    2008-05-22 00:03:32
At 8,586 meters, Mt. Kanchenjunga is the world’s third highest mountain, and only 10-20 meters behind K2 in Pakistan for second place. Spending additional time in the shadow of the Himalaya was a big reason for my decision to enter India via Darjeeling. On my second morning, I awoke around 5:30am, saw blue skies [...]

    Drainage in Banana Plantation
    2007-12-14 20:02:00
Drainage canals are constructed purposely to bring down water table to the desired level when it is high enough to cause physiological damage to the plant. The removal of excess water can be done through construction of an ditch or close ditch.Drainage Objectives:With proper installed drainage, the following benefits maybe realized.1.Removal of excess water, since this will lead to physiological defect on the banana2.Improve decay and nitrification with favorable temperature and supply of oxygen, there is more intense bacterial activity and combined with other factors results in better soil granulations.3.Increased leaching of salt in some areas where saline water is a problem, good drainage practice prevents accumulation of salts and prevents its upward rise to the soil surface during excessive evaporation.4.Minimized soil erosion and gullying. Plantation & Gardens a bountiful bit of old Hawaii
    2007-08-26 03:43:00
Kaneohe, Hawaii - Patsy Fong is sorting ti leaves, hundreds of glossy green leaves piled according to size and quality. She works quickly, seemingly without thought, while carrying on conversations with those arriving at the open-air pavilion of the visitor center at Senator Fong's Plantation & Gardens for a lei-making class. Clearly she has done this before. Important plant, the ti, sacred to Laka, goddess of the hula. One hundred ti leaves add up to a hula skirt. Wrapped in a piece of cloth it will last for years, aging to the rich brown seen in old Hawaii drawings.

Kauai & Lanai: Nostalgic plantation cottages
    2007-07-29 01:07:00
If your image of Hawaii includes waving fields of sugar cane and juicy pineapple plants, you’ll love staying in a historic plantation cottage. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens - Charleston, SC
    2007-05-05 16:17:00
My Trip to Magnolia Plantation: Last week a good friend of mine had family in town from Virginia.  Among the must see sights in Charleston, Magnolia Plantation was on the agenda.  I, being a resident of Charleston, had never been to "one of the Top 25 Most Visited Houses in America" before and I jumped at the chance to accompany them. We arrived on a beautiful morning to a friendly staff and reasonable admission rates.  Parking was free and not terribly difficult.  The 3 guided tour options were Nature Boat Ride, Magnolia Plantation House and Nature Train.  We opted for the first two and skipped the train to take a walk in The Audubon Swamp Garden.  The Boat tour was very comfortable.  The open pontoon boat glided along the canals and we were given a concise but not riveting description of the history of the 150 acre rice field.  During the hour long tour we saw many different species of birds and a few alligators!  It was very en

    2007-02-15 07:00:00
nupgeDole is the largest exporter of flowers in Latin America and accounts for 20% of Colombia's flower production. The Dole Splendor Flowers Plantation in Colombia has fired nearly 200 flower workers the weekend before Valentine's Day. “Dole's message to flower workers in Colombia is a cruel reminder of the company's blatant disregard for the rights of its workers,? said Charity Ryerson, U.S./Labor Education in the Americas Project Campaign Coordinator.
