| Tata cuts Land Rover production | | 2008-08-26 16:08:00 | | Land Rover sales are tanking along with the rest of SUVs sold here in the States and in Europe, but strong sales in China and Russia are keeping Tata's new luxury SUV brand to within 3% of last year's sales volume. Encouraging sales in emerging markets isn't enough, however, for the Indian automaker to keep from cutting production to hedge against a further worsening of market conditions. In an effort to keep production in line with sales, two shifts have been cut from the Solihull Land Rover plant and 300 workers have been moved to the Castle Broomwich Jaguar plant. Tata is also executing production cuts at the Halewood Jaguar factory where the perpetually disappointing X-Type is produced. With Land Rover making up all the profits between Tata's two newly owned British Marquees, the Indian automaker is keeping a keen eye on production to make sure the luxury SUV brand continues to bring in profits. If sales begin to slip further, we'd expect Tata to make more drastic cuts, and quickly. | | By: Car News | | |

| | | Rendered Speculation: Production Chevy Volt | | 2008-08-10 09:17:00 | | The Truth About Cars' contributor Andrei Avavarii is one of those rare individuals with a real knack for using Photoshop. Being a dedicated car guy, Avavarii's photochoppery is often a very good representation of what a real production automobile could look like. Such is the case with his latest piece, which offers an early glimpse into the design of GM's most highly anticipated vehicle before it's finally released to the public sometime in 2010 (hopefully). The most radical design element kept in this speculative-image are the transparent sections built into the upper door skins first seen on the original concept. Lutz says that the production car will be recognizable as a Volt though some concessions will need to be made, so Avavarii has enlarged the greenhouse and streamlined the car a bit for the sake of aerodynamics. Of course, we'll just need to wait till Chevy lays down its cards -- possibly as early as this October in Paris -- before we know how accurate this rendering may be, b | | By: Car News | | |
| | Rendered Speculation II: Production Chevy Volt, closer but no cigar | | 2008-08-10 08:53:00 | | So let's talk renderings of what the production Chevrolet Volt might look like since they seem to be popping up a few places now. We know for a fact that it will look different from the concept that debuted in January 2007 at the Detroit Auto Show. Will it look like the image above or more like the one we showed you earlier today from another site? From what we know it will almost certainly be closer to this red car, although probably not exactly the same. As we learned last fall, the concept was not particularly aerodynamically efficient nor did it meet the requirements necessary to meet pedestrian safety standards. Since low drag is paramount in order to maximize the amount of kinetic energy recaptured during regenerative braking, the nose has to be much more rounded when viewed from above and the windshield needs more rake. The rendering above comes much closer on both counts and is also closer to what was seen on the wind tunnel model earlier this spring.Elements of the teaser imag | | By: Car News | | |

| | BMW’s cutting-edge F1 technology for production models | | 2008-08-06 07:20:00 | | The main prerequisite for BMW's comeback to Formula One in 2000 was to generate synergies between F1 and series development. It was for this reason that development of the Formula One powertrain and electronics was integrated at the Munich plant, with the BMW Research and Innovation Centre (FIZ) playing a pivotal role. The F1 factory was set up less than a kilometre away from the think tank and the two formed a close network. "The FIZ represents the future of BMW," states Mario Theissen. "Here you have the most capable engineers working in state-of-the-art research and development facilities. The FIZ has vast resources at its disposal, from which we benefit directly. Conversely, with its extreme technical challenges and the requisite pace of development, the company's F1 involvement represents a unique testing ground for our technicians."The acquired know-how remains within the company, where it benefits the development of production cars. | | It's not a Sebring. Volga begins production of Siber sedan | | 2008-07-31 11:20:00 | | Featuring a slightly revised front and rear fascia on a previous-generation Chrysler Sebring chassis, GAZ has resuscitated the Volga brand name with the Siber sedan. In the words of Sergey Zanozin, Chairman of the GAZ Group, "The GAZ Group has started to produce a new line of cars under the Volga brand on platforms from the world's leading manufacturers. The new production complex has the flexible capacity needed to bring new models into production at minimal cost and investment in the future." Well, alrighty then. While the old Sebring platform might not exactly set the world on fire, it is definitely a step in the right direction for Russian roads, with a slightly lifted ride height and beefed-up suspension components to handle the stresses of Siberian winters. The Siber uses a either a 2.0-liter Chrysler engine with 141 horsepower or a 2.4-liter churning out 143 hp. Standard features include air conditioning, dual airbags, ABS and traction control. | | GM employees to get sneak peek at production Volt | | 2008-07-31 11:11:00 | | Pending white collar cuts and dismal sales data have resulted in morale problems at General Motors. That's going to put a damper on the Detroit automaker's centennial celebration, so the General plans on showing employees a near-production-ready Chevy Volt to give workers hope. The (hopefully) game-changing extended range electric vehicle will be shown internally around the September 16th centennial, and employees who see the Volt will, of course, have to check their cameras and phones at the door. That doesn't mean the public won't soon get an eyeful of the car, as GM sources report that it'll be shown in production trim at this year's LA or Detroit Auto Show. Don't forget also that it's also been rumored that Volt could show up in Paris in October.GM has 200 engineers and 50 designers working long hours to make the ER-EV happen by its late 2010 production target, and there are another 400 people working on components. It has been over due of 13 years working for this company and they finally they realize my title was old. I worked my butt off for this company by staying late hours, helping other employees doing their duties, upgrade and learning software on my time and so on... It make me wonder, WHY I did get it earlier? Was it because I'm over weight and not attractive enough with a skinny butt. My co-workers are skinny as a rod and they get pretty much anything they want and they are not good at their jobs. Most of the time, I'm helping or doing their job cause they give an accuse that they are busy home with a husband and kids. It's not fair. Our society is just WRONG. It's not fair or right to be treated like this but the world and media made us this way and its just too hard to change it.OK ... sorry I just need to vent out. When Toyota begins producing the next gen Prius, it'll do so with more factory space than ever dedicated to the universal symbol for fuel efficiency, making it possible to produce 480,000 vehicles per year. The Japan-based Tsutsumi factory, which currently builds five different vehicles, will stop making the JDM Wish minivan to allow for more Priuses. Even more Prius capacity will be available beginning in 2010, when the Japanese automaker's new Mississippi plant comes online and begins to produce more of the hybrid. With the meteoric rise in gas prices, the Prius has gone from a yuppie green statement for politicians and suburbanites to a means for the masses to travel around town without breaking the bank. $4 per gallon gas and a continued lack of competition means Toyota could probably double productio | | By: Car News | | |
| | Mercedes cutting production in Alabama | | 2008-07-27 13:28:00 | | As consumer demand for thirsty vehicles continues to wane, Mercedes-Benz is being forced to slow production at the Alabama plant which manufactures their GL- and ML-Class SUVs and the R-Class crossover. Sales of Mercedes domestic trucks fell to 5,090 vehicles in June, representing an 11.9 percent decline from the same period last year. The move marks the first time in more than a decade of U.S. production, that the German automaker has reduced output due to market and economic conditions. The cuts will affect more than 4,000 of the plant's employees, and unfortunately will trickle-down to hurt the countless other companies who provide just-in-time components to support Mercedes production.[Source: Automotive News, subs. req'd] Tag: SUVs, Trucks Pickups, Plants Manufacturing, Mercedes-Benz | | By: Car News | | |
| | | Ford posts $8.7B Q2 loss, will convert three truck factories to car production | | 2008-07-25 09:24:00 | | Ford posted an $8.7 billion loss for the second quarter of 2008 that it claims is due to sagging sales in North America and one time charges associated with plant closings. The Blue Oval's brutal second quarter included revenues that were down $5.6B to $38.6B and losses from continuing operations that totaled $1.4 billion. Virtually all the bad news came from North America, as Europe posted a $582m profit, and South America ended the quarter in the black as well. Ford also wrote down $8B in special charges related to its restructuring. The bigger news came in the form of sweeping changes to Ford's lineup that will begin with switching three truck and SUV plants to car production beginning in December. The Cuautitlan, Mexico; Louisville, KY; and Michigan Truck Plant will all be converted to produce small cars. Cuautitlan will build the Fiesta, and the other two plants will build vehicles based on Ford's next gen C architecture based on the Euro Focus. | | Honda cuts Odyssey and Pilot production; makes room for more Civics | | 2008-07-22 06:10:00 | | Honda has got to be happy that it has a hot selling compact car to take some of the pain out of the slowing minivan and SUV markets. Hurt by the sky-high price of gasoline, both the Odyssey and Pilot, both recently redesigned, are sitting on dealers lots longer than Honda would like. In order to match production with consumer demand, Honda will close its plant in Lincoln, Alabama for two days next month and cut second shift production at the plant every Friday in August through October. Displaced workers can choose to take either unpaid time off or use paid vacation leave. Some of that unused capacity will be taken up by the Ridgeline, which will now be assembled at the Lincoln plant instead of in Ontario where it is currently being built. The Civic, on the other hand, will see its production boosted at the East Liberty, Ohio plant and in Alliston, Ontario, where capacity will be available due to the Ridgeline's departure. | | Aveo production hung up by supplier | | 2008-07-19 08:12:00 | | GM Daewoo has been forced to idle its plant in Bupyeong, South Korea due to strong-arm tactics by tire OEMs Hankook and Kumho. The Bupyeong plant produces the vehicle we know and ummm... tolerate as the Chevrolet Aveo, and possibly (unfortunately) soon as the Pontiac G3. Rather than pony up the 12% price increases that the tire suppliers want, GM wants a preliminary injunction to force them to end the supply cutoff. For their part, Hankook and Kumho cite higher raw materials costs for their increased monetary demands, even after ratcheting up prices by 5.5% in March. The work stoppage isn't expected to be protracted, so before long, we'll see these little carlets rolling off the line again. GM could always call the tiremakers' bluffs and switch suppliers. We're sure Goodyear or Bridgestone would be interested in talking.[Source: The Car Blogger] Tag: Etc., Government Legal, Plants Manufacturing, GM | | By: Car News | | |

| | Prius production heading to Mississippi, Tundra to Texas | | 2008-07-11 21:53:00 | | Toyota's got some changes and rearranges underway with its North American facilities to better serve the demands of the market. The biggest news is that Prius production will be coming Stateside, which will help unkink the supply pipeline, if not also lower costs. A new facility in Blue Springs, Mississippi is being readied for the battery-pack-mobile, though the location was initially meant to turn out Highlanders. With consumer desires shifting with the rise of fuel prices, cranking out more Priuses is a higher priority, and beginning in fall 2009, the Highlander will shuffle off to Princeton, Indiana. With the Highlander elbowing its way into the Princeton plant, the vehicle currently produced there, the Tundra, will see its production move under a single roof in San Antonio, Texas. The big-truck moves are of little consequence when the plants are scheduled to be idled beginning August 8th due to lack of demand. | | Mercedes Halts Production of Petro-powered Cars by 2015 | | 2008-07-09 20:33:00 | | I found an article on EcoGeek.org that talks about how Mercedes Benz plans to remove petro-powered cars from their line up by 2015. According to the source, they plan to focus their research on electric, fuel cells and biofuels. About $4 million dollars have been spent on the project to date, with a plan to spend an additional $1.4 billion by 2014. I don't know about the rest of you but this sounds like a crock to me! Trust me, I am completely for the reduction in the use of fossil fuels, but how could this be? The year 2015 is only 6 1/2 years away - that would be a monumental achievement. Is there a plan to modify gas stations to biofuel hubs within this time frame that I haven't heard of? Why hasn't this announcement been on the front cover of every major newspaper and newscast in the country? A brief visit to the MB website indicates nothing about any of this or their "sustainable mobility" plan as quoted in EcoGeek. I am highly skeptical. Some truths are mentioned however. After the titanic success of The Cold Vein, Vordul began work on a solo album, then suspended that record after signing a deal with Nature Sounds for what would become his first solo LP, 2004’s Revolution of Yung Havoks. While his name was now cemented in the annals of underground rap, Vordul was still struggling against the poverty and deprivation, the despair and hopelessness that hang in every corner of the ghetto. A Harlem resident since birth, he still lives and breathes uptown, the source of both his inspiration and his personal struggles. | | By: MVRemix Urban | | |

| | GM provides sneak peek of production Camaro Convertible | | 2008-06-14 12:23:00 | | Just like it first did with "official" spy shots of the production Camaro coupe, General Motors has released a pair of small shots showing the production Camaro Convertible in its current state of development. We're told on the GM FastLane Blog that the pics are a reward for the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response to the first set of shots of the Camaro Coupe, which apparently meant a lot to the team of engineers testing the vehicle. While not much is revealed on these preproduction models that we didn't already know, the second shot shows the convertible's profile with the soft-top up, and it appears that the strong lines of the coupe have not been sacrificed by the retractable roof. Feel free to peruse both pics in our gallery below while we wait for larger ones to pop up.[Source: GM FastLane Blog] | | By: Car News | | |

If you want your Maserati Quattroporte to have additional storage for your golf bags, skis or shotguns then head on over to Milan. Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera hasn't exactly announced pricing but they claim that if you bring your Quattroporte to Milan, the coachbuilding should not push the bill over a super car price tag. | | Ford begins production of the Flex | | 2008-06-06 17:28:00 | | On one end, General Motors is announcing its intention to wind down SUV and truck production, while at the other, Ford is just gearing up production of a vehicle that's plenty large in its own right. Ford Flexes are now beginning to roll off the line in Oakville, Ontario, and the plant even has plans to bring on new hires in order to meet production demands. Considering the current rise of gas prices, one might think Ford's boxy people carrier will quickly meet its demise. However, despite its full size stature, room for seven humans and a few cold drinks, the Flex doesn't attack your gas budget like Cookie Monster on a binge. Its 3.5L V6 engine gets a respectable 24 mph on the highway, assisted by a high-tech six-speed automatic transmission. Down the road, when the Flex is available with a turbocharged direct injection Ecoboost option, its fuel economy should raise a bit more.[Source: Detroit News] | | By: Car News
| | 2009 Ford Mustang production estimated at just 45,000 units | | 2008-06-06 17:10:00 | | What's this? News about less Mustangs? Mustang guru Brad Barnett has learned that Mustang marketing manager Fritz Wilke estimates only 45,000 Mustangs will be produced for the 2009 model year. We don't know if the 45 is symbolic of the 45th anniversary of Ford's pony car, but it's significantly less than any other year the Mustang has been produced. In fact, it's only about half that of the 79,280 Mustangs produced in 1992, the current lowest tally, and far below the 134,626 'Stangs sold last year. We can see it now... Ford dealers marking up the rare 2009 Mustang. The most likely situation is that dealers will have trouble selling the remaining Mustangs as customers wait for the updated model in 2010, hopefully with a 5.0-liter V8.Thanks for the tip, Brad![Source: TheMustangSource.com] | | By: Car News | | |
| | GM Whittle Big-Car Production, Seeking Small Vehicles | | 2008-06-04 09:48:00 | | WILMINGTON, Del. — General Motors officially blew up its old business model Tuesday, closing four pickup and SUV factories, announcing a new small car that could get 45 miles per gallon and shedding 10,000 jobs in the process. But it remains to be seen whether the world's largest automaker by sales can sell enough cars to make money in a shrinking U.S. market and stay ahead of the bill collectors. The automaker said it would idle pickup and SUV factories in Janesville, Wis.; Oshawa, Ontario; Moraine, Ohio; and Toluca, Mexico, as it tries to deal with a shift to smaller vehicles brought on by $4-per-gallon gasoline.GM said the truck plant cuts, which will reduce production capacity for pickups and large SUVs by about 35 percent, will save $1 billion per year. When combined with earlier measures, they will save by 2011 $15 billion over 2005 costs.GM's moves, which come after a series of restructuring measures since 2005, result from a huge shift in U.S. consumer preferences for small car | | By: Autos Space | | |

| | Ford eyeing Mexico for Fiesta production | | 2008-05-31 16:44:00 | | Ford has been teasing us with a US-bound Fiesta for years, and the Blue Oval has only said that the well-executed B-car would be built in North America. With time to start producing Fiestas running short, Ford appears ready to publicly announce where the vehicle will be built, and it looks like the Fiesta will be made south of the border. The extremely low cost of labor in Mexico makes building inexpensive economy cars there a no-brainer, and Ford's Cuatitlan plant already builds the current Euro Fiesta and a Fiesta-based vehicle for the Mexico/Brazil markets. The Fiesta is scheduled to appear Stateside by 2010, but with the radical shift towards smaller, more efficient vehicles, we wouldn't be surprised if Ford bumped up that timeline.[Source: Detroit News] | | By: Car News | | |
| | Porsche Panamera Production to Commence April 2009 | | 2008-05-29 08:30:00 | | Latest details of the upcoming Porsche Panamera have surfaced courtesy of Dutch Magazine Autotelegraaf which reports we are likely to see the production for the four-door coupe commence in April 2009, just one month after we expect to see the worldwide debut at the Geneva Motor Show.Porsche has confirmed that the Panamera will be built at its Leipzig plant alongside the Cayenne, and word coming from the Germans suggest that maximum production capacity is currently 26,000 units per annum, although this could be limited to 20,000.There have been so many sighting of a number of Porsche Panamera prototypes spotted around Germany usually sporting very little disguising, therefore when we finally see the unveiling we really won't have much to report about. One question that still remains though is what lies beneath the hood. [Source: Autotelegraaf.nl] | | By: Autoshows | | |
| | CAR claims BMW M1 destined for production | | 2008-05-28 12:22:00 | | The July issue of CAR magazine features an exclusive interview with BMW board member Herbert Diess in which the exec reveals that the M1 Hommage concept is destined for production. Diess says, "We have the know-how, we have the right engine, we even have the infrastructure to build such a car," but CAR doesn't divulge too many secrets online (they are, after all, in the business of selling dead trees). The Brit pub gives up a few teasers about the mid-engine supercar, namely that it won't be called the M1, BMW's plan to fit "heron-wing" doors and a powertrain line-up that will include three engine choices. On that last bit, we'd suspect that the twin-turbo'd 3.0-liter engine would be a suitable entry-level mill, followed by the M3's V8 and the M5/M6's V10, with the latter benefiting from a duo of turbochargers. It's all speculation at this point, so we'll have to wait for the July issue to hit UK newsstands tomorrow, with sales in the U.S. beginning later this week.[Source: CAR] | | By: Car News | | |

Now to confirm it could well be a reality, the folks over at Auto Motor und Sport have spotted a very production looking version of the Clubsport Quattro concept.Instantly we see the front fascia of the pictured prototype is far more in line with the styling seen on the Audi production models, sporting some huge vents which suggest an even more powerful engine could well be hiding under the hood beyond the 300hp TFSI that was in the concept. The other notable features are the larger side view mirrors, high rollbars on the back of the seats, the addition of a brake light and the slightly taller windscreen. | | Nein! Porsche denies U.S. production of Cayenne | | 2008-05-15 20:38:00 | | It didn't take long for Porsche to set the record straight about its rumored production plans for the Cayenne in North America. Speaking with Autoweek, Porsche spokesman Albrecht Bamler, refuted a report by Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper that the automaker planned to build Cayenne's at Volkswagen's new factory in the U.S. According to Bamler, there's no need to produce Stuttgart's uber-ute here in the States, since European manufacturers supply parts and Porsche is protected against the weak dollar by currency hedging through 2013. However, Handelsblatt's report said that production of the Cayenne in the U.S. wouldn't begin until after 2015, two years after Porsche's currency hedging expires. Does that mean N.A.-built Cayennes are still a possibility? Bamler says it's too early to speculate on the next Cayenne and Porsche's production plans.[Source: Autoweek] | | By: Car News
