The Vietnamese Officer Who Ran The Prison Where John McCain Was Held As A POW: "I Can Confirm To You That We Never Tortured Him"
    2008-06-25 16:14:00
BBC News recently interviewed Tran Trong Duyet, a retired Vietnamese military officer.Tran Trong Duyet was the head of the infamous Hoa Lo prison which was the institution where John McCain claims he was brutally beaten and tortured during five-and-a-half years as an American prisoner of war during the Vietnam War.What Tran Trong Duyet told the BBC directly contradicts what McCain has told the people of America. Here are some of his absolutely stunning statements:"But I can confirm to you that we never tortured him. We never tortured any prisoners.""He lies to American voters in order to get their support for his presidential election."And he is not alone in these assertions. None of his fellow POWs ever saw McCain tortured, and most of them are hopping mad at him as you can see from the YouTube clip below:

Jersey Journal: Janiszewski getting out of 'prison' tomorrow
    2008-04-24 18:49:00
Robert C. Janiszewski, the disgraced former Hudson County Executive who has spent the better part of the last three years in prison having admitted to taking $100,000 in bribes, will be released from a halfway house in Albany tomorrow, the Jersey Journal is reporting.Click here for the story. When Janiszewski was sentenced, his attorneys asked for leniency, since the former county exec turned evidence and testimony on others involved in the scandal. But the judge in the case himself turned a deaf ear, instead making his disgust of Janiszewski's actions clear while sentencing him to the maximum federal law allowed."To say that the citizens of New Jersey have become the laughingstock because of widespread corruption in politics is an understatement," federal Judge Joel Pisano said in 2005. "I conclude that the mitigating factors in this case are swept away by the seriousness of the matter."

    Everyone loves Wandsworth Prison
    2008-04-14 02:48:28
Charles Bronson, Britain's notorious inmate, says that Wandsworth Prison is one of the toughest jails he has ever been in.Wandsworth Prison history and factsIn a self-penned book to be published in June, he writes: "Everyone loves Wanno - I don't think so. I've had more kickings in there than I care to remember."And in another paragraph that makes you want to stay on the straight and narrow at all costs, he says: "I would arrive naked in a body belt and the treatment would kick off from one. These blocks were run by a fist of steel. Always the biggest and ugliest screws in the jail. Not one under 6ft."The Companion says...... that Bronson has served more than 30 years in more than 100 jails in the UK, and has spent much of that time in solitary confinement. Originally convicted for his part in an armed robbery in 1974, Bronson was sentenced to seven years but has had his term extended repeatedly. Ludlow prison hangs himself: drug users should not be in jail!
    2008-03-06 21:04:41
Kevin J. Small of Westfield, Massachusetts hanged himself Tuesday at the Hampden County Correctional Center. Mr. Small's suicide was the third at the Ludlow facility in the last five years.Don't blame the jail, though, at least according to spokesman Richard McCarthy: Mr. Small's unit wasn't overcrowded, rounds of his unit had been done every thirty minutes as required, and the screening given him at admission did not indicate he was suicidal.Mr. Small was on the 14th day of a 90 day sentence for possession of drugs. So much wrong with this picture it's hard to know where to start, but let's start with what should be obvious: drug addiction is not a criminal justice problem, it's a public health problem.Pro-incarceration supporters point to a drop in violent crime as reason enough to continue with our current "get tough" policy. But consider this:60% of federal prisoners are drug offenders.Only 3% are violent offenders.Drug offenders in country jails are not violent offenders. It costs

US Leads World in Prison Population
    2008-03-03 02:48:14
In a recently released report, the United States is ranked number one in the world for the largest prison population in both number and percentage. I know we are supposed to be a world leader, but this isn't something where we should be leading. No matter how you look at it the ranking is sad, but there are some details that should be taken into account. The article states that China, although more populous, finishes a distant second. The article fails to mention how many Chinese prisoners get executed. Maybe they have less of a prison population because more inmates are executed. How about fair treatment? I know our prisons are no picnic, but there are many horror stories of inhumane and abusive treatment in prisons around the world. I'd be willing to bet our prisons are the most humane in the world. I would also be willing to bet we have the least amount of innocent people in prison. Our system isn't perfect, but we would have to be at the top of the list of countries

The nation has about 2.3 million people incarcerated. The Pew Center of the States released the report, which says that the 50 states spent $49 billion on incarceration last year. Huh, the tattoo of Wentworth Miller in this series it was took 4 hours to make up process, gosh that so long!In this story series, Dominic Purcell (Lincoln Burrows) who is in prison and sentenced to death row for the murder of the vice president's brother. His brother's(Michael Scotfield) elaborate plan to help him escape his death sentence. Now the show is currently in its third season.

Salt Lake City Realtors saw a measure of justice when 24-year old Jason Hines of Nevada was sentenced for the Auguest 3rd, 2007 shooting of 45 year old real estate agent Tracy Armstrong. Armstrong was shot twice in the chest and once in the neck by Hines at the front desk of Panguitch Lake cabins. Gadgets in TV Shows: Prison Break Boxed In
    2008-01-18 11:45:00
So I've decided to do a new segment on my blog called Gadgets in Movies/TV Shows wherein I attempt to identify the models of the gadgets used in a particular movie or show in case you're interested in buying the same one. First up, we have the recent episode of Prison Break which is boxed in. As you can see, Lincoln has a mobile phone which looks like a Blackberry, there's no doubting the QWERTY keypad and the design but which model is it?Based on the back side of the device and the color of the QWERTY keyboard (see encircled portion), this device is a Blackberry 8700.It's a fairly old model of the Blackberry, released in 2004 and is probably obsolete by now which means you probably won't get the chance to buy the same model, but you could opt for a newer model of the Blackberry like the Blackberry Pearl and the 8300 Curve which as a built-in digital camera.Credit Photo: MobileGazette.com

    Resignation Reality: Escaping My Prison
    2008-01-10 19:42:00
One of my favorite books of all time is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. If you've never read the book or seen the movie you should. Why? Because I liken the story to what I and probably many others experience at work. In the book a young man named Edmund Dantes is a 2nd mate on a ship and proves himself to be worthy of becoming a captain of a ship at a very young age. As he sees this success in front of him, which also includes wedding his beautiful young fiance, it is stripped from him by scheming so called colleagues and he is imprisoned unjustly. He eventually escapes, acquires vast riches and takes on the moniker of the Count, exacting revenge on those who imprisoned him.Now you're probably thinking "what the hell is Turtle King writing?" Well, much like the character in the book I have been full of energy and skill, promised positions, and had them pulled from in front of me only to see my opportunities go to complete idiots. I have been trapped in my current job for a long 4 years, feeling imprisoned much like the young Edmund Dantes. But much like the character I have finally made my escape and am free from my work prison. I have resigned today to take a better job for more pay, better incentives and better benefits and I feel ALIVE!!But what about the revenge? Unlike the good 'ole Count, I have chosen to take the higher road and not partake in revenge. My revenge is in escaping my goofy company, incompetent boss, and idiotic executives.. There are times that I really think about giving my boss a few verbal shots for all he stress and heartache he has caused me, but then I realize...I'm better than that! Even as he threw a couple verbal jabs at me today I stayed calm, like the Turtle I am, and let them roll off my shell. In my mind I just kept thinking what a sad individual he is. He's old (64), he's fat, he's bald, he's incompetent, and he never was and never will be even half the leader I am. I take his jabs with a smile on my face, wh

    Poorhouse or Prison?
    2008-01-09 13:01:00
January 10 When improvements to the prison food ration were mooted in England in the mid-nineteenth century, there was a “strongly expressed opinion” on the part of some members of the judiciary, that “the increased scale of dietary recommended by the government would operate as a direct premium to crime.” In spite of these fears, the improvements were ratified, and “the most depraved characters in the country” did get better prison food. The justice of this decision was demonstrated in an article in The British Farmer’s Magazine in 1849 that contrasted the fare in the workhouse and in the prisons. At that time the attitude to the poor was based on the principle that most of them were ‘undeserving’ – that is, were idle or indolent, and not truly deserving of charity. The management of them was therefore punitive, and the conditions in the poorhouses (as sanctioned by the Poor Laws) were deliberately kept severe as a disincentive to the lazy individuals disinclined to work, who, it was feared, would flock there in droves. The conditions were so bad that there were many reports of inmates of these ‘houses of industry’ committing crimes so as to be sentenced to gaol for a few days R&R on the better food. It is easy to see the attraction when the two dietaries are compared, as in this article. Today being Thursday, this was the fare in one set of institutions: Workhouse:Breakfast (same every day): 8 oz bread and half pint of broth, gruel, or milk.Dinner: 8 oz. bread and 4 oz. cooked meat.Supper (same every day) 7 oz. bread and an ounce and a half of cheese. Prison:Breakfast: 1 pint of oatmeal gruel and 6 oz. of bread.Dinner: 4 oz. Cooked meat without bone, 1 lb potatoes, and 6 oz of bread.Supper: 1 pint of oatmeal gruel, and 6 oz. of bread. The workhouse diet varied hardly at all from day to day – and the food was very poor quality and often diluted and adulterated. In the prison there was a little more vari

Prison Chocolate Ban No Laugh Riot
    2007-12-24 01:07:15
We were initially delighted when the phrase "Swedish prison" came across the news wires, given the vast storehouse of research material at our disposal— shop keeps who archive a Smithsonian-like collection of similarly themed films, as well as a steady inventory of single cigarettes so we could get a sense of what prison life is all about without all those communal shower come ons. Unfortunately, without a working knowledge of the Nordic language, and the Ikea warehouse not returning our harassing phone calls (not to mention being indisposed to Googling the phrase “Swedish prison” for fear of incurring some librarian's bifocaled stink-eye) we were unable to figure out exactly what kind of penal institution ‘Brinkebergsanstalten’ is, the mouthful of a prison at the center of the following story. So, with no English language reports specifying the gender of those incarcerated, we decided to eschew modern crime statistics and 200 years' worth of temple-probing criminology and assume it’s a massive minimum security facility for women with daily sheer tube top workouts for the prison volleyball team and unscheduled conjugal visitations for inquisitive bloggers. According to reports, Swedish inmates have been banned from putting their kitchen detail/extortion savings (that would otherwise be put toward shanking the least popular guard), toward the purchase of holiday boxed chocolates amid concerns over alcohol content. This measure resulted in the warden-undermining spokesperson for Kraft Foods, the provider of the crowbar motel confectionery to note, “In order to consume the equivalent of one shot of schnapps, you have to eat some 32 pieces of confectionery. Gosh, what effort." No less effort than what cell block 2D's finest distiller of Ziploc hooch has to expend, who could certainly make good use of such a sweetener to take the toxic edge off the soggy bread and rotten fruit whiff of ‘Orange Jack.’ In related news, a California school district su

You’ve heard all the rumors. You’ve seen all the TV movies. You own The Shawshank Redemption and Oz on DVD. You’ve read all the "You Are Going to be Raped in Prison" books. You’re scared shitless. You know that when the gavel falls and they send you up the river, you’ll be a "new fish" dumped into a pool of bloodthirsty piranhas. The first time you walk down the tier to your cell, praying for God to give your trembling knees the energy to keep pushing forward, you’ll hear the hoots and whistles and see the grimy hands reaching out to grab your ass, leering toothless mastodons making kissy-face at you, the nauseatingly horrifying amorous advances of drooling tattooed sociopaths ready to split your rectum open like they’re deboning a chicken. Your anus will pucker in terrified self-defense.Your cellmate will be a seven-foot-tall tobacco farmer/smalltime burglar named "Bubba," a gentle soul except when it comes to matters of the flesh. He will murder your manhood. The things h

Man faces prison for doughnut theft
    2007-10-09 10:07:09
Man faces prison for doughnut theft Mon Oct 8, 6:48 PM ET FARMINGTON, Mo. - It's a hefty price for a pastry: A man accused of stealing a 52-cent doughnut could face time in jail. Authorities said Scott A. Masters, 41, slipped the doughnut into his sweat shirt without paying, then pushed away a clerk who tried to stop him as he fled the store. The push is being treated as minor assault, which transforms a misdemeanor shoplifting charge to a strong-armed robbery with a potential prison term of five to 15 years. Because he has a criminal history, prosecutors say they could seek 30 years."Strong-arm robbery? Over a doughnut? That's impossible," Masters told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch from jail. He admitted that he took the pastry but denied touching the employee. "There's no way I would've pushed a woman over a doughnut."Farmington Police Chief Rick Baker said state law treats the shoplifting and assault as forcibly stealing property. The amount of force and value of the property doesn't matter."It's not the doughnut," Baker said. "It's the assault."Masters said he didn't even get to enjoy his ill-gotten gains: He threw the doughnut away as he fled.Source : news.yahoo.com

    Insanity, Institutions, Prison & Death
    2007-09-19 17:58:00
    20. You have awakened with an overwhelming feeling that you should go back and apologize... but you don't remember where.Yup.This week a friend of mine was sentenced to six years in prison. I've known the guy ten years. He's worked for me on three occasions. He stabbed his partner seven times and slashed her face. She's had to have some fairly serious plastic surgery. Of all my friends and acquaintances, he wouldn't have made the list of Top 100 guys I know who might end up doing time. When he was found by the police and ambulance crew with his own wrists slit, he couldn't remember attacking her. He was drunk. He isn't an alcoholic. There but the grace of god..."A lot of AA is about growing up and being responsible. Drunks tend to be pretty self-centered and tend to run over people to get what they want. In order to get back to a place in their lives where they can be happy, they need to feel good about themselves. Part of the reason behind the eighth and ninth step is to help alcoholics realize they can make up for their past and start doing good again. But the biggest amends a person needs to make is to themselves."- LAA In the UK [blog]Things are ticking along nicely on the work front. My official start date is 1st October, but I've been doing some bits and pieces.I'm looking at office space next week - very exciting! I know where I'd like to be based - I'm not sure the budget will stretch to it. Regardless of where we go, we'll have to have a reception area built, interview rooms built and a million and other things which will all cost and all add-up. I'm pretty stoked for this, though. There is a brand meeting next week - I have to come up with a name for the business. They've asked me if I want my name 'on the door'. I have an aversion to companies in my sector whose names are more like those a of law firm, investment bank or stockbroker. I'll most likely choose something fairly bland and neutral that says what we do - banking/asset management/hedge fund recruitment and RPO/HRO, essentially.Sober. Grateful. Okay eye day.

    PRISON 101 - a special case study
    2007-07-19 01:31:46
As you can see in the pictures below are would-be bandits Anthony Prince, 20, and Luke Carroll, 19. The men, both Australian residents who came to Vail to work during the ski season, pleaded guilty in June to the $130,000 heist, which they pulled off with the aid of unloaded BB guns.See that!? Nice pose or not? They are dubbed the "dumb and dumber" robbers and sentenced to 5 years jail. Before go to jail must know more about prison ok! Please click here for PRISON 101.Now, Let me briefly tell you about the best best prisons in the world.World's most valuable prison - San Quentin State Prison, California. Capacity 3317The land underneath 154yr old san quentin state prison is estimated to be worth $80 to $100 million, instantly making it the most valuable prison in the world. it occupies 275 acres of oceanfront land overlooking the bay, some say the most valuable real estate in the whole country. that got me thinking, what’s the insurance like on these places?World's smallest prison - Sark Prison, Sark, Quernsey. Capacity 2Sark prison is located on the island of sark in guernsey, was built in 1856 and is apparently the smallest in the world. it can house 2 prisoners at a push and is still used for overnight stays - if you continue to play up after that you’ll get shipped off to a proper grown-up jail with corridors and staff.World's most secure prison - Adx supermax, Florence, Colorado. Capacity 550This is the king of all prisons, and I mean the evil king. to be fair, it’s what a prison should be: harsh. even the name means business, supermax prisons being the securest in the world. This ‘high-tech alcatraz’ was opened in 1994 and is home to only the most violent and dangerous criminals in the country. those pesky prisoners have absolutely no contact with each other at any time and spend 22 hours per day in solitary confinement (cell size 7ft x 8ft), leaving plenty of time to consider what to have as their last meal (by the way, mine would be steak, griddl

    Prison destroys communities
    2007-06-27 09:04:52
It’s not hard to figure out why Americans think sending wrong-doers to jail is such a good idea. The massive increase in the prison population from 380,000 in 1975 to 2.2 million today overlaps with an equally stunning decline in crime: during the Nineties, the homicide rate fell by an astonishing 43%. Cause and effect? Unquestionably, even if other factors, such as better policing and simple demographics (the fall in the proportion of the population made up of young men) have also played a part. But that said, the “lock then up” people should also accept that we’ve now reached the point of diminishing returns. Today we’re putting too many people behind bars, people who pose little threat or who just shouldn’t be there. By the late Nineties, 60% of federal inmates were in for drug offences, casualties of the war on drugs. Then there’s the mentally ill, who, by even the most conservative estimate, now account for 16% of prisoners. Just
