Persian Poetry of Love, Mystery and God
    2008-07-20 11:14:41
Love is a major theme in Persian poetry and can be interpreted in various ways - as mystic love, the basis of the relationship between human and God or as passionate or affectionate love between lovers, husbands and wives, parents and children, family and friends, or even as patriotic love for Iran.Poetry is part of the everyday life of almost every Iranian - we are continuously exposed to names such as Rudaki, Firdausi, Umar Khayyam, Sa'di, Hafiz, Maulavi Rumi, Nizami and many others. Poetry is much enjoyed by Iranians and other Persian (Farsi) speakers, who find solace and pleasure not just in the poetic language but also in the poet's philosophical and human approach to life - above all, in a mystic (sufi) view of the world, reaching truth and God through intense love and devotion. On Persian Poetic FormsGhazal: a short poem, 7-15 lines, all having the same rhyme. The last line normally include the signature of the poet. Generally resembling the sonnet and used for lyric poetry, it

Call for Submission | Sufi Poetry Carnival | 2nd Edition: 'Knocking from Inside'
    2008-07-15 10:57:13
    1. HistoryLast year end of May, Sadiq Alam and Tiel Aisha Ansari jointly hosted the 1st Edition of Online Sufi Poetry Carnival. The idea of a Blog Carnival is a collection of blog posts/ site links on a specific subject/ theme. We are happy to announce that the 2nd Online Sufi Poetry Carnival will be jointly hosted at Inspirations and Creative Thoughts, Courts of Lions and Abdur Rahman's Corner sites on August 7th, 2008.2. ThemeThe past round's theme was "Celebrating Divine Love" and this time around it is "Knocking from Inside".Sufi Dervishes are people who live at the threshold of this world and the next, between the visible world and the unseen realm. The truest and deepest expressions of sufi poetry arrive from lived experiences within and it's the ecstasy of soul that knocks from inside on the door of our external world. Daniel Abdal Hayy Moore once expressed: "the province of poetry is a private ecstasy made public."On the idea of "Knocking from Inside" Rumi says (translated by Co

    [original poetry] frolicking amongst flowers
    2008-07-13 16:19:54
Frolicking Amongst Flowers My memories of that day are hazy (like wisps of smoke, floating) supplemented only by photographs. It’s overcast and cool but nice perfect for an outing. My parents take me to the Cornell Plantations, content to let me wander here and there– and everywhere. I traipse across the grounds trying to poke and feed fish pebbles and chase after Monarch Butterflies wearing myself [...]

Saterday Soul Search : Food Poetry
    2008-06-27 13:29:56
In my hopes to re-ignite my poetry writing, I try to find food pictures that will inspire me - then in a creative burst, I try to write out the thoughts that come to mind and type them out immediately. Here are some of my plated desserts shots and the words that became of them...Sugar fired ---extreme degrees render your cube like structure molten. How you boil into a yellow frenzy ---Scorching, throwing your strand like tentaclesgrasping and attachingyour hot intensityslips quietly into a more permanent existence ---Hardening , your exterior smooth, yet fragile inyour mockglass sheen.Related Posts:Soul Search : Saturday Food PoetryPoetry of BakingPoetry : The Long Ferment | Blogs That Flickr | Renaissance Culinaire | plated desserts | food poetry | baking poetry | sugar garnish | dessert | spun+sugar | photoblog | flickr |

A New Feature at Amerikan Turk: Poetry by Orhan Altinbasak
    2008-06-25 21:41:00
Yes lately this blog is about as popular as visiting your oral surgeaon or proctologist, and for this I'm regretful. The past 30 days have sucked balls.. all of my regular readers will tell you. But I'm turning over a new leaf. While in Turkey last month, I met with my Father's eldest brother Orhan, who is an accomplished poet, singer and song writer. He has self-published two books of poetry and until now, I was hesitant to share his work with you, my readers. Well, as luck would have it, he is thrilled with the idea of having a regular contribution here which includes one of his poems. The frequency is up in the air, but let's begin with one and then I'll play it by ear. Before I begin though- I need to figure out how to post these poems using the Turkish Alphabet. It might require me to type them out in Word, then copy/paste them into blogger. I'll try it out shortly. Many thanks.

CAGED BIRDA free bird leapson the back of the windand floats downstreamtill the current endsand dips his wingin the orange sun raysand dares to claim the sky.But a bird that stalksdown his narrow cagecan seldom see throughhis bars of ragehis wings are clipped andhis feet are tiedso he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird singswith a fearful trillof things unknownbut longed for stilland his tune is heardon the distant hillfor the caged birdsings of freedom. The free bird thinks of another breezeand the trade winds soft through the sighing treesand the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawnand he names the sky his own.But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreamshis shadow shouts on a nightmare screamhis wings are clipped and his feet are tiedso he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird singswith a fearful trillof things unknownbut longed for stilland his tune is heardon the distant hillfor the caged birdsings of freedom.Maya Angelou Official SiteSubscribe to RSS headline updates fr

I have written all my life with that I have come across so many writing offers and scams on the internet. What I have learned so many writing frauds or scams out there it is so sad and heart breaking. The one I see the most for being a major misleading offer is poetry contests that I don’t think it is even a contest to begin with. I even fell for it when I was a teenager. I entered my poem in the contest then weeks later a letter in the mail saying my writing was so good they are going to publ

    César Vallejo: The Complete Poetry
    2008-05-14 18:25:01
Eric Ormsby reviews César Vallejo's The Complete Poetry. Vallejo did to the Spanish language what earthquakes did to Spanish masonry. He sent it flying, exploding verbs, twisting nouns, subverting New World Castilian with slang, neologisms, and fragments of Quechua, the indigenous language of the northern Andean region, where he was born March 16, 1892. His poems pulverized Spanish, then

Poetry is useless. Language, communication, investigation, beauty, are all crammed into one futile thing, after all, in comparison to essential needs.Their usefulness is extremely arbitrary, erratic, ambiguous.i have begun to feel detached from academics, essays on literature, even writing, as I hate to see me in a flow, a flood of self-centered aesthetic jaded characters. Then of course, I go to see a concert and the power of art is clear and self-evident, its function too, however hard it be t

In Memory of Anyone Unknown to MeAt this particular time I have no oneParticular person to grieve for, though there mustBe many, many unknown ones going to dustSlowly, not remembered for what they have doneOr left undone. For these, then, I will grieveBeing impartial, unable to deceive. How they lived, or died, is quite unknown,And, by that fact gives my grief purity--An important person quite apart from meOr one obscure who drifted down alone. Both or all I remember, have a place. For these I never encountered face to face.Sentiment will creep in. I cast it outWishing to give these classical repose,No epitaph, no poppy and no roseFrom me, and certainly no wish to learn aboutThe way they lived or died. In earth or fireThey are gone. Simply because they were human, I admire.Elizabeth JenningsArticle about the writerSubscribe to RSS headline updates from: Powered by FeedBurner

There is poetry where you livein the real-time, living of our liveslittle bits of grace, of beauty, of magicmoments, images, sensory collisionsstopping to notice them,to really see them, the hula skirt oak blossoms, after they have shed their pollen, the snow of parmesan cheese on my spaghetti, the wedding bouquet of nascent lilacsthe laugh of our girls, the smile of my wifewhen I come in the doorthe tied-dyed sunset of the other nighttrying to think of the cascade of colorthe cacophony of the birds in the bushes out frontthe story of a gift of grace on the radioSlow down, look around, and see the poetry where you live tooMay 7, 2008

ALONEFrom childhood's hour I have not beenAs others were; I have not seenAs others saw; I could not bringMy passions from a common spring. From the same source I have not takenMy sorrow; I could not awakenMy heart to joy at the same tone; And all I loved, I loved alone.Then- in my childhood, in the dawnOf a most stormy life- was drawnFrom every depth of good and illThe mystery which binds me still:From the torrent, or the fountain,From the red cliff of the mountain,From the sun that round me rolledIn its autumn tint of gold,From the lightning in the skyAs it passed me flying by,From the thunder and the storm,And the cloud that took the form(When the rest of Heaven was blue)Of a demon in my view. Poetry contest - I got honorable mention
    2008-04-29 07:00:46
Every now and then something happens which brings different pieces of my life together. A couple of months ago I went to the Springfield Library to hear poet Martin Espada read-- always a treat-- and while I was there I found out that the library was having a poetry contest for Western Mass. poets. Without much thought or expectation, I picked a poem and sent it in. Lo and behold, I got honorable mention; yesterday the poets read their chosen works to a small band of other poets and friends at the library..I was honored to get some kind and encouraging words from Magdelena Gomez, a poet whose work I admire very much. I was relieved also that people seemed to think the poem was better than I thought it was. It's been years since I seriously thought of trying to get my poems published-- but I still write, and I still get pleasure from modeling words like clay to a desired effect. Most of my poems are much smaller than the one I submitted, more precise and not overtly political. But

    Poetry by Astronomy
    2008-04-19 17:35:00
On my middle aged quest to find meaning, I turned to astronomy. The heavenly blue skies ended where the emptiness of space started. There lies my physical limitations and started jumpstarting my imaginations. Where will we be in the distant future? Can we travel to distant galaxies and still find meaning?I didn’t find meaning but I did found ethereal beauty, the indescribable beauty of the heavenly bodies. Be it a mindful creation of a magnanimous being, an unbelievable accident caused by mere chance, or a billion year process of evolution, I simply don’t care. Sometimes, you don’t have to know the exact reason to admire something exquisitely beautiful.I watched as billions of particles try to enter the atmosphere. I could see some atoms bounced to travel back to where it came from… back to the emptiness within. I saw how one massive black hole swagger its might, walloping all the stars and galaxies into oblivion, sucking them all past event horizon… only to spit them all out

Maybe The Poetry Of Alfred, Lord Tennyson Can Help
    2008-04-08 21:18:00
Want to lift you spirits? Well how about this - let’s learn to jot down some poetry - poetry can really bring a dull mind up and help one see life from a whole new spectrum. Most of you reading this think you would only be wasting thy precious time reading poems and writing poetry - I beg to differ. Alfred Tennyson, Robert Bly, David Thoreau, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, James Joyce, Joanna Baillie - all great poets who found great dimensions in the use of the written word. These poetry lovers and many more just like them, see here: all about poets, thought man could, and can see more into his existence by expressing himself through the written word. Go there and find wonderful poets and consciousness-raising poetry that I’m sure will enlighten your mental state. Words can hurt - but they can also heal. Poetry is founded not just on the the abilty to rhyme words, that’s not the sole reason or foundation for the creation of poetry. A poet attempts to convey his or her inner p

Mar. 21 - World Poetry Day / Dia Mundial da Poesia
    2008-03-20 20:18:00
World Poetry Day is commemorated on March 21. This day was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999. The purpose of the day is to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world and, as the UNESCO session declaring the day says, to "give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements."«The year 2008 is of particular significance for poetry. Indeed, the United Nations has proclaimed it International Year of Languages. Languages are the very material of poetry constituting the substance out of which poems are made. For poets, this year is therefore the occasion to reflect and act on the extraordinary richness that linguistic diversity offers for their art.» Read here the Message from Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, on the occasion of World Poetry Day,21 March 2008

Poetry is my oulet for saying what I can't out loud, It's my therapy my feelings and words written or typed my psychtrist, that doesn't charge me $150 an hour and you undermine me? Make fun of, afraid afraid I'm writing about you Yes, some are and I purge myself this way, because I can't do it to your face you don't listen you don't want to listen so I write with pen, or type on this keyboard beacause they won't tell me my feelings are wrong, they won't tell me my pain is imaginery and they won't tell me my frustration is ill founded so I write, or type until I am empty empty of anger, empty of hurt empty of frustration until tomarrow... when you have filled me up yet again....

    Poetry Shoes
    2007-12-23 00:00:00
It was an ordinary day ( by which I mean to say it was as beautiful as every other day) when I walked up to the edge of the roof of the twenty story Bank Of America building and stepped off. Since I had my poetry shoes on I wasn't worried -- in those things I can do anything. I sauntered along, high over Tenth Street, twenty stories above the people below, sustained by sestinas and clouds of clerihews, and the wind in my hair and my face (and even the small gusts that would sneak up the legs of my pants) felt as cool as anything you might see in a fashion magazine -- "gonna have to use that line in a poem sometime," I told myself -- and by chance I looked up and I saw I wasn't alone. There were people everywhere! People stepping out from their offices, people who'd snuck up to the rooftops on breaks, people who'd slipped on their poetry shoes to rise above it all, just to get through their rotten days -- by which I mean their ordinary days. We all need a way to soar. Every

As anyone who’s anyone is probably already aware, Facebook recently removed the obligatory “is” from their status feature, leaving it as only a suggestion for future status updates and compelling dedicated Facebook users to rethink the way they have been composing status updates since the feature was introduced. This makes it an appropriate time to post [...]

The Complete Poetry - César Vallejo
    2007-10-26 19:08:12
John Timpane reviews César Vallejo's Complete Poetry. What a year was 1922. That year, T.S. Eliot’s poem “The Waste Land” was published. So was James Joyce’s “Ulysses.” So was Jean Toomer’s “Cane.” Whatever “modernism” means, 1922 was one of its peaks. Also that year, a poet from Peru published a book called “Trilce”—to complete silence at home and abroad. Too different, a departure too far.

Rumi Reader | Books on Rumi's Poetry, Love and illumination
    2007-10-01 06:09:58
Commemorating the 800th Birthday of Rumi, one of the greatest mystic, philosopher and poet of all time here is a selection of best acknowledged books on Rumi - of not only poetry but also about journey with his mystical sufi master, Shams a Tabriz. For those who wish to understand Rumi better, reading about Shams a Tabriz is essential because its under him Rumi became Rumi. RUMI: The Pocket Reader by Kabir Helminski - the Shaikh of the Mevlevi Order- contains handpicked gems of Rumi’s love and wisdom in poetry and prose, and will easily fit into the smallest pocket book. Flip through it gently and it will faithfully open itself out to a page that has the right lesson for you for that moment, no matter where you are.The Essential Rumi by Coleman Barks and John Moyne is a medium sized, excellent collection of poems carefully selected and translated. This book is great for anyone who wants to begin to understand the length and breadth of Rumi’s poetry – how he has covered all aspects of life – in his profound poetry. It’s also a great introduction to Coleman Barks’ original way of translating Rumi.Hidden Music by Maryam Mafi and Azima Melita Kolin is a hard bound medium sized book exquisite in art and text- every page has a work of art and a corresponding poem in Persian script, with the accompanying translation. It covers the very delicate themes of love, surrender, grace, and beauty, so unique to Rumi. The Way of Love by Nigel Watts is a brilliant attempt at presenting the awe inspiring story of Rumi and Shams, and the multi dimensional student-teacher relationship. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the spiritual journey of Rumi, and gain inspiration from none other than the master of love and mysticism. The Illuminated Rumi by Micheal Green and Coleman Barks is an exquisite coffee table book that marries the art by Michael Green with the poetry of Rumi as translated by Coleman Barks, and takes us beyond our limited imagination, into a realm of wonder and awe.Me & Rumi: The Autobiography of Shams-I Tabrizi translated by William Chittick is the story of the wild man called Shams who is responsible for the transformation of Rumi and therefore, for all the volumes of letters, stories, table talks, and poetry that have come forth and presented themselves to millions of seekers across the world. Like Shams, this book is intense and often difficult to understand through just mere intellect.:: Thanks to my dear dear friend (who wishes to be anonymous) for helping with this compilation. May she always remain under the loving glance of Beloved.

    Poetry: Democracy died today
    2007-07-10 15:25:07
I thought I’d bring this poem back from retirement to remind us of what happened almost 4 years ago during the Presidential elections. It also speaks to the types of injustice going on all around the world today, as we still battle in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places around the world. Hopefully, this will encourage people to step up and do the right thing - to give peace and harmony a chance - and allow democracy to bloom again with life. Democracy died today We want to give freedom to others yet people are still enslaved here the binds may not be around our ankles but they are still there… on our minds. Democracy died today. Millions went to the polls waited hours upon hours to vote in the sun, the rain still to be disenfranchised. Democracy died today. Did the solider in Iraq have his ballot counted Or the citizens working in Afghanistan Why are the Iraqis laughing about our version of democracy when Democracy died today. Blackwell choked the system so that his boy c

Poetry of "Pir Meher Ali Shah" : (ABOUT LOVE FOR GOD) Translation:The wine of (Allah's) Unity was bestowed (as a favour) upon those who were intoxicated by the memory of 'alast' (Am I not?)[The reference here is to the Covenant mentioned in Ayah 172 of Surah VII of the Holy Quran, according to which Allah brought forth the posterity of the children of Adam from their backs on the Day of Creation and made them testify about themselves, saying: "Am I not your Lord?" They said: "Yea (Thou Art)! We testify].When I started reeling about in intoxication, my rivals appropriated this intoxication from me.The Image of Truth (i.e., God) appeared in the world of 'imkaan', i.e., "Possibility"; The universe was brought into submission through that Image. With the love of Him except Whom none else exists (in real terms), Were the beginning and the end (of the universe) signaled. What Depression Takes Away- Poetry-
    2007-06-30 13:55:00
What Depression Takes AwayBright eyes, Smiling face, Where have they gone?It left no trace.Uninhabited holes, A smile never true,You wouldn't believe it,Unless it were you.Every day is a struggle. Each new breath is more painful than the last.Your body, every single muscle, bone, tissue and vessel aches for freedom. Freedom from this nightmare. Pain comes with every movement. Just forcing yourself up from your never restful slumber hurts your being, your very existence. Words seem like never ending stories. Each word has to be painfully processed, through the worn down passages of your mind. When is finally reaches the end, you have somehow passed by all the other words.Leaving you with a fragment of the story - never to be re-told.by : A Lily Or A Rose?

TCR Poetry Corner - The Billy Goat
    2007-06-18 15:45:36
(With all respect for, and apologies to, Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”) The Billy Goat Once upon an evening dreary, while I watched a sad conspiracy - One of many cruel and curious volumes of Chicago lore, While I nodded, nearly snoozing, modestly I started musing at their newfound ways of losing, losing at victory’s door. “‘Tis the manager,” I muttered, “balking at victory’s door - Only this, and nothing more.”   Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak September, And each separate stranded runner wrought its ghost upon the floor. Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow From the blogs surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Prior - for the rare and radiant pitcher whom the angels named Prior - Nameless here for evermore   And the doughy visage leaning from the dugout’s edge Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before; So that now, to still the beating of my heart

Sufi Poets and Poetry | The Classical Masters
    2007-05-26 08:20:00
The Esoteric dimension of Islam which often termed as the way of the Sufi and the encounters that Sufism facilitates - encounters with God, love, and the deepest aspects of human consciousness. Sufism is like a holy well of sacred experience and has inspired some of the finest mystical poetry given to the world. Here is a list and links of some of the most prominent and classical Sufi Poets. Poetry Chaikhana that brings Sacred Poetry from Around the World has a comprehensive list of classical sufi poets, their brief biographical sketch and selected poems. The following list is adopted from Poetry Chaikhana.Abu-Said Abil-Kheir (967 - 1049)born in Mayhana, modern day Turkmenistan. lived more than two centuries before Rumi yet, like Rumi, much of his mysticism follows a similar path of annihilation in divine Love.Ahmad al-Alawi (1869 - 1934)an Algerian saint considered by many to be one of the greatest Sufi Masters of the 20th century.Abu 'l-Husayn al-Nuri (? - 908)was a native of Baghdad

    Poetry & Islam | Concept & Context
    2007-05-25 03:59:00
In Greek language poet means a “seer” and Arabic word “shair” means the man of consciousness and wisdom. Hence it can be said that poets are the sensitive people with higher senses and sensibilities. William Wordsworth says that poetry is intermittent inspiration and overflow of powerful emotions expressed in tranquility.God has created Prophets, poets and philosophers. No one can make them in factories, workshops and academies. Poets are born poets. Then why there is a general consensus that the Quran has condemned poets and poetry is something to be despised or rejected. Many people ask me about poetry. They pose the same traditional question which the dry priests tell them. Poetry is prohibited in the Quran. Is it? Let us briefly shed light on this subject.First of all we must understand that out of context we can never arrive at our destination. The Quran should be read and understood in totality of its message and spirit. Its verses are local and universal. Some

    Prophet Muhammad and Poetry appreciation
    2007-05-24 20:11:00
There has long been a great tradition of spiritual poetry in the world of Islam. From the time of the Blessed Prophet Muhammad, when his companions used to recite poetry with his approval, until our present day, Muslims have sought to discover the truth of the maxim, "In some poetry there is wisdom." - Prophet Muhammad. And look what has been contributed in terms of spiritual wisdom and truth of the reality by the famous muslims poets such as Jalaluddin Rumi, Hafiz, Amir Khusroo, Allama Iqbal, Jami, Attar, Omar Khayyam, Iraqi, Ibn Arabi, Mahmud Shabistari, Al Hallaj, Yunus Emre, Saadi and so many! They have given birth to the finest forms of poetry in human history."God is beautiful and He loves beauty." proclaimed the holy Prophet Muhammad. Fine Poetry is the expression of beauty in beautiful manner. In his article titled, Singing Rhymes and Poems by Adil Salahi published in Arab news mentions:The Prophet (peace be upon him) appreciated poetry, and admired fine poetry that steered awa

No Nightmares, Please - Why is so much children's poetry full of sadism and doom?
    2007-05-15 12:46:00
A nice piece by my new internet buddy.by Jeff Gordinier One day it dawns on you that your kid has watched too many episodes of Dora the Explorer. Every time the Dora character known as “Map” shows up on screen and sings, “I’m the Map I’m the Map I’m the Map I’m the Map,” you entertain private fantasies of dousing him in lighter fluid, torching him with a match, and giggling uncontrollably while he flails in agony. If a cartoon inspires this much raw hatred before you catch the train to work, it’s probably not a good idea for your kid to watch a ton of it.So maybe you want to expose your children to fine poetry instead. Which is great, except that you live in a country where some moron makes way more money than you do by writing lyrics like “I’m the Map I’m the Map I’m the Map I’m the Map,” so you’re sort of on your own. And when you come right down to it, reading poems to your adorable offspring is, like breastfeeding, much harder than you think. When I first tried to introduce my daughter to the wonders of verse, I thought I would kick things off with a couple of haikus, mostly because they are super-short, so she wouldn’t have time to run away. I picked up a collection by Basho, the magnificent Japanese poet of the 17th century, opened the book at random, and flipped to this:Nothing in the cryof cicadas suggests theyare about to dieUmmm. Gosh, I thought . . . impermanence, death, a melancholy beauty—couldn’t we wait until kindergarten before we got into all that? (Now, if only it was the Map who was about to croak . . . ) I flipped around, and up came this little gem:Whore and monk, we sleepunder one roof together, moon in a field of cloverUh, no. Won’t be reading that one...Read More...

    Childhood And Poetry
    2007-05-03 08:14:01
Pablo Eliecer Neftali Neruda speculates on the origin of his poetry: One time, investigating in the backyard of our house in Temuco the tiny objects and minuscule beings of my world, I came upon a hole in one of the boards of the fence. I looked through the hole and saw a landscape like that behind our house, uncared for, and wild. I moved back a few steps, because I sensed vaguely that something was about to happen. All of a sudden a hand appeared, a tiny hand of a boy about my own age. By the time I came close again, the hand was gone, and in its place there was a marvelous white sheep. The sheep’s wool was faded. Its wheels had escaped. All of this only made it more authentic. I had never seen such a wonderful sheep. I looked back through the hole but the boy had disappeared. I went into the house and brought out a treasure of my own: a pinecone, opened, full of odor and resin, which I adored. I set it down in the same spot and went off with the sheep. I never saw either the h

understanding relationship between Sufism and poetry
    2007-05-01 05:45:00
Dana Wilde in a draft fashion has outlined ideas toward a basic understanding of the relationship between Sufism and poetry, with an exposition of basic ideas about what poetry is and does, and might do. i quote only critical areas.Poetry & Sufism: A Few Generalities: It's not surprising that Sufis place so much emphasis on music and especially poetry in their teachings and their understanding of the Way to reunion with the Divine. The general Sufi sense of what reality consists in is inherently poetic; it seems not only to parallel the cosmos that a poetic imagination, in the most general terms, conceives, but really seems to embody that version of reality. All poetry is inherently mystical. In the first and most basic way, its primary aim is to communicate at nonrational levels. Metaphors exist to convey, or evoke, or create sensibilities that cannot be conveyed or created using direct terms. For our purposes, this means metaphors evoke "feelings" in the range of emotions, but also

    Hiding in Poetry
    2007-03-20 07:59:00
Hiding in PoetryI burn like a furnaceFor you as I waitI ran from my memoryBut I could not escapeIt’s true that I feel like a foolFor falling for youI love you, but I don’t know whyI know I seem crazy to say what I doBut maybe I’m crazy from thinking of youThe moment I laid in your armsThey could do me no harmI felt for you more than you knew--Griffin HouseThere's a tension between the reality of poetry and the reality of daily life. It's fallacious to assume that art is always autobiographical. My dad recently made that mistake after reading some of my lyrics: "Is there something we need to talk about?"Yet I'd guess that the majority of singer-songwriters write primarily about themselves, and I'm no exception. While taping the show for Chicago Acoustic Underground, Michael asked me who This is Not a Love Song is about--laughing, I told him that the information is top secret. Songwriters are experts at obfuscation: I've written autobiographical songs that disguise themselves
