the mound and smoked Prince Fielder for a strikeout, eventually leading the team to a victory with 8 2/3 innings pitched. With the Philly loss, this puts us back in a first place...

Lester Pitches The Game Of His life Against Halladay..Red Sox 1 Blue Jays 0
    2008-04-30 04:16:00
The pivotal moment came in the top of the ninth inning of Tuesday's Red Sox/Blue Jay game at Fenway Park. The score was tied at zero and Scott Rolen stood on second base after smashing a two out double off of reliever supreme Jonathon Papelbon. Vernon Wells, who wanted to hit a drive up the middle so that his team would score the go ahead run, smashed a drive that did just that. The ball was scorched and Paps deflected it with his glove. Dustin Pedroia, who had already broken towards second base, dove and came up with the ball. He got up and threw out Wells, perserving the tie. Wells put it like this, and boy, did he make me laugh! Here you go..."My goal was to try to hit it up the middle," Wells said. "I saw it (the ball) get by the mound and I saw Superman at second base."Peter here, and our mini-Superman saved the game with that play, for the Sox scored one run in the bottom of the ninth and won the game 1-0. Congrats go to Pedey for making such a stunning grab and throw, reminicent...

Ryan Dempster Still Throws Three Pitches
    2008-04-04 03:56:00
Dempster may be cooking up some crow for me, and others, who doubted his ability to start.  He looks very fit as a result of all that running - which I also mocked - and, today, Ryan had great movement on his pitches, as Maddog noted earlier.  What was he throwing? Looking back to the end of February, here’s what we looked at from his 2007 relief outings. Once.  Seriously, that splitter is a one-off.  It does appear on the edge of the change-up cluster, so it might be something different. There could really be a 4th pitch up amongst his fastballs.  ...

Sen. Johnny Isakson (former Realtor) Pitches $15,000 Tax Credit
    2008-02-03 11:35:45
Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) has introduced a proposal in Congress to give home buyers a tax credit of $15,000, to be distributed over a three-year period. Property purchases by owner-occupiers that close between March 2008 and February 2009 would qualify for the incentive, which Isakson said will stimulate new demand for homes. Why should Indian pitches change?
    2007-12-03 12:42:39
I would like to know why these ex-players want the Indian pitches to favour bounce and movement and not be slow as they have been for like forever. Every country has its own identity and for India its that the pitches support spin and are slow. So why should we abandon our identity and copy [...]...

Local Prospect Pitches Well in Debut
    2007-05-04 22:05:15
I got an interesting press release in my email box yesterday. It was from my dad, about my 10-year old brother’s first start as a pitcher in his baseball league. He pitches for the Paradise Ridge Bulls, a team sponsored by my dad’s cattle business. Dain Armbrust started the game at pitcher and fanned the first three batters in the first inning. He then struck out two in the second, gave up a walk that stole second and third and came home on a throwing error to first. In 2 and 1/3 innings, Armbrust struck out 7 batters and gave up one earned run in the third inning. He walked 4 batters. A tremendous performance for the first timer that most certainly will have him “slotted for relief pitching as the season unfolds” according to Coach Bill Armbrust. Dain, who has 3 hits in 6 at bats in 10 innings saw only one at bat in which he ran the count to full with two foul balls and then advanced the runner to third on a hard hit grounder to a deep playing first baseman who out ran...
