    Shipping Up to Portland
    2008-08-21 10:02:00
Clay Buchholz may have made his final start for the Red Sox in 2008, as he was optioned to the Portland Sea Dogs after last night's latest disaster, an 11-6 loss to the Orioles at Camden Yards. No replacement for him has been named yet, and the Red Sox will call up someone tomorrow. It was the 7th straight loss for Buchholz, after the Red Sox staked him to a 4-0 lead after two innings. It was also the third straight game the Sox scored him runs in the first, and he wound up losing all three. Here's the ugly truth of Buchholz's last nine starts since his recall from Pawtucket: 42 innings, 62 hits, 27 walks, 39 strikeouts, 9.21 ERA, no wins. Yikes. It's the best thing for the kid right now. His confidence is just about shot. You could see once the Orioles started rallying in the second for three that the game was heading downhill fast for him. Buchholz will go down and work with Portland's pitching coach on getting a number of things fine tuned. It wouldn't surprise me if he spends the re...

Buchholz Demoted To Double A Portland...Orioles 11 Red Sox 6
    2008-08-21 04:27:00
The Boston Red Sox, who were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night by a score of 11-6, have demoted pitcher Clay Buchholz to their Double A Portland club. It's clear to all of us that he is just not ready to perform at the major league level. Here's what he said after learning his well-deserved fate... "...but the last couple starts, it's hard to think they can give me any more opportunities than they have in this stretch, especially with only a month and a half left in the season and the pennant race as close as it is now. You've got to send guys out there that you believe are going to go out there and give you a win or give you six, seven innings, and I haven't been doing that. So I hate to say it was the right decision, but I believe it was."Peter here, and it was. Clay will work with a familiar face, at least to him...Portland pitching coach Mike Cather, who has worked with him in the past. With 35 games left to go in the regular season, an automatic loss every fifth ga...

Recalling Fondly Old Town Pizza in Portland, OR
    2008-05-19 01:42:22
If you get the chance to visit Portland Oregon, be sure to visit Old Town Pizza.click here to see larger imageNestled on a side street in Portland's old town, you will find Old Town Pizza in a unassuming building with obviously aging architecture. As you walk inside - there is an air of bygone days. You can almost feel the presence of the once vibrant inhabitants that walked under the old growth timber beams framing it's 2nd floor, or hear an echo of their footsteps and distant laughter from the working men who threw back a couple - drinking their modest ales on their retreat homeward. As history has unfolded, a slightly more wicked slew of personal accounts from the early 1900's surrounds these grounds where Old Town Pizza sits. The tales are numerous, Apparently many a sailer was hijacked, while consuming their beverages or a warm meal, or talking up a pretty painted lady , seated above the tunnels in pubs--- all at once a trap door (a.k.a "Deadfall") would open up in ...

Seven homeless arrested at Portland OR protest
    2008-05-11 09:08:44
"You may be giving up, buddy, but I'm not." that's what homeless leader Larry Reynolds told Portland Mayor Potter, after the mayor refused to lift the ban on camping and pointed instead to the city' ten year plan to end homelessness. If that's not good enough, the mayor had said, I'm giving up.Ten year plans don't mean much when you are homeless NOW.Reynolds and others had set up a tent city protest on the sidewalk near city hall. The protesters were arrested for resisting arrest. Check out the post by Amy Ruiz at Blogtown.pdx as well as the more mainstream story and background at Portland Mercury. Portland Hands Heat 12th Straight Loss
    2008-01-19 02:36:00
It actually looked like we might win a game for once. DWade was on fire, scoring 20 points in the 3rd quarter. The team was in sync, the D was stepping up, and the crowd was electric. Then came the 4th quarter and a whopping 6 points through 8 minutes. The result was another disappointing defeat as the Heat fell short to the Portland Trail Blazers 98-91.Wade returned to top form tonight, after struggling in recent games with a myriad of injuries. He finished the game with 37 points and yes, 2 3- pointers. I've been critical of his hesitation to launch the 3s in the past, so it's nice to see him make a pair. He also kept his turnovers to a minimum. It's a shame his excellent performance was wasted yet again, especially because of how well the team played in the 3rd. I agree with Wade's assessment that this was the best basketball seen in Miami since the '05-'06 season.Shaq had his 2nd straight 20/10 game coming off a hip bursitis injury. I have to say he looks pretty good out there . However, he really isn't effective for 4 quarters a game anymore. I would consider playing him only 3-4 minutes in the 1st and 3rd quarters and then playing him extensively in the 4th to maximize his effectiveness at the end of the game. Too often he just fades away. The reason the Heat lost was basically the same reason why this team is 8-31. There's nobody else out there to help Dwyane and Shaquille (and I say Shaq only when he is actually useful). Ricky Davis usually scores in double digits but he misses so many bad shots that I wonder where all the points came from. Cook got some playing time, but only was able to drop a pair of buckets (although one was a late 3, man that kid is clutch). The season is somehow only about halfway over. To me it seems like it has dragged on for month after painful month. All that's left to look forward to is February's trade deadline and then the NBA lottery....

Portland Oregon to Sell “Green” Christmas Trees
    2007-11-27 19:18:50
Some Christmas tree growers in Portland Oregon are now setting up a rating system of how “green” a Christmas tree is. We are not talking about fake trees here, as ridiculous as that would be, we are talking about real, growing, natural trees. That is even more ridiculous. Picking a Christmas tree is typically a matter [...]...

Portland: Everyday is a Beer Fest
    2007-06-22 03:14:00
Portland aka Beervana is so rich with microbreweries, pub crawls, brew tour trips, and craft beer samplings are just a hops (pun intended), skip, and a jump away. It seems there's a new place of interest popping up every week or month, so challenging yourself is always in order. This week's excursion began when my friend and co-worker Alex from Belmont Station called me up and said "Let's go try some beers." No problem. We decided to make our first stop the furthest from home, as driving after a few is never a good idea. Destination #1: Max's Fanno Creek Brewery. Max's lies in the heart of downtown Tigard, a short drive from Portland from the Pacific Highway (aka 99-E). Tigard itself is a quaint suburban town with little to offer outside of the typical strip malls and corporate impact of big business. Max's, on the other hand, was an oasis of handcrafted delight. Alex and I caught the proprietor himself pouring pints, and we were able to get a tour of the brewery and were grac...

A Squirrel in Portland's Washington Park
    2007-05-19 00:34:00
I saw this little guy digging around the park while I was in Portland earlier this week. I think it must be fed regularly by visitors b/c it came right up to me expectantly, then didn't seem at all bothered about me getting quite close and taking this video. Even though I grew up on the East Coast, being in Southern California for a few years has caused me to realize I took this kind of thing for granted before.Finky...
