Canon EOS 1000D (Rebel XS / Kiss F) Preview
    2008-06-10 08:24:00
When Canon launched the EOS 300D back in 2003 it was widely regarded as the first affordable digital SLR and secured Canon a seemingly indomitable number-one spot in the market. Since then the 'small' Canon has gone through three further iterations and the current model - the EOS 450D - offers a feature set and image quality that could only have been dreamed about five years ago (and at a price point well below the 300D's). However, the competition haven't been idle spectators and have recently launched a number of de-spec'ed cameras that have redefined the entry level segment and undercut the EOS 450D in the DSLR hierarchy.Canon has now responded to this mounting pressure by launching a new model one tier below the 450D in its current lineup - the EOS 1000D. It shares bits and pieces with Rebels gone by and, depending from which angle you look at it, the new model is either a stripped down 450D or a 'reheated' 400D. It's a lower specification camera than the 450D, by every measure you

Canon Digital Rebel XSi Digital Camera Review
    2008-06-03 09:13:00
The XSi is more of an evolution than a revolution; the new features it adds over previous Digital Rebels are useful (and generally well executed), but none of them add that much to the experience of using the camera. The live view makes point-and-shooters feel more at home, but focusing in that mode is a pain, as the camera has to flip the mirror back up to meter. The increase in resolution is also nice, but 10 to 12 megapixels is not a huge leap. And the optical image stabilization on the kit lens is definitely a good addition, but there are plenty of other SLRs that offer similar features. So, nothing in the XSi screams out for XTi users to upgrade. But little changes aren't a problem if the original package was good, and the XTi was a great camera. So the XSi is a great camera as well; it is easy to use and shoots great photos. It may not be a mold-breaking revolution, but it's a good upgrade to the XTi and a great camera in its own right. Camera Test: Canon EOS Rebel XSi
    2008-05-22 07:16:00
Six, eight, ten, twelve --the Rebel line continues up the megapixel count to the fourth-generation EOS Rebel XSi. But the 12.2MP XSi ($800, street, body only; $900 with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Canon EF-S IS lens) is a lot more than just another deuce worth of dots. Enough upgrades to performance and convenience have been added -- some trickle-downs from the pro-level EOS-1D series -- that the XSi qualifies far more as an enthusiast model than an entry-level one. Here are five reasons why.1. Great image qualityThe XSi uses a new Canon CMOS sensor with extra-large microlenses, plus 14-bit A/D conversion rather than 12-bit. Performance in the Pop Photo Lab was impressive: It scored Excellent image quality throughout its ISO 100-1600 range, based on Excellent resolution (2265 lines average), Excellent color accuracy, and noise levels that ranged from Very Low at ISO 100 to Moderately Low at ISO 1600. What really wowed us, though, was the consistency of its test results. At ISO 800 and 1600, res

it's hard to rebel against rebels
    2008-05-18 14:16:00
As some of you might know, my parents are retired designers and buyers in the Fashion Industry. We're not rich by any stretch of the imagination and I'm more at home at Goodwill (my dad has worked there as well as CK and high price retailers) than I am at, let's say, Saks. Their career peak was a long time ago and I won't mince words about it as they've made it aware to me they have no regrets leaving it.For all the perks of being in the Industry, they've ingrained in me the bad sometimes outweighs the good. If you're talented, cutthroat and hardworking you'll succeed in the industry. But you've got to maintain this facade constantly, or else you're out. No matter how much talent you've got, there will be three others that are willing to work for less or for nothing at all. This is why my parents retired, despite their positions and income.I've loved fashion and all aspects of it for awhile now, but I'm well are that if I were to ever work in it I would not be going into it for the mon

Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000D and DPP 3.4.1.1
    2008-05-15 08:49:00
Canon have released an update for DPP (Digital Photo Professional), their RAW image converter.Interestingly, the compatibility information in the DPP 3.4 help file mentions that it's compatible with the Digital Rebel XS/1000D. This is interesting because there currently is no Digital Rebel XS/1000D!Back in March of this year I got some information from what I can only call "an anonymous source" (not because I can't say who it was, but because I don't know who it was!) concerning such a camera which the source suggested might become available in May of 2008. There were no specifications suggested, just a name, the EOS1000D. I didn't pass this on because I don't like to spread rumors with no confirmation and just a name isn't really much information. Anyone can suggest anything, but without at least two sources (or one source that I know) I'm not inclined to pass them on. Nevertheless I've been on the lookout for further confirmation that Canon might have something new coming along calle

    Canon EOS Rebel XSi Review
    2008-05-12 11:15:00
We kicked off our session in Auto, with maximum JPEG size (4272 x 2848 pixels) and in burst mode. Here the camera handles all the settings—focus, white balance and ISO; you just adjust the zoom and fire away. And blast away the XSi certainly does. This D-SLR is far more responsive than recent Sony and Pentax models reviewed. Canon added its latest processor (DIGIC III) previously found only on much more expensive editions as well as a new AF sensor. The nine-point system also has one cross type in the center. All of this adds up to a camera that feels like it’s ready to explode when you put it into burst mode. Press the shutter and you’ll know what we mean.Canon gives the XSi a rating of 3.5 frames per second, and this was pretty close to the conclusion reached by our test results. More importantly, you can zip off 45 top-quality JPEGs or six RAW files before it takes a breather (with the flash off, of course). Again, these are stats that are much better than our recently reviewe

Bibble Pro Version 4.10 Adds Nikon D60, Canon Rebel XSi, and more
    2008-05-10 09:48:00
Bibble Labs, Inc. today announce immediate availability of Bibble Pro and Bibble Lite. Version 4.10 adds support for eight of the newest digital SLR's: Nikon D60, Canon Digital Rebel XSi (450D), Sony a200, a300, and a350, Pentax K20D and K200D, and Olympus E-420. This update also adds lens calibration data for 14 new lenses and fixes several minor issues found in previous releases. Version 4.10 is the last planned update to Bibble Lite and Bibble Pro before the launch of Bibble 5.Since the release of version 4.0 over three years ago, Bibble users have received over a dozen free updates. Many of these upgrades added major new features like digital noise reduction powered by Noise Ninja technology, Perfectly Clear One-Touch image optimizer, a RAW-level plug-in interface (with plugins available for watermarking, image framing, B&W film simulation, image toning, Zone System control, perspective correction, graduated neutral density and graduated color filter simulation, selective defocu

    Canon EOS Rebel XSi Review
    2008-05-09 13:15:00
Don’t expect anything radical here—this is a basic black D-SLR with a matte-black body and some textured finish on the pistol grip and rear thumb rest. Yes, there’s an option for a silver body, but if you’re buying a camera of this type, black is what you want. The XSi is definitely lighter than the models we’ve recently reviewed (more plastic, less metal). It weighs 16.8 ounces for the body alone, 25.6 with battery and kit lens. To some, this lighter weight could be considered a bonus, since it means less shoulder ache as you walk around with the camera and it’s easier to hold steady (depending on the lens, of course). Others, however, might think they’re being shortchanged and prefer a more robust frame. As for pure dimensions, the XSi measures 5.1 x 3.8 x 2.4 (WHD, in inches) – fairly standard specs, but a shade taller than competitors. The front is dominated by the EF lens mount. Canon has loads of options beyond the supplied 3x Image Stabilized lens (over 60) and the

    Canon Rebel XSi Review
    2008-05-02 08:20:00
Expectations for the XSi were admittedly high, and hence the opportunities for Canon to come up short in the court of public opinion were numerous. In spite of this high bar, the XSi will unquestionably win converts to Canon with its (still) excellent AF system, super-smooth CMOS sensor with very impressive high ISO performance, and (for some users, at least) reasonably functional live view system. Default image processing is perhaps a little bland, though the opportunities to fine tune it are among the best found on an entry-level DSLR. Great lens and flash selections, an interface that works well for those who like dedicated controls for nearly every function, and plenty of opportunities for customization will further entice serious shooters looking for a lot of power on the cheap. For more mainstream photographers, however, sub-par kit lenses, average build quality and ergonomics, and a total use experience that takes some getting used to may all be turn offs. As a general photograph

Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi hands-on preview
    2008-04-30 08:03:00
Four and a half years have passed since the first affordable digital SLR from Canon; the EOS 300D (Digital Rebel). In that time we have witnessed two further iterations (the EOS 350D and EOS 400D) leading up to todays fourth generation EOS 450D, with twice the megapixel count of the original (twelve versus six) in a smaller body with a far wider range of functionality and features and a $200 lower list price. Since those heady days in 2004 when the EOS 300D was the only kid on the block we've seen Nikon, Pentax and Olympus all attempt to hit the same sweet spot of size, features and price at the 'lower end' of the DSLR market, with varying degrees of success. Without a doubt the EOS 450D will have to do more today to prove itself against the popular Nikon D40 / D40X / D60 and to a lesser degree the Pentax K200D and Olympus E-420.On the third page of this review you'll find a detailed breakdown of all of the changes and updates compared to the EOS 400D but the headlines are; a larger 3.

DSLR Remote Pro v1.7 extends the photo booth mode and adds support for the Canon EOS 450D/Rebel XSi, including remote live view display with auto-focus. Photo booth mode is added to PSRemote v1.6.Chris Breeze writes"Photo booth mode was introduced to DSLR Remote Pro last year in response to the increasing popularity of these booths at events. Tory rebel Bob Spink becomes Ukip's first MP
    2008-04-22 06:33:52
The Daily Telegraph has announced that the UK Independence Party will announce today that Mr. Robert Spink, formerly of the Conservative Party will join the party. The BBC announces that he already has!So UKIP gets its first MP. It would have been better for them, I suppose, if they had won the seat in an election, but gaining a seat by whatever means (foul ones excluded, of course!) is OK. UKIP can be pleased that they have an MP, two peers, and ten MEPs. Makes a baker's dozen! When I posted before that Bob Spink might join UKIP I was told "You're welcome to him!". As I'm not a member of UKIP, I'm not bothered in that sense. However, it helps the cause of those against the centralising powers and interfering nature of the European Union. Personally I want to see the EU transformed into a Commonwealth of Europe. I want a big exit door constructed for the European Parliament, the Council of Ministers, and all the brown envelope brigade of Brussels to go through so that they get the sort

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi (EOS 450D) Review
    2008-04-20 12:21:00
I've only worked with the Digital Rebel XSi and the 18-55IS and 55-250IS for a few hours at this point, taking around 180 shots. Overall I have a favorable impression of both the cama and lenses and togther I think they would make a very capable kit for someone just getting into DSLR photography. The XSi seems simple enough for anyone to use at the default settings, but offers a large degree of manual control for those who want to move beyond the basics. You could think of the XSi as pretty much an "EOS 40D Lite". The lenses, while probably not the best optics in the world, are quite good and the IS system seems to be effective. If I was buying the camera, I'd definitely get the kit with the 18-55IS included.Of course many potential buyers of the XSi might wonder if they should spend $250-300 more for the EOS 40D. The 40D is more solidly built and has a few more professional features as described in my XTi vs. XSi vs. EOS 40D article.Another option for those who don't already have an i

Canon EOS Rebel XSi / 450D DSLR Preview
    2008-04-13 12:59:00
Canon announced their latest entry-level digital SLR, the 12.2-megapixel EOS Rebel XSi, at the annual PMA tradeshow this January. Last week, when Adobe released the update for Lightroom 1.4.1 with support for the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, I decided to see if I could buy one. None of the big online camera dealers listed it as available. But my hunch proved right when I got lucky at my local big box electronics store and snatched up their only XSi kit. I have a mountain bike festival coming up in a week and rather than wait for Canon to send me an XSi, I figured I’d just buy one so I could test it at the bike event. My complete Canon EOS Rebel XSi review will take a few weeks to complete. But I made a concerted effort to get some basic testing done so I can give you my first impressions. I haven’t had a chance to do one-to-one comparisons with studio tests from other cameras yet, or make test prints – the ultimate proof of image quality, in my opinion. But I am very impressed with the i

Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi Review
    2008-04-13 12:51:00
Canon's EOS 450D - or Digital Rebel XSi as it's known in North America - is the company's latest DSLR and the successor to the hugely popular EOS 400D / Rebel XTi. It features a raft of improvements including higher 12.2 Megapixel resolution, a stabilised kit lens, a bigger 3in screen, Live View with the choice of two different AF systems, a bigger viewfinder, quicker continuous shooting, a number of processing features from the higher-end EOS 40D, and PC remote control software. That's an impressive list but does Canon have another best-seller on its hands? Find out in our Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi review where we'll compare it against its predecessor and key rivals including Sony's Alpha A350. And as always, for a demonstration of its highlights, check out our Canon EOS 450D / Rebel XSi video tour.more : cameralabs

    Canon Rebel XSi First Thoughts
    2008-04-07 10:42:00
For better or worse, this is it: the standard by which this year's entry-level DSLRs will be judged. Owing more than a little to its prevalence in electronics and discount stores (but also, in fairness, to extremely consistent performance from previous generations), Canon's Digital Rebel models have been at the center of the consumer-grade DSLR explosion of the last few years. For this reason, while there may have been more flashy or exciting releases this spring, the Canon Rebel XSi has been for many the most anticipated new model of the year. The physical interface on the XSi (a.k.a EOS 450D) has been reworked compared to previous Rebels, consolidating more of the controls on one side of the screen (and thus allowing for a larger 3-inch display without expanding the body).David Rasnakemore : digitalcamerareview

    Canon Rebel XSi/450D Review
    2008-03-31 10:24:00
The Canon Rebel XTi/400D is a very capable camera and now we got the new Rebel XSi/450D.There are a lot of new features packed into this camera: 12MP: This is the least exciting improvement. We do not favor the Megapixel war, dictated by marketing. But on the other side this camera seems to show that Canon can get more pixels while keeping image quality (see later).Live View: This is so far the most complete Live View implementation in any Canon camera. We won't want to miss this new Live View. o It makes focusing in Live View possible. We actually use the Quick Mode: the camera flips the mirror down and uses the usual AF camera mode. The second method does not require the mirror to flip down and uses the same contrast method implemented in digicams. This unfortunately is quite slow.o Live view features a full color channel histogram to tune exposure3" LCDImproved larger Viewfinder viewHighlight Priority Mode14-bit RAW filesUwe Steinmuellermore : outbackphoto

Chad's government displayed more than 100 prisoners it said were captured during a rebel assault on the capital this month, branding them Sudanese mercenaries, Islamic militants and members of al Qaeda. The prisoners, many of them children, were packed into a tiny courtyard of N'Djamena's police headquarters which smelt of excrement."They are from the Islamic Legion, from al Qaeda, or purely and simply mercenaries," said Interior Minister Mahamat Ahmat Bachir, as he showed journalists an ammunition box filled with ID cards and documents he claimed belonged to the rebels.

    2007-05-10 14:51:00
It may look like it has been cobbled together with Lego and sticky-back plastic, but this is what we all should be driving by 2020, according to a team of car designers. The 'youth' car has been created by Kazunori Inomota, Edward Stubbs and Mujammil Khan-Muztar, graduates of Coventry University's Automotive Design MA course. The car was penned with an eye on the Scion brand, which is a yoof-oriented make sold in the US and owned by Toyota. Think funked-up Yaris models and you're on the right track.Called the Rebel, the design can be chopped and changed to suit any mood or need, even allowing a bed to be made on the floor.Power comes from an electric battery that drives individual motors in each wheel, which also regenerate electricity as the car slows. The designers reckon a number of car companies will be interested and even non-car companies such as Apple.Via TopGear
