Starting to Buy JNJ and PG, Random Thoughts on PM, DD, RJA
    2008-07-23 10:56:00
Starting tomorrow I'll be buying shares of Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and Procter & Gamble (PG). It'll be a slow process. I have over 100 free trades at Sogotrade (review coming soon), so I'll be buying a few shares at a time. I plan to keep them forever (but sometimes I can't help myself and sell early when a position rises quickly in price).Philip Morris International (PM), which I own, reported solid earnings today and raised its forecast for the year. If the stock continues lower, I'll buy more. I think it's one of those rare, great stocks with massive future earnings and dividend growth potential. The falling dollar will help too. There are risks, sure, but I think it's worth it.I'm trying to focus more on domestic dividend paying stocks with a large portion of sales coming from overseas, as well as international stocks. Most of the world's future growth will happen outside the US. Since US consumers buy a lot of the world's junk, their plight will slow growth internationally

    • Do they have American BBQ restaurants in Japan like we have Japanese Steakhouses in America? I am imagining a restaurant filled with giant BBQ pits, surrounded by tables that enable eight people to sit in a semi-circle and watch an American in cliché BBQ apparel cooking hot dogs and hamburgers. Of course there would have to be a show aspect to the place as the BBQ Kings twirled their spatulas, juggled their salt and pepper shakers, and did funky tricks with their wieners. I can foresee a franchise starting just as soon as I move to Japan.• Every year stoners celebrate April 20th as the national pot smoking holiday. The reasons behind why 420 and not say 515 are varied, but it is universally agreed that 4:20 is the time to smoke pot and April 20th, being the twentieth day of the fourth month, is 420 all day long. Many a stoner throws a massive party on this day in celebration. The interesting part of this is that April 20th is also Adolf Hitler’s birthday. I have to wonder if a

    Just some Random Thoughts
    2008-03-04 19:24:00
After putting the kid to bed, I'm sitting here thinking about my latest project (my website). I have American Idol on TV in the background, but I'm really not paying attention to it. I have my favorites, and they have already performed. Anthony is gone to a Fire Department meeting.I had a call yesturday from another Fireman's wife, asking if I wanted to join a lady's auxilary. I'm thinking its a good idea to support our men, who have an incredible job to do. So the first meeting is tomorrow night, and I will see what its all about.I think the goal for the ladies, is to raise enough money to pay for the firemans appreciation dinner that happens every year. Each year, we have a dinner party for the men, but the department usually pays the bill. Us ladies want to be able to plan the party for next year, and pay for it ourselves. I'm interested in finding out what kind of ideas we can come up with to accomplish this. Stay tuned.......

    Random Thoughts Series 1/2008
    2008-01-06 22:27:00
Random Thoughts Series 1/2008 On Immigration On the debate "Should We Welcome Undocumented Immigrants," Heather McDonald states: "A significant portion of the children of illegal Mexicans and Central Americans are adopting an underclass culture, as anyone can verify for himself by looking at social statistics or spending time in heavily Hispanic schools. Until we figure out how to prevent this from happening, our unrestricted immigration flows guarantee social problems for years into the future." The assertion McDonald made rings through like a liberty bell. On the debate, the other side which is against the motion would seem to appeal to emotions. For instance, Enrique Morones discuss the treacherous trek of illegal immigrants across the border. He even gave a scenario when one of the illegal crossers died of possible starvation or from the heat. The bottom line, the side against the motion seems to appeal to emotion and seem to bring up the archaic treaty: Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Since the other side seem to appeal emotionally, it is reasonable to say that people should not welcome undocumented immigrants. Proponents to welcome undocumented immigrants would seem to miss the point. The U.S. has it laws. Welcoming undocumented immigrants is blatantly disregarding the law, which define every person who steps on US soil on legal channels. Aside from bringing an underclass culture, it is an insult to those who complied with rules and regulations. On friendship There are many ways for a friendship to fall apart. Perhaps it is the distance; perhaps it is the complacency to communicate in both sides. Should friendship fall apart, one should let it take its corresponding course. Let destiny disavow, repudiate, and disclaim what once has been a fusion of two connected souls. On ER The Emergency Room appears to be one of the busiest places, especially when one is a Registered Nurse. Hollywood and Television seem to m

The 11 worst films on the IMDb Top 250 (and other random thoughts)
    2007-11-27 11:10:00
As far as the internets go, the Internet Movie Database is one of the most credible non-news sites (not that those sites are credible - heyo!). However, aside from housing a mini-encyclopedia of every film you never wanted to know that much about, it's also home to probably the most comprehensive ranking system for films.I like their Top 250 (and it's sub-lists) for a number of reasons, chief of which is probably related to my age (31) and the average age of internet denizens (and therefore voters on IMDb). I'm not sure what that average age is, but I'm fairly certain it's significantly less than the average age of an American Film Institute member. The IMDb list, taken as a whole, is both critically and commercially minded, with all of the standards that you might expect to see on a typical critics' Top 10 Best Ever list, but it also includes films that go beyond mere critical success, ones that have had a cultural impact - in short, ones that are loved. Here's their Top 10:1. Some random thoughts about Junior
    2007-11-21 00:01:10
Well it has been several days since I last posted. I had to give myself some time to calm down, think and try to make some sort of sense of Junior's 2007 season. How did I do? Not good. However, I'm going to list my thoughts and some of them may be way out in left field, but I'm sure you are all used to that by now.1. Teresa Earnhardt was a absentee owner in numerous ways. She was never at the tracks unless there was something major going on that required her presence. I feel that and probably the lack of moral and emotional support for Junior caused a lot of friction and animosity between Teresa and Dale Jr.2. Did Junior and Kelley ask too much of Teresa? That I don't know and I don't believe the media or the fans will never know the entire story. For instance, the 51% that Junior was asking for, was that for only him or was he going to distribute it between Kelley, Kerry and himself? All I know is that if it weren't for Kelley, I believe Junior would have been stuck in a rut with

How about a Long Island Association of Special Districts similar to this, this, this, and this among others?Clearly many folks across the nation like the smaller structure of local government, not just those of us on Long Island. Giving a "super structure" to the many various districts that allows them to remain autonomous but act collaboratively and more effectively may be what becomes the most efficient way of handling the current situation.I was watching a local talk show this past Saturday when someone mentioned the Tom Friedman book, The World is Flat (which I read over this past summer). The host was talking about the value of being a "generalist" and how a traditional liberal arts education may now be in demand once again.I agree up to a point. Yes it is good to be well rounded and well read. Yes we need folks who understand how to "synthesize" diverse elements and bring them together for a common purpose. But we need more.We need people trained to think broadly with more th

    Friday random thoughts ...
    2007-10-19 10:22:00
Another way to look at the "One Long Island" project is as a creative enterprise or "ensemble."Much as a great jazz orchestra or combo creates "individual freedom of expression" within a flexible "structure" of some type, we may look at our project in the same way.We spoke in previous posts about how creating a dynamic Long Island also creates an "inter-organizational/individual rhythm" that helps to prevent "stagnation" of thought and action on Long Island. We may have multiple organizations and individuals from different disciplines "playing in the same orchestra" at the same time or in sections or varied subgroups and at times soloing while the group supports their effort. The point is that organizations and individuals must sometimes sublimate their own desires for the success of the "composition."One Long Island will have many composers and many opportunities for individual creativity in what can become the "Grand Long Island Composition."This weekend listen to some Charles Mingus,

(Overcome All Difficulties)Long Island 3.0 is a methodology that allows all Long Islanders to collaborate in a dynamic manner, presuming they wish to do so. How do we maintain a collective focus with Long Island 3.0 so as to deflect the actions of those who wish to have little or no change? Can we encourage our great Long Island colleges and universities to expand the concept of "Long Island Studies" to incorporate some or all of the Long Island 3.0 concepts and create a whole army of professional Long Island "synthesizers," folks who see the big picture and know how to bring disparate elements together for a common purpose? How can we show that by cooperating, we enlarge the opportunities for those already established? To enact change those in power, who obviously believe they have the most to lose (maybe they're correct, depending on the circumstances) must cooperate. Leadership, on some level, is the absence of fear. Established organizations must show that they are willing to "sacri

How about a "Long Island Housing Corporation" (to promote need appropriate housing) as an outgrowth of the Virtual Long Island Constitution and the cooperation between all political subdivisions (and others). Similar to the "Long Island Municipal Investment Group (maybe even a subdivision thereof?)" we wrote about earlier, a continuation of the overarching theory that the more ties we have to one another the more likely it is we will cooperate. How about all the Long Island software developed or utilized for the inter-connectivity of Long Island is done as "open source" and subject to an Long Island Open Source Licensing Agreement? Again this will help us all work from the same playbook and foster cooperation, local innovation and business development. Even software that is proprietary should be required to utilize some "open architecture" so that we can create all the bridges we need to foster the idea of "one Long Island."How do we utilize both "right brain" Long Island talent and "le

Random Thoughts From Jay Abraham China Event
    2007-09-04 17:28:28
Just today, I arrived back in Singapore from China. It had been a tired but fulfilling trip for me. The 3-day event was extremely memorable, for both good and bad reasons. Being bilingual certainly helps, and there were a few occasions where I had to act as a translator (abeit a lousy one) for Jay Abraham. The [...]

    Random Thoughts on Foreign Policy
    2007-07-25 06:37:23
Ron Paul recently appeared on the Mike Gallagher radio show, during which Mr. Gallagher asked him whether he thought most of his support was coming from those who believe the assertion that 9/11 was a government conspiracy. It's an absurd claim that Paul has never come close to making, so the latent insinuation embedded in the question is very strange. Paul isn't accusing anyone of wanting attacks to happen or of actually "staging" them. What he has said in essence is that there is a propensity for politicians and military leaders to see what they want to see and to capitalize on incidents—real or perceived—after the fact to ratchet up to larger goals. Giuliani didn't stage 9/11 but "America's Mayor" has certainly taken advantage of it to the fullest extent.I was among those who, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, found some currency in the idea that we should go into Iraq if they had a bomb and could be dealing with al-Qaeda. Neither turned out to be true, and senior official

    Random Thoughts
    2007-06-27 17:25:48
I'm a bit late making an entry this week due to personal circumstances. My father has somehow managed to hang on a bit longer under hospice care. I'm able to see this as a bonus since it wasn't expected and I suspect it has been the prayers of others responsible. Work seems to have brought an increase in cases of troubled teens and cases influenced by childhood sexual abuse, neglect, or abandonment. How any man could yield to such behavior is a mystery to me. Nothing troubles me more than seeing a child in distress because of the behavior of an irresponsible adult. At the top of my despicable list will always be repeated sexual offenders, deadbeat dads (or moms), and sociopathic crack users. Such behaviors are inexcusable and unacceptable, and in my opinion not part of what is considered mental illness because of such a strong voluntary component to the behavior. My age has started to show relative to the evolution of thought content and closer consideration of certain view

Quarterback Camp Day 1 - Random Thoughts
    2007-05-17 17:03:43
The first day of Quarterback Camp has come and gone, and while it gives us something to write about on the field there really wasn't all that much that happened... There were some stories to talk about, and here are some of my thoughts about Day 1....  Part of any healing process is getting back on the saddle so to speak.  Anytime you lose someone there is going to come a time when you have to face a situation that brings their memory back to the forefront of your mind.  The Broncos experienced that yesterday, stepping on the field for the first time without Darrent Williams and Damien Nash.  It is another important step in the healing process, not only for the team as a whole, but for each individual Bronco personally.   D.J. Williams is one of those players, and with his increased leadership roll on the defense this season he'll have an important impact on helping the D get over the loss. "Every time we hit the huddle, me and Darrent had a little secre

    Random Thoughts On Religion
    2006-09-26 01:27:04
It seems a lot of people think that when it comes to Christianity, open hearts and open minds are only supposed to go one way. While I’m supposed to keep an open mind about their religion, they have no duty to return the favor, let alone even consider that Jesus might possibly be only [...]
