The lines of the world so cleanly defined:
clouds crisp-edged, each leaf exactly in its place.
One of those almost perfect, late summer beauties.
It was like one of those days
we'd pile into the truck in cutoffs and flipflops,
ten of us, or more, with a hibachi and burgers and chips.
We'd go to Nepaug, and skitter down the steep slope to the river,
drape ourselves on the huge warm boulders,
take beer from the stash in the cool crevices
between the rocks.
The water was icy and happy rushing by us
on our hot, hard islands.
By the end of the day, we were satisfied with ourselves,
sunburnt and drunk, our day well-spent.
Today was one of those days like that.
Except four of us are long dead,
and one more is about to be.
She is lying in the hospital, inert,
draped in pointless wires and useless tubes
that cannot compensate for lost grey matter;
her skull and her brain scrambled together
