| Mosquito population higher than last year | | 2008-07-14 09:53:00 | | Mosquitoes and Canadian summers go hand-in-hand, but those who feel their hands have been busier than usual slapping away the pesky insects aren't imagining things.
Experts across the country say there has been a recent surge in the mosquito population, thanks to large amounts of rain a few weeks ago. But part of the perception the mosquitoes are out in droves is also due to a delayed season.

| | World Population Day 2008 | | 2008-07-11 08:21:00 | | World Population Day is an annual event, observed on July 11, which seeks to raise awareness of global population issues. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987, approximately the date on which the world's population reached five billion people.«In 1968, world leaders proclaimed that individuals have a basic human right to determine freely and responsibly the number and timing of their children. Forty years later, modern contraception remains out of reach for hundreds of millions of women, men and young people. This year’s World Population Day reaffirms the right of people to plan their families. It encourages activities, events and information that will help make this right real – especially for those who often have the hardest time getting the information and services they need to plan their families, such as marginalized populations and you | | By: Nothingandall | | |

| Some data on Age of Conan European servers population | | 2008-07-03 16:21:00 | | Age of Conan Primetime population, 1-3 July 2008 (Europe) Inserito originariamente da Abriael On June the 30th Funcom published a quite boastful press release, sporting numbers pointing to 700000 accounts created on Age of Conan. What funcom (conveniently?) failed to show, was the number of accounts that were renewed after the first free month. It isn't a mistery that Age of Conan suffers from several problems, many of which seem, at least to me and many others, quite gamebreaking, expecially now that i'm level 80 and i reached the "endgame". Quite a lot of people seem to be quitting the game, for good or to come back at a later time, and the lack of Funcom's feedback about retained accounts seem to confirm this trend. In the world of PR, any number that a company doesn't boast is quite probably a number such company doesn't want people to see.Xfire provides hard data on the minutes played by the users of their service (8000 of which play AoC each day, making for a very viable | | By: Classy Gamer | | |

| South African Court: Chinese Population to be Reclassified as “Black” | | 2008-06-19 05:30:09 | | There are about 200,000 ethnic Chinese in South Africa. During apartheid, they were discriminated against because they were classified as people of mixed race. Today, the Chinese are generally considered white — a misclassification that is, ironically, disqualifying them from benefits and protections guaranteed by ANTI-apartheid laws.
So, how should South Africa rebalance this inequality? BBC [...]

| | Life expectancy worsening for large segment of the US population | | 2008-04-22 07:40:39 | | One of the major aims of the U.S. health system is improving the health of all people, particularly those segments of the population at greater risk of health disparities. In fact, overall life expectancy in the U.S. increased more than seven years for men and more than six years for women between 1960 and 2000. Now, a new, long-term study of mortality trends in U.S. counties over the same four decades reports a troubling finding: These gains are not reaching many parts of the country; rather, the life expectancy of a significant segment of the population is declining or at best stagnating.

| | US Leads World in Prison Population | | 2008-03-03 02:48:14 | |
In a recently released report, the United States is ranked number one in the world for the largest prison population in both number and percentage. I know we are supposed to be a world leader, but this isn't something where we should be leading. No matter how you look at it the ranking is sad, but there are some details that should be taken into account. The article states that China, although more populous, finishes a distant second. The article fails to mention how many Chinese prisoners get executed. Maybe they have less of a prison population because more inmates are executed. How about fair treatment? I know our prisons are no picnic, but there are many horror stories of inhumane and abusive treatment in prisons around the world. I'd be willing to bet our prisons are the most humane in the world. I would also be willing to bet we have the least amount of innocent people in prison. Our system isn't perfect, but we would have to be at the top of the list of countries | | By: Miscellaneous Reflexions | | |

| | | | POPULATION CONTROL OF BANANA PLANT | | 2007-12-14 20:14:00 | | Banana plants that are allowed to grow and applied with inputs should be those which can bear quality fruit. Quality fruits come normally from healthy plant. Weak and disease-infected plants bear fruits of inferior quality, which is unacceptable for export. They just complete intakes of nutrients, water and sunlight with the healthy plants.Clumping and over shading are the results of overpopulated areas. Fruits are more likely to get bruised. Aerial spray is intercepted by many overlapping canopies of older plants, thereby, leaving younger plants unprotected to sigatoka. Uncontrolled location of follower would destroy the desirable planting pattern which may reduce efficiency in operation.Types of Population ControlPopulation control is composed of two (2) closely related operations, namely:1.Sucker pruning2.ReplantingSucker pruning is eliminating undesired followers and having one follower only in every mat to become as the next production unit. | | | Commercial Real Estate: The Importance of Population Trends | | 2007-11-18 22:55:00 | | While commercial real estate can be an excellent investment, it’s all but impossible to succeed in this competitive environment without some sort of game plan. The most successful professional real estate investors are those who are able to look at a given area and accurately predict which parts of a given city are likely to experience the most growth in relation to other areas in or near that city. Those who are able to gauge such trends can enjoy enormous advantages in the real estate investment marketplace. One of the major advantages of this approach is the investor’s ability to often purchase properties at significant discounts to their future, improved market values. One example of this in urban areas is where some neighborhoods go into decline over a period of years. Property values decline, but local populations remain high. Should the city council decide to “re-zone” or offer incentives to developers to rehabilitate the neighborhood, savvy investors have an opportunity | | By: All of Real Estate | | |

| | | Haredim deliver population boom to West Bank | | 2007-08-21 00:43:38 | | The settler population is growing twice as fast as the rest of the country every year, and the ultra-Orthodox community is responsible for approximately half its annual growth. In the last year, the settler population has grown by 5.45 percent, from 260,932 to 275,156. The growth rate in the ultra-Orthodox Beitar Ilit and Modi'in Ilit is higher than most places in Israel. Modi'in Ilit's population, some 40,000, grows annually by about 11 percent (this year it has grown by 12.5 percent). Beitar Ilit's population, some 35,000, grows annually by some 10 percent - five to six times more than Jerusalem and Tel Aviv's population growth respectively and twice as much as the growth of many other settlements.

| | Morocco Facts: Population distribution | | 2007-07-20 03:04:00 | | "In 2008, the world reaches an invisible but momentous milestone: For the first time in history, more than half its human population, 3.3 billion people, will be living in urban areas. By 2030, this is expected to swell to almost 5 billion. Many of the new urbanites will be poor. Their future, the future of cities in developing countries, the future of humanity itself, all depend very much on decisions made now in preparation for this growth."Ever wondered where most Moroccans live? Well according to Moncef Fadili, a UN housing expert, six out of every ten Moroccans live in urban areas. The problem with this is that they live in areas where poverty and exclusion are rife and unemployment rate reaches 16%. Speaking to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) State of World Population Report (2007), Mr. Fadili listed the main development programs adopted by Morocco: e "Millennium Goals development," "Free-Slum cities program", and the large-scale anti-poverty program "the National Init | | By: THE VIEW FROM FEZ | | |
| | | | Anger Grows at US Jail Population | | 2007-07-09 14:02:00 | | BBC NewsThe jail population in the United States is expected to reach 2 million on Tuesday, prompting a wave of protests across America. An explosion in inmate numbers in recent years means that although the US makes up 5% of the total global population, it now accounts for 25% of the world's prisoners.About 1.3 million of the current jail population have been imprisoned for non-violent crimes, usually drug offences.Studies have shown that in cities such as Baltimore and Washington at least half of all young black men are either in prison, on parole or on probation. Jenny Gainsborough, of the research organisation, Sentencing Project, said she hoped Tuesday's protests would highlight the need for reform to stop the upward spiral in the prison population."We just want people to be aware of the huge numbers of people who are being locked up and the contrast between the US and other western industrialised democracies. -----------------------------------------------It's so easy to go to | | By: Elder Abuse | | |

| | German population goes down | | 2007-01-08 03:23:00 | | Germany, with one of the lowest birth rates in Europe, suffered another drop in population last year as deaths outpaced births and the number of immigrants declined again, the Federal Statistics Office said today. The population fell by about 150,000 in 2006 to 82.31 million after declining by 144,000 in 2005 to 82.44 million, the office said. The drop in 2006 marked the third time in the last quarter century that Germany's net population shrunk. The office estimated the number of births in 2006 had fallen to between 670,000 and 680,000, a record low since measuring began in 1946. That was also down from 686,000 in 2005. The number of deaths was steady at between 820,000 and 830,000.Fewer immigrants came to Germany in 2006 and more Germans left their country. The net gain in immigration versus emigration was down to about 20,000 to 30,000 in 2006 from a net gain of 79,000 in 2005.Germany's population has been shrinking for more than 30 years and there are 3.3 million fewer Germans than in 1972.Economists have warned that unless Germany's demographic trend is reversed, Europe's largest economy will go into terminal decline, with pensions and healthcare costs soaring as the average age gets higher and higher. The government introduced subsidies to working mothers in January with the hope it would raise the birth rate. | | By: World News, News Updates, Current Events, News Art | | |
