| | 2 Minutes on Social Media and Recruiting | | 2008-08-08 09:49:00 | | I had the pleasure of sharing a table with Bill Vick yesterday morning over a cup of coffee. It's funny....Bill flatters all of us by inviting us to be interviewed for a spot on on XtremeRecruiting.tv,when, actually, he knows more about recruiting than most of us will forget in our life-time.It's a rare find - a big-billing recruiter who is as kind and considerate as he is humble (our industry needs a few more Bill Vick-like leaders). We talked a lot about recruiting and social media. I'm not sure if it was the strong French coffee or just the conversation, but I was so wired up when I left there was nothing to do but reach for the video camera. Of course, I suppose I don't need much excuse to grab the camera.Bill - thanks for making me think about what we do and why we do it. | | By: WirelessJobs.com | | |

| | | | Spring Practice and Recruiting | | 2008-03-19 05:08:00 | | Check out Manny's blog to hear news straight from the players' mouths about the 2008 football team. I really got a kick out of Shannon tossing everyone out after finding out that some website posted the entire previous scrimmage online. The tough guy attitude doesn't necessarily work (see Saban and the Dolphins) if you don't have the players, but it's still nice to see some fire from the coaching staff. Coker would have probably expressed mild disappointment and let it continue. From what I've gathered over the past few weeks, it will be a shock to see anyone but Robert Marve starting. I'm not sure I like the idea of rotating quarterbacks per se. It worked for UF in 2006 with Tebow and Leak, but this team is nowhere near a championship. There are examples of other semi-successful experiments with it (David Greene and DJ Shockley come to mind, and no it's not a white/black QB thing), but this is a young team. I'd rather have one guy back there leading them.If we do end up going with just | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Quickie Recruiting Tidbit | | 2008-03-12 19:17:00 | | Andre Debose, a 4-star (Scout) WR/ATH out of Sanford, FL recently received an offer from Coach Aubrey Hill and looks incredibly impressed by our program. He had been leaning towards South Carolina, but from what he has said following the offer, I would have to say Miami is way out in front for the time being. I would hesitate to call him a lock because we still have 11 months till Signing Day 2009.Additionally, Robert Marve's former teammate at Plant in Tampa, TE Orson Charles, has Miami out in front. We already have a commitment from Billy Sanders, and have legacy Austin Fitzpatrick high on us as well. It might be a bit too much to sign three tight ends in this class when we only have about 20 scholarships to offer. | | By: State of Miami | | |

| | Television deal will kill SDSU recruiting | | 2008-02-21 15:54:00 | | Let’s say you are a top high school prospect and want to play college sports where you can get a lot of television exposure. If so, then you can forget about attending San Diego State. The television deal that the Mountain West Conference has is eventually going to destroy some teams – and SDSU could be at the top of the list. The conference has a ridiculous deal whereby most of its teams have conference games televised on a network called themtn.Only 1.2 million people nationwide get the channel. The number is extremely low in San Diego because you must have Cox Communications digital cable to watch themtn.Whenever SDSU football or basketball games are televised on themtn., there probably aren’t 1,000 local households watching … or able to watch.Sadly, any top recruit who wants his or her friends and relatives see them play on TV will want to go to a school where people actually get the channel which televises their games. This certainly works if you are on networks such as ESPN, | | By: San Diego Sporting | | |

| | Late Weekend Recruiting Notes | | 2008-01-27 21:05:00 | | I'm sure many of you are on the edge of your seats wondering where all the remaining uncommitted players will be heading. There is only a little over a week until Signing Day, so we won't have to wait much longer. Several kids visited the U this weekend, and from what I've heard, things are looking well for the 2008 class. Most were Miami verbals already, but the weekend was crucial to solidify some "soft" verbals (depending on what you define as soft) in Jeremy Lewis and Marcus Robinson, as well as attracting players who are are yet to commit, such as CB Alonzo Lawrence.First off, cornerback stud Brandon Harris gave his visit a 10 and later said that he would feel comfortable with a decision to attend the University of Miami. However, he will make his choice on signing day and it's not absolutely certain he will come here. It looks good, but he said he would also feel comfortable with any of his other choices as well.As for TJ Bryant, he was here earlier in the week and enjoyed himself. Many are very optimistic about our chances with him, but I wouldn't get too excited yet if I were you. What I read is favorable, but these things are so tricky that you never know until they sign the dotted line. Even then there's no guarantee they stick around their entire careers.Another 5 star player we are targeting, Jamie Harper, was visited by Randy Shannon tonight in an attempt to sway him to play for the Canes. Most feel Harper is heading to Clemson with his buddy Daniel Andrews. Landing him would be a coup because he is a combination of power and speed that reminds people of Willis McGahee. That guy was pretty good, if I recall correctly.Next is 3/4 star TE Brandon Moore, currently committed to Michigan. This was an interesting one because I had never even heard of him before he took his visit this weekend and called it "the best visit I've had in my life". Getting him to switch over would be a nice addition to the class and might not be too difficult considering the | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Late Night Recruiting | | 2008-01-23 22:19:00 | | Before I work on my thoughts on the UNC game, there are a couple of things from recruiting circles I thought I'd mention.First off, there is a rumor that PJ has officially been denied admission to LSU. The story is up on Rivals, so while there is definitely smoke, it remains to be seen if there is fire. I wouldn't doubt it though. Looks like sneaky PJ will have to go the JUCO or prep school route. I suppose in his case he'll enjoy playing the games for another year before he chooses another school. Hopefully he will mature over that time. Some suggested he might have already contacted Randy Shannon about returning to the Canes' class, but I doubt that has happened and if it did, there's no way that Shannon would let him back in at this point, barring an extremely short leash on Johnson. Then there are the rumors that another stud player hasn't been able to enroll. Unfortunately that one is solid commit Aldarius Johnson. The other 3 MNW players are in, but neither Johnson nor Jordan Futch were able to get in early. However, sources are saying that Johnson should be in tomorrow, so we shouldn't be worried Canes tonight. Futch will have to enroll in Summer classes. | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Recruiting Wrapup | | 2008-01-23 18:41:00 | | The final two weeks of the 2007-2008 recruiting season are upon us and things are heating up in every direction. First off, if you want an excellent list and analysis of who our final targets are before NSD, I suggest you read Manny's blog at the Herald. I was going to write something similar, but I'd rather not be redundant. However, there are some bits and pieces of info I've read about that are still worth mentioning. First off, Florida's class continues to grow stronger with the addition of 5 star DT Omar Hunter. Hunter was a Notre Dame commitment last month. All this coming off the recent news of potential violations by coach Urban Meyer. As for potential UM guys, there is news for us as well. TJ Bryant is on campus as I write this, probably getting prepared to watch the UM-UNC basketball game. With the Buchanon and Johnson defections, landing him and/or Brandon Harris is absolutely crucial to this class. I like our chances with the former, but he has kept it so close to the vest that I'm worried it might be another Bobby Bowden special. As for Harris, news on him is all over the place. Some sources had him leaning to LSU. Others cited his desire to go out of state and have him being a Buckeye. Earlier today I read a very reliable UM source claim Brandon is a solid Cane, so that is a bit more relieving. We'll see on Signing Day.Another guy we might land is Gavin Hardin. He was a soft verbal to Ole Miss, but after opening up his commitment and visiting Miami, there seems to be a good chance he ends up a Cane. However, early suggestions he was committing as soon as today seem to be off base. Now he too, will decide on signing day. I was optimistic about him over the weekend, but with a visit coming up to Ole Miss, I wouldn't be surprised if he reaffirms his commitment to the Rebels.Losing him would be tough because DE Keith Wells is no longer an option due to some "character flaws" both the FSU and UM staffs dug up. Also, Nick Perry is expected to sign with M | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | | | Recruiting: A Look Back to 2005... | | 2008-01-18 00:02:00 | | ...And a look forward to 2008. So far, I've made an analysis regarding our 2003 and 2004 classes, and why their failures have led to a severe dip in our success on the field. We all know what happened. We finished at or around 500 in both seasons, an embarrassing turn of events for a once proud program. The question is how soon can this be turned around?Let's take a look at the 2005 class and what we should expect from the 2008 football team.First off, this was a pretty small class. We only brought in 17 kids. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, except Coker signed only 6 on offense, and no QB's, RBs, or WRs. The only non-blocking offensive player he signed was DajLeon Farr and he is gone. That is not a good sign for this team.Of the 17 kids from that class, a few won't be on next year's team. 5 star TE DajLeon Farr was a bust, and transferred to Memphis. Demetri Stewart followed him on the way out, but the 3/4 star linebacker wasn't expect to do as much as Farr. Kenny Phillips also won't be on the team, but he was the class' best prospect, a 5 star safety who should be selected in the first round this April. That leaves only 14 guys left from an entire recruiting class to step up as this team's starters and leaders. The 2008 offense will be hurt badly by the lack of any skill position players being signed in 2005. Of those who were signed, 5* OL Reggie Youngblood (an ok player, but a disappointing career so far), 4* OL AJ Trump (hasn't played much, should land a starting job this year), 3/4* Chris Barney (hasn't done much) and 3* Matt Pipho (hasn't done much) are all we've got. Jerrell Mabry is still around, but the massive 3* FB isn't an impact player and will likely lose his job to incoming JUCO Pat Hill. Before I even get to the defense, I have to stress how much of a joke it is that Larry Coker and his staff didn't sign ANY players on offense. The 5 that are left are all blockers that don't project to be impact players at the next level unless Y | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | | | | Recruiting: A Look Back to 2003 | | 2008-01-15 20:52:00 | | Recently, I wrote a piece regarding our 2004 recruiting class and the disappointment stemming from that class reflecting on the field in 2007. I thought it might be a good exercise to do similar pieces on the 2003 and 2005 classes to see where this team has come from, and what we should expect next season.Obviously, many of the 2008 commits will have immediate impacts on the 2008 team, and while that is exciting, it's not necessarily a good thing for the short term. It will pay dividends in '09 and '10, but for now, the guys who will influence our success the most will theoretically be from the 2005 class. On to 2003 and why last year's team finished 7-6 and with a better record than this season's 5-7 club, despite being coached by a largely inept Larry Coker...The 2003 class featured a couple mega-busts and several highly rated players that panned out. Despite what our record suggested, our team in 2006 had some serious talent. We only signed 21 kids that year, and from that number only Leo Waiters (academics), Kevin Everett (JUCO who went to draft), Alton Wright (JUCO), Dave Howell (transfer to Portland State) weren't on the team. The one guy that didn't make the team that REALLY hurt us last season was Ali Highsmith, who just finished winning a national title with LSU. However, he couldn't qualify academically, so that's not Coker's fault.Of the kids who did stick around for the long run, only one, Cyrim Wimbs, can be called a guy who rarely got any playing time. Cyrim was a 3-star guy who never really made a huge impact on this team, but wasn't necessarily a waste of a scholarship either. Therefore, it should be argued that the team had a nice haul from it's relatively small class. Not necessarily. Many of our guys had playing time, but were not the playmakers we expected when we signed them.On the defensive line, we had 3 guys who were still around last season from this 2003 class. 4 star Vegas Franklin, a solid kid who fits decently in a rotation but | | By: State of Miami | | |

| | Scotty Hopson Performance and Recruiting Rumors | | 2008-01-09 15:25:00 | | In the King of the Bluegrass Classic Louisville Male edged out Scotty Hopson's University Heights team for the crown. The game came down to the final two seconds when senior guard Rodd Lanon made a runner in the lane to seal a 53-51 victory for Louisville Male. Lanon finished with 13 points and 6 assists, with Bryce Mitchell adding 14 points and Dexter Shannon contributed 11 points and 12 rebounds. Scotty Hopson lead University Heights with 19 points and 10 rebounds and was named the tourney MVP.The recruiting rumors are swirling so take them for what they are worth. It is rumored that Tennessee is leading in the Scotty Hopson sweepstakes and that it woudl take a lot to steer Scotty away from the Vols. Not that this is keeping Texas and Louisville from pushing very hard of late, but they have a lot of room to make up. The rumors also say that UK's Gillespie has elected to not pursue Hopson due to his reputation for slacking off at times during games. Seems Billy wants all hustlers in his next class. Guess he's tired of watching Crawford take rests while he's supposed to be defending. | | By: Louisville Cardinal Basketball Recruiting Blog | | |
| | Recap of Today's Recruiting Events | | 2008-01-05 15:04:00 | | Technically, I'm supposed to be classy about recruits and where they go. These are young kids making big decisions, so you can't fault them for where they choose to play ball. So wishing them ill is not a mature thing to do. However, certain situations call for criticism of these "kids". I was 18 just a few years ago, and I never would have pulled some of the stunts some of these guys are doing.I would have been fine with Matt Patchan going to LSU. Everyone has a right to go to a school other than the U. And to be fair, Matt handled his recruitment very well. He refused to string anyone along ala Patrick Johnson. He announced his decision to go to UF and that's fair enough. However, after ripping this team for their disappointing performance versus Virginia, you would think he would have it in him to back it up.Instead, the Cane legacy chose to play for an established contender in the Gators rather than make his own mark here in Coral Gables. If you are going to call out a team for | | By: State of Miami | | |
| | Canes Recruiting News | | 2008-01-02 17:19:00 | | The past few days have been part of the dead period, so no visits and almost nothing substantial to report on the recruiting front. However, there are lots of bits of news that you should know about.Patrick Johnson decommitted, which is fine. However, he didn't leave without some controversy. Apparently, PJ decided to spin the story in his favor rather than just take the high road and tell the truth. The way he handled his recruitment has been appalling. He told UNC people he was going there. He told the Noles he was decommitting to them. The same goes for the Gators. He even admitted to enjoying the process of recruiting so he could screw around with certain websites and feed them lies. He'll finally decide on Saturday at the Army All-American game, and then good riddance. The coaches wanted him to come here, but aren't about to take his crap if he doesn't want to be here. I especially like their attitude: "The first pass we throw against him will go over his head for a touchdown." | | By: State of Miami | | |

| | | | | Hopson Comments on Recruiting | | 2007-12-09 14:51:00 | | As seen on Mo SPorts Rivals. an article talks about Scotty Hopson,"As for his recruitment, Hopson said that Tennessee, Louisville and Kentucky have been in contact with him and have offered scholarships. He also said it was his understanding that Indiana, Georgia and Georgia Tech had contacted his high school coach. Hopson also had these comments on his situation."I'm just weighing my options," said Hopson. "Signing is a big decision, and I want to make sure I make the right decision. "I want to play in an up tempo system and get up and down the floor. That is the way I like to play. I'm also looking for a coach who knows how to develop pros and how much T.V. exposure the team gets."Sounds like he is looking to go to Louisville! You can fread the entire article here. | | By: Louisville Cardinal Basketball Recruiting Blog | | |
| | Recruiting Rankings vs Performance | | 2007-12-08 17:59:00 | | I found an interesting link on the Hive (Georgia Tech Scout.com site) regarding recruiting rankings vs performance on the field. The recruiting rankings are averaged from two major recruiting services with more weight being given to the classes farther back than those of last year due to likelihood of impact on the field. The current team ranking is based on over 20 services rankings, not just the AP, Coaches, or BCS Polls.Of the 20 most overachieving teams, only Wake Forest (13) appeared from the ACC or SEC. Jim Grobe and his staff have done an excellent job coaching which culminated in an ACC title last year. BCS teams Hawaii and Kansas appears at numbers 2 and 8 respectively, while West Virginia checks in at 15.Of the 10 most underachieving teams, 4 are from the ACC (Miami, North Carolina, Duke, NC State). Miami is the most underachieving with a disparity of 64 spots from the avg. recruit rank of 8.38 to an actual field rank of 73 this year. From the SEC, Ole Miss was one of | | By: ACC SEC Blog | | |
| | Gen Y, BioData, and Social Media (the Dallas Recruiting Roadshow) | | 2007-12-05 07:01:00 | | Big fun yesterday at the Roadshow, as 130 or so recruiters in North Dallas met at the UD campus in Frisco, TX.It was great to put names with faces that, until then, were only connections via ERE, LinkedIn or Facebook.I had the chance to make some new friends (shout out to Kyle Smith, Dir. of Op's at CiCi's; and Angela Bell, Recruiter at Insight). And, I reconnected with one of my favorite people in the world, Karen Chow, who's been at AT&T for what, 11 or 12 years?! Little known trivia...Karen was the first recruiter to interview me for my 1st corporate recruiting job back in the 90's. I'm so glad she said yes.John, Bill, Martin, and Hank were all terrific - providing differing perspectives on what's going on in the world of recruiting, and how we must change the way we think (and act) to reach this generation (and the next) of job seekers. And, you'd have thought Jerry Seinfeld had developed a cool accent the way Ami was bringing down the house with his networking activit | | By: WirelessJobs.com | | |
| | | | FNL still arming and recruiting children, un-named European country denies humanitarian assistance to FNL deserters | | 2007-12-03 06:33:00 | | UN says Burundi rebels are arming child soldiers By DANIEL K. KALINAKI The EastAfrican A draft UN Security Council report has accused Burundi’s last remaining rebel group, the Forces Nationales pour la Liberation (FNL), of recruiting and arming child soldiers. The draft report, part of which The EastAfrican has seen, will be discussed by the Security Council as early as February, which could lead to punitive action against the FNL and its leader, Agathon Rwasa, who continues to hold out against implementing terms of a peace agreement signed with President Pierre Nkurunziza’s government. “Children continue to be associated with the FNL,” the report notes. “It is reported that children are still in the ranks of the two remaining factions of FNL, the Agathon Rwasa and Jean Bosco Gateyeri groups, and ongoing recruitment of children by these groups continues to be of grave concern.” The Rome Statute bans the recruitment of child soldiers and its violation could lead to the International Criminal Court indicting Rwasa and other senior FNL leaders. The report documents 85 cases in which the FNL recruited child soldiers between October last year and July this year, with most cases coming soon after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement between the rebels and the government to end more than a decade of fighting in Burundi. “The upsurge in recruitment by the FNL is allegedly aimed at enhancing their bargaining power should further peace negotiations take place and enabling them to claim increased financial benefits during the demobilisation and reintegration phases,” the confidential Security Council report notes. The report notes that the delay in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement has forced many of these child soldiers to defect to authorities in Burundi, a development that has further raised tensions in the country. Fighters of the FNL have reportedly been attacking these defectors on their way to reception centres set up by | | By: Agathon Rwasa | | |

| | Potential Recruiting Targets for 2007-08 Recruiting Class | | 2007-12-01 13:33:00 | | Louisville is still finishing up its recruiting efforts for the 2007-08 year.Since they haven't signed, we're including Kyle Kuric and Melquan Bolding (even though rumors are that Melquan is on the way out due to grades) as targets. Other targets are Tyreke Evans and, with his latest issues with Mississippi State, Scotty Hopson. We'll post information and linsk to articles about these players and those for Louisvilles existing signess - Samardo Samuels, Terrence Jennings, and Jared Swopshire.Regarding the performances of some of our recruiting targets-U of L target, Scotty Hopson started his season scoring 33 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots in a 74-61 win over Clarksville of Tenn. According to outsiders, U.T. coach, Bruce Pearl, was supposed to watch the game. Unfortunately (boohoo for UT), Pearl didn't make the trip because of bad weather. In his latest game (last night), Scotty went 12-for-18 from the field in the second half and with 24 points to finish with a game-high 32 in leading his University Heights team to a 72 to 55 win over Tates Creek.U of L commitment, Kyle Kuric started his senior season with 36 points, 11 rebounds and two assists in a 91-58 victory over Henderson County. | | By: Louisville Cardinal Basketball Recruiting Blog | | |

| | Dallas Recruiting Roadshow - 3 Reasons to Accept this Invitation | | 2007-11-13 14:26:00 | | Consider the problems:1. Understanding the real impact of shifting demographics, how to adapt for the Gen-Y workforce and anticipating the supply and demand of tough-to-source skill sets make planning less certain today than ever before.2. Keeping up with the dizzying array of new sourcing tools, social networks, emerging technologies, recruiting trends, and how all of this change can help or hurt your recruiting efforts is becoming a daunting task.3. Staying connected with peers and industry leaders to share easy access to local resources, learning, and support is seen more as a luxury as the ‘price of admission’ continues to skyrocket. On Tuesday, December 4 join industry analyst and Recruiting.com’s editor John Sumser and area leaders Bill Vick (Xtreme Recruiting), Dennis Smith (WorldLink, Inc and WirelessJobs.com) and Martin Birnbach (Talk Radio 570 KLIF’s recruiting guru) and their ‘on-air’ guests: Steven Rothberg (CollgeRecruiter.com), Jason Davis (RecruitingBlogs.com) | | By: WirelessJobs.com | | |

| | Social Media - Networking - Recruiting ... in Texas | | 2007-11-07 14:05:00 | | Recruiters today are challenged with having to bridge an ever-widening gap in the demand and supply of good recruits. The only thing that narrows is the time in which candidate flow is expected. The promise of social networks like LinkedIn, Facebook, and MySpace to make active and passive candidates easier to reach can sometimes widen the gap between daily grind and “best-practice.” The only thing that narrows is the attention span we can give to every new site, tool, application and widget that pops up. Very few in the industry have been witness to the increasing pace and complexity of online recruiting from the time the first job board appeared up to today. Even fewer have helped shape recruiters’ understanding of these things, laying the foundations for recruiting in a time where meshing emerging technologies with recruiting commonsense really does help bridge the gap. | | Recruiting Conference Overview ...Boston rocks | | 2007-10-11 14:13:00 | | The Recruiting Excellence 2007 Conference is finished and I'm headed out of Boston today (by the way, I think I just had the best bowl of Clam Chowder known to man).Lou Adler talked about how to reach passive inactive candidates yesterday, and as usual, Lou was just terrific. I could sit and listen to Lou talk recruiting all day.Harry Griendling, CEO of DoubleStar, Inc gave us 10 Sullivan-like myths about recruiting. I didn't agree with all of them, but when I get back to work, I'll throw a few out for you to chew on.John Lanning, Sales/Marketing Recruiting Manager from 3m talked about recruiting for the future and this former football coach knows how to keep an audience engaged. Excellent job, John!I also met some terrific recruiting leaders this week - if you are in need of a new Dir/VP of Recruiting to lead your staff, I probably have their business card in my wallet! (don't worry folks, your information is not for sale!).By the way, Glenn Gutmacher's presentation was excellent - this guy is a sourcing genius and Microsoft is lucky he's on their team. | | By: WirelessJobs.com | | |
