    5V 3A Regulate power supply by TIP2955
    2008-03-05 23:28:11
If you require more than 1 amp, the 7805 can be combined with other components to provide an output of up to 3 amps, with the circuit below. The current is switched through the TIP2955, so the 7805 can be run without a heatsink since it only regulates the voltage. Note the 3-amp diodes in [...]

Gene Variations Help Regulate Response to Stress
    2008-02-12 05:30:00
(HealthDay News) -- Certain variations in a gene that helps regulate stress response offer protection against depression in adults who suffered abuse when they were children, a new study says.Adults who were abused as children and didn't have the protective variations of the CRHR1 gene had twice the symptoms of moderate to severe depression, compared to those with the variations. The researchers interviewed more than 400 adults and tested their DNA. About one-third of them had the protective variations in the gene that produces CRHR1, a receptor for the stress hormone corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH).Extreme stress in childhood, brought on by factors such as abuse, can hyper-activate the hormone system that regulates stress response, leading to an increased risk of depression in adulthood, the researchers said."Our results suggest that genetic differences in CRH-mediated neurotransmission may change the developmental effects that childhood abuse can have on the stress hormone syste

    China to regulate Dalai's heirs
    2007-08-04 23:31:00
Communist China has issued new rules to regulate the reincarnation of Living Buddhas, which include the Panchen and the Dalai Lama. The move is seen as an attempt to thwart any eventuality like the possible birth of a Living Buddha in India to replace the ageing Dalai Lama, or any attempt by his close followers to find his successor. The history of Buddhism — including Tibetan Buddhism — have instances of Living Buddhas being born outside the Tibetan region. The sixth Dalai Lama and renowned poet, Tsangyang Gyatso, was born in Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh.

    2007-07-27 14:30:00
Chairman of Aging Committee Delivers on Promise to “Hold Feet to the Fire”WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI), Chairman of the Senate Special Committee on Aging, was joined today by Senators Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) in introducing the Accountability and Transparency in Medicare Marketing Act of 2007. The bill would give state insurance commissioners the ability to develop standardized marketing and sales regulations of Medicare Advantage (MA) and Medicare prescription drug plans, and regulate both agents and companies in the marketing and sales of MA and prescription drug plans. If passed, the legislation would enable state insurance commissioners to adequately serve and protect Medicare beneficiaries in conjunction with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Currently, states are largely pre-empted from regulating the marketing of MA and Medicare Part D plans. The marketing guidelines for these plans were established by CMS and have pr

    2007-04-26 08:01:08
I’ve been so busy the last few weeks I missed this altogether. Many thanks to Jenny, a Highlight HEALTH email subscriber, for bringing this to my attention. A new U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) docket was published on the FDA website last month. The draft guidance, when finalized, will represent the FDA’s current thinking on complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Docket No. 2006D-0480: Draft Guidance for Industry on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products and Their Regulation by the Food and Drug Administration (1) discusses when a CAM product is subject to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act) or the Public Health Service (PHS) Act. Here’s the important part in the draft: “The draft guidance makes the following two fundamental points: First, depending on the CAM therapy or practice, a product used in a CAM therapy or practice may be subject to regulation as a biological product, cosmetic, drug, device, or food (including fo
