| Matt Harrison Dazzles As Rangers Shut Out Rays, 3-0 | | 2008-08-17 05:04:10 | | That was, without a doubt, one of the most spectacular displays of outright dominance we’ve seen from the Texas Rangers starting rotation in a long time.
And I do mean a really, really long time.
How long, you ask? Try three years long, according to one popular Bill James-devised metric.

| | External electronic medical devices may malfunction during x-rays. | | 2008-07-18 02:02:30 | | FDA informed healthcare professionals of the possibility that x-rays used during CT examinations may cause some implanted and external electronic medical devices to malfunction. Most patients with electronic medical devices undergo CT scans without any adverse consequences. However, the Agency has received a small number of reports of adverse events in which CT scans may have interfered with electronic medical devices, including pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators, and implanted or externally worn drug infusion pumps. FDA is continuing to investigate the issue and is working with the manufacturer to raise awareness in the healthcare community. | | Some Rays of Hope in Recent Operations | | 2008-07-09 10:03:52 | | I have been rightly described as extremely pessimistic about the way our intelligence and law enforcement communities-with the exception of isolated pockets-are facing (or not) the challenges I see as most pressing for the 21st century. These include the growing and spreading threat of non-state armed actors, the criminal-terrorist nexus, the spreading narco mini-states across Central and northern South America, and the world of shadow facilitators that tie disparate networks together. | | Pettitte dominates in 5-0 opener v.s Rays | | 2008-07-08 21:45:00 | | It was a battle of lefties in the Bronx last night with Andy Pettitte facing off against Rays' ace Scott Kazmir. Kazmir pitched a good game, but Pettitte was even better as he led the Yankees to a 5-0 win over the first place Rays.ON THE MOUND:Andy Pettitte pitching 8 innings of solid baseball, while striking out 5 and walking none to pick up his 10th win of the season. | | SWEPT AWAY, FAR FAR AWAY...Tampa Bay Rays 7 Boston Red Sox 6 | | 2008-07-03 04:09:00 | | The Boston Red Sox seemed to be in good shape after six innings Wednesday night in Tampa Bay. They were ahead by a score of 4-1 and needed just five or six outs to get to "Papelbon time." But two things, two people, actually, stood between them and a salvaging victory. They were Manny Delcarmen and Craig Hansen. They imploded completely, with neither recording a single out. Six runs later, the score was 7-4 and the game was out of reach. Boston added single runs in the eighth and ninth, but it was too little, too late. What had seemed to be a certain victory ended up to be a series sweep win for the first place Rays.Daisuke Matsuzaka started for the Sox and had immense trouble finding the strike zone in the first two innings. He clearly has to do something about that horrid control. He has great stuff on all his pitches but that means nothing when you walk five opposing hitters. He threw 101 pitches in that short span and handed the ball over to Hideki Okajima for the sixth. Okie was d | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |
| | Punchless Red Sox Beaten Again...Tampa Bay Rays 3 Boston Red Sox 1 | | 2008-07-02 04:38:00 | | For the seventh straight start, Timmy Wakefield pitched at least seven innings and allowed fewer than three earned runs. Yet the Boston Red Sox were again without the timely hits and lost to the first place Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 3-1. His ERA over that span is a nifty 1.98, but because of a lack of run support, his record is 2-3. Unfathomable. Two wild pitches were a part of his undoing, as well as a walk and an Alex Cora error. But when a team scores only one run on six hits, which was the same number of hits the Rays banged out, there is NO room for error. Here's what Tim had to say after absorbing his sixth loss...“I’m just in a really bad spot, I guess,” Wakefield said. “My job is to go out there and give us quality starts and innings and keep us in the game as long as possible, and I’ve been fortunate enough to do that. . . . We put runs on the board in Houston. It’s just a matter of firing on all cylinders right now. These guys (the Rays) aren’t like they used | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |
| | The Latest Round Goes To The Rays...Tampa Bay 5 Boston 4 | | 2008-07-01 04:34:00 | | Justin Masterson's first pitch of the game was slammed over the fence by B.J. Upton, and that set the tone of the Tampa Bay Rays' Monday night victory over the visiting Boston Red Sox. Their lead in the division bulged to 1 1/2 games, with two more tilts coming up in this series. Masterson had trouble finding the strike zone, BIG TROUBLE. 57 of his 105 pitches (in only six innings) were strikes, and he threw only 13 out of 28 first pitch strikes. It was not the kind of outing the Sox, losers of three straight, wanted to see. Chris Smith took over in the seventh and also could not throw strikes. He recorded an out while walking the bases full, which led to the decisive run scoring in that inning. Is Tampa Bay for real? Last night they became the fastest team to record 50 wins of all those who finished the season before with the worst record. Mike Lowell expounds on their chances..."They're not doing this with smoke and mirrors," said Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell, who went 3-for-4. | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

Suffice it to say: Jimmy Barthmaier did not have the best of major league debuts. He ALMOST had a nice first inning, until he walked Hinske and gave up a homer to Evan Longoria (who can HIT: 4-5, HR, 2B, 2 singles, 3RBI). Jimbo would surrender another 3-run bomb (Hinske) later in the game. He only lasted 2.1 and gave up 7 runs, all earned. His ERA? 27.00.

Sean Gallagher (3-3, 4.54/1.37) vs. James Shields (4-5, 3.91/1.18)
The Cubs will try to salvage the final game of the series tonight and avoid their third 2-4 road trip of the season. Sean Gallagher has yet to post a win on the road at the big league level but he has shown steady improvement for the most part this season....and there is no time like the present. The Cubs offense will have the tough task of beating James Shields and with the day game on Friday, Lou Piniella will likely sit Geovany Soto in favor of Henry Blanco.
The Cubs need the win to avoid their first 3-game losing streak of the season....

Kind of looks like Zambrano, right?
While all of us wait for MRI results on the Cubs' ace pitcher, the team will try to avoid the broom against Tampa Bay. I got to watch the game last night, and I am very glad I'm not a Rays fan. I couldn't look at that field (even in HD) for 81 games. And I'm still not convinced the Rays can keep up their good play over the course of the season (that lineup doesn't impress me much, and their pitching is young, can it hold up?), I'll give credit where credit's due, though-for now. Tampa Bay is no longer the butt of the A.L. East, or even the A.L. for that matter. Trying to salvage a game tonight is Sean Gallagher, or, as Julie calls him, "Superfudge." He hasn't been bad as a No. 5 guy, but you pretty much know what you're going to get with Gallagher right now, 5-6 innings, 6-7 hits and probably 3 runs allowed. Like I said, not bad for back of the rotation.

Carlos Zambrano (8-2, 2.98/1.30) vs. Andy Sonnanstine (7-3, 4.89/1.39)
A win tonight would guarantee the Cubs at least a .500 record at the end of the very difficult road trip on Thursday. Carlos Zambrano will have the task of trying to shutdown the Rays tonight and give his offense a chance to hand him his first victory since June 2nd. The Cubs found out how tough it is to play at the Trop on Tuesday and hopefully they will have the same results for the next two games as they did in Toronto after dropping the first game.
Look for Lou Piniella to use a balanced lineup tonight against Andy Sonnanstine as righties hit (.315) just as good as lefties (.289) off the young right hander.

Get us back on track, Big Z
So, everyone will have to forgive me these next two days because I'm still a little scatterbrained from vacation. I really still don't know what's going on with the team besides Soriano's broken hand (dammit) and the fact that the Cubs still rule MLB. It's also very hard to wrap my head around the fact Jim Edmonds hit a game-tying HR in the 9th last week, but I saw video, so it must be true.
Anyway, the Cubs look to even up against the Rays tonight after kind of a weird game last night that ended with a Reed Johnson bunt. If nothing else, it gave the Cubs blogosphere something to talk about until tonight's game. And Johnson's interesting choice of at-bat also helped out the crappy return of The WAGGLE, who decided to try something new by striking out twice.

How can anyone not like the Cubs?
Tonight the Cubs pack up their vericose veins and white shoes and head to Del Boca Vista to take on the perennial laughing stock Devil Rays.
Only this year they aren't so funny. In fact, they're pretty damn good. The Cubs have the best record in baseball. Tampa has the SECOND best record in baseball. To combat this threat to our supremacy in the baseball universe, the Cubs have called up Matt Murton.
Heh. Suck on that, Tampa. Tonight Ryan Dempster takes the mound against Scott Kazmir. I don't know about you guys, but anyone who spells the last name "Cashmere" as "Kazmir" looks like a commie pinko to me. My point is that if the Cubs win, America wins.
Tonight's game is on Comcast (again).
Lineups to come.

The bad blood between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Boston Red Sox spilled over into a violent confrontation between the two rivals near the beginning of what would be a Red Sox victory and sweep. Coco Crisp was hit by Rays pitcher James Shields, who is a complete a**hole, and he promptly charged the mound, setting off an ugly brawl in which somebody could have gotten really hurt. Shields said he was just protecting his team by hitting Coco in the leg, an obvious retaliation from the night before. Crisp had this to say..."People were scratching like we're little girls, trying to scratch out my eyes," said Crisp, sporting several scratches around his eyes. "People were trying to pull my hair like little girls instead of punches. The fight is pretty much over, baseballwise. You want to come in late and get your little blows in, that's cool. After Tuesday night's 7-4 triumph over the first place Tampa Bay Rays, their home record is an AMAZING 22-5. Not bad, not bad at all. It was Justin Masterson who took Matsuzaka's turn in the rotation, and he was good, not as good as his two previous starts but good enough to earn his second victory. He went six innings, giving up four runs on six hits while walking only two. Skipper Terry Francona had this to say about his young star hurler...“I think he enjoys pitching, I don’t think this atmosphere has gotten out ahead of him or anything. He just likes to pitch. I said before the game Masterson’s pitching and we really didn’t give it a second thought, and I meant that as a compliment. He goes up and we expect him to give us a good ballgame, and he did that.” After Justin's 91 pitches took him through that first six, it was the bullpen's turn to shine. | | | Red Sox Sweep Rays Right Out Of Boston, DESPITE Manny Delcarmen | | 2008-05-05 04:44:00 | | Good morning on this cold Monday. More about Manny Delcarmen in a bit. The Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 7-3, sweeping them right out of the city of Boston in fine fashion, just the way we like it. Jon Lester started and Jon Lester was shaky, throwing way too many pitches in the first two innings before finding his timing and settling down. He was able to give his club six innings, giving up only one run on four hits. He walked three and went to too many high counts early in the game. It was if he'd forgotten that in his past start he had worked faster, with less figiting and hemming and hawing between each delivery. It worked then and it will work in the future. He had this to say after the game..."I've been figuring some things out this year," Lester said. "Figuring out how to set guys up more. How to go to pitches other than what I think are my strengths and get guys out. So I think it's more just a confidence thing than anything."Peter here, and Jon, keep mixing | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |

| | Urban Landcape - Sunset, Sun-rays, and Clouds | | 2007-11-16 20:23:00 | | Sunset over Urban RooftopsLast night I was outside during twilight, and noticed this amazing sunset. The Sun has already disappeared behind the clouds, but rays of light are still shining out and covering the sky. Although the photo above might look touched-up, I have not digitally manipulated this picture. The duotone effect (where the sun and it's rays are black-and-white while the sky near the top of the picture is blue) simply occurred naturally. This is a capture which is not likely to be seen again soon, I was lucky to be out at the right time to see it.The photo below is of the same scene taken a few minutes later - you can see the huge difference between the pictures. In the photo below, the sun has set and the rays of light from the first picture are entirely gone, replaced instead by a reddish glow near the horizon.Sunsets are always very beautiful to watch, and each one is different. As you can see from these photos, the scene changes even from minute to minute, giving you a very entertaining show. So why not step outside tonight, and have a look at this wonderful "theatre" of creation, free for all to see? These photos taken with the Fujifilm S9600 digital camera.#1: (Sun with Rays Shining) Shutter speed: 1/5999, F8.0, ISO 80#2 (Sunset over rooftops) Shutter speed: 1/399, F5.7, ISO 100Submit Photos to Shutterstock and make $$$!

| | | Wakefield's Knuckies Sting Rays | | 2007-08-14 12:11:00 | | Six no-hit innings, eight shutout innings....quite a job by Tim Wakefield as he led his Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 whitewashing of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. From the time he started his warmups, something special was in the air, as the ball was moving and dancing. Said his manager Terry Francona........."[Wakefield] has been a blessing," Francona said. "I think it goes under the radar sometimes, because of the way he pitches. I hope it doesn't. He's been phenomenal ... and he's not done."Peter here, and he wasn't under the radar last night, that's for sure! His line reads like this-eight innings pitched, no runs, two (!!) hits and 6 strikeouts. Carl Crawford's ground ball single starting off the 7th inning was the first hit that Wakes gave up, and the crowd rose and showed him their appreciation. Paps came on to record his 28th save with a 20 pitch ninth. And with Kazmir going against Lester today, it was a must win. But right now they ALL seem like must wins, what with the Yankees | | By: Peter's Red Sox Forever | | |
| | So How Many Titles Have The Devil Rays Won? | | 2007-07-29 19:10:00 | | I was watching last night's Red Sox-Devil Rays game from St. Petersburg, a game the Sox won, 12-6 in 12 innings. In the second inning, J.D. Drew was at the plate, when I clearly heard a voice, which I was believe was that idiotic, obnoxious leatherlung who's made a small name for himself with all the moronic yelling he does at opposition players at the Tropicana Dome. (I couldn't for the life of me tell you his name, nor do I care.)He actually yelled words at the Red Sox to the effect of: "You know the Yankees are going to catch you!" and "You guys always choke!"I couldn't help but bust out laughing hearing that. So how many times has your team won a championship, buddy? Or better yet, how many times has your team not finished last in their history, pal?It also reminded me of the time back in 2004 when a group of Devil Rays fans were behind home plate during a Red Sox-Devil Rays game at the Trop and they all held up signs saying, "1918." That was really funny. (And please see the p | | By: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine | | |
| | Red Sox Decapitate And Dismember The D'Rays-----Hideki Okajima Is An All Star!! | | 2007-07-06 12:20:00 | | Wow! 13 runs in the first three innings helped Josh "Baseball" Beckett to his 12th win of the season. The batting heroes were many, but if I had to pick two, it would be Coco Crisp, who had a first inning grand slam off the Coke bottle, and Mike Lowell, who went 5 for 6. The Sox have scored 26 runs in their last three games, and we all have to hope they can keep it up for the three game set in Detroit that begins tonight. And if that wasn't enough excitement for Red Sox Nation and Red Sox International, there was more to come. In the sixth inning the team announced that our lefty reliever supreme, Hideki Okajima, the Darkman, had won the online balloting and will be going to the All Star game. The crowd gave him a standing ovation as he bowed to them from the bullpen. I was touched and moved. He said this, from the Courant......."I appreciate all the people who voted for me," Okajima said.
