NCAA Second Round Previews - Sunday
    2008-03-22 18:28:47
East RegionRaleigh, NC 5:20 PM1. North Carolina vs 9. ArkansasFirst Round ReviewMount St Mary's wanted to run with North Carolina and the Tar Heels licked their chops; UNC cruised to a 1st round win. Arkansas kept Indiana at arms length after about 10 minutes of back and forth. Swingman Sonny Weems had 31 points in dispatching the Hoosiers. For Arkansas to Win:They have to play their best game of the year. They need a shooting performance like they had against Indiana on Friday (54% FG, 47% 3PT, 79% FT). Defensively, they have to keep Hansbrough off the boards as much as possible. For North Carolina to Win:Keep doing what you do. Feed Hansbrough the ball inside. Push the ball on defensive stops. Use your superb depth.I like North Carolina in this game. It is essentially a home game for them and Ty Lawson is finally back 100% and in the flow of the offense. We get the first ACC-SEC match up of the Tournament and this one looks to be in the ACC's favor.Prediction: North CarolinaEas

si.comEast RegionRaleigh, NC 7:001. North Carolina (32-2) vs 16. Mt St Marys (18-14)The Mount Saint Marys Mountaineers survived the opening round game in Dayton beating Coppin State on Tuesday night. The "Mount" as it is called finished 4th in the Northeast conference and plays good defense but struggles rebounding the ball. Tyler Hansbrough should have a feast inside.Prediction: North CarolinaRaleigh, NC 9:308. Indiana (25-7) vs 9. Arkansas (22-11)The Hoosiers received a lower seed than expected at 8, but I think the committee was looking at the Indiana team now as opposed to the team with Kelvin Sampson. Since Verizon's best customer got canned, Indiana is just 3-3 with losses to Big 10 bottom feeders Penn State and Minnesota. Indiana is led by probably the 3rd best freshman in the nation, Eric Gordon, on the outside and senior DJ White on the inside.Arkansas made the SEC Tournament finals cementing their bid after finishing second in the SEC West regular season. onOne Software Previews New FocalPoint Software Plug-in at WPPI 2008
    2008-03-17 15:35:00
onOne Software, Inc., previews today at WPPI 2008 its new software plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop Elements — FocalPoint 1.0. onOne Software's FocalPoint is a selective focus and vignetting plug-in designed to help photographers easily blur and/or vignette areas of an image.Popular among professional wedding, portrait and commercial photographers, the soft defocused look typically produced in camera by using special selective focus or tilt-shift lenses, filters or vignetting hoods can now be created quickly within Photoshop using onOne Software's new FocalPoint. This new plug-in eliminates the need for photographers to purchase, carry and use the accessories mentioned above at the time of the photo shoot and simplifies their ability to produce these effects later in Photoshop. "Our new FocalPoint plug-in gives photographers total control over how they apply creative focusing effects to their image after the image has been shot," said Craig Keudell, president of onOne Softwa

    ACC Tournament Saturday Previews
    2008-03-14 23:57:41
reuters/yahoo#1 North Carolina vs #4 Virginia Tech 1:30 PMPrevious Meetings: UNC (Home) 92-53So far the ACC has held form regarding the top seeds advancing to Saturday. North Carolina destroyed Virginia Tech earlier this year in Chapel Hill. It is hard to blow out a good team in a conference tournament and I expect a close game. I like North Carolina's rebounding ability in this game and that was a big reason for the Hokies win over Miami. North Carolina is challenged for 35min, but pulls away at the end.Prediction; North Carolina#2 Duke vs #3 Clemson 4:00 PMPrevious Meetings: Duke (Home) 93-80Many thought when these two teams met back in January that the Tigers would give Duke a strong run for their money, but the Blue Devils controlled most of the game keeping Clemson at arms length. Duke hit 24 FT and Clemson turned the ball over 20 times in the only meeting of the season. Both teams cruised to relatively easy victories on Friday night, but Clemson will have the shorter turnar

    ACC Tournament Second Round Previews

#9 Florida State vs #1 North Carolina 12PMPrevious Meetings: UNC (Away) 84-73, UNC (Home) 90-77The Seminoles took control early vs Wake Forest on Thursday and never let go. They will face a well rested Tar Heel team who looks to be rounding into top form with NCAAA tourney time just around the corner. The Heels will have too much inside play from Tyler Hansbrough for FSU to overcome. North Carolina cruises to Saturday.Prediction: North Carolina#4 Virginia Tech vs #5 Miami 2:30 PMPrevious Meetings: Miami (Away) 74-71This should be the best match up of the day pitting two teams who were thought to be "football only" additions to the ACC a few years back. The Hurricanes won the only game this year in Blacksburg, but it was Virginia Tech who secured the #4 seed and the first round bye. Miami should be in, but VT probably needs a win or two to help their cause. Sometimes having already played a game can be helpful to that team especially early in the game. I like Miami in this one.Pr

    2008-03-14 07:01:56
E5 South Carolina vs E1 Tennessee 1PMPrevious Meetings: Tenn (Away) 80-56, Tenn (Home) 89-56The Volunteers invade Atlanta fresh off their SEC regular season title and will face a South Carolina club they have beaten twice most recently last Saturday by 33 points. South Carolina's Dave Odom is retiring after this season and is very likely staring at his last game. The Vols should win this one easily.Prediction: TennesseeE3 Vanderbilt vs W2 Arkansas 3:15PMPrevious Meetings: Arkansas (Home) 78-73Since losing 4 of 5 in the middle of the season, Vandy has ripped off 8 wins in their last 10. Meanwhile, Arkansas has lost 5 of their last 8 and is squarely on the NCAA bubble. The Razorbacks won the only meeting of the year in Fayetteville. I think this one could be the best game of the day and will come right down to the wire. I like Vanderbilt's inside/outside combo to be the difference.Prediction: VanderbiltW5 Alabama vs W1 Mississippi State 7:30 PMPrevious Meetings: Miss St (Away) 66-5

Matt Stafford is back and should be much improved over his freshman campaign. The sophomore from Texas should have plenty of options to throw the ball to this year, but the wide receiving corps suffered from the drops big time last year. The Bulldogs have really struggled to establish a consistent ground game in recent years due to lack of cohesion on the offensive line. The biggest acquisition was coach Stacy Searels from LSU. The defense should be stout again led by SS Kelin Joh

Also, the Seminoles have 61 returning letterman and lost just 16 from last years disappointing 7-6 squad. Many feel FSU will have a bounce back year and that this may be Bobby Bowden’s last chance for another national title. I see a few chinks in the FSU armor though beginning at QB. Neither Drew Weatherford nor Xavier Lee has distinguished themselves in their first two years. The running game has been downright awful, but Rick Trickett comes over from West Virginia. Benjarvus Green Ellis returns as one of the better running backs in the SEC that no one knows about. Ogeron has improved the recruiting in Oxford, but the wins have yet to come. Buffalo Bills Positional Previews: Safety

Does Ko fit Fewell's scheme? Note: To view other positional breakdowns, click your desired position. QB, RB, HB, TE, WR, OT, OG/C, DE, DT, OLB, MLB, CB If the free agent visit of Donovin Darius is any indicator, the safety position on Buffalo's roster is yet another area of youth. However, unlike the cornerback position, there is an element of continuity, as the Bills return both of their young starters as well as an underrated reserve. But there's no question - this, experience-wise, is the youngest position on the roster. The starters are second-year players, the top reserve is a third-year guy; there is also a rookie and a converted wideout. Taking that into consideration, it's not a surprise that Darius - a heady veteran - was brought in for a look-see. Positional Goals In Perry Fewell's Cover-2 base defense, the main responsibility of the two safeties is to be the "2" in that name - this means that they will spend the majority of their time play

QB, RB, HB, TE, WR, OT, OG/C, DE, DT, OLB, MLB I write this Bills blog to express my thoughts on the goings-on of my all-time favorite sports franchise; if I didn't do this, my head would explode. So forgive me for the following rant: Ladies and gentlemen, the Buffalo Bills are better off without Nate Clements at cornerback. That might sound insane to most Bills fans - after all, Clements was our best cornerback, and the position is considered by many to be downgraded from last year. Read on - I shall do my best to convince you that not just the team, but the defensive backfield will be improved (eventually) with Clements thieving millions in San Francisco. Positional Goals Again, the Cover-2 defense asks of its corners things that aren't always necessary for basic 4-3 or 3-4 alignments. Buffalo's cornerbacks will be playing short-

QB, RB, HB, TE, WR, OT, OG/C, DE, DT, OLB Ask any NFL expert about the state of the Bills' linebacking corps, and you'll inevitably hear some version of the following question: "How do they replace London Fletcher and Takeo Spikes?" It's true that the two veterans provided a level of leadership that is no longer apparent on the Bills' defense. They were both hard workers and fan favorites, and it's likely that their absence on the roster will have an impact for a while. But a close analysis of what the Bills expect from their linebackers and their current personnel says one thing: Buffalo's linebackers are looking good. With outside linebackers out of the way, let's delve into the middle linebackers on Buffalo's roster. One of the higher-profile defensive tackles in the league, Walker was supposed to make our defensive tackles good again. Now he's likely talked his way out of town - and left our situation exactly where it was last season. But is that necessarily a bad thing? Other than Walker, Buffalo's front office neglected to add any players of significance to a group that was, for the most part, underwhelming last season. Is that insanity? Or is it confidence in our youngsters? Positional Goals Like the team's defensive ends, Buffalo's coaching staff likes to rotate their players at defensive tackle. Without Walker, the team has three players whose skills are fairly complementary that will receive the majority of the playing time. Couple that with the fact that the team

Can Kelsay live up to his $23M contract? Note: To view other positional breakdowns, click your desired position. QB, RB, HB, TE, WR, OT, OG/C Last season, the Buffalo Bills finished with 37.5 team sacks - amongst the most dominant team pass rushes in the league. Why, then, are people worried about a defensive pass rush that has seen little in the way of personnel changeover? Simple - the stats lie. Other than Aaron Schobel's 14 sacks, no other defensive end on the roster finished with more than 6. That's quite the drop-off for a position that will need to be even more effective this coming season. Positional Goals Like it or not, Buffalo's front four - especially the defensive ends (and by extension, the pass rush) - will be the lifeblood of Perry Fewell's defensive scheme. With a linebacking corps and defensive backs that are anything but experienced, the onus will be on our defensive ends to provide both playmaking and leadership. That's a tall or

Can Preston win the RG job? Note: To view other positional breakdowns, click your desired position. QB, RB, HB, TE, WR, OT If you want to blame any position for Buffalo's offensive inefficiencies last year, the easy choice is the offensive line. Riddled with injured vets, green rookies and inferior talent, last year's unit was once again among the worst offensive lines in recent Bills history. But thanks to a $75 million spending spree and better coaching, that should change this coming season. The Bills are bigger, stronger and more athletic up front, and it should allow the team to do a lot more offensively. We continue our examination of the offensive line this morning by taking a look at the interior linemen, i.e. the guards and centers. Positional Goals Much like the offensive tackles, the Bills have built a core of interior linemen that are big, athletic and versatile. The majority of the personnel on this roster can play a multitude of inside posit

Peters could be a Pro Bowl surprise Note: To view other positional breakdowns, click your desired position. QB, RB, HB, TE, WR If you want to blame any position for Buffalo's offensive inefficiencies last year, the easy choice is the offensive line. We start our examination of the offensive line by taking a look at the tackles. Positional Goals When putting together the offense - from the trenches to the skill positions - it is looking like the team was aiming for versatility. The Bills want to be able to beat teams in a variety of ways. That takes a variety of skills from the skill pos

It's Evans - then who? - for the Bills Which player on the Buffalo Bills roster scares opponents most? That question is ridiculously easy to answer: wide receiver Lee Evans. The biggest star on the Bills, Evans enters his fourth season coming off of his break-out year of 82 catches, 1,292 yards and 8 touchdowns. But in order for Evans to continue his improvement and emerge as one of the most dominant wideouts in the league, the rest of the Bills' wide receivers must step up to take pressure off of Evans. Positional Goals Heading into the second season of Steve Fairchild's offensive system, it's clear what the Bills are trying to build at wide receiver: versatility. That's a theme that is prominent throughout the offense as a whole. The team is likely to keep five or six wideouts, and all of them could bring very different skill sets to the offense. The team has receivers who can stretch the field. There are receivers who can make "possession" plays

Neufeld heads a three-way competition For years, the Buffalo Bills have enlisted the services of a big, bruising fullback. We've seen good ones (Sam Gash) and we've seen some pretty bad ones (Daimon Shelton, in my humble opinion, was a waste of a roster spot). The 2007 season, however, marks the end of an era - the Bills will no longer be using a fullback in their running game. Instead, a "new" position has been implemented into Steve Fairchild's offense - the "halfback". Positional Goals Try not to make the mistake of thinking that we'll see something drastically different out of our lead blocker position. Rather than lining up a fullback in our backfield, we'll use tight ends in an H-Back role. The personnel is different, the name of the position is different, but the demands of the position likely won't be drastically changed. They'll still lead our running back through holes. They'll still pick up the blitz. They'll still be lead blockers o

How much will Lynch play? Gone are the days when the Buffalo Bills used the "workhorse" running back. No longer will we see heavy doses of Travis Henry or Willis McGahee. Sheriff Fairchild is in town now, and he prefers diversity in his offense. So rather than having one guy, Buffalo now has a deep stable of backs, with the team poised to (likely) keep four of those on its opening day roster. Positional Goals Last season, Buffalo's running game was extremely one-dimensional. You got what you got with Willis McGahee - lots of plodding and dancing, inconsistent production and few big plays. Now, our running backs can beat you any way imaginable. We can pound it down your throat with Anthony Thomas and Dwayne Wright. We can hit the edges of the defense with Marshawn Lynch. We can throw screen passes, line backs up at wide receiver; we can do pretty much whatever we want. Buffalo will likely try to get the ball to Lynch more often than the other backs, b

It's go time: Losman is "the man" Very much unlike last season, Buffalo's quarterback position appears to be the most settled situation on the team. Give credit where credit is due: J.P. Losman earned his keep, Steve Fairchild and Turk Schonert harnessed his potential and Lee Evans made Losman look good on more than one occasion. The situation is totally different from last season - we have a sure-fire starter, we have a talented rookie and we have a talented veteran backup that the coaching staff likes. What a difference a year makes. Positional Goals Do you all remember John Stockton? The former Utah Jazz point guard is the NBA's all-time leader in assists, and he was made famous for constantly finding his teammates and putting them in position to make plays. A quarterback in Steve Fairchild's offensive system needs to be John Stockton - spreading the wealth, letting the playmakers make the plays and limiting mistakes. Lee Evans will be the Karl Mal

First Drive: 2008 Subaru Tribeca - Previews
    2007-06-02 23:06:31
Previews Although the availability of a “real” SUV in the form of the B9 Tribeca bumped overall Subaru sales past the 200,000-unit mark in 2006, sales of the controversially styled mid-size SUV were considered mediocre. In response, Subaru has brought out a hastily revised version. The new Tribeca (thankfully, the confusing B9 prefix has been dropped for the 2008 model) features fairly comprehensive front and rear styling revisions, replacing the controversial Alfa Romeo–like cues with more conventional treatments that more closely resemble the Chrysler Pacifica, particularly with the badge set within a band of chrome atop the grille. Perhaps Subaru should have called it the Chry-beca. Better, however, is the charming flat-six powerplant, which has been boosted in capacity from 3.0 liters to 3.6 liters in the interests of improved performance and economy, with horsepower and torque bumps to match. Here’s where it gets interesting The flat-six engine (or H6, as
