| Medical Blogs May Threaten Patient Privacy | | 2008-08-07 22:59:00 | | (HealthDay News) -- Blogs written by medical professionals may pose a threat to patient privacy, because the authors of the blogs may inadvertently reveal patient information, says a U.S. study that's the first to examine the issue. The researchers analyzed the contents of 271 medical blogs and found that 56.8 percent contained enough information to reveal the author's identity.Although obvious violations of patient privacy are rare, supposedly anonymous medical bloggers who provide information about their location, subspecialty or other personal details may reveal their identity to blog readers, noted Dr. Tara Lagu, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Clinical Scholar, and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania. In some cases, patients described in medical blogs may be able to identify themselves, the researchers said. For example, three of the blogs in the study had recognizable photos of patients, including one with an extensive description of the patient and links to photos. The rese... | | By: Integrative Medicine (CAM) Blog | | |

| Reverse Privacy Lock Sets to Child Proof | | 2008-08-06 19:03:45 | | We have child proofed a couple of doors in our house by simply reversing the privacy lock sets. In particular we have used this method on the door leading to our basement stairs and the utility room in the basement. This is a really simple method to child proof doors without having bulky door knob protectors. As you can see in the photo I've taken a simple privacy lock set (like you'd use on a bathroom or bedroom) and reversed it. I've placed the push button lock in the stairwell to the basement. I really have no need to secure the basement side of the door because there are deadbolts lock sets on the basement exterior doors. We just keep one of the safety lock pins sitting on top of the door casing out of the kids reach. The safety pin comes with the door knob sets and it allows you to release the lock. Once the kids are old enough I'll probably reverse the lock set again so that the door secures from the living space side instead of the stairwell. We also used this method to secure the... | | By: Helpful Advice for Home Construction Improvement | | |

In the US, on average 57 per cent of searches are conducted with Google, and up to 95 per cent of Internet users use Google at least sometimes.“Google is massively invading privacy,” the study said with the company knowing more than any other organisation about individuals and companies, but not bound by national data protection laws. The study argues that Google is influencing economies in the way advertisements and documents are ranked. The other form of Google's invasion is the Google Maps. | Privacy Vs Security | | 2007-09-25 08:36:34 | | Over at Donklephant Justin Gardner has had some rather interesting posts regarding privacy abuses under current US Anti-Terrorism laws. I'm practically Libertarian about privacy. Largely I think that stems from growing up in the middle of nowhere with so much privacy that we could have sun bathed naked on the front lawn and nobody would have known coupled with the fact that I'm an only child. I'm just used to more privacy than most Americans. On that note it was largely The Patriot Act and the ease with which it could be abused that started me down the path to become a blogger. Since the Patriot Act it's only gotten worse. Take for example this article from the WaPo:The U.S. government is collecting electronic records on the travel habits of millions of Americans who fly, drive or take cruises abroad, retaining data on the persons with whom they travel or plan to stay, the personal items they carry during their journeys, and even the books that travelers have carried, according to documents obtained by a group of civil liberties advocates and statements by government officials. The personal travel records are meant to be stored for as long as 15 years, as part of the Department of Homeland Security’s effort to assess the security threat posed by all travelers entering the country. Officials say the records, which are analyzed by the department’s Automated Targeting System, help border officials distinguish potential terrorists from innocent people entering the country. But new details about the information being retained suggest that the government is monitoring the personal habits of travelers more closely than it has previously acknowledged. The details were learned when a group of activists requested copies of official records on their own travel. Those records included a description of a book on marijuana that one of them carried and small flashlights bearing the symbol of a marijuana leaf.... The DHS database generally includes "passenger name record" (PNR) information, as well as notes taken during secondary screenings of travelers. PNR data -- often provided to airlines and other companies when reservations are made -- routinely include names, addresses and credit-card information, as well as telephone and e-mail contact details, itineraries, hotel and rental car reservations, and even the type of bed requested in a hotel. The records the Identity Project obtained confirmed that the government is receiving data directly from commercial reservation systems, such as Galileo and Sabre, but also showed that the data, in some cases, are more detailed than the information to which the airlines have access. Now combine that with this short list of abuses of current anti-terrorism law:FBI apologizes to lawyer held in Madrid bombings: LinkHomeland Security saves America by busting a toy store owner for legally selling a Rubik’s Cube knockoff: LinkFBI invokes Patriot Act for Criminal Copyright Infringement: LinkThough warned in 2001 to use this power sparingly, FBI agents issued more than 47,000 National Security Letters in 2005, more than half of which targeted Americans: LinkDrug-tunnel bust aided by controversial provision of USA Patriot Act: LinkFBI Improperly Used Patriot Act to Gain Information on Citizens, Justice Department Says: LinkSearch Records Requests under Patriot Act Ruled Unconstitutional: LinkPolice invoked the Patriot Act when surreptitiously entering and searching a home or office without notifying the owner 108 times during a 22-month period, according to a one-page summary released by the Justice Department: LinkPolice Log Confirms FBI Role In Arrests of anti-War Protesters: LinkPatriot Act smackdown: Librarians 1, FBI 0: LinkFBI Papers Indicate Intelligence Violations: LinkAfter 9/11: The War on Immigrants: LinkPatriot Act report documents civil rights complaints:LinkACLU, Muslims sue FBI over mosque surveillance: LinkPatriot Act used to round up “eco-terrorists.”: LinkNow stop and think of everything you've ever said via phone, IM, and email that you'd prefer to remain just between you and its intended recipient. Because if we don't draw the line soon, given the current march of technological innovation, eventually every argument with a girlfriend, every reaction to news of the death of a loved one, every remembrance of "how good last night was" will be on file somewhere. Now what bureaucrat do you trust with that?

| Facebook: Privacy for Sale | | 2007-07-18 22:40:00 | | Facebook has potential to be the penultimate social networking site on the planet. It could also be the most evil website ever created. At this point in time, the site is hovering somewhere in between, in a virtual purgatory that can only be broken out of by the company’s decision to either give in to greed in the name of progress or choose to remove some of its additions and save its metaphorical soul. What follows is a basic crash course on Facebook, its history, issues and future. In February of 2004 an entrepreneurial young man named Mark Zuckerburg started The Facebook, a website designed to eliminate the need for “facebooks” which used to be a staple for college campuses across the world. Zuckerburg was a student at Harvard University at the time, and with the help of a couple of friends, he managed to enroll over half of Harvard’s students in the site in less than a month. Following the mass enrollment at Harvard, Zuckerburg and friends soon joined forces with Dust... | | By: Motiveless Crime | | |

| Privacy Advocates Attack Google and DoubleClick Merger | | 2007-06-09 00:10:00 | | On June 7th the San Francisco Chronicle published an article about the growing privacy concerns related to the planned Google and DoubleClick merger. According to the article a coalition of privacy groups have requested that federal regulators "prohibit the merged companies from compiling detailed dossiers about users' online behavior."It would be a rare case for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to consider privacy implications when ruling on the merger (since they usually deal with fair trade concerns) but this precedent may be worthwhile due to the considerable personal dossiers expected to be combined by the two companies. How Big is Too Big?One question is ever present in my mind when considering Google's continued acquisitions spree - at what threshold does a company get so big that government involvements (i.e. regulation) is unavoidable? I don't like the idea of any part of the Internet being regulated but if Google keeps this growth up, at some point it will call this unfo... | | By: The SEO Blog | | |

| My Concerns About Journal Privacy | | 2007-04-26 19:42:31 | | The photo in this entry is Radical Simplicity. Photographed and edited by me, Lynda Walldez.I recently learned a few things about the value of keeping what you write in your journal private. I've been keeping my current journal for two months, so far only granting two people permission to read it. Although, a few days ago I found myself in a sensitive position that threatened to take my control of my own privacy. Which has led me to the decision to never let anyone read my private writings again.I previously shared my older journals with other people, those that I trusted and confided in. Although they are no longer in my life, I was glad that they were never too curious of my writings or pressured me to let them read my journals. There was a respect established for my privacy and integrity of writing.I believe that the content I write about in my journal should remain private, simply because I write for my own purposes. There have been some who have not respected my privacy and were... | | By: One Day At a Time | | |
