Peter John Murphy (born 11 July 1957, near Northampton, England), is the vocalist of the rock group Bauhaus who later went on to release a number of solo albums, such as Deep and Love Hysteria. Thin, with prominent cheekbones, a rich voice, and a penchant for gloomy poetics, Murphy is often called the "Godfather of Goth."Although he had grown up in an Irish-Catholic household, Murphy embraced Islam in the 1990s, eventually moving to Turkey with his wife. Portrait
    2008-08-12 00:00:00
In my mind, the hand of inspiration Flies upon the canvas of imagination And creates with crystal precision there A vision of Beauty beyond compare. Softly tumbling tresses spun From shining strands of summer sun That quietly cascade in rivulets of gold To splash upon awaiting shoulders. Eyes that have never seen before One who shall see them forevermore, Twin sapphire stars set against A flawless sky of satin skin. There, slips the faintest ghost of a smile From lips of a shape most beguiling. One, a crimson cupid's bow Crowns the crescent one below. Flushed and full, they meet as if Pushed into a gentle kiss. The flowing curve of a glowing cheek Frames a portrait of Beauty so unique, The highest place She shall always hold Inside the gallery of my soul. Let Her be known to all those whom Look for Her in my nom de plume.

    Spiritual Portrait of Mevlana Rumi
    2008-07-17 15:10:17
Study me as much as you like, you will never know me,for I differ a hundred ways from what you see me to be.Put yourself behind my eyes, and see me as I see myself,For I have chose to dwell in a place you cannot see.- Mevlana Rumi in Divan of Shams i Tabrizi -Rumi in his eloquent words suggests us that our 'true self' can never be seen. Our true nature is not meant for our physical eyes, it can only be felt / seen through the eyes of the inner heart. Each human being is such an unique mystery! Because of that uniqueness Rumi says that only to see and understand someone truly we have to put ourselves behind the eyes of 'the one'. Entering into the highly esoteric human field of 'the one' is what enables us to mysteriously become 'you', to become 'the friend', to become a true lover. Its a timeless secret.Spring overall. But inside usthere's another unity.Behind each eye here, one glowing water.Every forest branch moves differentlyin the breeze, but as they sway, they connect at the roots.

Not bad at all, but taking the band's influences into consideration, you cannot help thinking that this choice is somewhat odd.+ Some People (Cliff Richard cover)

Shams of Tabriz | Spiritual Portrait

Shams of Tabriz: A Fire of Roses by Zedmedium: graphite1.The extra-ordinary spiritual portrait of Shams is by artist and darvish, Zed. During the birthing process of the painting, the artists heart was open to Shams e Tabriz's spirit-guidance. It is not simply a portrait, but embodies a higher meditative quality of the boundless spirit of Shams, the mad lover of God. (for larger version of the art, click on the picture above)My deep appreciation to Zed for sharing this beautiful art work of heart. A Portrait of the Artist ...
    2008-04-13 09:21:00
Jess - a self-portraitLumen recently caught up with artist Jess Stephens, Cultural Co-ordinator at Cafe Clock. Here's what Jess has to say about her role at the Clock and life in Fez:Before settling in Fez, I was a practising artist and teacher in Barcelona, Northern Spain, for eight years, involved in exhibitions and creative projects. Catalonia's capital city is rich in culture platforms and programmes.I'm here in Morocco to realise a desire to set up an artist's residency programme in a rich and interesting culture, where visual artists, musicians and the literary can be inspired and informed, exchange ideas and share knowledge.I first came to Morocco with this dream in 2005, and spent my adventures investigating potential tranquil locations close to an imperial city. Fantastic Fez being one of the capital cities for artisans and large enough to house the necessary requirements for my residency project, it was not long into my research that I discovered the nearby old Jewish town of

Portrait Lenses for the Canon EOS system
    2008-03-23 13:26:00
Probably the first thing to be said about portrait lenses is that you can take a portrait with just about any lens ever made. However some lenses tend to give better results than others, which is the point of this article. It's mostly about perspective. For "normal" portraits, does the lens render the image the way that you normally experience it - in other words does the portrait actually look like the person being portrayed? If it does then the lens might be considered a good portrait lens. If it doesn't, it would be more of a "special effects" lens. Now some people think that it's the focal length of the lens that governs perspective, but they'd be wrong. If you compare normal rectilinear lenses (i.e. not with fisheye lenses), the perspective is determined only by your distance from the subject. The size of the subject is determined by the focal length. So if you are 100ft from a deer and you take a picture with a 20mm lens and a 200mm lens, the deer will be 10x larger with the longe

    Portrait of the successful investor
    2008-02-14 09:12:00
What works for them can work for you“What's the secret to investing success?” It's a difficult-if not impossible-question to answer. Investing isn't really about secrets. It takes a good deal of research and discipline, a fair amount of patience, and tolerance for mistakes to make a successful investor. That said, if you sit down and talk with some of the more successful investors, you begin to see some characteristics they have in common:A principled approach Before they even start to invest, successful investors have given a lot of thought to the investment process. They've established clear, practical principles to guide their investment decisions and portfolio strategies. Establishing these principles before constructing the portfolio makes it easier to achieve the desired risk/return profile and avoid financial mistakes.A disciplined mindsetSuccessful investors don't pay a lot of attention to the market. Certainly they're aware of long-term trends. But they don't obsess about s

Portrait of the Artist as a Dhimmified Man
    2008-01-11 05:05:00
Pajamas Media - The current level of self-censorship is deeply problematic. “Their eagerness to assume the role of subjugated infidels living under Islamic rule can only demoralize the population and embolden the extremists.”The art that you do not see reflects what everyone already sees. And what we see is the preemptive surrender of public freedoms in the name of appeasing the continent’s restive Muslim underclass.Grayson Perry, a Turner Prize recipient and England’s most famous cross-dressing potter, has been heralded for his controversial explorations of religious imagery, which include a vase entitled “Transvestite Brides of Christ” and a portrayal of the Virgin Mary that is best left to the imagination. Yet apparently there are some boundaries that even groundbreaking artists dare not cross.“I’ve censored myself,” Perry told the Times, admitting that he treads lightly around radical Islam. “The reason I haven’t gone all out attacking Islamism in my art is because I feel real fear that someone will slit my throat.”

Isabel Archer: Friend or Foe? (Book Review of "The Portrait of a Lady"
    2007-10-23 21:11:30
Book Review: "The Portrait of a Lady" by Henry James (American novelist), published 1881Henry James succeeds in ushering our frustration with Isabel Archer from shortly after we met her, to the very end. His book ends rather too-life like, without resolution, without hope for the future, leaving the reader’s understanding of Isabel "in air". Or, as he says in his notes "en l’air".*Isabel seems like the perfect heroine. She is poised, intelligent, beautiful, admirable, or so everyone tells us. But her actions and her own words hardly reinforce this view of her. In her own words, her thoughts are small and limited, and yet everyone observes that her ideas have no bound. So who is right? Unfortunately, author Henry James never helped us determine the answer. This is the third time I've read about Miss Archer. I say Miss Archer for to me she will always be that. Mrs. Osmond, as she later evolved to be, seemed always to be a wrong note in my ear. Miss Archer has potential, opportunity, and adventure in her name. Mrs. Osmond is a trapped, sad, conventional woman. I suppose the true tragedy of this book is that our heroine was in fact both women simultaneously. Perhaps Henry James understood women better than I thought when he poignantly portrayed a woman’s double nature. Her double reality. Her double experience. How many of us are both Miss Archer and Mrs. Osmond? How many of us have unlimited potential that we steadfastly keep under lock and key? Why do we do this? Is it because we do not know our heart? James didn’t think so. It seemed that Isabel (for now we must admit she is both women), clearly knew her heart. Sure, she fell victim at times but she clearly knew what she wanted when she wanted it. I will not pretend to understand what it was she wanted. Three readings of this novel still leave me in the dark. It seems that most of her friends, perhaps all of her friends in the story also never really knew what she wanted. That was little matter to Isabel. In

    Review: Anthropics Portrait Professional 6
    2007-10-17 21:25:00
Photo retouching is a time-consuming and highly skilled process that usually requires years of practice and considerable proficiency with applications such as Adobe Photoshop. With Portrait Professional, you can achieve similar magazine cover-quality portraits by simply marking out a few key points and moving some slider controls. The application is based on a model of human faces that has been pre-trained by examining photos of hundreds of people, of varying levels of attractiveness, in well-shot portraits. With this database of facial knowledge, the software takes your original photo and makes adjustments to balance and subtly shape the subject's facial features while also improving on lighting and reducing camera defects.Paul Monckton, Personal Computer WorldFor more information : pcw

The photo in this entry is Go Spider Go! Photographed and edited by me, Lynda Walldez. If you've been around for a while you know how much I love drawing. I enjoy illustrating just about anything, although I'm not too good with drawing anything that takes much of my own imagination to create. I have gradually gotten back into the groove of drawing, using all kinds of media. My tool of choice is pencil though, the most versatile for me using a range between B and B8 with an H2 on the side. I am now offering portrait drawings for everyone to enjoy. Below is an example of my drawing style. It is a portrait piece I did for my friend Jennie. The drawings I offer are drawn using professional Staedtler pencils on cream Strathmore 400 Series 80 lb. paper, no more than 8x10. I'm the kind of person that enjoys completing my drawings in one sitting, which is usually several hours. If you would like to see other art I have done you can go here, here, and here. Each drawing is $5 including...

    New track by Northern Portrait...
    2007-08-14 13:22:00
My recent favorite band, Northern Portrait continues to impress me. This new track is once again a wonderful, catchy and charming indie pop tune with lots of jangling guitars. A fourth track is on its way, which (still) is about all the information I can find.+ What Happens Next?Update: The band has sent me a message with a little info that I thought I'd share with you. Northern Portrait is a trio (all members have experience from other bands) that got together/assembled at the beginning of July to record a few tracks written by front man Stefan. The songs are all being recorded, mixed and mastered in his flat, but hopefully someday the band will get the opportunity to do it all in more professional surroundings. Unfortunately the band is not yet planning to perform live!Update: The songs are now uploaded to Last.fm and it looks like the EP is/will be called The Fallen Aristocracy.

Portrait Of An Artist: Pavel Bure
    2007-08-03 18:33:00
It's Friday, it's the off-season, and it's a slow news day. Because of this, I'll take the time to explore a little bit of recent hockey history to pass the time. The careers of most great artists can be divided into "periods," long or brief spans of time in which they explored different styles and techniques and then moved on to something greater or different. Picasso had, among others, his "Blue Period" and then later his better-known "Analytic Cubism Period." Pollack had his "Springs Period" and later his famous "Drip Period."If you consider great goal-scorers in the National Hockey League to be artists, then Pavel Bure should be considered the greatest hockey artist of the 1990s. His creativity and skill with a puck outclassed his opponents year in and year out. In two consecutive seasons (1992-93 and 1993-94), the young Bure scored 60 goals with the Vancouver Canucks. In 1997-98, after a lockout and some injury problems, he scored 51. All great artists must change their surr

    Northern Portrait...
    2007-08-01 09:57:00
It's almost surreal. Monday morning I had never heard of Northern Portrait, but 48 hours and 2 songs later I'm in complete awe. The first output Crazy blew me away and the second track by the band I Give You Two Seconds To Entertain Me almost did the same. It's difficult to imagine that this "trend" will continue, though we should find out soon, as more songs are on the way. Labeled by the band itself as "sophisticated guitar pop" - so true! I've asked (or call it beg if you prefer) for more info on the band, because I simply refuse to accept that something so genuinely incredible like this can emerge out of nothing!+ I Give You Two Seconds To Entertain Me

    Family Portrait
    2007-07-22 07:28:00
This is Jacqui's rendition of our family. Ok, from left to right...Jacqui: "The one with curly hair Mom! I have a serious face on my picture 'cause Kyle is hurtin' my ears wif all his cryin' an screamin'."Me: "See - Your hair is 'flippy' on da sides. Dat one's you!" Apparently, my 'flippy' hair looks an awful lot like elephant ears.Daddy: "Da tall one wif straight hairs. Dat's Daddy."Kyle: "Da baby one wif straight hairs. Right dere. See... his mouf's a circle 'cause he's allays cryin' and makin' allota noise like dis: 'WAHHHH! WAHHHH! WAHHHH!"And last but not least, our kitty, Jingle: "Her feets are up here and her body's way over dere because she's stretchin'. She's smilin' cause she's happy. She's happy 'cause Kyle is holdin' hands wif Daddy and not squishin' her. Dose round circles are spots. Jingle don't have spots. She have stripes. Stripes are just too hard to draw good."Also note the detailed depiction of eyelashes and belly buttons

    Portrait of a Gardener.
    2007-07-10 22:07:00
Today, July 11th ...The register of deaths at the Magistro della Sanita of Milan records that the painter Guiseppe Arcimboldo died on this day in 1593, at about 66 year of age, from kidney stones. Arcimboldo is best known for his much-imitated ‘portraits’ made from carefully assemble fruits, flowers, vegetables, and other foods. It is possible that his idea of creating pictures in this way was inspired by dishes at actual banquets held by various artists of his time, who made compositions out of real food. The paintings are surreal, before there was an official Surrealist movement, and are full of allegory and symbolism which is lost to many of us today (I include myself here), but which would have been clear to his patrons and contemporaries. They are also clever and fun, and we can all appreciate that. My favourite is “The Vegetable Gardener”. Or should it be “The Vegetable Bowl”? Paintings sometimes give us good information about food and dining in previous times. It

    Oxford Muse: self-portrait
    2003-10-17 12:05:00
I wrote the following self-portrait for Oxford Muse - a charitable organisation which is trying to create a human map of Oxford by writing portraits of the people who live here. Their website will explain in more detail if you're interested. Last Saturday night, while most people in college were revelling in the Back to School bop, I just sat down and started writing (prompted by a few questions) and created my self-portrait. Had I been in a different mood, it could have turned out quite different. It is quite long, but here goes anyhews:This is DogWhen I was a child, I used to be dependent on a stuffed toy called "Dog" - a much loved, but worn out Snoopy. He was always with me as a comforter. Without him I found it difficult to sleep, I felt alone and helpless without him. I remember one weekend when he was left behind in Dalmellington after my mum's yoga class. He was sitting on top of that piano, and I was crying my eyes out all weekend. I think someone must have made a special tr
