Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 7 - Darrent Williams Teen Center Opens
    2008-05-30 08:15:42
Today will mark the final day of the Broncos Quarterback Camp.  There won't be much time off, however, as the team gets right back to work next week.  AS a reminder, here are the important dates remaining for the Broncos this "Re-Loading Season" -- Team camp: June 2-6; June 9-13 (tentative). * Minicamp: July 7-8. * Training camp: Players report July 24. Much of the news yesterday happened off the field as the Darrent Williams Teen Center was officially opened during a ceremony that was attended by Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen, Head Coach Mike Shanahan, Rosalind Williams, Darrent's mother and 30-40 Broncos players. PHOTO COURTESY It was a moving day, complete with 27 Orange and Blue colored balloons being released into the bright-blue Denver sky and speeches from dignitaries and Broncos staff alike. I could grab all the quotes, talk about all that was said, but feel it would do the whole thing a disservice. There are two quotes I feel deserve mention, one from Darrent'

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 6 - News and Notes
    2008-05-29 06:22:00
Some much to say, so little space!  Actually, I have all the space I want, and it's a good thing.  Yesterday seemed to be a busy day for guys getting injured(Dre Bly), guys feeling better(Jay Cutler) and guys that are simply off their rocker(Todd Sauerbrun).  We'll start with the Quarterback. Jay Cutler says he is completely back to normal, or at least what normal is now. The weight is back to normal, the conditioning is back to normal, and cutler is ready to go -- I feel fine, I feel like I did last year at camp. I've gotten everything back, I can definitely feel a difference from March. I've got all of my zip. I can make all the deep throws. It definitely feels good to do that again. Culter's teammates are also glad to see the 'old Jay' back -- Brandon Stokely - It's almost like night and day between right now and the end of last year. Patrick Ramsey - He's not a different person. Jay's Jay, but at the same time, he's easier to be around - and I don't mean that

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 5 - News and Notes
    2008-05-28 06:52:58
I hope you all had a great Holiday weekend.  I know I did and I once again thank those of you that kept the site rolling along.  The Broncos also enjoyed the weekend before getting back to it yesterday.  Let's take a look at was was seen and heard on Day 5. Travis Henry has been officially put on notice. The Broncos reached a tentative agreement with Free Agent RB Michael Pittman, which should become official today after the 32 year-old passes a physical. You can read more about it HERE and HERE. We'll get to Henry in one second. As for Pittman, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus for those keeping score at home, thinks he can get some things done for the Broncos - There's a lot of ways Michael can help the Broncos, he can play fullback, halfback, he can catch the ball out of the backfield, return punts and return kicks. He's a versatile back. Pittman, whose arms dwarf most mens' thighs in terms of pure girth, feels healthy and ready to go -- I know I can play. I've got a

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Week 1 Round Up
    2008-05-23 07:56:59
The first of two weeks in this year's Quarterback Camp are complete and while there isn't much to be learned from a bunch of guys in shorts and a t-shirt it sure was nice to be talking about football again. There is some news to speak of. Tony Scheffler had his foot examined and the news turned out to be better than expected. The soreness in his foot is nothing but that, but the Coach will still tread lightly this early in workouts. We know there's not another break in there. You can see that on the X-rays. But there's something in there that keeps him quite sore, and, hopefully, with a couple weeks in the boot, he'll come back full speed and we don't aggravate the injury. Nate Jackson, Scheffler's back-up, knows all too well how frustrated Scheff is with the chronic pain. "He feels like, 'What am I doing wrong for this to happen?' It's the same time as last year, the same play. But I feel for him. He's a friend of mine, and I don't like to see him dealing with this. He'll be

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 3 - News and Notes
    2008-05-22 07:18:02
3 days are in the books and the Broncos suffered their first significant injury, though it has lingered for a year now.  Let's take a look at what(and who) went down yesterday --   Tony Scheffler will miss the next month of action due to recurring problems with his broken foot. It was during Quarterback Camp in 2007 that Scheffler initially broke the bone in his foot and played through pain all of last season. There is concern that Scheff may have actually re-fractured the foot, though the Broncos are taking a wait-and-see approach. With Scheffler out of the lineup, old friend Nate Jackson will be counted on to take his place. With Daniel Graham proving last season that his strength is blocking, not running routes, the Broncos need a down-field threat from the Tight End position. Jackson signed a 1-year/$605,000 contract in March with a $425,000 signing bonus. I have always felt an injury to one's foot, especially if you are a running back or tight end, can be extreme

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp Day 2 - News and Notes
    2008-05-21 06:40:18
Day 2 of Quarterback Camp didn't have the storylines of Day 1 , but that doesn't mean there's nothing to report.  Let's take a look around to see what was seen and heard -- A big disappointment in 2007 was the defense. Jarvis Moss was disappointed as well. Not being on the field has left the Broncos' First Round pick in 2007 with something to prove -- I feel it, I've got a little chip on my shoulder. Being out, I'm ready to go play football. I'd be ready if it started tomorrow. Of course, there have been alot of additions to the defense, something Moss sees as a benefit - That's what makes the team good, the competition among each other, when training camp hits, competition will definitely pick up. That's exactly what we need, guys fighting for position and getting better every single day. The Head Coach surely sees a difference in Moss -- His conditioning is looking better, for him to come back his second year should be a positive. Usually those linemen learn a lot

Denver Broncos Quarterback Camp - Day 1 News and Notes
    2008-05-20 07:46:09
The Quest has officially begun. The players were on the field, except Travis Henry of course, and the work of turning around two seasons of simply average(16-16) football is at hand. Here's what was seen and heard on Day 1 of Quarterback Camp --   The biggest news of the day had to be the appearance of Brandon Marshall on the practice field. You can read about it HERE and HERE. Everyone seemed happy to see Marshall, a key component to the Broncos' success in 2008 -- Mike Shanahan was a bit surprised - "He's doing everything a receiver would do except catch the ball. It's ahead of what I thought initially, I was told he could not work out until a month before we went to training camp. And we still thought we could get him in shape, ready to go for our first practice. As for when Marshall might be able to catch a ball again, and his availability for Training Camp, Shanny had this to say -- June 22 with will be the first day he'll be able to catch the football, so that wil

Quarterback Camp Marks The Beginning Of "The Quest'
    2008-05-19 11:36:43
Quarterback Camp.  Those words won't spark much of a reaction from mainstream fans, but for us Broncos-Fanatics, any term used to describe on-feild activites is reason to get excited.  For the players, it's time to get down to the business of coming together as a football team.  The Broncos have added 36 new faces to the roster and those guys need to get to know each other a bit.  For the MHR, it means time to get serious about covering the team on a day-to-day basis.  I have officially termed the 2008 season as "The Quest".  It is both direct and to the point, as well as general, enigmatic.  I have purposfully left off what "The Quest" is for.  I leave that to you.  It is far beyond me to tell you what your expectations for 2008 should be.  I have my own, and for me "The Quest" to reach those expectations starts today.  Just like "The Reloading" season before it, 2008 now has a moniker.  Use it with pride! As with any Ques

    What About The Third-String Quarterback?

Taking a look at the current depth chart, the only quarterbacks the Jets have signed right now are Kellen Clemens, Chad Pennington and Brett Ratliff. Do the Jets plan to go into the season with Ratliff as their third-string quarterback? Probably not. He’ll likely be on the practice squad for another season as long as [...]

No Excuses This Year For the Quarterback Position

A successful 2008 season could depend on the play of the team’s quarterback position. (Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens) Both players were given excuses for their horrible play in 2007, due to an inconsistant offensive line. With the additions of Alan Faneca and Damien Woody, that should not be a [...]

NFL QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE FINALLY MOVES TO RETIREMENT
    2008-03-04 14:07:00
After 17 good years of playing on the NFL’s Green Bay Packers, quarterback Brett Favre finally decided to retire from the game. The Packers retired quarterback told ESPN today in quote, “I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired.” The legendary three-time MVP has achieved many goals in his career, including over several league records and, this year, setting the most career touchdown passes in the NFL. Just last season, Favre broke Dan M

Quarterback 2005, McLaren Vale Red Wine
    2008-01-02 18:22:00
Quarterback 2005 McLaren Vale Red Wine Australia Winemaker: Tony De LisioWill drink again.30% Shiraz, 27% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot 22%, Grenache 21%I bought this wine for The Guy for Christmas simply because of it's name. However, it is a McLaren Vale and it is a blend, so I did use a little discretion. This wine was very (subtly) alluring. The Guy and I enjoyed it more the second night – though the first night was good. Big fruit aroma – smells like it will pack a punch. It is a “quiet”, mellow yet full, cherry flavor-packed, woodsy wine up front. The finish is very subtle and just goes away gently. This has got to be my favorite wine quote ever from The Guy: He said "When you put the Quarterback in your mouth, you get a burst of taste." (Oh, I'm thinking Matt Cassel or Tom Brady.) He insists he was talking about the wine, but I still think all these months and years of watching those tight ends run around have certainly had quite the effect on him. The recommendation is to drink over the next 6- 10 years. The Wine Advocate gave it a 90-92 rating. When you're dreaming with a broken heart The waking up is the hardest part . . .. . .When you're dreaming with a broken heart The giving up is the hardest part ---John MayerDreaming With a Broken Heart8.5 out of 10 $22 / 750 ml bottle 15% alc. by vol.http://www.epicureanwines.com/The Guy: Yeah so... like ... um... The loss from words is due to an inherent inability to keep up with the quick wit of the gal. All I know is that I'm not the one fawning over these pics (1, 2, 3, 4) from camp. Odd name for a wine, but heck, if it is half as good as the team I follow, then why the heck not give it a shot?

    Sunday Evening Quarterback: Week 11
    2007-11-11 13:25:00
Lessons1. Illinois is a future Big Ten PowerhouseJust one year ago, Ron Zook had Illinois 2-10 despite two heralded recruitng classes. One year later, the Illini have won eight games, upset number one ranked Ohio State in Columbus, and appear headed to a New Year's bowl berth. If anything was more evident in Saturday's game was the fact that Juice Williams and company are going to be a force to be rekoned with in the Big Ten. As the years progress, Ron Zook's Illininois Fighting Ilini should become an annual Big Ten powerhouse. Why will the Illini become such a dominant foe? Speed! If there is anything the Big Ten lacks more is overall team speed. Against Ohio State's vaulted defense, Juice Williams looked like Dennis Dixon with four passing touchdowns and several key third down scrambles. Teams such as Michigan and Wisconsin have been burned by teams with more teams speed. Historically, the Big Ten has been a power conference with team's punding the ball and passing around twenty

    Sunday Evening Quarterback: Week 10
    2007-11-04 16:23:00
Lessons:1. Karl Dorrell is finished at UCLAOver the past few seasons in Westwood, UCLA fans have been calling for athletic director Dan Guerrero to ax head football coach Karl Dorrell. For all those Dorrell haters, you might finally be getting your wish. Prior to this season expectations for the Bruins were sky high as preseason magazines across the country labeled the Bruins as a legitimate threat to USC's BCS title hopes. Even the Los Angeles Times, predicted that the Bruins would be 11-0 prior to their December 1st meeting with the rival Trojans.Three months later, the Bruins are in danger of missing a bowl game with Oregon, Arizona State, and USC awaiting. UCLA's last three weeks clearly showcase everything that has gone wrong with the Dorrell era, as inconsistency becomes their the mantra. On October 20th, the Bruins play extremely well at home against Cal in a 30-22 upset victory. Then they lost in consecutive weeks to Washington State and Arizona, two of the Pac Ten's worst t

    Quarterback situation is no joke
    2007-09-13 07:11:37
No cheerleader this week, since the Packers haven't had them since the late 1980s. Instead, I torture you with the man who may be your quarterback on Sunday ... Jared Lorenzen. ELI SUCKS!!! Eli is a sissy! He's afraid of the pass rush! Eli will never be any good, he's too quiet and 'ole sourpuss Manning takes lousy pictures, too! The Giants have the wrong Manning! Maybe Archie can still pass the ball straight, because Eli can't! Eli is a bum! And Ernie Accorsi is an idiot! The Giants should have just drafted Ben Roethlisberger! It seems like ever since Eli Manning got to New York it has been fashionable to rip him. Over the years I've done some of that myself. Everybody's got an Eli put-down, or a reason why he will just never measure up to the family name. It seems, in fact, that the only thing more fun than picking on Eli the past couple of seasons has been making fun of his backup, the 285-pound Jared Lorenzen. He's the man o

    Evanston we have a Quarterback
    2007-09-09 17:32:00
Since the graduation of legendary passer Brett Basanez nearly two years ago, the Northwestern Wildcats have been searching for their next great quarterback. Last season, the Andrew Brewer experiment failed as C.J. Bacher became the starter with five games left in the 2006 season. He finished the year as the start but was inconsistent during that time.A year later, Bacher looks to be the man in Evanston and on Saturday he showed why. While his stats weren't off the charts, 20-45, 227 yards, 3 touchdowns, 0 interceptions, his leadership, especially in the final minutes, was priceless.During the second quarter, Tyrell Sutton suffered an ankle injury and only appeared in one play after the injury. Despite losing their star running back, Bacher continued to manage the offense and keep the Cats in the game.It was in the final quarter that Bacher truly made his mark. With the Wildcats down 31-27 and starting at their own twenty yard line with no timeouts left, Bacher worked his magic and lea

Quarterback Conundrum: When to Draft a QB
    2007-07-29 16:23:35
One of the most debated topics in fantasy football circles involves the drafting of quarterbacks. Everyone seems to have a differing opinion on this matter. Most hold fast to their philosophy, standing firm year after year. Others, although a group fewer in number, are more flexible, basing their opinion on that particular season's crop of quarterbacks. They, too, will have a game plan going into the draft and in nearly all cases will see it through to the end. What exactly are the schools of thought that these owners adhere to? Well, there are basically three:Grab a stud QB early, perhaps in rounds 1 or 2, but definitely by round 3. These owners will end up with players like Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, and Marc Bulger. Get some stud RBs and WRs first and then draft a QB in rounds 4, 5 or 6. Donovan McNabb, Matt Hassleback, Vince Young, and Jon Kitna will start for owners that choose this approach.Never draft a QB before round 7. These owners are content to st

    Training Camp Positional Preview: Quarterback
    2007-07-18 07:01:55
It's time to start preparing for training camp. And what better way to do that than by breaking down each position. We'll get this thing started by looking at the most important position in the game: quarterback. Trent Green: 6'3, 217, 14th year His anticipated arrival certainy created quite a buzz amongst Dolphin fans this past offseason. Then, once he was finally acquired on June 6, the buzz grew even more. Some fans loved the move while others hated it. However, the bottom line here is that he was brought in because coach Cam Cameron believes Green can effectively run his offense. That's the bottom line, so deal with it. Green will be the team's starting QB for at least this year. In Green, the Dolphins have an extremely smart and accurate quarterback. In fact, despite 2006 being a down year for Green (thanks in large part to the concussion), he still completed 61% of his passes. And if you look at his previous 5 seasons, Green has completed 63% of his passes a

Breaking Down The Roster -- Part 5 -- Quarterback
    2007-06-21 16:26:21
Cutler Has Everything Needed To SucceedFour breakdowns in the books.  Four positions down, eight to go, and while this is a bit cumbersome I am really enjoying it and actually look forward to completing them just to see what you guys and gals are going to say.  Keep it coming!!! Some might consider today's breakdown as a bit of a break.  If this was last off-season and I was doing a breakdown of the Quarterback position it would have a bit more drama to it.  We'd be talking about Jake Plummer coming off a trip to the AFC Championship Game now battling for his job with a Rookie quarterback the Broncos traded up to get.  Yea, a lot of meat there to be sure.  This year we don't have to "worry" about that and I am definitely relieved.  I have said it before and will say it now, any quarterback controversy, real or perceived, is a negative to a football team.  It may not be as exciting for people who cover the team and want to sell newspapers, but

And the quarterback to build around is ...
    2007-06-12 14:16:09
A couple of weeks ago I asked you to vote on which NFC East quarterback you would be most willing to build a franchise around. Of the 24 votes cast so far, I am mildly surprised that 16 of them (67%) have gone to the Giants Eli Manning. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised. This is, after all, a Giants blog visited mostly by Giants fans (I hope). Talking about Manning always seems to lead to an argument, though. Is he a superstar? A bum? An average quarterback? Overrated? A guy who still has time to get better? Everybody seems to have a different opinion, so I wasn't expecting the show of support for Eli. I'll leave the poll up for a few more days, so feel free to add your vote if you haven't done so already. I'll get to my choice later on, but let's quickly break down the division's four starting quarterbacks. Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles -- Entering his 9th season, McNabb is one of the premier quarterbacks in the league when healthy. His health is a major quest

    Dolphins Get Their Quarterback
    2007-06-06 02:56:02
Reports indicate that Miami has acquired QB Trent Green. After months of speculation, the deal finally went down today; a conditional 5th-round pick in the 2008 draft was the collateral. Miami appears to have finally found their starting quarterback this season; this puts doubt into the future of Daunte Culpepper in a Dolphins uniform. In other news, fans showed up to Dolphin Stadium to react to the deal: Looks like Tiny needs a new jersey In all seriousness, this is probably a good move for the Fish. But to think that Trent Green is suddenly going to turn this team into a contender is, thankfully, ridiculous (although he should be a great tutor for John Beck). What I am excited about is that Green is a bit easier to take down than Culpepper; if you recall, the Bills sacked Daunte seemingly every play in a victory in Miami last year. Thoughts on Miami's newest acquisition?

The Saga of Quarterback Mitch Mustain
    2007-05-23 02:39:52
Quarterback Mitch Mustain, the 2005 Parade magazine prep player of the year, will sit on the sidelines and learn the USC offense this season (2007). The bad news is, in accordance with NCAA rules, after transferring to USC from Arkansas, he is required to sit out a year. The good news is he will still have three years of NCAA College Football eligibility left. If he would have transferred to a non-division I school he could have played immediately.Mustain has been through a lot in his short college football career. He started for Arkansas as a freshman and went undefeated, winning his first 8 games, but was then benched in favor of Casey Dick, even after a November win against South Carolina. Mustain completed 69 of his 132 passes for 894 yards. He also had 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions during his short tenure at Arkansas. The benching probably didn’t sit well with Mitch, and then, on top of that, his former high school coach at Springdale, Arkansas, Gus Malzahn, who was hired by the Razorbacks to run the Razorback offense, really didn’t get an opportunity to install his own offense, so (Malzahn) ran off and took a job coaching at Tulsa.Another factor in Mustain’s departure might have been his embattled coach Houston Nutt, there was evidence that Nutt was having an affair on his wife Diana. Cell phone records surfaced showing Nutt, using a University of Arkansas issued phone, exchanging more than 1,000 text messages with a female television news anchor.Regardless of the reason, Mitch Mustain has been taking a lot of criticism for his transfer, but he might have the last laugh. He won’t have it easy however, not only will he have to sit out a year, but in 2008, he will have to compete with a talented, firmly emplaced quarterback at USC, named Mark Sanchez. But even if he doesn’t beat out Sanchez, by the time he is a senior, he will almost certainly be the starting quarterback at USC. Playing under Coach Pete Caroll bodes well for Mustain's future. But then again, a lot can happen in three years.Mustain definitely has the tools to be a successful college football quarterback with a little patience. The 6’ 3” 205 pound future NFL Prospect was the top rated signal caller coming out of high school where he completed 70 % of his passes as he led his team to an undefeated record and a state championship. It will be interesting to see what happens to Mitch Mustain, but if he can overcome all the adversity, he could emerge as an elite future NFL Draft Prospect, and despite everything else, that’s what really counts.

Quarterback Camp Day 2 -- Rod Smith Speaks
    2007-05-18 17:51:42
Day 2 of QB Camp came and went, and judging by most of the articles written by the MSM it appears Rod Smith was the major story.  It is kind of funny to me, how you can tell who and what reporters are given access to by all the similar articles that are written for the next day.   Here are some links to some of the pieces -- Lee Rasizer of the Rocky Mountain News describes the pain Rod Smith has been dealing with for the past three seasons. Tom Kensler of the Denver Post tells us Rod Smith is preparing to be a major force in 2007, or he'll simply walk away. Andrew Mason also took good notes for his BLOG Photo Courtesy to Andrew Mason's Blog Smith has been a true warrior for the Broncos and one of the great success stories.  If you take a look at his career stats, Rod Smith is damn close to the promised land of Canton, OH -- There is no doubt that Smith is close.  He may have enough already.  My opinion is he needs a little more.  If Smith ca

Quarterback Camp Day 1 - Random Thoughts
    2007-05-17 17:03:43
The first day of Quarterback Camp has come and gone, and while it gives us something to write about on the field there really wasn't all that much that happened... There were some stories to talk about, and here are some of my thoughts about Day 1....  Part of any healing process is getting back on the saddle so to speak.  Anytime you lose someone there is going to come a time when you have to face a situation that brings their memory back to the forefront of your mind.  The Broncos experienced that yesterday, stepping on the field for the first time without Darrent Williams and Damien Nash.  It is another important step in the healing process, not only for the team as a whole, but for each individual Bronco personally.   D.J. Williams is one of those players, and with his increased leadership roll on the defense this season he'll have an important impact on helping the D get over the loss. "Every time we hit the huddle, me and Darrent had a little secre
