| Raiders of the LCTSM - Isn't This Thing Over Yet? | | 2008-07-02 12:16:06 | | Our story so far: Idaho Don, handsome, strong, wealthy, brave, and true, had determined to find the ultimate source of the 123meme.In the company of a great deal of cheap American beer and a shiftless, undependable, and scurrilous lackey named Crazy Wolf a stalwart, fearless, and in no way unequal co-explorer named Lobo, (Ouch! LOBO! Geez! Alright! Next time you sit in the front of the canoe!) he had survived the Science Fiction blogs in the Twilight Zone and gazed at the wonders of the Kingdom of Queens. But the dynamic duo still had far to go. And even the potential danger ahead paled in comparison to the peril of:"Mutiny in the Ranks"Our story continues:" I said, stop calling me Crazy Wolf.""What?!""Stop calling me Crazy Wolf. My name is LOBO.""Lobo??? What kind of name is that for a comic-relief second banana? That's like; The Lone Ranger and Paul, or Batman and Brent, the Boy Accountant! (see here for part 1.)Accompanying him on the trek is his faithful humanoid companion, Crazy Wolf. Master of the low blow; cunning yet surly. Day 1. After carefully selecting the supplies for our mission and loading the boat, we got underway. We started in the familiar waters of The Squib. Evil Genius, and the man ultimately responsible for this blog series, so don't blame me.Amazingly, we quickly left the territorial waters of Grand Humor-Blogwick (Note to self: Must have Mark Rayner's true allegiance checked out)and passed through the extremely literate home of “Enter the Octopus”The day being pleasant, we decided to simply float for a time on the Information Super-River. | | Raiders of the Lost Crusader Temple Skull Meme | | 2008-06-27 23:00:45 | | Today I begin an adventure. An adventure that I will be reporting on all this weekend. A grand, exciting, travelogue of strange and exotic locales populated by arcane and enigmatic peoples from all over the world. But first:Housework.I got another meme. This one is at least incredibly easy. It was given to me by Mark Rayner of the fabulously funny blog:The SqwibTo comply, all I need to do is pick up the nearest book and turn to the 123rd page and provide the fifth sentence here.Of course, nothing is that easy with me. I've got two books close at hand and I can't tell which is closer. So I'll do both, because lets face it, this isn't a lot of work.Book one: The Ford Tractor Model 8N Owners Manual:Page 123, sentence 5: "(1) Use a clean, well-banked forge fire, and heat 1/3 of the share point to a cherry red temperature."There, that was easy. | | | Javon Walker's Absurd Account Proves He Is Perfect For Raiders | | 2008-06-18 12:24:22 | |
Preface -- No one deserves to get beaten and robbed. I firmly believe that. Javon Walker did not deserve what happened and I am glad, as a human being, that Walker, another human being, is OK. What one deserves and is accountable for are two different things, however, and that, along with Javon's ridiculous "account" of what happened, are at the heart of this story.
I have been biding my time, waiting for the right opportunity to discuss the beat down former Bronco/current Raider Javon Walker received in Las Vegas a couple days ago. Walker was left battered, suffering a "moderate" concussion and broken orbital bone, as well as a bit lighter in the wallet($3000) and bling department($100K). He was released a littler earlier today, a sign that his long term prognosis is good. For that, I am thankful for no one deserves to get beaten and left for dead. That said, you'd think Walker would know better!

C'mon everyone! Go vote for Jaxson De Ville to beat those crazy Raiders fans! The voting is getting closer, so don't delay! You don't want to see fans from Oakland to beat our beloved mascot do ya? Practice for the upcoming elections by making your choice for the right candidate. Maybe not for the presidency, but winning the best mascot in the NFL is way too important to pass up. What are you still doing reading this? Go! Now! Enjoy.
Head over now to this spot and Vote now! We have to fill the "dead zone" with fun stuff too, right?

Ryan received 68% of the total vote. Glenn Dorsey was in second place, with 21%. So now the draft looks like this so far: Miami Dolphins - Chris Long, DE, Virginia (49%) St. Louis Rams - Jake Long, OT, Michigan (67%) Atlanta Falcons - Matt Ryan, QB, BC (68%) Up next, with the 4th pick, are the Oakland Raiders. For all of your Raider needs, including news and insight, check out Silver and Black Pride. Below are the Raiders' draft needs, according to NFL Draft Countdown: 1. Defensive Line: Depending on where the choose to play Tommy Kelly, who they grossly overpaid for in free agency, they will either need find a stud pass rusher at defensive end or defensive tackle. 2. The DE was a first round pick off of that stellar 2001 UM team, but never really played up to his potential. Miami was looking to sign him, but supposedly he failed one of their tests during the physical, so no contract was offered. Today, the former Cane signed with the Raiders. First before I get to the grades I want to hand out a "Dumbass Player of the Game Award" to.... None other than... Warren Sapp. I do not know what the hell was going through his mind today, but this was the end all and be all of his career today. Being ejected from any game is BAD, but being EJECTED from a game that means nothing to your team is an outright mind-blower! Three unsportsmanlike Conduct penalties back to back after a single play has got to be an all time meltdown of Nuclear proportions. I can't wait to hear his justifications of his actions...I hope the league fines and suspends him. Any time you have four turnovers like we did then you have another situation where you get a rushing the kicker call, which keeps the drive going, that's 31 points right there out of 34. You give up 31 points with four turnovers and a mistake on special teams, you have a hard time competing in a game. We will keep on working on things that we have done poorly and hopefully we'll get better." On the team's run defense against Oakland -- "It's a combination of things. One person being out of position and one person missing a tackle. That's what run defense is. We'll keep on working on it. Since the bye week, that was not one of our better games." | | Defensive Woes Be-Damned - Warren Traded To Raiders | | 2007-08-20 17:51:21 | | The Denver Broncos on Monday traded defensive tackle Gerard Warren to the Oakland Raiders in exchange for an undisclosed pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. Warren is a seventh-year player who spent the last two seasons with Denver after joining the club in a trade with Cleveland on March 2, 2005. It is the first time the Broncos have completed a trade with Oakland since 1993 when the Raiders acquired RB Gaston Green for a 3rd Round pick. I am all for the theory that the Pre-Season doesn't matter and that the Broncos have been playing a base defense, 7-man front throughout. But to be that confident that the D-Line is going to come together, ESPECIALLY after the loss of Ebenezar Ekuban for the season, seems downright stubborn to me. Warren was a warm body at least and a big one at that. The Broncos painted themselves into a corner with Warren by leaving him at home the past two weeks. | | Raiders Expected to Sign Culpepper | | 2007-08-01 01:47:48 | | A reported newspaper said the Oakland Raiders will sign free agent and former Viking and Dolphin QB Daunte Culpepper to a one-year deal, according to a source known with the situation. This would be a good move for the Raiders because as I stated in Saturday’s July 28 article, “Raiders QB Russell to start Week 1?” this team does not have a “worthy” starting QB to go in there for Russell no matter how long he holds out. Now they do, as they are expected to pick up the former Central Florida QB Culpepper. Culpepper should be the favorite to be under center against Detroit at home for Week 1. Oakland has been pleased with his workouts and so far he is a “go” in terms of his questioned, and often speculated health.
Culpepper has a strong arm and still has some mobility left in him. He is a major upgrade over McCown and Walter. He should be able to keep the seat warm for Russell when he is ready to start.

| | Raiders Waive Safety Jarrod Cooper | | 2007-07-26 16:51:28 | |
Len Pasquarelli of ESPN is reporting that the Oakland Raiders have waived troubled safety Jarrod Cooper, a sixth year safety. Cooper was suspended last week for a violation of the NFL’s steroid policy, which hastened his release from the team. This transaction could quite possibly end the career of Cooper, a special teams ace for the Raiders, but beset by off-the-field problems.
Cooper was suspended for four games and lost six game checks while a Carolina Panther; at that time he was charged with with driving while impaired. He was susequently released by the Panthers after being accused of providing false information to a police pofficer in 2004. Once upon a time, his most recent suspension would have taken from Cooper approximately one-fourth of his season’s pay ($270,588), but he would have been allowed to report to camp, play through the offseason and then sit out the 4 games required.

Cooper will be allowed to play though the preseason and participate in training camp, and his suspension will start on August 31st. The Raiders first four games are vs Detroit, at Denver, vs Cleveland and at Miami. He will be allowed to return after the teams bye week and his first game back will be on October 14th vs the Chargers. Cooper, who is a solid special teams player for Oakland, is the second player on the Raiders to have to sit for violating the teams substance abuse policy. Running back Dominic Rhodes will also be sitting four games as well. In other Raiders news, the team on Friday announced the signing of safety Eric Frampton to a contract. Despite already having two solid safeties, the Oakland Raiders are ready to take a chance on former Jags safety Donovin Darius. The Raiders on Tuesday signed Darius, a big-time hitter in the secondary who has missed parts of the last two years with injuries. He spent the first nine years of his career with the Jags before being cut, by the surprise of many, this past June. “We are extremely excited about adding Donovin to the Raiders,” said Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin. “He will bring us immediate competition in our secondary. Donovin exemplifies hard work and dedication to the game. Working with Donovin at Jacksonville, I was able to see what a phenomenal competitor he is. He will fit great into our team philosophy.”
The signing of Darius adds to a solid defense that was third-ranked overall last season, and the number one pass defense in the league. Darius could challenge current starter Stuart Schweigert at the safety spot. Michael Huff, who was | | By: NFL GridIron Gab
| | Raiders DE McNeal Arrested on Fraud Charges in South Carolina | | 2007-07-06 00:09:38 | | Raiders defensive end Bryant McNeal was arrested on Thursday in South Carolina following a traffic stop for having an outstanding warrant. The 27-year-old’s warrant was for selling a Land Rover to a pawn broker for $15,000 in Florida when he didn’t own it. McNeal was with Tampa Bay back in 2005, and reports say that during that summer he didn’t return to claim the car, and Carbucks Corp. tried to collect the title. The company then found out that McNeal had not paid off a bank loan as well. The arrest was issued in December of 05 for defrauding a pawn broker.
“We take matters of this nature very seriously,” Oakland spokesman Mike Taylor said Thursday. “But until we have all of the facts, it would be inappropriate to comment or otherwise react.” McNeal on top of the first charge also was served a warrant for writing a bad check for $1,500. He was signed to the Raiders practice squad last season. McNeal signed with Tampa Bay in Dece | | By: NFL GridIron Gab
| | No Doubt - Russell Should Start Opener for Raiders | | 2007-06-14 16:50:30 | |
Everyone wants to see the number one pick of the NFL Draft the first time he takes the field. For Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell, that shot in a regular season game could come as early as opening day when the Raiders play host to the Detroit Lions. The San Francisco Chronicle reports on Thursday that Russell appears confident and ready to go if he indeed is going to get the start on opening day.
Russell was asked on a scale of 1 to 10 about where he is if he’s needed to be ready to go as the starter for the opener. He responded with a positive number. “Seven,” Russell told the paper. It’s interesting to see the development of Russell, and how quickly he picks up things in the NFL. The process of Russell picking up the system is going to dictate how quickly the Raiders turn around what was a disaster in 2006.
The first pick told reporters that he spent about nine hours per week on the phone with the Raiders QB coach - John DeFilippo, going over and le | | By: NFL GridIron Gab
| | Raiders Off the List for Keyshawn’s Services | | 2007-05-23 14:38:05 | | Knock one more team off the list of possible spots for Keyshawn Johnson, as reports say that the Oakland Raiders are not going to go after the 35-year-old wide receiver. InsideBayArea.com reports that Johnson, who was let go by the Panthers right after the draft, would be a bad fit for the team. The site explains that once Rich Snead is announced as a member of the Player Personnel Department, he will have his sights in a lot of places, but that going after Johnson is not going to happen.
The team re-signed leading wide out Ronald Curry this past offseason, and Jerry Porter will be featured as the teams flanker when the season opens. The team also has Doug Gabriel, who can play both the split end or the flanker spot. Another thing that may keep Johnson from Oakland is money, as he was recently quoted as saying: “I’m not playing for $750,000, $850,000, $1 million or $2.5 million,” Johnson said. “You can write that down.”

Musings by analysts at big-name broking firms on the potential for takeover bids and private equity raids on BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto have become a handy shorthand explanation for share-price surges in the mega miners. Hot on the heels of Merrill Lynch's think-piece that a private equity buyer for BHP could earn a 30 per cent return over three years, Citi has let fly with | | By: energy BLOG
| | Raiders of the Lost Art | | 2006-08-04 12:02:00 | | Jun's story never saw print... never went to air. Not yet anyway;-)We've all heard about looting in Iraq after the fall of Baghdad, about missing centuries-old museum items, about US soldiers and a Fox News cameraman brought to court for bringing home "souvenirs" from the ravaged country.Jun, a Filipino, was part of the first US Intelligence contingent that arrived in Baghdad to secure Saddam's Palace after the fall. Like some of his fellow servicemen, Jun brought home scores of "souvenirs" from Iraq, among them a huge painting of a lady that was often seen as backdrop to Saddam's on-cam appearances. He took the paintings out of their frames, rolled them so thin they passed through airport customs unnoticed. He knew they would fetch a hefty price, and obviously knew the risk of coming out in the open about his loot. Two weeks ago, a common friend told me that Jun was seeking "contacts" for the sale of the paintings. I said I wanted to do a story on Jun's feats of daring-do... how he outsmarted customs, etc. The next day, I got a call that the coverage was a go.What followed was a frantic weekend. I'd get calls in the middle of the night from Jun's friends. They said he was selling the loot to an Iranian trader in 2 days. They asked if I could produce a million, or else find an instant buyer so we can get the story before the loot changed hands. The hard part wasn't finding a rich crook who would take the paintings for that sum; I had "encountered" those types of contact in my line of work. I was experiencing an internal conflict of the worst kind! Yes, I wanted the story badly! Would I want to be party to a crime? FOX would have bought that package from us. Would I condone another Filipino smart aleck by strutting his stuff and gloat about having gotten an exclusive?!Early Monday morning I called Jun's emissary to say I was no longer pursuing the story UNLESS it was about the turn-over of the paintings to the Iraqi government; that the Iraqi people had suffer | | By: Newsgirl: Off-Cam | | |
