On To Philly With A Victory For The Sox...Back to Boston For The Celtics, With The Lakers In Tow...A US Open Noon Playoff...Boston 9 Cincinnati 0
    2008-06-16 04:29:00
The Great American Ballpark is the home of the Cincinnati Reds. It's also a place, as the Boston Red Sox found out in a 9-0 defeat of those Reds, that's fairly easy to hit one out into the seats. Yesterday, without their two big sluggers, David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez, the visitors from Boston smashed four home runs. Jacoby Ellsbury, who set the Red Sox rookie record for steals in a season with 33, Justin Pedroia, the still white-hot JD Drew and Coco Crisp all went deep, and it led to a great offensive display for the world champions. It was the first time since '97 that the first three hitters in the Boston lineup hit taters. Who were they? Nomar, John Valentin and Connecticut's own (Too Big) Mo Vaughn. Outfielder Coco Crisp had this to say after the shutout ended..."We have a good hitting team," Crisp said. "Those guys make us better, no doubt. But without them, we were still able to put up some good runs. It shows that we can still play good ball as a team without the two superstars

    Playoff Predictions Update
    2008-05-31 01:51:00
A little over a month ago I posted my predictions for the entire NBA postseason. Usually, I'm way off on these things, case in point my failed NCAA brackets. However, this year I managed to screw myself over in a new way. I didn't bet on my picks.Sure, I didn't get any of the series lengths correct. And yes, I didn't do much in picking upsets. Regardless, I'm pretty proud of the fact I got every series correct leading up to the much ballyhooed Lakers-Celtics NBA Finals that I would say is going to be over in 5. Expect Kobe and the Lakers to be celebrating on their home court in a couple of weeks. They're that good.I wonder what kind of payoff I would have gotten from dropping a bet on my entire postseason predictions. It kind of sucks that for once in my life I was right about a sports prediction, but I got nothing from it. Although I suppose these playoffs were relatively predictable aside from the Boston-Detroit ECF, the Spurs-Suns first round series and the Spurs-Hornets 2nd round s

    NBA Playoff Thoughts
    2008-05-12 11:43:00
EASTERN CONFERENCE(2) Detroit Pistons vs (3) Orlando MagicPistons lead the series 3-1 (My Pick - Orlando over Detroit in 7 games)How do you really call this one? You had the shot that happened but shouldn't have counted. Chauncey Billups went down and the Pistons won anyway. Detroit flat out won Game 1. This series could go either way still.Jameer Nelson has said something that's usually reserved for Rasheed Wallace.I don't think the Magic have their "point guard of the future" on their current roster. This is Detroit's last deep run with this current group. Maybe they add somebody but I can see a trade coming in the near future. Joe Dumars is always ahead of the curve.Dwight Howard flashes but cannot yet sustain dominance for long stretches. He will eventually though. The Magic need to pay Turkoglu. 3 years/$30 million sounds about right. But his agent will look at his production vs the production of Rashard Lewis. Then he'll look at the contract the Magic gave Lewis. Turkoglu will cost

Friday Morning Flashback: 1999 AFC Divisional Playoff Game
    2008-05-09 12:09:08
Here's something fun to remember as you enjoy your friday     I remember being at this game.  I remember singing "goodbye" to Dan Marino.  I also remember the crushing disappointment of the next week as the Jaguars run the Super Bowl was thwarted by the Tennessee Titans.  I remember thinking back that this game was filled with hubris and that we paid for it over the next several seasons. Anyhow, I'm a bit under the weather this week.  I'll be back later this afternoon with possibly another interview. -Chris

    Basket europeo: scattano i playoff
    2008-04-30 03:27:57

76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Detroit Pounds Sixers in Game 5

Not much to say after getting manhandled like that. This was the first game in the series the 76ers looked like they were completely out of their league and had no shot of winning. 76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Philly Punches Back in Game 3
    2008-04-25 22:23:19
Where do you start when your team comes off a disappointing playoff loss and plays the best game you could have asked for? I am beyond proud of our Philadelphia 76ers after tonight's performance. The Sixers came out right from the tap and jumped all over the Detroit Pistons. They completely dominated every aspect of the game for 48 minutes. The result: a 95-75 dismantling of the Detroit Pistons. Game Notes This game was unlike either of the first two in that the Sixers finally maintained their great start. They opened up on a 6-0 run with 5 offensive rebounds in the first six minutes and never really looked back. A few things really stood out to me:

76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Detroit Takes Game 2
    2008-04-24 12:51:06
Guys, I need some help here. I had a championship basketball game last night at 8 p.m. in my winter bball league. Meaning I missed the entire first half and 3 minutes into the third quarter. What the hell happened? When I finally got in front of a TV, the score was 58-38 with about 9 minutes and some change left in the 3rd. Luckily we won our championship game so I wasn't as pissed as I would have been looking at the final score of 105-88. I can't exactly do a real game recap and analysis without watching the entire game, but looking at the boxscore, highlights and going through the play-by-play here are some thoughts: The Sixers needed to win some key battles that they clearly didn't last night.

Playoff Heart Attacks Are Probably Bad For Me
    2008-04-21 13:36:54
Even though I lambasted the Calgary Flames for failing to fail against the San Jose Sharks and get the Western Conference going into the second round of the playoffs, it's actually pretty nice to get a few days off from hockey. I'm not alone when I say that there were times during the first round series between the Avalanche and the Wild that I was close to full cardiac arrest.  Three overtimes in the first three games, and the Avs barely holding close leads in the final two games, had me suffering cold sweats, chest pains and a bizarre numbness in my left big toe which I still haven't figured out. All the symptoms were accounted for: Uncomfortable pressure, fullness, squeezing or pain in the center of the chest lasting more than a few minutes. Pain spreading to the shoulders, neck or arms. The pain may be mild to intense. It may feel like pressure, tightness, burning, or heavy weight. It may be located in the chest, upper abdomen, neck, jaw, or inside the arms or shoulders

76ers vs. Pistons Playoff Series: Philly Steals Game 1
    2008-04-20 21:19:21
Who would have thought after being down 15-points on the road, playing against a championship-caliber team, getting 4-16 shooting by our best player and having a roster filled with playoff newbies, the 76ers would be up 1-0 in their first round playoff series against the Detroit Pistons? Well, surprise, surprise, that's the unsettling reality everyone in Detroit must face, most importantly Flip Saunders and his "experienced" Piston players. In the first quarter the Sixers came out with tons of energy and attacked. After that initial burst it became clear Detroit was the more experienced team. They executed well on offense and looked under control at all times. What was also clear was that the Sixers had no plans of backing down. The Good

Cronin's Corner: 1958 Eastern Division Playoff
    2008-03-22 08:10:35
[EDITOR'S NOTE: George Cronin, one of the elder statesman of Big Blue View Nation, has been entertaining us with stories of yesteryear. This is his latest installment.] By George Cronin Playing at home and having already topped the Browns twice, the Giants were confident. There was also the fact that since the Browns entered the league in 1950, the Giants defense had more success vs. them than any other team. Steve Owen emphasized defense. When he retired, Tom Landry became Defensive Coordinator. His analytic skills gave Paul Brown fits. Cleveland's team's offense was a relentless machine. Landry recognized that, like all machines, it was predictable. Without computers to help him, no matter where the Browns were or what down it might be, he knew with a remarkable degree of accuracy what play Cleveland would run and how to mobilize his superb defenders to stop it. The Giants scored but one TD in the game, a dipsy doodle that involved a handoff from Conerly to Webster

Hoffman is key to Padres' playoff hopes
    2008-03-05 10:41:00
Trevor Hoffman has been so taken for granted that Padres’ fans may finally find out this season just how good he was.Hoffman, the all-time Major League Baseball saves leader, could be counted on about 90 percent of the time to hold any lead in the ninth inning. He proved human in his final two appearances of 2007.First, there was the triple by Milwaukee’s Tony Gwynn Jr. off Hoffman that prevented the Padres from clinching a playoff berth. Then, there was Hoffman giving up three runs to the Colorado Rockies in another game that could have propelled the Padres into the playoffs.Either these were two blips on Hoffman’s great career, or they were a sign of things to come. When Hoffman blew consecutive saves in potential playoff-clinching games, San Diego fans got a taste of what people in many others cities throughout baseball experience.Nowadays, the hardest thing for a pitcher to do is record the final three outs.Nobody has been better at that than Hoffman. But if he slips at all from

Capitals Excitedly Surging Toward Major Playoff Disappointment
    2008-02-07 14:39:00
You know that now-old comparison between arguing on the Internet and running in the Special Olympics? Well, the same can be applied to winning the Southeast Conference (and its associated top-3 seed in the Eastern Conference playoff bracket). The Capitals have improved significantly, as of late, and that's gotten the heads a-talkin'. The local boys are seeing stars. The big guns are lining up with pats on the back and whatnot. The bad news is, it's all going to end with a serious let-down.Remember the Penguins last season? They made the playoffs with Crosby at the helm, only to get royally stomped in the first round when it dawned on them that they were just a mediocre team with a few really talented, inexperienced little kids in the lineup. Before their implosion, everyone was already convinced it was Their Year. Uh, no.Maybe it's just me. Maybe a team still barely above .500 with less than 60 points in the standings and less than 30 games left to play, is destined to win the

FBR Open - Holmes wins in a playoff
    2008-02-03 18:31:34
American JB Holmes had back-to-back birdies on the same hole just 30 minutes apart to edge Phil Mickelson in a playoff and capture his second FBR Open title in three years.Holmes birdied the 18th hole to force a playoff then defeated Mickelson with by draining a seven-foot putt on the first hole of the playoff.Holmes also won this event in 2006. Asked to compare the two wins he said this one really tested his determination."It is a little different," said Holmes, who shot a 71 Sunday to finish at 14-under 270. "I won the first time here and then everybody questioned why I couldn't win again."This one is more redemption to prove everyone was wrong."Holmes watched his seven-foot putt sail straight in then stepped forward and punched his right fist in the air.He sank a 10-foot birdie putt on 18 in regulation to pull even with Mickelson who started the day four shots adrift of Holmes. My ThoughtsA really great win that many people wont even have seen because of an overlap with the superbow

    NFL Playoff Preview
    2008-01-11 23:04:00
Green Bay Packers v. Seattle SeahawksIs there any sporting event that is better than a January playoff game at Lambeau Field. I'd be hard pressed to think of one. With homefield advantage, many people are regarding the Packers as a virtual lock to advance to the NFC Championship game, but don't sleep on the Seahawks just yet. Seattle has an excellent passing attack that has challenged some of the league's best secondaries. When Green Bay faced Dallas back in November, Tony Romo and Terrell Owens had a big day against the Packers' defensive back so there is a possibility that Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck might also be able to exploit some mismatches. On the other side of the ball, Green Bay should be more than capable of scoring a bunch of points. With the sudden rise of Ryan Grant, the Packers now have one of the most complete offenses in the entire NFL. While not starting until mid-October, Grant was still able to rush for nearly 1,000 yards. With Favre having a career year, the Packers should be able to take care of business at home. Packers 34-21 New England Patriots v. Jacksonville JaguarsDon't get caught up in all of the Jacksonville hype just yet. While they are certainly a pretty solid team, the Jags have too many holes to defeat an undefeated Patriots team.Last week against Pittsburgh, they showed some difficulty getting their offense going and playing with a big lead. If they are going to have a chance at upsetting the undefeated Patriots, David Garrard must be extremely efficient and sustain long drives that will keep Tom Brand and Randy Moss off the field. It also doesn't help that they're missing some crucial defensive personnel, and are not fully equipped to play the Patriots for all four quarters. Patriots 38-17.Indianapolis Colts v. San Diego ChargersWhen these teams faced off back in October, the Chargers caught Peyton Manning without his regular personnel (Dallas Clark, Marvin Harrison, and Reggie Wayne) and picked him six times.       Well, went 3-1 for the Wild Card Weekend, with Seattle being the only team that kept me from being perfect. Can Chargers repeat road playoff history?
    2008-01-10 18:50:00
Precedence says the Chargers have a good chance of beating the Indianapolis Colts on the road Sunday in the AFC Divisional playoffs.Thirteen seasons ago, the top-seeded Pittsburgh Steelers rested many of their regular players in the season finale but still barely lost to the Chargers, 37-34.Based on that game, the “experts” knew that the Steelers (with all hands on board) would crush the Chargers in Pittsburgh for the AFC Championship.Guess what? The Chargers won, 17-13, to advance to their only Super Bowl appearance.Fast forward to this season …The Colts were missing six regulars with injuries (and two more left the game hurt) when they barely lost to the Chargers in San Diego, 23-21, on Nov. 11.Now, Indianapolis is the same 8 1/2-point favorite that Pittsburgh was when it lost to the Chargers in January 1995.The Colts are expected to have starters Marvin Harrison and Anthony Gonzalez at wide receiver, tight end Dallas Clark, tackles Tony Ugoh and Ryan Diem and linebackers Tyjuan Hagler and Freddy Keiaho ready to go this time. All either were injured or left the game early when the Chargers beat Indianapolis earlier this season.Based on these players’ return, the Colts should win easily this week … just as Pittsburgh should have been victorious 13 years ago in the AFC Championship. That being said:This weekend’s predictions:Colts 27, Chargers 17New England 35, Jacksonville 20Dallas 31, New York Giants 27Green Bay 21, Seattle 13

Giants get no love in comparison of playoff teams
    2008-01-10 16:16:57
According to an ESPN Insider list, the New York Giants are the worst of the eight remaining playoff teams. And here I thought the Giants had been getting some love from the media all week. I guess the Giants still have to convince people that they are, indeed, a very good football team. The graphic below shows the results of the rankings, compiled by Scouts Inc.

Fearless Playoff Predicitions - Divisional Round
    2008-01-10 06:38:11
A 3-1 wild-card round has me feeling confident as we head into a solid Week 2 in the NFL Playoffs.  Whether you are for or against the Patriots, their pursuit of perfect is must see TV, and a third matchup of the season between the Cowboys and Giants might be the best game of the weekend.  Fun, fun, fun.  Let's break it down, and as always, feel free to give your thoughts as well.... SATURDAY GAMES - Seattle Seahawks @ Green Bay Packers -- We all know my deep, heart-felt feelings about Brett Favre.  That said, he has had a great season and is a major reason the Pack is back in the NFC.  The bigger reason is a solid defense that has been rebuilt from the ground up by Tim Thompson and Mike McCarthy to be the calling card of the Pack for when Favre does finally decide to hang them up.  For Seattle, they could easily be the darkhorse of the NFC, and no one knows Lambeau Field in January better than Mike Holmgren.  The Seahawks are always prepared in the

Tip of the Hat/Wag of the Finger: Playoff Edition
    2008-01-07 19:05:11
Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger As we start our look toward next week and the New England Patriots, it's important to take a second and recognize some of the better (and worse) performances by our Jaguars on Saturday.  While the game was nowhere near perfect by any stretch of the imagination, there are some very notable performances on both sides of the ball that merit recognition. Wag of the Finger: First off, a huge tip of the hat to Derek Landri for a standout performance while replacing John Henderson, who left the game early with a strained hamstring.  Landri pulled a trifecta on defense with a sack, a fumble recovery, and an interception.  His interception of Ben Roethlisberger was fantastic as he pulled the ball right out of thin air and made a great play to catch the ball.  Defensive Tackles aren't supposed to get interceptions like that, and rookie 5th round picks aren't supposed to have their first playoff game be the best of the season, but Landri

    NFL Wild Card Playoff Preview
    2008-01-04 10:19:00
Seattle Seahawks v. Washington RedskinsAfter four consecutive victories the Washington Redkins are one of the hottest teams in all of the NFL and poised for a big playoff run. Their opponents, the Seattle Seahawks, have been a little up-and-down as of late. They lost to the horrible Panthers and Falcons this month and pilled on wins again lowly NFC West foes to win their weak division. On paper the 'Hawks might have the better all around team, especially on offense with Matt Hasselbeck, but the Skins are simply a team on a mission. Todd Collins has been quite efficient as the team's quarterback and team leader since the injury to Jason Campbell. He has led a Redskins offense that has played mistake-free football, which is the key in the postseason. Since the death of Sean Taylor, Washington appears to be a team focused and ready to play with enthusiasm. Redskins 27-24Pittsburgh Steelers v. Jacksonville JaguarsEveryone around the NFL seems to be on the Jaguars bandwagon right now, and it is pretty obvious as to why. Jacksonville has a dual-headed monster at running back with Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew, a mistake-free quarterback in David Garrard, and a stifling defensive unit. For the past month, the Steelers have been pretty inconsistent, and they'll also be playing without star running back Willie Parker, who was injured just a few weeks ago. The Steelers to be on the downside while the Jaguars seem to be getting better each week. I'll take the hotter team. Jaguars 24-17Tampa Bay Buccaneers v. New York GiantsWhile the Giants looked sensational offensively against the Patriots last Saturday, inconsistency has plagued them all season. Some games Eli Manning has looked like his older brother while in others he reminded fans of Ryan Leaf. What is most disturbing about Eli is his 20 interceptions and his 56% completion rate. Certainly the Giants have the firepower to potentially make a run in the NFC, but they have also proven to choke and collapse after emo

'Kudos & Wet Willies,' Playoff Edition
    2007-12-24 05:45:57
Ahmad Bradshaw breaks away en route to his 88-yard touchdown run Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. (AP Photo) It's a joyous day for New York Giants' fans. Facing a 14-0 deficit Sunday and staring at another late-season collapse, the 10-5 Giants fought their way to a 38-21 victory and a third straight playoff appearance. There are plenty of 'kudos' to be doled out, and a couple of 'Wet Willies,' so let's get started. Kudos to ... • Ahmad Bradshaw: If you didn't know this is where I was going to start today, you weren't paying attention Sunday. Bradshaw had the breakout game the Giants and their fans have been anticipating, and he showed up just in time. His 88-yard touchdown run broke open a tight game and propelled the Giants into the playoffs. His 17-carry, 151-yard performance means the Giants have added another playmaker to their arsenal. • Brandon Jacobs: The big beast ran over the Bills for a career-high 145 yards on

    Are Chargers playoff worthy?
    2007-12-06 16:58:00
Whether they deserve it or not, the Chargers are going to make the playoffs. They can greatly thank the Denver Broncos, who suddenly aren’t good enough to beat even the Bad News (Chicago) Bears … or Oakland Raiders, for that matter. If you want a true measure of how well the Chargers might fare in the playoffs, just wait till Sunday. They are being awaited by a Tennessee Titans team that could make or break their wild-card playoff hopes with this weekend’s result. The Titans have a big name at quarterback in Vince Young, but they are not a big play team. They are very capable, however, of grinding it out on you with one of the best offensive lines in the NFL.Here’s a fact to consider about the Titans: They are 7-2 when defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth is healthy; 0-3 when he’s not.Btw, Haynesworth is healthy this week. The Chargers have appeared healthy their last two games with wins over Baltimore and Kansas City. But that’s like bragging about beating the Little Sisters of the Poor … along with their littler sisters. This weekend, the true test comes in Tennessee.Time to find out what LaDainian Tomlinson, Shawne Merriman, Antonio Gates and the rest of their teammates are all about.Prediction:Titans 23, Chargers 20

    Bills Playoff Push Update
    2007-12-03 15:53:30
[editor's note, by Brian Galliford] Large props to jri111 for saving me the time of doing this later on in the week. Playoff scenarios are fun, and it's rare we get to talk about them this far into the season. Relish it. Make sure to read John's comment on three-way tiebreakers for a deeper understanding of our situation. I didn't have the heart to post after the Jags loss (or the time - law school finals are a B*tch!). But I needed a study break so I quickly went through and updated the last posting from two weeks ago. So here we go... AFC East New England - 11-0 Buffalo - 6-6 The Pats are officially division champs and have the top seed all but locked up.   AFC Central Pittsburgh - 9-3 Cleveland - 7-5 Pittsburgh (9-3) currently sits atop the division with only 2 remaining games against teams with winning records (NE and Jags). They end with road games against St. Louis and Baltimore. Cleveland is 7-5. If the Bills make the playoffs, that means they win out

Bills Playoff Chase: Who to Root For
    2007-11-23 13:35:46
This is the second year of the Marv Levy and Dick Jauron era in Buffalo, and much like the first year, the Bills find themselves on the edge of playoff contention as the season hits the stretch run. At 5-5, the Bills are currently tied with three other teams at .500 and rank 9th in the AFC standings. And, like last year, if the Bills hope to continue to contend until the final weeks of the season, they are going to need some help from other teams. In that light, I thought it would be beneficial to take a look at what will be happening in the rest of the AFC playoff chase games this weekend. This guide will outline all of the games relevant to the 2007 future of the Bills, and which team you should be pulling for should the Bills continue to keep themselves alive with a victory of their own: Bills (5-5) at Jaguars (7-3) With Marshawn Lynch OUT, we need all the help we can get. Bruce Arena Has His Team--And Its Playoff Opponent--Right Where He Wants Them
    2007-10-17 16:22:00
It's been a long season and while the New York Red Bulls have admittedly not done very well recently, I believe Bruce Arena has the team poised for a playoff run that will (gasp!) surpass the normal "one and done" post-season routine its fans have grown accustomed to. Where is this blasphemous talk coming from? I'll tell you:First, the team is finally healthy. Kovalenko, Mendes, Altidore and Freeman have all missed time with injuries this season, which has had deleterious effects on the team's play. Its defense in particular has been completely ineffective as a result of injuries (and questionable personnel decisions; I'll get to that in a bit). Okay, so Captain America is injured (still...or again, take your pick) but he really hasn't done much (or anything, really) and more importantly hasn't been missed. The team's best stretch earlier in the season came with him out of the lineup.Second, Arena finally finally seems to be going with the best starting lineup at his disposal. We saw a beta version for the Kansas City game: Conway in goal, Freeman and Mendes in defense and Doe, Altidore and Angel up front. Forget Seth Stammler, who also started that game. He was filling in for Joe Vide, who was suspended. Vide, though flawed on many levels, is the far better option at that position. Jozy looked a bit lost in left midfield but I think that was just an experiment; expect to see him back at striker with Angel and Doe playing behind them. Mathis and Woly are best-used coming off the bench. I'm not sure why Arena putzed around with people like Chris Leitch and Goldwaithe and Waterreus. Maybe he wanted to play mind games with Freeman and Conway, not to mention with opposing coaches, though the latter scenario is probably a bit far-fetched.Third, look at New England, Red Bulls' first round opponent. Yes, I know the New York franchise hasn't beaten the Revs since the pre-Red Bull days. But the teams played pretty evenly this season and Red Bull was unlucky to not come away with more points--especially when they played at Foxboro, Mass. (thanks Jon Conway). More importantly, look at what New England has done since they won the U.S. Open Cup Oct. 3: consecutive losses to Chicago and Columbus, the second at home. Yikes. They may not win the regular season finale at Toronto either. The first-year club will want to put on a decent showing for their fans on the last day of the season. New England will be resting starters. Taylor Twellman may not even suit up because he's in Switzerland with the national team. Speaking of, his confidence may be shot after that game seeing as he is basically hopeless against quality defenders and the Swiss happen to have plenty of them. Finally, these are not the Metrostars. Red Bull has brought a new attitude and outlook. Not to mention quality acquisitions and a coach who is a proven winner--both in MLS and internationally, unlike the others who were one or the other (or neither), but never both. The last thing Red Bull fans want to do is get their hopes up. That's understandable. This franchise has been too mediocre for too long for there to be any cause for even cautious optimism. But this time is different. Be bullish.

Soccer Source Commenter Contests: Win RB Playoff Tix
    2007-10-14 22:43:00
In an effort to draw more comments to this site, I am starting two contests that reward the top commentator. Anybody who comments on this site will be eligible (with certain exceptions) to win a pair of New York Red Bulls playoff tickets (for Saturday night, Oct. 27 versus the New England Revolution). The start of the contests begin as this post is published and will end Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 1pm (leaving enough time for me to mail you the tickets) at which point I will make a post with the winners. Anybody not related to me is eligible. More details below. One contest will work very much like a raffle and seeks to reward frequent commenters. Anybody who comments is assigned an ID and placed in a digital hat. The more you comment, the better the odds of winning. The other contest will be more subjective and will reward the individual with what I (and maybe 1-2 people whose opinions I respect on this matter) to be the most consistently constructive comments. This is meant to reward commenters who do not have the time and energy to do so on a frequent basis. It is also meant to encourage quality versus quantity. That said, for a comment to be eligible, it must fall within these parameters: It should add to the discussion.Must be at least 100 words and at least somewhat related to my post. You must provide a valid e-mail address (that will not be made public).Comments should be (somewhat) respectful and avoid personal attacks.I have to approve all comments before they are published on the site anyway, so I'm not expecting a flood of spam. I will alert the winners and attempt to contact them to arrange delivery after the end of the contests. If there are any further questions, please leave a comment. Please note that any comments on this post are indeed eligible (with exceptions stated above).Disclaimers: This contest is in no way affiliated with the New York Red Bulls or Major League Soccer. This contest was inspired by (and certain parts directly lifted from) ronafly.comI reserve the right to end or extend the contest at any time.I reserve the right to exclude certain winners.I reserve the right to change the prize awarded.I reserve the right to add to, and/or modify the rules at any time.

Saturday Night Fever: RB Home Playoff Game Set For Oct. 27
    2007-10-12 21:23:00
The Red Bulls' first--and probably last--home playoff game of 2007 will take place at 7:30pm on Saturday, Oct. 27. Yes, the RB has qualified for the playoffs, though by no feat of their own (see related post on the matter). The other option was for the game to be held on a Thursday night, which would have made it difficult for me to attend due to commitments at my real job, so I'm pleased.Tickets for the game on sale now and can be purchased on the Red Bulls' Web site. I should note that I will be giving away four of them (along with other RB gear) through this blog, as part of a contest to be determined. I'll have more on that later this weekend.Hopefully the weather will hold and a good crowd will show up. In eight Saturday night home games this year, the team has averaged 20,537 fans--a respectable number that is inflated by the 66,237 who made it out for a certain Aug. 18 game against the L.A. Galaxy. If you remove that game from the equation, the average attendance for Saturday night games is 14,009, according to my math.

Golf: The Tour Championship Preview - FedEx Cup playoff #4
    2007-09-13 01:42:39
This is what we have been waiting for: the FedEx Cup final playoff when we will finally see if all the fuss has been worth it and whether any man is worth 10 million dollars just for hitting a little golf ball around (as my old Mum so elegantly puts it). So it all comes down to the TOUR Championship this weekend with five players realistically in with a chance of taking the title (and the money!) The top five in the FedEx Cup point standings:Tiger Woods 112,733 Steve Stricker 109,600 Phil Mickelson 108,613 Rory Sabbatini 103,588 K.J. Choi 103,100(the winner of this event is awarded 10300 points)PredictionsAll the experts are suggesting Tiger is in hot form and will run away with this one too, but we are talking about the top 30 golfers here and none of them are going to lie down. It is interesting to note that Tiger has only won this tournament once (1999) and the tournament has had 10 different winners in 10 years. My heart goes with Steve Stricker who has definitely been the surprise packet of the FedEx Cup playoffs! However, I still think that Tiger will win this one and will earn the 10 million dollars for his fledgling retirement fund!Stay tuned for Tomorrows article "Who can win the fedex cup and what they need to do it!" where I will explain what scenarios need to occur for each player to win. If you are still confused by this strange new golf tournament you can read my earlier article FedEx Cup Explained

Golf News: BMW Championship - FedEx Cup playoff #2 preview
    2007-09-11 06:45:02
Only the top 70 players are left standing for the 3rd FedEx Cup playoff the BMW championship. The roots of this tournament go back to 1899 when it was the former Western Open and make it the 3rd oldest golf tournament in the world (only the U.S open and British open are older). Only 30 players will remain in the running after this tournament so I expect their will be some fantastic golf.Phil Mickelson withdraws for the BMW championshipThe biggest news so far is that FedEx Cup points leader Phil Mickelson has withdrawn from the event because he says he needs to spend more time with his family. Now this could be seen as a serious problem for the FedEx Cup in the race to become golfs ultimate prize as you can't imagine Phil would not be taking a break in the lead up to say the British open or other major. My predictionWith Phil out of the running I think that Tiger will be the favorite and rightly so he has won at Cog Hill three times and has never finished lower than seventh on the course! My outside picks would have to be Steve Stricker, who is in great form, and Robert Allenby, who won this tournament back in 2000.

Golf News: Tiger is the king of Cog Hill - BMW Championship (FedEx Cup Playoff 3)
    2007-09-11 06:34:39
Tiger Woods has gone on to take his 60th tour victory at the BMW Championship and regains the lead on the FedEx Cup standings. Tiger, who has won at Cog Hill 3 times previous to this victory, had a fantastic round of golf and was deadly with the putter and posted a record equalling round of 63. Arron Baddeley and Steve Stricker also tried their best to stay with Tiger making some great birdies, but could not match the master. The top ten: PosNameCountryTotalStrokes1234 1 Tiger Woods USA -22 262 67 67 65 63 2 Aaron Baddeley AUS -20 264 68 65 65 66 3 Steve Stricker USA -18 266 68 66 64 68 4 Adam Scott AUS -14 270 69 69 67 65 5 Tim Clark SAF -13 271 68 69 67 67 5 Justin Rose ENG -13 271 65 69 69 68 7 Stewart Cink USA -12 272 66 73 68 65 7 Camilo Villegas COL -12 272 65 69 71 67 9 Sergio Garcia ESP -10 274 68 70 69 67 10 Ian Poulter ENG -9 275 68 72 69 66 10 Rory Sabbatini SAF -9 275 69 72 68 66 10 Carl Pettersson SWE -9 275 71 68 69 67 The event saw some changes in the FedEx Cup standings with Camilo Villegas, Tim Clark and Stewart Cink all playing some great golf to come from outside the top 30 to finish within the cut off line. Unfortunately this means an early exit for Luke Donald, Jerry Kelly and Arron Oberholser who were all inside the top 30 before the event, but just missed the cut off line. The Top 5 in the FedEx Cup standings:1 Tiger Woods 2 Steve Stricker 3 Phil Mickelson 4 Rory Sabbatini 5 K.J. Choi Realistically only the top 5 now have a chance at taking the FedEx Cup, but with 35 million dollars in the kitty everyone will be trying to win The Tour Championship next week.

Golf News: Deutsche Bank Championship - FedEx Cup Playoff 2

Phil Mickelson got the break early, and battled Tiger Woods shot-for-shot down the stretch to win the Deutsche Bank Championship earlier today. The win is his 32nd on the Tour, and it gives him the FedExCup points lead with just two events to go.In what was a great victory for the big left hander he matched Tiger in an everything-you-can-do I-can-do-too battle. Phil himself told reporters that he has struggled against Tiger for 10 years and that his record is pathetic and that it felt great to be able to match Tiger. The top ten: 1 Phil Mickelson USA -16 2 Tiger Woods USA -14 2 Aaron Oberholser USA -14 2 Brett Wetterich USA -14 5 Aaron Baddeley AUS -11 6 Geoff Ogilvy AUS -10 6 Rory Sabbatini SAF -10 8 Robert Allenby AUS -9 9 Fredrik Jacobson SWE -8 9 Steve Stricker USA -8 9 Troy Matteson USA -8 9 Camilo Villegas COL -8 In the FedEx cup standings there have been some big movers in both directions. Good results from Aaron Oberholser and Brett Wetterich have moved them from 67 and 51 to 29 and 22 respectively. The top 10 on the Fedex cup standings are as follows: Phil Mickelson 108,613 Steve Stricker 106,200 Tiger Woods 103,733 K.J. Golf News: The Barclays - FedEx Cup playoff 1.
    2007-09-11 06:32:38
    Steve Stricker has won the 1st FedEx Cup event The Barclays in an amazing finish. When hope seemed to be lost he birdied four of his last five holes to close with a 2-under 69, turning a one-shot deficit into a two-shot victory over South Korean K.J Choi.This is Strickers fourth PGA tour victory and his first in four years. It was a welcome tournament win after wasting four prime chances to win on the tour this year.The top 10 at the Barclays were: 1 Steve Stricker USA -16 268 67 67 65 69 F 2 K.J. Choi KOR -14 270 64 66 70 70 F 3 Mark Calcavecchia USA -12 272 67 75 65 65 F 3 Ernie Els SAF -12 272 65 71 68 68 F 3 Geoff Ogilvy AUS -12 272 68 66 69 69 F 3 Rory Sabbatini SAF -12 271 63 71 69 68 F 7 Rich Beem USA -11 273 64 68 69 72 F 7 Phil Mickelson USA -11 273 67 70 69 67 F 9 Jerry Kelly USA -10 274 67 70 69 68 F 9 Ian Poulter ENG -10 274 70 67 70 67 F 9 Robert Garrigus USA -10 274 70 70 68 66 F So there is some change in t

FedEx Cup playoff #2 preview - Deutsche Bank Championship
    2007-08-30 01:18:09
Tournament information Location Norton, Massachusetts Established 2003 Course(s) TPC of Boston Par 71 Yardage 7,115 Tour(s) PGA Tour Format Stroke play Purse $7,000,000 Month Played August/SeptemberTournament record score Aggregate 264 Adam Scott (2003) To-par -20 Adam Scott (2003) Current champion Tiger WoodsFirst there was 144 now there is 120 players vying for the FedEx Cup and this week the Cup moves to the Deutsche Bank Championship. After his win last week Steve Stricker now tops the FedEx Cup points and will be looking to have another good week to keep himself in the running. Tiger is back to defend his title for this one and will be sure to make things interesting as I feel the course really suits his style of play (don't they all).My predictionThe course is long and wide open and I think the winner will be someone who bombs the golf ball out there. Tiger, Scott, Mickelson, and V J are my top picks although Tiger will be hard to beat after his week off.As for the FedEx cup it is wide open, but my prediction is the winner will come from the top 10-20 players. I think the rest have too much catching up to do. Although as Rich Beem showed, moving up 21 places, with a good performance anything is possible.

Chargers Fan Sues Team on Playoff Refund Plan
    2007-07-22 00:18:43
According to Brent Schrotenboer of the San Diego Tribune, Chargers season ticket holder has filed a class-action suit against the team in San Diego County Superior Court, accusing it of unjust enrichment for not automatically giving refunds to those who bought tickets to a second playoff game that was never played.  Last season, Charger fans who were willing to buy 2007 season tickets were given the option of purchasing tickets for January 2007 playofff tickets. The class-action suit states that as part of the sale, they were required to purchase tickets for both prospective playoff games.  However, after the Chargers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs, the team kept the funds for the second game.  The plaintiff in this lawsuit, Kells Christian, was apparently informed by the team that he would receive a refund provided he put it in writing and also provided a copy of his current state drivers license.  In addition, the Chargers informed Mr. Christian th

The NBA Playoff Outlook and a Surprisingly Entertaining European Football Match
    2007-05-18 16:21:40
This post was going to be about the NBA playoffs.  I was going to write about how the Spurs, a team that I had rooted for many times in years past as they played the evil Lakers, had officially become The Bad Guys, largely due to Bruce Bowen’s dirty play.  Yes, he is a dirty [...]

MLB playoff picks sure to go wrong!
    2007-04-03 04:49:06
With the MLB season under way, it seems only fitting that the Twins should be overlooked again by the baseball analysts at ESPN. We have a reigning Cy Young pitcher, a perennial Gold Glover, a batting champ, and oh yeah the MV-frickin-P, and yet we get no love from the big name analysts at ESPN. Only one, Jim Caple, had the Twins winning the division and eventually winning the World Series. I thought with the talent we had we would get a few more looks from the likes of Gammons, Olney, and Stark, but no. The following link will take you to see who they picked:http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/preview07/news/story?page=07expertpicksSo, I thought I would take it to the blog and see who you thought would win the division or grab the wild card, and win the World Series. The following are my picks, but please post a comment on who you think will make the playoffs and go on to win the World Series. Go Twinkies!!!AL East: Yankees   AL West: A's

The Frogster’s Continued Continuance of the Continuing NFL Playoff Picks And My Last Post Ever About Election 2008
    2007-01-22 10:17:15
Well, I went 1-1 this weekend, which gives me a 6-4 playoff pick record.  The average of the “Expert” pickers at ESPN over the same period is 5.888888888 wins, which, pending the outcome of The Super Bowl, makes me an expert.  Therefore, in an attempt to solidify my status and enshrine myself as one of the great pickers of all time, I will spend the next several days carefully analyzing the relative strengths, weaknesses and injuries on both squads before making a decision.  Nah, since I can’t sleep I’ll just take an insomniac’s whack at it.  Colts over Bears.  Lock it in, dial it up, send it home to mother, etc.  On the way home from my sister’s place (which is close to Philly), the radio stations I get on the car radio fade in and out, so I spend some of the time “seeking” while driving when I leave my cool Sirius receiver at home.  On one AM station, I think it was 770, there was a talk show about the potential presidential nomi

The Frogster’s Continuance of the Continuing NFL Playoff Picks
    2007-01-15 07:52:00
As Saturday ended, I looked in great shape for a 4-0 weekend.  Sunday, however, I rolled a squadoosh (I have never seen that word written down before, but this is how I imagine it should be spelled).  However, that puts me at a 5-3 record for the playoffs (with the Patriots accounting for 2 of those defeats).  The average number of correct picks by the experts at ESPN is 5.1111111111111111111111etc., which means 1 am only .1111111111111111111111etc. away from being a certified expert, at least by ESPN’s standards.  I’m gonna go against the Patriots again, because, as the Hobbits kept saying in The Lord of the Rings series, including the charming intro The Hobbit, the third time is a charm (or maybe they said the third time pays for all.  But I know they said something like that, and since I can’t sleep, I may just watch The Fellowship of the Ring after finishing this post, so the reference is appropriate to my life).  Anyway, my picks: Colts over The Frogster

The Frogster’s Continuing NFL Playoff Picks
    2007-01-08 16:34:59
I went 3-1 this weekend, and I agonized over the pick I got wrong for a while.  I thought the Jets could go back to Foxboro and win.  I was incorrect.  The Expert picks on the ESPN site averaged 3.33 wins this week, so I’m a little behind the 8-ball.  But I will make up for it by correctly picking all of the winners for next weekend.  Absolutely.  Guaranteed.  No sweat.  I promise.* *The Frog Bog, owners of The Frog Bog, employees, wives, children, relatives, friends, people who went to my wedding, people I used to play in bands with, people I bumped into on the subway when it swayed back and forth and any future children that may be the result of any as yet unrealized couplings of the list of above individuals accept not one iota of responsibility for these picks.  So, with absolutely no doubt and complete clarity, the winners for The Divisional Round (Jan. 13-14): Chargers over Patriots Saints over Eagles Colts over Ravens Seahawks over Bears

    Snakes on a Playoff
    0000-00-00 00:00:00
Tino Martinez temporarily broke Diamondback fans’ hearts in 2001, but the Snakes bit back. The Diamondbacks are back in the postseason for the first time since 2002, marking the fourth trip to the playoffs in franchise history. They open the NLCS Thursday at home against the NL Central Division Champion Cubs, the first time Arizona will square [...]
