    DAMIRworld Remembers 911 - A Memorial And Tribute - September 11, 2001
    2008-08-17 21:50:00
I wanted to show my grief, love and support to all those who lost their lives and to those they left behind.I clearly remember people putting signs and flowers on a billboard as I walked down Broadway. They were signing the wall on the side of the street in hopes to find their loved ones. Posting notes on polls and messages for those who were missing to call home. I was in New York City and walked down the street. I asked a by-stander to take a photo. I still can't believe that was seven years ago.9/11 Photo taken just after September 11, 2001 near the Twin Towers. My heart goes out to all those who lost a family member and to those who lost their loved ones.I won't be logging into my email or my internet account on Sept. 11 in memory of all those who we lost. You can do the same.I was inspired to write a rap song over the years - thinking about our world in hope that all nations see the light. In hope that God will protect us and remember all the women and children who lost their

    2007-12-07 12:49:00
Six Degrees Records Remembers: Legendary Cuban Percussionist Carlos “Patato” ValdezThe legendary Cuban percussionist Carlos “Patato” Valdez passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, at the age of 81. Six Degrees Records would like to send their sincerest condolences to Patato’s family, friends, and fans. Six Degrees Records released Patato: The Legend of Cuban Percussion, in 2000 to great critical acclaim.“We are saddened by Patato’s passing and feel really fortunate that we got to work with him. He was truly one of the last great congueros of his generation and a really unique character as well,” says Bob Duskis, president and co-founder of Six Degrees Records. “The world of Latin music will be a more boring place without him.”Patato was a master conguero who has played with every giant in the history of salsa and jazz, including Machito, Cachao, Arsenio Rodriguez, Mario Bauza, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Mann, Art Blakey, Tito Puente and Quincy Jones. The Legend of Cuban Percussion collects the best performances from Patato’s Grammy nominated Ritmo y Candela sessions where he teamed up with Changuito, Orestes Vilató, saxophonist Enrique Fernandez, Joe Santiago, Rebeca Mauleón-Santana, African greats Samba Mapangala and Abdou M'boup, as well as young Cuban jazz stars Omar Sosa, Yosvany Terry, Ivan "Melon" Gonsalez and producer Greg Landau.“Patato was one of the great Cuban musicians who changed the way people play the instrument today, says producer Greg Landau. His humor and melodic sensibility came through his congas and gave a unique feel to everything he played on. He taught many of us how to use percussion in modern music and forged a new path for percussionists. We will miss him.”A true Cuban legend who has lived in New York since 1954, Patato was considered by many to be one of the greatest Cuban conga players of all time. His unique melodic style influenced an entire generation of percussionists and his early collaborations w

    ESPN's Gomez remembers roots
    2007-08-06 17:38:00
It’s always nice when somebody becomes nationally-known and still recognizes his roots.Take Pedro Gomez of ESPN for example. He’s been on the Barry Bonds beat for a couple of years now; an experience he can’t wait to get off as soon as Bonds hits another home run to break Hank Aaron’s all-time record.Gomez still remembers where he once was, though. Over the weekend, he reminisced about covering prep sports for the San Diego Union-Tribune in 1989-90.Rather than talk about the Bonds beat, he recalled covering the South Bay portion of San Diego.“Is George Ohnesorgen still the football coach at Chula Vista High School?” he asked.Actually, Ohnesorgen is now the principal at the South Bay high school. But it’s nice for Gomez to remember his South Bay days; even while being among the media circus of 300 people following the ultra-moody Bonds.
