Planet Pluto now change to Plutoid?
    2008-06-11 19:19:00
Pluto's years-long identity crisis just got more complex today. The International Astronomical Union has decided on the term "plutoid" as a name for Pluto and other objects that just two years ago were redefined as "dwarf planets."The surprise decision is unlikely to stem ongoing controversy and confusion, astronomers say. Sidestepping concerns of many astronomers worldwide, the IAU's decision, at a meeting of its Executive Committee in Oslo, comes almost two years after it stripped Pluto of its planethood and introduced the term "dwarf planets" for Pluto and other small round objects that often travel highly elliptical paths around the sun in the far reaches of the solar system."Most of the people in astronomy and planetary science community had no idea this was going to come out," said Hal Weaver of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. Weaver called the process that produced the new definition "sort of outdated, outmoded, archaic.""In this day and age of transparen

Matahari Naik dari Barat di Planet Marikh
    2008-06-05 04:06:00
Aku terbaca sebuah akhbar hari ni tentang berita yang mengejutkan aku. Planet Marikh telah berputar dari barat ke timur. Ini menyebabkan matahari akan naik dari sebelah barat dan turun di sebelah timur. Kemudian aku check laman web tu, memang ya. Ni aku qoute apa yang diaorang kata. Soon that steady eastward course is going to come to a stop. Actually, for the past few weeks, Mars has appeared to slow in its eastward trajectory, almost seeming to waver, as if it had become uncertain. Finally, on Oct. 1, it will pause and come to a halt. Then, for the next two months, Mars will reverse its course in the heavens and will move backward against the star background - toward the west - almost as if it had lost something. Then, on Dec. 10, it will pause again, before resuming its normal eastward movement. Puzzling the ancients All the planets exhibit this "retrograde motion" at one time or another. But for the longest time, the ancient astronomers were unable to come up with a satisfactory ex

My apologies for the on-off situation with Travel Notes lately. Our server is located at The Planet (Houston); where there have been major problems over the last few days. I believe they had an electrical blow-out.Not only were the servers affected with massive down-time (like two days) but the DNS servers were troubled too. Then just when things started to propagate again, the generator failed. The sites are working again (for now) but I was up until 4am trying to find another host. I've made a few contacts but still haven't moved anywhere.I need reliabilty fast, because apart from the TravelNotes.org website I also have a number of other domains on the server - 1800-WorldCup.com, 1800-Olympics.com, Travel-Write.com, 1800-France.com, 1800-UStravel.com and 1800-Canada.com among them.We did have a number of domains hosted elsewhere, until the hosts gave up the ghost recently. So basically I've had all my eggs in one basket; which is not a clever thing to do.1800-WorldCup.com is also coveri

Why is Pluto Not a Planet????
    2008-06-03 16:58:52
Most of you people might still be wondering as why "" Pluto is not a planet!!"" . Even I did and when I came across this article which I would like to share with you......... Pluto was first discovered in 1930 by Clyde W. Tombaugh at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff Arizona. Astronomers had long predicted that there would be a ninth planet in the Solar System, which they called Planet X. Only 22 at the time, Tombaugh was given the laborious task of comparing photographic plates. These were two images of a region of the sky, taken two weeks apart. Any moving object, like an asteroid, comet or planet, would appear to jump from one photograph to the next. After a year of observations, Tombaugh finally discovered an object in the right orbit, and declared that he had discovered Planet X. Because they had discovered it, the Lowell team were allowed to name it. They settled on Pluto, a name suggested by an 11-year old school girl in Oxford, England (no, it wasn't named after the Disney

Brain Sucking to Save the Planet
    2008-05-28 11:31:22
Everyone these days is concerned about energy. Or sex. Actually everyone has always been concerned about sex. But sex takes energy too. The big question is where do we get more sex? Er... energy. I've been considering this in between thinking about sex and I believe I've found a new and heretofore untapped source of energy.Actually the idea came as a result of a datum provided to me by my twelve year old daughter. If that alone isn't enough to assure you of the veracity of the information, I will reassure you further by telling you that she got this fact from a copy of Uncle John's Bathroom Reader, a well respected and peer-reviewed research publication for those of us who spend a great deal of our R&D budget on extra-plush toilet paper. The "It's a Funny Thing..." Research Command Center.Anyway, what she told me was that the average human brain produces enough electricity to power a ten watt light bulb.Isn't that amazing? If you screwed a ten watt bulb into your head, well, yo

Planet in Peril – the documentary
    2008-05-22 10:23:58
I happened to rent this documentary, as I do not watch mainstream television and wanted to see what they had to say about climate change. I like to watch these kinds of documentaries, to get tips and hints on what I can to do in my small way to help.Well, wouldn’t you know it – I come away from this documentary with something completely different. And now I’m wondering if it’s our plant in peril or us?Mother Earth seems to be very a very resilient and resourceful plant. I find that she has had no less than 5 mass extinctions since her creation mostly due to cyclical ice ages and just her volcanic rumblings and tectonic plate moves. According to some experts in the field, what we are experiencing with sunspots and earth changes now ~ might actually be a readily predictable ice age ~ one that has repeated itself every 10,000 years on her surface.I digress though, what I wanted to talk about was plastic. You know, that stuff we use to store just about everything in including wat

Grass-Fed Beef is Better-Fed, Better for You, Better for the Planet
    2008-05-21 00:09:00
Grass is the natural food for cattle – not grain, which is difficult for cattle to digest and can necessitate the use of antibiotics. The introduction of even a little grain into the cattle's diet diminishes the quality of the beef, reducing both health benefits and the real beef flavor. Most beef in most supermarkets and butchers comes from gigantic industrialized meat processors, who are more concerned with their bottom line than with raising healthy cattle in humane ways. They pack cattle into feedlots where the animals are fed grain laced with antibiotics, hormones and steroids so that they grow bigger faster and can withstand the cramped, inhumane environment. Even some so-called "grass-fed" brands can be "finished" on grain to produce rapid weight gain before market. For the best health of humans and cows the cattle should be born, raised, and finished on a ranch, where they graze rotationally in open pastures on the tips of tall grass. Strangely enough, this sustainable approa

Eat For The Planet - Reduce Your Carbon Footprint Through Your Diet
    2008-05-17 07:10:33
While many people understand the impact their vehicle has on the environment, they rarely consider the impact their diet has. When one stops to consider that globally automobiles produce 10% of all CO2 emissions and livestock produce 18% of all CO2 emissions it is easy to see the importance of an environmentally friendly diet.Evaluating Your Carbon FootprintYour personal carbon footprint measures how many pounds of global warming causing CO2 you produce annually through activities in your daily life. Once you understand your personal carbon footprint and its implications on the environment at large, most people begin to wonder what can they do to reduce their footprint?According to the United States Department of Energy, the average American produces about 20 tons or 40,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. How does your carbon footprint compare to the national average?Using Your Diet to Reduce Your Carbon FootprintWhen you consider the global environmental cost of livestock the impl

    2008-05-16 02:10:34
Via: IBM Press Room - IBM launches PowerUp, a new free 3D multiplayer virtual science game for the classroomIBM is launching a free multiplayer online game, PowerUp, challenging teenagers to help save the planet "Helios" from ecological disaster. The game is part of IBM's TryScience initiative and will be launched at Engineer's Week 2008 opening on February 16 in Washington, D.C. The game, which can be played alone or together, features a planet in near ecological ruin where three exciting missions for solar, wind and water power must be solved before sandstorms, floods or SmogGobs thwart the rescue. As co-chair of this year’s Engineer’s Week, an annual effort to promote engineering careers to students across the world, IBM devised the 3D virtual game to engage kids and educators in engineering, energy, and diversity awareness. Two hundred young people, between the ages of 12 and 16, helped create PowerUp, providing input and advice to IBM creators. The TryScience team from the New

Spanish researchers discovered smallest extrasolar planet MADRID – Spanish astronomers Wednesday announced the discovery of the smallest planet discovered to date outside the solar system, located 30 light years from earth. The planet, "GJ 436T", was detected through a new technique which "will allow us to discover in less than 10 years the first planet resembling earth in terms of mass and orbit," said Ignasi Ribas of Spain's CSIC scientific research institute. It was discovered by a team led by Ribas through its gravitational pull on other planets already discovered around the same star in the constellation of Leo. "GJ 436T" has a mass five times the size of Earth, which makes it the smallest extrasolar planet among the roughly 300 identified so far, Ribas said in announcing the discovery. He said the new planet is uninhabitable due to the distance that separates it from its star, which is far less than that between the earth and the sun. To sustain life, a planet must have a mass

    Encounter Fez with Lonely Planet
    2008-04-04 09:33:00
Lonely Planet's Fez Encounter 1 is hot off the press and is already proving a hit with visitors, discovered Lumen, who caught up with Steph and Tim Newton at Cafe Clock. The Newtons of Ipswich arrived in Morocco well equipped with a copy of Fez Encounter 1, just launched at the end of March. They'd come all the way from their home town by train, an interesting (and environmentally friendly) way to travel. Staying at Dar el Hana, they had already visited Seffarine Square, the Nejjarine Museum and the snail stall on the corner of Derb el Horra on their first full day in Fez. Tim and Steph loved the pocket-size book, saying that the maps are excellent, especially the pull-out one that's a convenient size. They found the ideas for itineraries very helpful and manageable. And of course, they'd been following The View from Fez before their holiday. The Fez Encounter guide covers four neighbourhoods in the city: the Medina, the Andalous Quarter, Fes el-Jdid (incluiding the Mellah, the former Je

News: The cost of saving the planet: US$190 billion.
    2008-03-17 15:11:36
What would it cost to wipe out world poverty, guarantee universal health care, stabilise population growth and roll back the ravages of global warming?About $190 billion a year, or the equivalent of a third of U.S. annual military expenditure, says Lester Brown, a prominent environmental economist, in his new book."Once you accept that climate change, population growth, spreading water shortages, rising food prices are threats to our security, it changes your whole way of thinking about how you use public resources."From eradicating adult illiteracy to restoring fisheries and stabilising water tables, the head of the Earth Policy Institute think tank in Washington calculates the cost of saving civilisation in a new edition of his best-selling "Plan B". Lost Planet: Colonies achievements leaked, more info coming soonFiled under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action Some games seem destined for pre-announcement leaks. Add to that list Lost Planet: Colonies, the supposed next entry in Capcom's third-person action series. First came name drops by both the German ratings board and the ESRB. Now, more embarrassingly, comes a full list of Xbox 360 achievements for the game, before the game has even been officially announced.360sync stumbled across the achievements, which they were later asked by Capcom to remove. We've confirmed that more information will be made available about the title next week, which leaves us plenty of time to speculate. The impressive list of achievements hints at a full single player campaign, as well as a bevy of multiplayer modes, leading us to believe that this may very well be a retail title after all, and not simply a downloadable spin-off. Check out the full list of achievements after the break.[Via X3F]Continue r

Movie Review: Planet of the Apes (2001)

Starring:Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, Estella Warren, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Kris KristoffersonDirector:Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Big Fish)MPAA Rating:PG-13 for some sequences of action/violence.Release Date:July 2001Synopsis:After flying through a space worm hole, astronaut Leo Davidson crashes on a planet where simians rule over humans. Aided and abetted by a sympathetic chimpanzee, Leo leads a small band of rebels against their captors. My Two Cents:I can’t remember how old I was when I watched the original version of Planet of the Apes, but it blew my mind. It was depressing as hell, but I could tell it was a great movie and that not all movies had a happy ending. This is a movie that didn’t need a remake, but there was a brand new generation of movie lovers that had only heard about the Planet of the Apes series, but not actually watched them. Tim Burton was the man chosen for this project and instead of a remake he decided t

The Greatest Wine on the Planet
    2008-02-13 23:52:00
Château Cheval Blanc, which dates back to the 1830s, is located in Bordeaux's Saint-Émilion appellation, on the right bank of the Gironde River. Although Saint-Émilion is mainly Merlot country, Cheval Blanc normally contains a high percentage of Cabernet Franc, which has always made for a very distinctive wine. That's because the '47 Cheval is probably the most celebrated wine of the 20th century. It is the wine every grape nut wants to experience before he dies, a wine that even the most jaded aficionados will travel thousands of miles to taste.

Dojo update: Distant PlanetFiled under: News, Screens We've already been introduced to Olimar and his Pikmin buddies and shown the kind stuff they can pull off when working together, so today's update focuses on Olimar's stage. Predictably enough, it's the very same planet that the intrepid astronaut was forced to make an emergency landing on in the Pikmin games. It comes complete with Onions that will produce items if you throw a numbered Pellet into them, as well as some pretty inclement weather. And if you're wondering what Onions and Pellets are, we advise you go hunt down a copy of Pikmin or Pikmin 2. No, seriously, do -- you won't regret it for a moment.Incidentally, taunting a Bulborb many times your size by standing on its snout is not wise.Gallery: SSBB gallery threeGallery: SSBB gallery twoPermalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments Ads by Google Link - Comments - Chris Greenhough - Tue, 15 Jan 2008 17:00:00 GMT - Feed (9 subs) dojo olimar pikmin smash-bros-brawl ssbb Sent using SendMeRss.com. Wild Planet Hyper DashThis a great game for both children and adults. I bought it for my nephew who is 6 and the whole family played with it for hours. It is a dynamic game that helps improve coordination. It accepts up to 8 players. There are four different games included with 4 levels. Players must follow the instructions given by ajoistick-like device and strike the targets (red, yellow, orange, green and blue) in the specified manner (sometimes colors are mentioned, sometimes numbers, or mathematical operations, for example 5-4). The player who completes the sequence in the least amount of time wins. The winner is announced at the end of each round. My only complaint is there is no volume control and sometimes the instructions given may be hard to hear, especially if used outdoors.More information>>>
