Di negara berkembang penyebaran terjadi karena sumber air terkontaminasi kotoran manusia.Gejala klinisGejala pada anak-anak biasanya ringan, timbul 3 sampai 5 hari sesudah terinfeksi. Gejala ini berupa malaise, demam ringan, sakit kepala, nyeri menelan dan muntah. Anak akan sembuh dalam 24 sampai 72 jam. Penyakit yang lebih berat akan muncul pada anak yang lebih tua atau dewasa.
