Better Know a Jaguars Draft Prospect: Notre Dame Safety Tom Zbikowski
    2008-04-24 00:19:54
The least you should know about Tom Zbikowski...   Height 5-11 Weight 211 lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.44 20 Yard Dash 2.55 Bench Reps 24 3 Cone 6.78 Compares To: Adrian Wilson - Arizona: " One of the most exciting defensive players in recent Notre Dame defensive history, Zbikowski has proven himself to be a game breaker with 7 career touchdowns (3 punt returns, 2 interception returns, 2 fumble returns). Whether he can return to his dominant form of 2005 where he garnered several all-American honors remains to be seen. If a team can figure out how to best use his unique set of skills, something the coached at Notre Dame seemed to struggle with, he could be an impact player at the next level both on defense and in the return game." There is a considerable lack of consensus about where Zbikowski will fit in the NFL. Some sites put him as a second round prospect and put the emphasis on the team that drafts him to use his unique sk...

Height 6-5 Weight 262 lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.76 20 Yard Dash 2.88 Bench Reps 18 3 Cone 7.75 Compares To: MICHAEL MYERS-Cincinnati: "Like Myers, Jones is a bit of a tweener, as he lacks bulk and ideal lower body strength to play inside and is too inconsistent with his pass rush moves to be an impact edge rusher. He is very good at run containment, but you would think that a player with his incredibly long arms could get more pass break-ups than he has. He lacks pass rush moves, relying more on a clean release from the outside or squeezing through the gaps to impact the pocket. Still, he has been productive vs. the ground game and later in the draft, he is worth a pick to see if he can develop into a starter at end or tackle. At worst, he will provid...

Better Know a Draft Prospect: Defensive End Quentin Groves

Height 6-3 Weight 259 lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.53 20 Yard Dash 2.62 Bench Reps 30 3 Cone 7.31 Compares To: DeMARCUS WARE-Dallas: " Much like the Chargers' Shawne Merriman and Ware, Groves has that explosive quickness and outstanding suddenness to wreak havoc in the backfield. He is a perfect fit for a hybrid outside linebacker/rush end position in a 3-4 defensive scheme and like Merriman and Ware, he could thrive if allowed to play in a stand-up position. He was having a banner senior campaign before dislocating several toes, but with his balance and body control, along with lateral movement, he should have no problems adjusting to playing off the line. With so much emphasis on pressuring the pocket and getting to the quarterback in the NFL, ther...

Better Know a Draft Prospect: Gardner-Webb Defensive End Brian Johnston

Height 6-5 Weight 274 lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.66 20 Yard Dash 2.66 Bench Reps 26 3 Cone 6.96 Compares To: MATT ROTH-Miami: " Johnston is a work in progress, but he brings instant value as an edge rusher. His first lesson is that he cannot overpower NFL offensive tackles on a consistent basis. This might have worked at his level of competition, but not in the NFL, where tackles are much bigger and stronger. Johnston is a good leverage player who can hold his ground on the edge, but because of size issues, he is inconsistent in attempts to split double teams. With his ability to play on his feet and the flexibility he shows coming off the corner, he will get to the quarterback often, if not asked to play every down. " Fun Fact Inte...

Better Know a Jaguars Draft Prospect: Texas A&M Defensive Tackle Red Bryant

Height 6-4 Weight 318 lbs 40 Yard Dash 5.00 20 Yard Dash 2.88 Bench Reps 20 3 Cone 7.75 Compares To: Casey Hampton - Pittsburgh: " Bryant is bigger, faster and stronger than Hampton, but both play with great anticipation and short-area explosion to dominate vs. the run. Bryant is very good at neutralizing double teams and has few peers when it comers to shutting down the inside running game. He is a tireless worker in the trenches who has not been used much as a pass rusher, but with his speed, lateral agility and strength, he could develop nicely there if a patient coaching staff teaches him proper technique. Whether in a 3-4 as a nose guard or in a 4-3 alignment as a defensive tackle, few blockers at the professional level will have success co...

Jacksonville Jaguars Draft Prospect: Defensive End Tommy Blake

Height 6-3 Weight 272lbs 40 Yard Dash 4.78 (TCU Pro Day) 20 Yard Dash 2.72 Bench Reps 23 3 Cone 7.16 Compares To: Dwight Freeney-Indianapolis: Yes, that Dwight Freeney. Both are "smaller" speed ends that some scouts projected as "tweener" or 3-4 outside linebackers. Remember though, the comparisons to Freeney came when Blake's playing weight was closer to 255-260 lbs. At TCU's Pro-Day Blake weighed in at 270, with a goal of losing 12 more pounds over the next four weeks. His TCU Pro-Day performance did impress a few people though: ""He did everything, and he worked hard," Green Bay Packers scout Alonzo Highsmith said. Height 6-4 Weight 276 lbs 40 Time Did Not Run (Hernia) Compares To: JUSTIN TUCK-New York Giants...Both defensive ends will make a nice living coming off the edge. They have impressive size, though Merling is best playing on the move to utilize a sudden initial step to slip past blocks. He is not a good stack-and-control type and must do a better job of protecting himself from low blocks, but he is quick to provide outside run contain and shows a quick swim-and-spin move that generally gets him into the backfield to pressure the pocket. He won't read and react in an instant, but has closing speed to seal the deal, even in long pursuit, once he locates the ball. He has to improve his lower-body strength, but there is enough athletic ability there to get by as his body continues to mature.) Fun Fact Interview ...

NFL Draft Prospect: Miami Defensive End Calais Campbell
    2008-02-26 20:15:06
Calais Campbell eating a sack lunch With the Combine behind us, pretty much, we're going to take a quick look at the players who's name pops up in the rumor mills and the mock drafts.  Depth will fluctuate depending on the information and the timing.  Our first quick look is University of Miami Defensive End Calais Campbell. From SI.com Calais Campbell, Miami: Campbell's struggles continue, as he capped a mediocre junior season with a poor combine. He measured just over 6-7 1/2 and 290 pounds, yet completed a measly 16 reps on the bench -- worst of any defensive linemen who participated. Campbell then ran his 40s near the 5.1 mark and looked winded at the end of the practice session. Now, you won't see me talk too much about "draft stock", but I'm breathing a sigh of relief that Campbell is struggling a bit through the process.   I see far too many draft projections that show him available when the Jaguars pick at 26.  I talked to se...

Spotlight on George Selvie, Future NFL Draft Prospect
    2007-09-13 09:59:37
NFL DraftThe 2007 College Football Season is already two games old and do you know who the current sack master is? It is South Florida's Sophomore Defensive End George Selvie. South Florida is a team on the rise, after beating Auburn in week two they just missed being ranked in the top 25. They received the 26th-highest number of points (220) in this week's Associated Press Poll.George Selvie has been instrumental in the Bulls success, after week two he leads the nation in sacks (5.5) and tackles for loss (9.5). Selvie stands 6' 4" and weighs 255 pounds of solid muscle, he is cat quick, strong and plays with a reckless abandon. Only a sophomore, but due to his breathtaking success last year as a freshman, he is already a team leader. Watch Selvie on the field (#95), he is almost unblock-able.Last year (2006) Selvie put the football world on notice when he had a breakout game against the 7th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers. South Florida pulled off the spectacular upset and Selvie recorded eight tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, forced a fumble and scored a touchdown on a 9-yard fumble recovery. For that performance, Selvie was named National Defensive and the Big East Player of the Week.Selvie was originally signed by South Florida to play center, but his size and quickness quickly facilitated the switch to the defensive side of the ball. I think he has found his niche, after winning the teams' Overachiever Award for outstanding work in the team's strength and conditioning program, Selvie was inserted into the starting lineup at right defensive end. He finished the season with 84 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks. Selvie went on to be named a Football Writers Association of America/Scripps Freshman All-American, the first in the South Florida Bulls history. Selvie will probably be converted to outside linebacker in the NFL, but he is a prospect that is definitely rising up the future draft boards. Yes we will have to wait until the 2009 or the 201...

    2007-09-03 17:22:00
Apartments adjacent to parks in Manhattan, and near Prospect Park and the planned Brooklyn Bridge Park here, are selling at a 25 percent premium, the New York Sun reports. The average sales price for On Prospect Park, a 114-unit, 15-story glass building going up on Grand Army Plaza, is about $1,100 a square foot. And units inside One Brooklyn Bridge Park, the 449-unit conversion of the former Jehovah’s Witnesses Distribution Center, are selling in excess of $1,200 a square foot. “Being across from a park provides not only a nice view, but also far more light and air for the units — in perpetuity — than does a midblock site,” Abby Hamlin, president of Hamlin Ventures, told the Sun. ...

Giants Sign Supplemental Draft Prospect Patrick
    2007-07-18 08:33:15
According to the Star-Ledger, the New York Giants have signed supplemental undrafted offensive lineman Chris Patrick of Nebraska. Big Blue signed Patrick to a two-year contract at league minimum salary. The New York Jets were reportedly interested in Patrick if he went undrafted in the Supplemental Draft with the Pete Kendall issue still up in the air. The Jets were looking to bring him in for a workout in the future, however he had an impressive workout with the Giants today and signed with them. …I would have liked to see what Patrick could have done on the field, especially with a potential hole at left guard with the whole Kendall mess. The Giants have told him he will play on the left side of the offensive line…...

Local Prospect Pitches Well in Debut
    2007-05-04 22:05:15
I got an interesting press release in my email box yesterday. It was from my dad, about my 10-year old brother’s first start as a pitcher in his baseball league. He pitches for the Paradise Ridge Bulls, a team sponsored by my dad’s cattle business. Dain Armbrust started the game at pitcher and fanned the first three batters in the first inning. He then struck out two in the second, gave up a walk that stole second and third and came home on a throwing error to first. In 2 and 1/3 innings, Armbrust struck out 7 batters and gave up one earned run in the third inning. He walked 4 batters. A tremendous performance for the first timer that most certainly will have him “slotted for relief pitching as the season unfolds” according to Coach Bill Armbrust. Dain, who has 3 hits in 6 at bats in 10 innings saw only one at bat in which he ran the count to full with two foul balls and then advanced the runner to third on a hard hit grounder to a deep playing first baseman who out ran...
