Phelps claims Olympic-record eighth gold medal with relay win
    2008-08-18 20:15:00
BEIJING (AP) -- Michael Phelps locked arms with his three teammates, as though they were in a football huddle calling a play, then hugged each one of them.It took a team to make him the grandest of Olympic champions. And one last big push from Phelps himself.Going hard right to the end of a mesmerizing nine days in Beijing, Phelps helped the Americans come from behind Sunday in a race they've never lost at the Olympics, cheering from the deck as Jason Lezak brought it home for a world record in the 400-meter medley relay. It was Phelps' history-making eighth gold medal of these games."Everything was accomplished," he said. "I will have the medals forever."Phelps sure did his part to win No. 8, eclipsing Mark Spitz's seven-gold performance at the 1972 Munich Games.Aaron Peirsol got the Americans off to the lead in the backstroke, but Brendan Hansen -- a major disappointment in this Olympic year -- slowed them down with only the third-fastest breaststroke leg.By the time Phelps dived in

Torch Relay In Tibet Met With Big Protest
    2008-06-21 21:35:35
The Tibet Autonomous Regional Government was confident to have a safe and successful Olympic torch relay on Saturday, said Palma Trily, executive vice chairman of Tibet, here on Friday. He said police have been deployed to ensure security during the relay, but there was none from the People's Liberation Army (PLA),as "the duty of the PLA is to guard the frontier and protect the territory." He made the remarks while meeting a 50-strong delegation of journalists, including staff from 29 overseas news organizations."We believe activities against the people's will and against the historical trend doom to fail," said the official when he was asked whether the Dalai Lama clique would sabotage the torch relay. He said sabotage activities would exist as long as the clique existed, even after the torch relay concluded in Tibet. Five organization including "Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC)", "Tibetan Women's Association (TWA)" had threatened to sabotage the torch relay. Also at the press conference,

San Francisco Torch Relay Pushes Through
    2008-04-08 11:30:09
Contrary to reports and calls for the torch relay to be canceled due to strong protests coming from Tibet supporters and human rights activists, the Olympic torch arrived today and its 6 mile relay will push through in observance of tradition to symbolize the Olympics spirit and the athletes' aspirations for the coming 2008 Beijing Olympic games.Scores of protesters have already gone ahead in making their presence felt by scaling the Golden Gate bridge and posting banners in support of their causes. Upon the Olympic torch's arrival however, none of them seem to be present. Security officials claim they will be treating the Olympic torch's arrival like a state visit from a head of state. Security has been closely guarded and plans of re-routing the 6 mile run of the Olympics torch is in place just in case protesters get another chance like they did in London and France earlier.Watch This Video of the Olympics torch arriving in San Francisco

Riots Erupt In Paris Leg Oympic Torch Relay
    2008-04-07 14:22:22
I knew it was coming! The desperation of human rights activists have finally come at its peak. In France, the Olympic Torch relay had been interrupted twice and had to be discontinued due to mobbing protesters supporting Tibet's cause.Demonstators were kept well away from the Olympic torch by a strong French Police protection yet a few managed to come as close as an arm's length of the torch bearer. Many protesters were hurled tear gas as they performed a sit-in strike. They draped the Eiffel tower and Paris City hall with protest banners. The Olympic torch had to be extinguished twice for the whole Paris leg but Jean-Francois Lamour former French Sports Minister said that the original Olympic flame which symbolizes the Olympic spirit is kept safe and lit in the original lantern in the place where it is kept overnight and on airplane flights.Check out these featured videos of the scene in Paris France over the weekend.

London Olympic relay runs into Tibetan protests!
    2008-04-06 11:42:27
The Chinese automatons running alongside the Olympic flame looked more cheesed off than worried. Demonstrators have been out in force in London trying to promote awareness of Chinese brutality in Tibet. My take on this is that the Chinese have no business in Tibet. It's not their country! Tibetans are not Chinese and the Chinese are not Tibetans. On top of that, there is a total lack of democratic accountability. People are being abused, culturally isolated, and generally being "controlled".I have heard it said that the Olympics should not be about politics, and that would be fair enough if we lived in a world where everyone was able to live without torture and terror. However, the Tibetans are not so free and easy. China may not like this but they are going to have to live with it. Some of us can't stomach what they are currently serving up!We in Britain, just as in other Western countries, have to consider every day what we are buying. You can't go into Argos now without buying someth

Olympic Torch Relay History, Peking 2008
    2008-03-07 09:06:00
The first runner of Olympic Torch, the young athlete Konstantinos Kondylis Fire is a sacred symbol dating back to prehistoric times. In ancient Greece it symbolized the creation of the world, renewal and light. It was also the sacred symbol of Hephaestus, and a gift to the human race from Prometheus, who stole it from Zeus. At the centre of every city-state in ancient Greece there was an altar with an ever-burning fire and in every home the sacred Flame burned, dedicated to Hestia, goddess of the family. Torch Relay races started in ancient Greece as religious rituals held at night. Soon they turned into a team athletic event, initially among adolescents, and further developed to become one of the most popular ancient sports. The enchanting power of fire was a source of inspiration. Sacred flames lit by the rays of the sun always burned in Olympia, in an altar dedicated to Hestia. Fire was ignited with the help of a concave mirror, which has the ability to concentrate the rays of th

Very simple IR detector that controls relay
    2007-05-23 10:59:17
The circuit of this Infrared(IR) detector circuit is a simple light relay which triggers when infrared light is applied to phototransistor Q1. This device can be used in control systems. When infrared light is OFF, Q1 transistor and relay K1 are normally closed.   When IR diode is transmitting IR light phototransistor Q1 opens and thus relay K1 triggers because current starts flowing through Q2 transistor. Construction can easily be modified when circuit output is connected to microcontroller or other device. Sensitivity so the distance can be controlled by changing IR diode D1, using more sensitive phototransistor Q1 and adjusting R2 resistor. Original source: http://cxem.net
