    2008-08-15 21:31:01
Metabolix, Inc. has recently announced that in recently-completed greenhouse trials, switchgrass plants engineered using Metabolix multi-gene expression technology produced significant amounts of PHA bioplastics in leaf tissues. This result is the first expression of a new functional multi-gene pathway in switchgrass, and demonstrates the capabilities for maximizing the potential of biomass crops for both bioplastics [...] ...

    Hydropower Plants
    2008-07-18 23:36:14
There is also power found in water and that process is referred to as hydropower. It can create much more energy at one time than either solar power or wind power. This is due to the fact that water is so dense. Therefore it only takes a little bit of water to create some power. [...]...

Over Populated Deer with Too Many Deer Might change Forests Plants, more Diseases, the Future
    2008-07-18 10:26:25
I am in a state we are over populated by deer with too many. I was talking to a guy today telling me the reason the forest are having a hard time growing back is because of too many deer. That the reason is that they eat all the baby trees then they never get a chance to grow again. Along with trees disappearing with being cut down then not being planted back all over again. With the increased deer herd in the forest that it is also killing off wild ginseng as well as other plant species. I wond...

Guidelines for Clinical Evaluation of Herbal Remedies and Medicinal Plants
    2008-06-19 16:09:03
For the herbal remedies and medicinal plants that are to be clinically evaluated for use in the Allopathic System and which may later be used in allopathic hospitals, the procedures laid down by the office of the Drugs Controller General of India for allopathic drugs should be followed. This does not pertain to guidelines issued for clinical evaluation of Ayurveda, Siddha or Unani drugs by experts in hospitals and clinics. All the general principles of clinical trials pertain also to herbal remedies. However, when clinical trials of herbal drugs used in recognized Indian Systems of Medicine and Homeopathy are to be undertaken in Allopathic Hospitals, association of physicians from the concerned system as co-investigators/collaborators/members of the expert group is desirable for designing and evaluating the study.Important Points:The herbal products can belong to either of the three categories given belowA lot is known about the use of a plant or its extract in the ancient Ayurveda, Si...

Honda to suspend car output at more China plants
    2008-06-11 03:18:00
Japan's No.2 automaker had suspended production at two major car factories and an engine plant in the southern city of Guangzhou due to flooding from heavy rains. It said last week the factory held with Dongfeng in the central Chinese city of Wuhan could also be suspended in the event of a supply bottleneck. [ID:nT251332] The engine factory in Guangzhou, also owned jointly with Dongfeng, supplies some engine parts to the Wuhan factory, which builds CR-V sport utility vehicles and Civic sedan models. Honda said it was unclear how much damage, if any, the facilities in Guangzhou suffered from the flooding. The engine factory and one of the car factories were suspended for four days last week. The other car plant was undamaged but shuttered for two days since engine supply was disrupted. The two car factories, run jointly with Guangzhou Automobile Group Co, build the Accord, Odyssey, Fit and City models and have a combined annual production capacity of 360,000 vehicl...

Chrysler ties Toyota for most productive plants in North America
    2008-06-06 17:04:00
The Harbour Report released today reveals that the Big 3 gained major ground in closing the productivity gap with Japanese automakers building vehicles in North America last year. The report found that Chrysler had actually improved enough to tie Toyota as the most productive multi-plant manufacturer on the continent, with both automakers spending an average of 30.37 hours to build a vehicle. The most productive single plant in North America also belongs to Chrysler, as the once experimental Toledo Supplier Park takes just 13.57 labor hours to build a Jeep. For their parts, General Motors plants averaged 32.29 hours per vehicle and Ford plants averaged 33.88 hours per vehicle, both an improvement over last year's numbers. The news was not all good, however, as the report found that despite improving their productivity, the Big 3 are still unable to match the Japanese in profit made per vehicle. While Honda and Nissan earned $1,641 per vehicle built in North American last year and Toyot...

Toyota and Matsushita building new battery plants in Japan
    2008-05-28 13:06:00
If Toyota has any chance of meeting its stated goal of selling a million hybrids per year within the next decade, it's going to need lots and lots of batteries. Along with its partner, Matsushita, Toyota already has plants in operation to build the necessary nickel metal hydride battery packs, and one of those plants will be enlarged in order to meet capacity requirements. Two additional plants will also be built in Japan, one of which will begin production of the newer lithium ion batteries which are likely to be installed in future Lexus hybrids and Prius sedans. Toyota's full investment in these three battery plants is said to be roughly 20 billion yen, which is equal to 192 million dollars.Toyota's dominance in the hybrid vehicle market is going to be challenged as fuel prices continue to rise. Recently, along with its partner NEC, Nissan announced that it was building a new plant to build advanced lithium ion packs for electric vehicles and hybrids. Additionally, General Motors i...

    Plants/Manufacturing, GM, GMC, UAW/Unions
    2008-05-24 08:56:00
With closure to the American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings strike in sight, General Motors is pushing forward to resume production at the idled and slowed plants -- assuming UAW members approve a tentative contract later this week. As of Monday, the following plants were back in operation:Bay City, Mich. (engines, transmissions, components)Flint, Mich., North and South (engines, components)Livonia, Mich. (engines)Willow Run, Mich. (transmissions)Each week the strike has dragged out, GM has lost significant production (29,925 vehicles were lost in the week ending April 26 alone). If GM cannot boost additional manufacturing output, by the end of this week the total number of lost units could be as high as 285,503. Even if the American Axle strike is settled, the UAW is still striking at GM's Fairfax asse...

    Floating pond plants
    2008-05-20 04:16:00
No matter how enchanting they may look, even the most captivating floating plants are prone to invasive proportions. Luckily, I don't have that problem as my two ponds actually hardly fit into pond proportions, and the second one is more of a puddle. I have envisioned a proper pond in the back yard as a thing to do sometime in the future but so far it has merely remained a vision.Apart from the miniature water lilies, a few types of horsetail, marsh marigolds, marsh spurge and sweet flag, I also keep a few floating plants. And having in mind that floating plants are often not winter hardy and are in need of great amounts of light and warm temperature, not many survive (some say that they are not even worth all the bother of trying to overwinter them; I never thought of it like that, but keeping them in the basement tanks with low light, only a few lucky ones survive). While rummaging through the nursery yesterday, I've noticed a new arrival of water plants from Holland. It was time to...

[Video] Cleve Backster - Plants Can Sense Human Intention
    2008-05-08 11:35:06
There is a video at youtube with the title "Cleve Baxter - Plants can sense human intention". The info of the video states:This is a video of Cleve Baxter, a polygraph scientist who did the controversial experiment with plants and animal cells. In the 60s, he decided on impulse to attach his polygraph electrodes to the now-famous dracaena in his office, then water the plant and see if the leaves responded (p. 4). Finding that the plant indeed reacted to this event, he decided to see what would happen if he threatened it, and formed in his mind the idea of lighting a match to the leaf where the electrodes were attached. And that was when something happened that forever changed Baxter's life and ours. For the plant didn't wait for him to light the match. It reacted to his thoughts!Through further research, Baxter found that it was his intent, and not merely the thought itself, that brought about this reaction. He also discovered that plants were aware of each other, mourned the death of an...

Transgenic Plants Are Going To Reshape Agriculture
    2008-01-18 04:30:00
A transgenic plant contains a gene or genes which have been artificially inserted in the plant instead of pollination. The inserted gene sequence may come from another distinct plant, or from a completely different species for example, transgenic Bt corn, which produces its own insecticide, contains a gene from a bacterium.Transgenic plant technology enables plant breeders to generate more useful and productive crop varieties containing new combinations of genes. With the help of this technology plant breeders have been able to generate disease resistant, high yielding and climatic change tolerant plantsTransgenic plant technology is surely going to revolutionize the agricultural sector. The National Institute of Science and Media has wide-range of books on biotechnology and other branches of science.Joel Ball, the lead author on the various titles published under the NISM name is a renowned figure in the scientific and publishing circle....

One generation plants the trees, in their shade another generation rests
    2008-01-08 12:38:46
On the way to the ward, I saw an interesting quote. Apparently there were 2 people who planted some bamboo at the old Toa Payoh hospital. These bamboo trees were then transplanted into the Changi General Hospital and a quote was put up.It read, " We should each plant a tree in our lifetime even if we may not have a chance to sit under it. One generation plants the trees, in their shade another generation rests. 前人栽树, 后人乘凉".It was not difficult to locate the bed in the ward. Grandma's moaning attracted our attention. In most of the beds, the aged patients were accompanied by maids. Ours too. It must be tough to for these underpaid maids to stay by the patients round the clock to attend to them, especially so for my maid, Wati. She had been with Grandma for 2 years. Ironically, she spent more time with Grandma than most of Grandma's descendants. Now, Grandma only responds to Wati and my Aunt. Wati had very much wanted to return to her Indonesia hometown, but lamented that she couldn't bear to leave Grandma.Do values erode over time? Or is reality cruel? One of my Uncle wept when he saw Grandma bedridden. He got a lecture from Wati. All this while when he visited Grandma, he would send Wati to buy him coffee and not paying her. Furthermore, he practises sophisticated magic tricks -- vanishing when money is needed for Grandma's healthcare. It hurts when one can't rise up from one's generation to yell at the senior generation. Something hurts more at the moment.Grandma couldn't recognise me anymore. Grandma couldn't recognise the grandson that she doted and cared for for more than 17 years. Her eosophagus was infected and she could not take in food and water. The doctor's response was to add more antibiotics. Seems like the concentration of antibiotics never reach a peak. I hope it never would.Soon came more visitors -- my Paternal Aunt's daughter-in-law with her 2 daughters. The 2 girls brought some colours to the eitherwise dull and gloom hosp...

A Gardener Plants Seeds for the Future
    2007-11-20 20:45:00
There is a man by the name of Catalino Tapia of Redwood City, California, who came to the United States, from Mexico, at age 20 with $6 in his pocket. Over the past 43 years, he has worked as a baker and a machine operator. His education never went beyond 6th grade. However, through hard work he eventually built a successful gardening business. He married and raised two children. One son graduated from Boalt School of Law at UC Berkeley and is now an attorney in Los Angeles. This story is not about this young immigrant’s rise to success, although it easily could have been. It is about a man who sees the inimitable value of education and his philanthropic vision. Mr. Tapia, with his son’s legal help, founded The Bay Area Gardener’s Foundation. It’s purpose: to give college scholarships to low-income students from the Bay area. He is a man of modest means, and from what I gleaned from an interview I recently listened to, of modest personality, as well. He believes “it is his duty to pass along the prosperity he has earned, to draw community members together for a shared goal and to be accountable for the well-being of the next generation.” Hmmm. His Board consists of a dozen other immigrant gardeners and other community members who see the value in helping struggling students take the edge off some of their financial responsibilities by offering funds for books, transportation and other incidental expenses -- costs that may not amount to a lot for some, but for others it is the difference of working an extra job to raise these funds. Any student who has at least 2.5 GPA is eligible, even if he/she is an undocumented alien. Everyone on the Board agrees that, “"no matter what, they're going to have their education. So even though they don't have their papers and even though they might not be able to get a job with their Social Security number, no one will be able to take away their education."The main group that the Foundation has reached so far has been ...

First Chrysler plants reject and accept contract
    2007-10-19 18:15:26
Workers at the last of the Chrysler plants won’t vote on the tentative agreement between the UAW and the company until this coming Wednesday. But, the outcome of the first voting on Thursday was mixed, with workers at Kenosha, Wisconsin accepting the contract by a big margin and workers at the Fenton, Missouri plant rejecting it, also by a big margin.   Workers at the Chrysler pick-up truck plant in Fenton, which is near St. Louis, rejected the contract on Thursday. When the vote was tallied late Thursday night, two-thirds of the employees had voted and of that number, 80% voted against it. The president of the Fenton local plant indicated that the contract failed by a larger margin than he had expected, suggesting that a vote against the contract was anticipated, at least by the local leaders.   Things went better for the deal in Kenosha, south of Milwaukee. 78% of the vote in Kenosha was in favor of ratification. That plant, however, employs only 800 workers, vs. the 2,100 employed at Fenton. There are a total of 45,000 UAW members at Chrysler.   But the Fenton vote may be an ominous sign for the remaining votes. The Fenton plant is one of the six plants which is guaranteed production during the life of the contract, in its case getting the new Dodge Ram pick-up truck to replace its production of the current version of that vehicle. In all, the contract provides for closure of only five current plants, one at least of which is to be replaced with a new facility and two of which are not assembly plants, but are a parts distribution center and test facility.   For the contract to be ratified, it must get a majority vote of the total number of UAW members voting. A local rejecting the contract has no significance, by itself. Four locals voted against the recently ratified GM contract.   Nonetheless, the Chrysler pact has been the target of a serious campaign against ratification led by none other than the leader of the UAW team that negotiated it. Claiming that the contract fails to provide sufficient job security guarantees, opponents of the contract have also criticized health care benefit give-backs contained in the contract, as well as the VEBA negotiated between the union and UAW and the two-tier wage structure for new hires in non-core positions.    Job security concerns among Chrysler workers are likely to be heightened by rumors surfacing yesterday that the company is about to terminate as many as five models currently in production. The rumors apparently started after remarks made by Chrysler officials to a meeting of dealers in Las Vegas. Hence, the information is seen as credible, and the expectation is that slower-selling models are likely to be quickly discontinued.  That could mean job losses in the immediate future at Chrysler, which may make some workers particularly receptive to another criticism of the proposed contract: no priority is given to current workers for future job openings.   UAW officials had hoped to have voting on the contract completed by Sunday, but local unions did not follow through. Partly, this was a question of logistics: five Chrysler plants are currently in the middle of a two-week shut down to trim inventory, so it is not as easy to arrange for all workers to vote as it would be if they were all coming to work.   Getting the Chrysler contract ratified is critical to the UAW’s ability to begin formal negotiations at Ford, which are currently on hold. In the even that the contract at Chrysler were to be rejected, it is not clear whether the union would then proceed to negotiate the Ford contract, or whether it would instead reenter negotiations with Chrysler....

Pollution from U.S. coal-fired power plants
    2007-08-09 23:32:00
Ontario has launched a second official complaint with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, saying rule changes for American coal-fired power plants will spew even more harmful pollution across the border. The province filed comments Tuesday arguing the U.S. plans will only relax the rules, allowing out-dated plants to operate longer hours without installing modern pollution controls. “Air pollution from the U.S. coal-fired power plants continues to harm the health, environment and economy of Ontario,” said Environment Minister Laurel Broten. ...

AMERICA: Nuclear Energy, Big operator of plants working on a federal application
    2007-07-02 04:58:00
Exelon Nuclear has selected two sites in southeastern Texas as possible locations for a new nuclear plant. Illinois-based Exelon Nuclear, which operates the largest number of nuclear plants in the nation, said it is preparing a federal application that would allow construction and operation of a plant should the company decide to build one. The primary prospective site is a tract about 10 miles south of Collegeport in Matagorda County. A secondary site is about 20 miles south of Victoria in Victoria County. Two potential nuclear sites chosenExelon said it expects to submit the application to the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission in November 2008. It expects the application process to cost about $23 million. For the next 18 months, the company will work through an extensive process with the regulatory commission before the application is submitted, Exelon Nuclear spokesman Craig Nesbit said Thursday. After that, the NRC will take three to four years to evaluate the application. ...

Nissan Install Solar Panels on Spanish Plants to Save CO2
    2007-06-11 19:09:00
In an effort to both save some euros off the electricity bill and some CO2 from hitting the environment, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd, will install 606 solar panels at its Barcelona (Spain) vehicle plant by the end of this summer. which will cover a surface of 3,000 square-metres and generate 308,000 kWh of electricity per year, which helps them reduce CO2 emissions by 110 tons.Nissan is also installed a similar layout on its other plant in Spain, in Ávila this summer, 732 solar panels resulting in savings of 267 tons of CO2 emissions every year. But not only Spain is getting renewable energy to power the plants, Nissan is also using renewable energy at its Sunderland vehicle plant in the UK, where it has erected six wind turbines good for 5 percent of the plant's electricity which cuts CO2 emissions by 3,300 tons a year. These interventions are being held under Nissan's Green Program 2010, which expectations are to lower CO2 emissions 7 percent from 2005 levels.Recent Posts:+ Ford C-MAX Sp...

UK: Blair commits to nuclear future as plans for five new power plants are revealed
    2007-05-25 00:35:00
by Colin BrownRead more | Digg story A blueprint for a new generation of power stations was revealed yesterday as Tony Blair committed Britain to a nuclear component in energy supply. The Government announced a five-month consultation exercise on its plans for new nuclear plants by the private sector but a private consultants' report for the Department of Trade and Industry raised suspicions that the consultation is a sham. Critics called the consultation a "farce" and nuclear power would be a "dangerous, dirty white elephant". The report says new nuclear plants should be built predominantly in the South-east where the main demand for energy exists. Many of the plants are on the coast, and could be at risk of flooding as a result of climate change causing a catastrophic rise in sea levels. But the report by Jackson Consulting says higher defences could be built to avoid coastal sites being ruled out. The engineers...
